Background/purpose: The etiology of the ectopic eruption (EE) of the maxillary first permanent molars (FPM) remains unclear and controversial. This study was designed to explore the dental and skeletal factors for EE of the FPM in children. Materials and methods: Children aged 6–10 years were recruited to this study. Subjects were assigned to the ectopic eruption group (EEG) and the normal eruption group (NEG). Lateral cephalometric radiographs and panoramic radiographs were measured by angular and linear indices. Results: The prevalence of EE of maxillary FPM was higher in males and at younger ages. Subjects with skeletal class III malocclusion were more likely to be diagnosed with EE of maxillary FPM. The SNA, ANB, FMIA, Wits, Ptm-A, ANS-PNS, overbite, and overjet were significantly different between the EEG and the NEG. The length of the posterior region of the maxillary alveolar bone, U6-OP, and eruptive angulation of the maxillary FPM were statistically different between the two groups. Conclusion: Male sex, skeletal class III malocclusion, mesial inclination of the maxillary FPM, hypoplasia of the maxilla, and insufficient length of the posterior region of the maxillary alveolar bone were related to EE of the maxillary FPM.

Background/purpose: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a chronic disease with progressive destruction of articular cartilage. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic effects of kartogenin on TMJOA via promoting the binding of core binding factor β (CBFβ) and runt-related transcription factor 1 (RUNX1). Materials and methods: Type II collagenase was injected into 35 8-week-old male Sprague Dawley rat TMJs to establish the TMJOA model. Kartogenin, or the CBFβ-RUNX1 complex inhibitor (Ro5-3335), was also delivered via intra-articular injection. Subchondral bone was analyzed by MicroCT. The hematoxylin-eosin, Safranin O, and toluidine blue O staining were used to observe histopathology. Immunohistochemical staining of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), caspase-3 (CASP3), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and collagen II (COL2) was performed. Background/purpose: Analysis of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS)-related long noncoding RNAs (LncRNAs) may enable prognostic stratification in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the ERS-related LncRNAs signature and its effects on the prognosis, tumorigenesis, and tumor immune microenvironment in HNSCC. Materials and methods: The transcriptome data of HNSCC were obtained from TCGA. Least absolute shrinkage selection operator algorithm, and multivariate Cox regression were used to screen LncRNAs for the signature construction. Somatic mutation, gene enrichment, and immune infiltration analyses were further performed. Results: 458 ERS-related LncRNAs were identified and 55 of which were correlated with HNSCC prognosis. Ten ERS-related LncRNAs were selected to establish a risk prediction signature. Background/purpose: Patients receiving antithrombotic drugs are more likely to suffer bleeding after tooth extraction and multiple factors are related to it. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of bleeding and risk factors for bleeding after dental extractions in patients receiving antithrombotic drugs. Materials and methods: This retrospective case control study included patients receiving oral antithrombotic drugs or not. Tooth extractions were conducted under ECG monitoring and local hemostatic measures were performed. Risk factors for postoperative hemorrhage after tooth extraction were evaluated using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Bleeding events were reported in 27 (27%) patients receiving antithrombotic drugs and 9 (9%) patients who didn't use antithrombotic drugs, the difference between which was significant (p 75 years), oral hygiene, inferior nerve block and number of extracted tooth may be related to bleeding after tooth extraction.

Local anesthesia (LA) is the most important pain management process in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Safe and effective LA not only enable patients to obtain high-quality treatment, but also relieve the anxiety of patients when they come to the clinic. The choices of local anesthetic and injection methods determine the success of LA to a great extent. At present, in most countries or regions, common local anesthetics used in oral and maxillofacial surgery belong to amides and they are injected into patients' body mainly through block or infiltration anesthesia. In addition, the operators' technique level, patient's subjective psychology and anatomical variation of maxillofacial structure also have a strong influence on LA in dental clinic. Due to the existence of above factors, the worldwide success rates of LA in oral and maxillofacial surgery is very different. There are no specific LA methods that ensure 100% successful LA rates. Fortunately, the development of new local anesthetic and injection technology are providing us with new ideas to solve this problem. This review mainly report the new research progress on LA in oral and maxillofacial surgery in recent decades and help clinicians with dental LA operation.

Background/purpose: The surgical removal of mandibular third molars is frequently accompanied by significant postsurgical sequelae. Different instruments such as piezosurgery and conventional rotary handpiece have been used to decrease such adverse events. There are controversial results from randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of Piezosurgery in the mandibular third molar extraction, compared with conventional rotary instrument. This study was performed to determine the impact of piezosurgery versus conventional rotary instrument on postoperative reactions after extraction. Materials and methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to combine relevant RCTs results. Results: Five RCTs were eligible for this study, enrolling a total of 402 patients. Compared with conventional rotary instrument, pain score at 6 or 7 days and mouth opening at 1 day after surgery was significantly lower in Piezosurgery group (SMD -0.33, 95% CI: −0.56 to −0.10, P = 0.005), as well as swelling score at 7 days after surgery (SMD -1.95, 95% CI: −3.22 to −0.67, P = 0.003). Furthermore, mouth opening at 1 day after surgery was significantly better in patients treated with Piezosurgery (SMD 0.84, 95% CI: 0.19 to 1.49, P = 0.01). Background/purpose: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is an unusual but quite serious complication. However, its mechanism remains unclear, and its treatment protocol is still controversial. Materials and methods: Our study involved 201 osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) patients from September 2006 to March 2017. We analyzed risk factors, clinical characteristics, treatment, etc., by comparing MRONJ with other ONJs. Results: Among 201 patients, MRONJ accounted for 14.71% and it presented a consistent increase tendency. In comparison with other ONJs, we considered advanced age, maxilla lesion, diabetes mellitus, tooth extraction, especially multi-teeth extraction as risk factors (P 0.05). 81.3% patients with advanced stage showed complete or partial healing lesions after surgery. Conclusion: Advanced age, maxilla lesion, diabetes mellitus, tooth extraction seem to be important triggering factors for MRONJ. Clinicians and surgeons should pay attention to maxillary lesions as it is related to severe symptoms and unfavorable prognosis.
