The article presents a speech delivered by Calvin Coolidge, Vice-President of the University of Pennsylvania, on July 7, 1921. He discusses the role of education in guaranteeing the future of United States through the continuation of knowledge of progress in the past. He presents his view of education as a means of establishing ideals. He cites the classical literature of Greece and Rome as sources of inspiration to the ideals of patriotism, cultural attainment, and the sacrifices these would entail.
