BACKGROUND: Equity, inclusion, and diversity in medical education are increasingly recognized as crucial for enhancing student engagement and improving health outcomes. This paper aims to analyze trends and assess student attitudes toward ethnic equity, inclusion, and diversity within campus-based modules at the University of Buckingham Medical School, UK. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 97 medical students aged 18–24 years (86.6%) between 2021 and 2023. Quantitative data were gathered through a pretested questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale and analyzed using SPSS software (version 26). Qualitative insights were obtained from five focus group sessions with randomly selected medical students and analyzed thematically. RESULTS: The findings of this study indicated a significant proportion of Asian descent students (56.7%). First-year and White ethnicity students perceived the curriculum as more representative compared to second-year counterparts and peers from other ethnic backgrounds. Notably, first-year students showed a heightened understanding of social science terms, especially “ethnicity,” and 67% of female students demonstrated a deeper comprehension of sociocultural factors influencing health behaviors. Across demographics, there was consistent recognition of these factors impacting patient care. Qualitative findings underscored the importance of representation in medical education, biases in recruitment, and advocated for greater faculty diversity. Additionally, there is a need for a curriculum reflecting diverse dietary habits and including role models from various ethnic backgrounds. CONCLUSION: This study emphasizes the critical need for curricular reform in medical education to prepare students for a multicultural society. Addressing disparities in curriculum representation and promoting diversity within faculties are essential for equipping future healthcare professionals with the skills to provide culturally competent care and navigate diverse patient populations effectively.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate lifestyle practices among individuals with diabetes may influence the progression of diabetes and its complications. The aim of this study was to assess the lifestyle practices among individuals with diabetes in Sudan. METHODOLOGY: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional, health facility-based study conducted in 3 diabetes centers treating individuals with diabetes. The data were collected using a standardized pretested metabolic questionnaire about lifestyle and were analyzed by performing descriptive and inferential statistics through SPSS program version 23. RESULTS: A total of 528 patients with diabetes answered the questionnaire. There were 52.1% of female participants and 72.9% of urban residents. 23.9% were obese, regular exercise was reported by 27.7%, and no exercise by 17%. There was a statistically significant association between lifestyle practices and gender (P < 0.001), age (P < 0.001), educational level (P = 0.002), marital status (P < 0.001), duration of diabetes (P < 0.001), hypertension (P < 0.001), high-density lipoprotein (P < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein (P < 0.001), and HbA1c level (P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed male gender and education were significantly associated with lifestyle changes. Men were more likely to engage in favorable lifestyle practices than women (P < 0.001), while those with no formal education were less likely to engage in healthy lifestyle (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Health authorities in Sudan will need to put more efforts into education for promoting self-awareness and good lifestyle practices in the population with diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Professionalism is an essential theme in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. The current study aimed to assess the preclerkship medical students' perception on medical professionalism. METHODS: A cross-sectional qualitative study using the critical incident technique was conducted at the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). An online survey was sent to 300 medical students (years 1–3). Participants were asked to describe an official doctor–patient encounter that they have experienced in a health-care setting and to highlight the professional behaviors in that encounter. They were then requested to list the top five characteristics of a professional doctor. Thirty (10%) medical students responded to the study; only 13 reported real incidents. The responses were independently reviewed by the authors. The descriptions of the professional attitudes were grouped according to the six domains of professionalism defined by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Physicians Charter and then plotted against the nine domains of medical professionalism published in the UAE Consensus Statement. RESULTS: The most common professional behaviors reported were patience, honesty, respect, and patient care. The participants addressed all six domains of professionalism described by the ABIM physicians charter (altruism, accountability, duty , excellence, honor and integrity, and respect for others) and all the domains of medical professionalism published in the UAE Consensus Statement, except for “commitment to advocacy” and “commitment to education” domains. CONCLUSION: Preclerkship medical students had an insight about the professional behaviors needed from doctors before formal teaching about professionalism in the curriculum.

INTRODUCTION: Social factors such as culture, race, education, belief, and living and working environment can be part of the causes of diseases or influence the natural history of a disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have adopted the Harden's ten questions of curriculum development framework approach to assess the social impact of medical curriculum of Faculty of Medicine, Gezira University (FMUG), among the Integrated Program of Field Training, Research, and Rural Development course. We have assessed the objectives and aims of the course and critically analyzed how these will meet the need for social sciences to be integrated into the curriculum. RESULTS: The recommendations about social and behavioral sciences are well implemented in the curriculum of FMUG. The curriculum promotes early exposure to the community learning. The ten questions of Harden for curriculum or course assessment are satisfactorily covered in the Integrated Program of Field Training, Research, and Rural Development course at FMUG. In addition, the course is also fitting well with criteria suggested recently for increasing competency in social medicine within the medical school curriculum. Importantly, the course is part of the social sciences that well integrated through the duration of the curriculum. CONCLUSION: The Integrated Program of Field Training, Research, and Rural Development course at FMUG satisfy most of the competency for social medicine. Therefore, taking all these factors into consideration, it is possible to suggest that further research is needed to establish whether the model of FMUG in social sciences can be exemplary for universities in Africa and the Middle East.

INTRODUCTION: In different countries around the world, the involvement of women in academic medicine was less in comparison with men. This study aimed to assess whether there were significant gender differences in research perception, practice, and publication in Sudan. METHODS: This was an analytical cross-sectional study was carried out using questionnaire among 153 teaching staff of five Sudanese medical faculties from both genders, including teaching assistants, lecturers, assistant professors, associate professors, and full professors. RESULTS: There were no significant differences among participants' gender regarding their universities, qualifications, research training received after graduation, and participation in research currently or in the past or current position, but female participants seem to be younger as their mean of age was 38.8 (±9.2) compared with 42.6 (±10.1) for males. Importantly, the males' researcher has not only published significantly more than females but also appeared to have significantly more years of research experience. The mean score of research perception was higher among male participants who indicated that they had a more favorable perception of research. CONCLUSION: The study showed that in Sudanese medical colleges significantly higher percentage of men published scientific papers more than women. In addition, the male also had a significantly higher mean score of research perception which indicated that they had a more favorable perception of research.
