Background: Aesthetics medicine, a controversial branch of clinical medicine known for its high degree of commercialization, faces numerous conflicts, particularly in some developing countries. The global aesthetics medicine industry requires enhancements of its legal and supervision framework and risk management systems. Aims: This paper aimed to provide a comprehensive visual analysis of academic achievements related to regulatory and legal issues in the field of aesthetic medicine and to identify its development trends and research hotspots. Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection was employed to retrieve relevant studies, resulting in a total of 602 research articles after selection. Utilizing bibliometric methods and CiteSpace, this study analyzed the primary countries, institutions, authors, journals, hotspots, frontiers, and trends in this domain. Results: The findings indicated rapid increases in the number of published papers. The United States emerged as the leading contributor with 131 research papers and the highest intermediate centrality. Eleven keyword clusters were identified, with "adolescence" and "office‐based surgery" being the most recent topics. We also analyzed the trends and frontiers of legal research in medical aesthetics. Conclusion: The importance of informed consent has been increasingly emphasized, and research in the field of medical aesthetics has been gradually expanding beyond individual cosmetic procedures. The management system has become more comprehensive, moreover, guidelines and medical laws have been continually published, with research shifting toward a holistic perspective that encompasses patients, medical aesthetic providers, and regulatory authorities in the study of medical aesthetics regulation and legislation. Background: Melasma is an acquired melanogenesis dysfunction resulting in chronic hyperpigmentation commonly affecting the face and other frequently sun‐exposed areas of the body. Melasma typically presents in women of reproductive age and can significantly impact self‐esteem, negatively affecting one's quality of life. In the United States, melasma is often treated with application of topical agents that interfere with melanin synthesis, lasers, or chemical peels; however, in some East Asian countries, oral tranexamic acid (TXA) is widely administered to alleviate hyperpigmentation during and after childbirth. TXA is currently only FDA‐approved to treat hypermenorrhea and reduce blood loss in surgery but may offer women in the United States an additional therapeutic option to treat melasma. Aims: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the safety and baseline efficacy of oral transmexic acid as a treatment for melasma. Methods: We retrospectively surveyed 42 patients of Fitzpatrick skin types III‐VI that were prescribed 650 mg of TXA ½ tablet to be taken twice daily by mouth. Results: We found majority of patients saw noticeable improvement in their melasma. Of the 42 patients, only seven experienced side effects. The side effects noted were headaches, malaise and nausea, gastrointestinal upset, congestion, numbness in legs, hypomenorrhea, and hypermenorrhea. Patients who experienced unpleasant side effects discontinued taking oral TXA and were relieved of their symptoms. No long‐term side effects were discovered, and the side effects experienced may be due to other confounding factors. Conclusion: From this data, we concluded oral TXA is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with persistent melasma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Public interest in hair loss topics and treatments can be observed by examining online trends, such as those monitored by Google Trends. Social media has also gained the interest of the dermatology community. Video‐based social media sites are being used to provide the public with informational content related to hair loss and treatments, but it may not always be unbiased or reliable. Aims: This research examined the interest in hair loss and treatment related trends in recent years through Google Trends, as well as examined what videos from YouTube and TikTok that the average person may encounter when performing searches related to hair loss and treatments. Results: Google Trends showed that the COVID‐19 pandemic had an initial negative impact on interests of hair loss and treatment related topics, both worldwide and in the United States. External events, such as a celebrity receiving a hair transplant, can influence the interests of the general public with the topic. The social media sites showed that there was a high level of interest in the topics, approximately 25% of videos involved a medical professional, and many involved personal experiences or natural remedies. Conclusions: Interest in hair loss and treatments continues to grow. Clinicians should do their best to follow the current public interests and be aware of where patients may be obtaining information. Being aware of general interest trends online can benefit clinicians by allowing them to prepare their clinics for potential influxes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The FACE‐Q, a validated, modular patient‐reported outcome measure with global uptake, currently does not have a scale to measure the appearance of the temples. Objectives of our study were to develop a new FACE‐Q scale for appearance of temples and assess content validity of two existing FACE‐Q scales in the context of temple hollowing: Satisfaction with Facial Appearance and Psychological Function. Methods: A heterogeneous sample of adults who were seeking or had received treatments for temple hollowing was recruited from three outpatient clinics in the United States. Semi‐structured interviews using an interpretive description approach were completed to elicit concepts and generate an item pool and assess content validity of the two existing FACE‐Q scales. The item pool data were used to develop preliminary Temple scale, which was refined based on patient and expert feedback. Results: Participants (N = 15, 55 ± 9 years) described a range of esthetic concerns related to temple hollowing and its treatment. The data were used to draft the FACE‐Q Satisfaction with Temples scale, which was refined through input from patients (N = 12) and clinicians (N = 5), resulting in a 16‐item FACE‐Q Satisfaction with Temples scale. The scale covers concepts of fullness, harmony, scenarios (eg, mirror, bright lights), age, and shape. Content validity of the two existing FACE‐Q scales was substantiated. Conclusion: The FACE‐Q Satisfaction with Temples scale fills an important gap in patient‐reported outcome measurement in facial esthetics. The scale will be field‐tested to finalize content and develop the scoring algorithm prior to implementation in clinical practice and research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Skin cancers are the most common malignancies in the United States. Total body skin examination by a physician, especially a dermatologist, is the gold standard for detecting suspicious lesions that may require further evaluation. Non‐medical professionals (NMPs) including massage therapists, estheticians, hairdressers, and cosmetologists have the unique opportunity to frequently examine their client's skin outside of a clinical setting. By evaluating their knowledge of and comfort with evaluation of suspicious lesions, multiple studies have gauged the utility of patient encounters with NMPs for skin cancer detection. Several studies have also focused on assessment of intervention strategies for assessing and improving NMPs ability to detect suspicious lesions and to refer for physician evaluation when necessary. Aims: To conduct a narrative review of skin cancer knowledge, attitudes, and practices among NMPs. Patients/Methods: A systematic search of the databases yielded 16 studies for review. A total of 8 cross‐sectional studies examined the knowledge and attitudes of NMPs toward skin evaluation, and 8 studies assessed interventional strategies for improving NMPs' ability to assess skin lesions for consideration of physician referral. Results: This review finds that NMPs are open to the idea of examining the exposed body surfaces relevant to their work with clients and are willing to refer for physician evaluation when needed. Multiple interventional strategies have demonstrated success with educating NMPs on the importance of skin surveillance and the characteristic physical examination findings associated with skin cancers. Conclusion: Strengthening the readiness of NMPs to examine their client's skin offers an opportunity to reduce time to skin cancer diagnosis, improve patient outcomes, and lower healthcare‐associated costs of skin cancer treatment. Summary: Background: In 2011, a cohesive polydensified matrix (CPM®) hyaluronic acid (HA) gel filler was approved by the USA Food and Drug Administration. In 2014, lidocaine was added to the gel during its manufacturing process. Objectives: To compare the behavior and rheological properties of a CPM® HA gel with and without lidocaine. Methods: In our office, we performed simple tests to document the cohesiveness and resistance to traction force of both gels. In two different laboratories, the rheological properties of both gels were measured. We used comparative data of the gel without lidocaine collected from over 6 years. We also observed the gels' behavior when injected into the superficial and mid‐reticular dermis, comparing their distribution using both ultrasonography and histology. Results: Over more than 10 years, we observed no difference between both gels, even if clinically we felt a difference in the gels' viscosity upon injection. Their behaviors during injection were similar. Using more sophisticated tests measuring the gels' rheological properties with different techniques, namely sheer sweeps, a difference was, however, noted between the two gels. Conclusions: Adding lidocaine to CPM® HA gel renders it more viscous. Whether this means a difference in the clinical results, however, would require a comparative clinical study over an extended time period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is a recent European regulation on chemical substances meant to protect human health and the environment. REACH imposes the “precautionary principle” where additional data and definitive action are required when uncertainty is identified. The cosmetics industry is only partially concerned by REACH: while the stages of registration and evaluation apply to cosmetics, those of authorization and restriction most likely will not, as cosmetic ingredients are already subject to regulation by various agencies and directives. REACH has potential benefits to the industry including the possibility of reassuring consumers and improving their image of chemicals and cosmetics. However, REACH also has potential disadvantages, mainly with regard to impeding innovation. The American cosmetics industry will be affected by REACH, because all US manufacturers who export substances to Europe will have to fully comply with REACH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
