Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether peer‐assisted learning (PAL) is a more effective learning and test method in terms of oral‐ and maxillofacial surgery. Material and methods: In July 2020, a total of 267 students took a PAL‐based exam on fictional patients with surgical issues, in which they had to evaluate two fellow students and were themselves evaluated by two fellow students. The students evaluated their experience with the PAL‐based exam through a questionnaire which consisted of five given statements (answer possibilities: agree, disagree, neutral) and two questions (answer possibilities: better, equal, worse) to rate. Results: In the survey, 77.9% of the students rated PAL as a better learning method and 21% rated it as at least equally effective to the known multiple‐choice (MC) test. A total of 74.9% of the students indicated that they learned more content with PAL and 20.2% said they learned the same amount; 83.7% said that their "clinical thinking has improved" through PAL. In the comments, 73% of the students noted that they think PAL is a good learning method, and at least 22% rated it as useful but in need of improvements. Only 5% did not see PAL as an acceptable learning method. In contrast to this, 1.3% saw PAL as a "bad alternative to MC tests." Conclusion: PAL, especially peer assessment, might represent a better learning method as it might encourage students to deal more intensively with the learning content and to improve clinical thinking. Little research exists on reciprocal learning, a type of peer-assisted learning in which students act concurrently as both teacher and learner in small groups. The aims of this pilot study were to assess the feasibility of using case-based reciprocal learning with dental students and to assess its impact on students' satisfaction and perceived clinical reasoning, educational value, and use of evidence-based dentistry. In this quasi-experimental mixed methods study conducted in 2018, small-group sessions led by a third-year dental student were designed to expose second-year students to clinical portfolios prior to clinical rotations, promote evidence-based dentistry, and improve students' clinical critical thinking skills by having them work in small groups to teach and learn from each other. After the intervention, all 76 students in the sessions were invited to complete a survey with 11 Likert-scale items and six open-response questions assessing their engagement in learning, perceived educational value, and perceived quality of facilitation associated with reciprocal learning. Sixty-five students completed the surveys for a response rate of 86%. Among the survey respondents, 87.7% agreed/strongly agreed that the small groups facilitated enhanced learning, and 66.2% agreed/strongly agreed that they learned the material better because they had to teach it to their peers. Also, 74.6% agreed/strongly agreed that their clinical critical thinking improved, and 92.3% agreed/strongly agreed that they felt better prepared to complete a patient portfolio once they reach clinic. This study found that reciprocal learning had favorable outcomes in terms of students' perceptions of learning. The students reported that the small groups enhanced their learning, improved their comfort in asking questions in small groups, and exposed them to a variety of clinical situations. This study sought to extend that research by assessing the effect of PAL on dentists in practice. The aim of this study was to ask practicing dentists who were clinically trained with PAL in dental school for their perceptions of the effects and value of that training for their patient care, team relations, and professional development. In addition, participants were asked for recommendations to improve pairing and the matching process. An electronic survey was sent in October 2017 to all 667 dentists who graduated from Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Arizona from 2012 to 2017, all of whom had been trained in a PAL-general practice model. A total 107 alumni responded, for a 16% overall response rate; the response rate averaged 16.7% for each class. The majority (83.6%) of responding dentists recommended peer learning in clinical dental education. Survey participants attributed their clinical judgment (72.3%) and teamwork (80.9%) skills to peer pairing in dental school. Among the respondents, 89.8% had taken leadership roles and were training team members, and 75.7% reported enjoying teaching others. Of the 65% who commented on peer pairing enhancements, 15% recommended rotation of peers for greater learning experiences, and 24% advised personality assessments for future pair matching. Increasing importance is attached to teaching generic skills to undergraduate students in various disciplines. This article describes an extracurricular, student-led activity for teaching generic skills using the Model United Nations over three months. The activity used the Health Care Simulation Model (HCSM) with peer learning and role-playing to accomplish its objectives. An interview was used to select from undergraduate and postgraduate dental students at Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt, to develop a group of staff to act as peer teachers after receiving training (n=77). These peer teachers provided training for 123 undergraduate dental students to serve as delegates who acted as trainees or peer learners. At the end of the training sessions, a conference was held in which the students played the roles of delegates representing officials responsible for health care systems in ten countries. The students reported improvement in generic skills, enjoyed several aspects of the experience, and disliked other aspects of the model to a lesser extent. In multivariate analysis, perceived usefulness of the HCSM was significantly greater for staff than delegates and increased as self-reported improvement in knowledge of health care systems increased. This study suggests that innovative, student-centered educational methods can be effective for teaching generic skills and factual information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
