Digital technology is evolving, and construction companies now have various choices of these technologies to implement into daily business. This has, however, resulted in a growing argument on how digital technologies can be accepted in various contexts. However, most arguments are based on technology acceptance models with the core concept of individual behaviors, which ignores the influence of other stakeholders and organizational characteristics. This paper aims to present a novel model representing the successful practice of the assimilation process for digital construction technologies that should be considered before any technology acceptance analysis. The model was tested via empirical investigation with 372 practitioners from Australia involved in building and infrastructure construction projects. Structural equation modeling, measurement invariance of composite models, and some semistructured interviews were used to test and verify the relationships between key variables of the model. The results suggest that the capability of assimilation can be enhanced by improving innovativeness and the relevant operational processes, with a t -value of >6.27. The findings show that a project's likelihood of successful technology assimilation can also be increased if vendors are supportive and the company improves its operating performance assessment and absorption capacity. The findings clarify theoretical and practical contributions for a better understanding of critical factors of assimilation and provide a tool to potential company users for predicting the success of technology assimilation. Despite the huge amount of research and diversity of project management topics, there is no well-established research on success of projects. Thus it is necessary to create models of project success and rate project performance for specific fields. Dam engineering projects have significant economic, social, and environmental impact. However, their performance over the life cycle, including strategic planning, design, construction, and operation, has not been systematically studied. Improving the performance of dam engineering projects is an area unknown to researchers and project managers. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to fill in this knowledge gap with an extensive literature review, looking at primary studies for extraction of project success criteria. Systematic review of the literature reveals that 13 items are candidates for success criteria of dam engineering projects in Australia. In this systematic literature review process, data extraction and analysis and reporting, have been tailored to answer the research question. Analysis of the selected articles using two dimensions of publication and content characteristics offers a more comprehensive perspective of the publication set in this area of research. A growing trend in the publications indicates a still emerging and growing research area, as more researchers and project practitioners are interested in the area of project success. Analysis of the content characteristics shows that despite the still-dominant Iron Triangle (time, budget, and quality) cited most often as project success criteria, new criteria are emerging, because the researchers see project success as achieving long-term objectives of the projects as well. Despite efforts to promote gender diversity, the construction industry in Australia remains one of the most male-dominated industries. Women, compared to their male counterparts, progress more slowly and encounter major obstacles to career development in the construction industry. Existing research tends to focus on broad factors that impact women's career development in all career stages despite the fact that women's career priorities often change as they progress through different career stages. This study applied Super's career development model to investigate the influential factors on women's career development across four career stages: explore (precareer), establishment (early career), midcareer, and late career. By conducting a systematic review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, this research identified influential factors related to women's career development in the construction industry, namely, attitude, capability, interest, past experiences, family responsibilities, parental influences, role models, support, culture, organizational practice, and policies and regulations. Based on the women's empowerment framework, the identified factors were coded and synthesized into three dimensions: individual, relational, and environmental. The research finds there is a significant focus on providing relational and environmental support to women in construction, and less attention is given to individual factors. The review revealed that personal interest and parental perceptions in construction influence women's career development in precareer and early career stages, while masculine culture significantly impacts women's career development in all career stages. This study also summarizes the theoretical contributions and practical implications drawn from existing research on different stages of women's career development and provides guidance for further research. The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry globally has a long history of prudently adopting novel technologies to improve products and services. Yet the rapid development of digital technology currently taking place is threatening to produce a more disruptive inflection, or substantial jolt. This paper explores the state of readiness of the AEC industry for such anticipated transformation. We illustrate our conceptual arguments with evidence from an explorative study across a sample of AEC organizations in Australia. At the core of this paper, we offer six provocations that highlight what we consider major challenges for the AEC industry—across multiple levels of analysis—related to the increasing role of digital technology. We then turn to lessons learned from other industries in order to propose a framework consisting of four leadership thinking schemas to enable digital transformation readiness: future thinking, strategic thinking, capability thinking, and experimental thinking. The theoretical connections between off-site construction (OSC) and lean have only been marginally addressed in existing literature. This study analyses how distinct OSC strategies (1) affect flow and completion times, and (2) support simplification in construction (by reducing the number of parts and/or steps). Flow, which entails the smooth and reliable transfer of work across trades, is at the heart of lean whereas simplification is one principle of this management philosophy. Industry data based on three residential projects built in Australia using traditional construction or OSC strategies (panels/cassettes, and/or bathroom pods), and 15 hypothetical scenarios were used to develop a simulation exercise. The results show that OSC can substantially reduce schedule durations, particularly when different prefab elements are jointly used, but flow variability [measured by coefficient of variation (COV)] remains unchanged when compared to traditional construction. OSC was found to minimize the number of parts on-site by having building materials and components aggregated off-site and delivered as subassemblies. Yet, the number of steps did not reduce substantially, and the reductions only occurred when panels/cassettes were used. Alternative perspectives explaining the numerical results obtained are also discussed. The main contribution of this paper lies in measuring the impact of distinct OSC strategies from a flow viewpoint as well as in empirically examining their benefits from a simplification viewpoint. The study extends existing knowledge by leveraging industry data to quantify such impacts utilizing a tailored simulation approach. The objective of this research was to present a platform to identify the optimal staffing of a multiskilled workforce in the construction industry. The novelty of our model is its capability in developing a customized and context specific multiskilled workforce staffing strategy that identifies the best compromise between multiskilling costs and benefits with consideration of unique features of different production environments. Another novelty of our multiskilled workforce staffing is its capacity to explore every possible schedule associate with every possible staffing strategy. Our model chooses the multiskilling staffing strategy corresponding to the schedule that leads to the best results in terms of cost and time. The paper examined optimal multiskilling staffing and scheduling and compared it with well-regarded existing multiskilling strategies in the construction industry, such as chaining and direct capacity balancing, using an optimization technique. The parameters of the optimization model were informed by a small hypothetical case and a real case off-site construction factory producing bathroom pods in Australia. Developed an optimal multiskilling staffing strategy continuously and in some cases significantly outweighed the existing well-regarded multiskilling strategies. The optimal multiskilling staffing strategy is highly context-specific and can be very complex because achieving it needs having an appropriate staffing platform. Subjective decision making on a multi skilling staffing strategy that does not deploy the workforce to the most appropriate workstations can lead to a significant productivity loss. Poor safety is a perennial problem for the construction industry worldwide. The concept of safety climate has been strongly linked to safety performance, yet inconsistent methodologies make international comparisons problematic. In addressing this gap in research, a comparative safety climate survey of 515 construction operatives and managers in Australia, Indonesia, and China is presented using a standardized tool. The results highlight interesting similarities and differences between safety climate in each country and question taken–for–granted assumptions that safety climate in countries with relatively mature regulatory structures like Australia are more positive than in less developed countries like Indonesia and China. Results also highlight the intermediating effects of factors such as management commitment and cultural differences in shaping safety climate. Highlighting the potential value of theories of new institutionalism and cultural and ethical relativism, the paper concludes by raising important new practical, theoretical, and methodological questions about the merits and challenges of making international comparisons of safety climate, even when using standardized measurement tools. The AU$8.3 billion Sydney Metro Northwest Rail Link is Australia's largest public transport project and includes the construction of twin 15-km tunnels. A temporary precast facility was constructed to produce the wall-linings for the tunnels. The facility is operated 24 h a day from Monday to Friday and 12 h on Saturday with 100 workers. To enhance the safety performance within the facility, an experiential learning safety program referred to as See the Difference was implemented in conjunction with other safety interventions, although the program was the glue that held all initiatives together. This paper describes the safety program and examines its effectiveness and contribution it made toward reducing incidents and engendering teamwork within the temporary precast facility. It was observed that the See the Difference program had a positive influence on changing the mindset of the workforce from a fixed one to one of growth, which was developed through a process of coaching. The paper draws on actual practice and presents a novel approach to improving safety through the introduction of an experiential safety program. The case study offers a learning opportunity for other organizations that are confronted with implementing safety awareness programs, particularly for infrastructure transportation megaprojects. This paper reports on a self-reported survey of performance in international construction joint ventures formed and operated by Australian and British contracting organizations. Based on previous studies, a questionnaire survey was developed to investigate the relationships between reported risk and success factors, and the performance of ventures. Through structural equation modeling, the paper empirically examines the effect of key processes such as partner selection, venture formation, and operation on venture performance. The results provide evidence that local partner attributes influence venture formation which, in turn, is strongly and positively related to its operation. These results also suggest that the negative impact of host government-related risks on venture formation is direct, while their impact on venture performance is indirect, through creating a “less certain” operating environment. Project-related risks appear to have strong and negative dual “direct and indirect” effects on venture performance. Based on these empirical results, the paper advocates that selecting a suitable complementary local partner and adopting a proactive risk management strategy are vital antecedents to successful venture performance. The circular economy plays a key role in the wider transition to a low-carbon built environment. Materials are critical in this transition, yet there is limited information about their current use in the built environment in many regions. This explorative study investigated circular economy in the Australian construction materials industry using a three-stage mixed-method approach. The first stage was to map actors and their practices and challenges related to material supply, use, and end of life. This involved 20 interviews with stakeholders and a workshop. The second stage was to assess key materials stocks and flows to identify the volume of the challenge through existing databases and consultation with industry stakeholders. The third stage was to understand the current state of material circularity at industry-leading examples. This was investigated through 13 interviews across two case studies, alongside site visits. These complementary research methods and stages provided findings into material circularity potential within the residential construction sector from both a macroperspective and a microperspective. The results included that new materials being used in construction are more than double the flow of waste out, showing that stocks of materials in use are growing rapidly but that data gaps are extensive. There was a focus on material reduction for cost-savings and sustainability, but there was significant opportunity for other circular economy principles, such as rethinking construction techniques. Further, in the context of a highly volatile industry, circularity requires a focus on material-specific institutional arrangements. The contribution to knowledge on construction materials and their supply chain provides fundamental insights that are required for the transition toward a circular economy, where the residential construction sector (not just in Australia but globally) would more readily reduce, reuse, recycle and recover resources, as well as being less reliant on virgin material use. The collapse of capital markets is having an impact of the funding arrangements for economic and social infrastructure projects in Australia. Bearing this in mind, this paper seeks to examine whether the current volatility and uncertainty in capital markets in Australia affects the feasibility of privately financed infrastructure and specifically the public-private partnership (PPP) method of procurement. This paper examines the role and dependency that capital markets play in funding PPPs, current market conditions, and how they will affect PPP viability. Implementing risk management in construction projects and organizations may bring a number of benefits and therefore it is necessary to have risk management as an integral part of a construction organization’s management practice. The aim of this paper is to develop a risk management maturity assessment model for construction organizations. The paper describes the development process of a Web-based RM3 (risk management maturity model), including its contents, its validation and testing, as well as its applications. The RM3 developed has five attributes namely, management, risk culture, ability to identify risk, ability to analyze risk, and application of standardized risk management process/system. These attributes are measured against four levels: initial, repeated, managed, and optimized. It is found that the proposed RM3 was suitable and useful. Using the RM3, it is found that the Australian construction industry’s overall risk management maturity level was relatively low (where 32% rated at Level 2 and 52% rated at Level 3). Furthermore, it is found that the weakest attribute was “analyzing risks” followed by “application of standardized risk management process.” It is therefore necessary to provide more training on qualitative and quantitative risk analysis to construction personnel and to develop and apply standardized enterprise risk management. Safety is a major concern in the construction industry because fatalities and injuries from construction work bring great losses to individuals, organizations, and societies as a whole. This paper aims to understand how construction personnel perceive safety risks in China as compared with those in Australia. Postal questionnaire surveys were used to collect data on safety risk perceptions from the two nations. The safety risk factors were assessed using a risk significance index based on the likelihood of occurrences and the impacts on safety performance. The survey results revealed that in China the main perception of safety risks came from human-and/or procedure-related issues, with “low/no safety education” paramount, followed by “inadequate fire prevention and electrical prevention procedures,” etc. In contrast, the major safety risks perceived in Australia were related to the environment and physical site conditions with “contamination of land, water and air” ranked first, followed by “unforeseen excavation of soil,” etc. To minimize construction safety risks in China, this paper suggests that the government should develop collective legislation and safety protection procedures, and enforce safety education and training to all site participants. Risks related to environmental and site conditions were generally realized by the Australia construction industry, which were not highly acknowledged in China. Work-life conflict has a damaging effect on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, productivity turnover, and absenteeism. On an individual level, work-life conflict is associated with employee burnout, mental health issues, substance abuse, and diminished family functioning. Thus, work-life balance is an important issue to the construction industry, in terms of both organizational effectiveness and occupational health. Long and inflexible work hours are the most consistent predictor of work-life conflict among construction employees, particularly those working on-site or in a project office. There is considerable resistance to the adoption of new ways of scheduling work within the industry. This paper describes the post hoc evaluation of a compressed work week (reducing the length of the working week, but increasing the length of the working day) in a case study project alliance in Queensland, Australia. Quantitative and qualitative data are presented to demonstrate the beneficial impact of the initiative on employees’ work-life balance. The evaluation provides prima facie evidence that alternative work schedules can improve construction employees’ work-life balance, creating benefits for construction employees and organizations. The paper concludes that project alliances provide an ideal environment in which work-life balance initiatives can help to create high-performance work systems in the construction sector. Recent research undertaken revealed that a significant positive relationship exists between quality and safety performance. A major limitation of this research, however, was the nature of the sample; it was heterogeneous (i.e., a combination of U.S. and international projects) and the sample was restricted to 18 projects. Building upon initial research, this paper re-examines the association between quality and safety using a homogeneous sample of 569 projects, which were derived from an Australian construction company with an annual turnover in excess of $1 billion Australian dollars (AU$). A total of 19,314 nonconformances and 17,783 injuries were used to determine the validity and reliability of previous research. A weak association between quality and safety performance was found (p < 0.01). The p-values did not indicate any significant association between first aid and quality rates, except for the injury rate and rework frequency per million scope, which yielded an r-value of 0.307 and p-value 0.046 that is significant at 0.01 level. An association, however, between injuries and rework was identified (r² = 0.70). The discrepancy between this research's findings and that of previous work led to an examination of the issues of using ratios in correlation analysis. Thus, the statistical and arithmetic issues associated with the use of ratios are discussed, and it is recommended that estimating the relationships between quality and safety should be examined using regression techniques or analysis of covariance. Linear regression, therefore, was performed with the injury data as the dependent variable, and rework frequency and personnel hours as the independent variables. The regression results demonstrated that there is a significant association between injuries, and rework and personnel hours; it was revealed that both predictors accounted for 68.2% of the explained variability in injury frequency. Public-private partnerships (PPP) for infrastructure development and management have received significant attention in academic, institutional, and political circles over roughly the last two decades. This attention was prompted, to a great extent, by early experiments with PPP-type arrangements in Australia, Canada, and the United States coupled with the United Kingdom’s Private Finance Initiative policy—not to mention the experience of other parts of the world such as Asia, continental Europe, and South America. PPP policies and practices have evolved in other world regions, but the United States remains a relatively slow mover in this market. While varying explanations for this circumstance are plausible, the situation can play to America’s advantage since the nation can capitalize upon the tested experience of its international counterparts. Drawing upon data and information collected from two principal sources: (1) case histories of PPP projects in North America to date and (2) a scanning tour of Australia, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom in 2008, misconceptions regarding PPPs are clarified, contemporary international policies and practices are characterized, and recommendations for implementing PPPs for transportation infrastructure are made. Risk allocation in privately financed public infrastructure projects, which are mainly referred to as public-private partnership (PPP) projects, is a challenging job due to the nature of incomplete contracting. An investigation into the mechanism that guides the formation of efficient risk allocation strategies is thus desirable. Drawing on the transaction cost economics and resource-based view of organizational capability, this paper has identified five main features of the transactions associated with risk allocation in PPP projects. They include partners’ risk management routine, partners’ risk management mechanism, partners’ cooperation history, risk management environmental uncertainty, and partners’ risk management commitment. For achieving cost efficiency, different risk allocation strategies may suit different conditions of the features. Accordingly, a theoretical framework and five hypotheses were proposed for testing. Data collected in an industrywide survey were analyzed using multiple linear regression technique. It was found that generally, the identified features are determinants in the decision-making process of efficient risk allocation. Therefore, the proposed theoretical framework provides both government and private agencies with not only a logical and holistic understanding of but also a support tool for decision making on risk allocation strategy in PPP projects. By their nature, building refurbishment projects display unique characteristics, surfacing uncertainties, and complexity. These lead to unforeseen safety risks when compared to 'new build' projects. In recognition of this, resilience engineering (RE) provides a significant contribution to safety management in uncertain and complex work settings. Despite a recent trend in RE studies concerning construction, a model that explores the relationships between RE factors, specifically in the unique category of construction refurbishment, is yet to be produced. This research aims to examine the relationships between the RE factors (i.e., top management commitment, awareness, flexibility, and learning culture) that enable a resilient work environment in construction refurbishment projects. One hundred and twenty-six (126) responses were collected from participants involved in building refurbishment projects in Australia. The distinct nature of a four-factor RE model was confirmed using factor analysis. Structural equation modelling (SEM) identified the relationships among the RE factors. The results highlight that the action of top management toward safety was prominent and determined as a positive influence on the other RE factors. Learning culture also has a positive effect on flexibility and awareness and in addition, the effect of top-management commitment to awareness and flexibility is partially mediated by learning culture. Overall, the model shows the interplay between RE factors in attaining a resilient work environment that can anticipate, cope, and adapt to safety risks. The findings of this research provide guidance for practitioners and researchers in the design of safety interventions and can prevent prevailing differences in safety practices between head office and work site to achieve a resilient work environment in construction refurbishment work settings. Women's representation in construction and engineering continues to be low. Drawing on the stewardship theory, we investigated how women in the top management team and women in management drive the appointment and promotion of women at management and nonmanagement levels, respectively. We used a time lag research design and archival data from 495 construction and engineering organizations operating in Australia. The results of structural equation modeling suggest positive relationships between women's representation in management and both the appointments and promotions of women in nonmanagement roles. The findings also suggest some unpredicted relationships: women's representation in management is linked to the appointments of women managers, and hiring more female managers is linked to the promotion of more female managers. Psychosocial job quality has been proven to be linked to workers' mental health. Drawing on a life course perspective, this study sought to identify, compare, and contrast the psychosocial characteristics of job quality that are related to mental health in three age groups of manual/nonmanagerial construction workers, i.e., young workers, middle-aged workers, and older workers. Data were extracted from the national and longitudinal Household, Income, and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey data set. The study used 15 waves of data from the HILDA survey with 6,352 responses from 1,768 participants. Longitudinal random-intercept regression models were used to examine the association between each of five aspects of job quality (i.e., job demands and complexity, job control, perceived job security, effort-reward fairness, and job intensity) and mental health. Overall, the research results showed that construction workers' mental health declined when experiencing adverse job conditions and the magnitude of decline increased as the number of job adversities increased. Specifically, workers of the midage group experienced more accelerated decline in mental health compared with the other two groups when experiencing two adverse job conditions. Age-related differences were also identified in the way that individual job quality aspects are related to mental health. Although low job security and perceived unfairness of effort and reward were significant predictors of mental ill-health in all age groups, job demand and complexity and high job intensity were predictors of mental ill-health in midage and older construction workers but were not significant contributors to mental ill-health among younger workers. The findings highlight the need to develop targeted approaches to protecting and promoting the mental health of construction workers in different age groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The construction industry in many countries is faced with skill shortages. Attracting more female workers in the male-dominated construction industry can help alleviate this issue. However, perceived concerns of increased or specific Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risks for females could be a significant deterrent. Due to their marginal representation in various trade roles, the overall analyses of OHS incident data fail to capture the specific OHS concerns that apply to female construction workers. This study presents an empirical analyses of workers' compensation data obtained from Safe Work Australia for 12 years (2008–2019) to investigate specific OHS risks for female construction workers. The annual average incident trend does not present a steady increase or decrease in permanent and temporary incapacities among female construction workers. Moreover, the incident number, severity, and employment data together reveal that female workers in both professional and manual or trade occupations have lower incident rates than their male counterparts. However, the findings also reveal that: (1) building and plumbing women laborers and earthmoving plant operators are more prone to injuries that result in permanent incapacities; (2) fractures, soft tissue injuries, deafness, anxiety, stress, and depression lead to permanent incapacities among female workers; and (3) falls on the same level, muscular stress while handling objects, long-term exposure to sounds, work pressure, workplace harassment, and bullying result in permanently incapacitating injuries. The study also noted the differences in the occupations, mechanisms of incidents, and injury types that contribute to most incidents among male and female construction workers. The findings of this study can help training providers, construction organizations, and practitioners identify specific OHS concerns for developing more comprehensive OHS management plans, training, and awareness programs for female construction workers. The existing OHS management and training programs should be remodeled accordingly to incorporate gender-specific OHS risks and injury mechanisms rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Clients, specifically in public projects, may stipulate that the contractor provides gender-specific OHS management plans to ensure the OHS of workers of different genders. It is vital to educate female construction workers from various occupations about specific OHS risks, incident mechanisms, and preventive actions. The higher occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders due to handling objects demands redesigning work processes to reduce female construction workers' manual handling of objects. The present study also shows that work pressure, anxiety, and depression are prevalent among female construction workers, taxing their mental health and causing permanent incapacities. The psychosocial conditions and work pressure resulting from these health conditions must be managed at both the project and organizational levels to attract and retain more female workers in the construction industry. Survey results provide a preliminary assessment of the relative contribution of a range of tactical business strategies to innovation performance by firms in the Australian construction industry. Over 1,300 firms were surveyed in 2004, resulting in a response rate of 29%. Respondents were classified as high, medium or low innovators according to an innovation index based on the novelty and impact of their innovations and their adoption of listed technological and organizational advances. The relative significance of 23 business strategies concerning (1) employees; (2) marketing; (3) technology; (4) knowledge; and (5) relationships was examined by determining the extent to which they distinguished high innovators from low innovators. The individual business strategies that most strongly distinguished high innovators were (1) investing in R&D; (2) participating in partnering and alliances on projects; (3) ensuring project learnings are transferred into continuous business processes; (4) monitoring international best practice; and (5) recruiting new graduates. Of the five types of strategies assessed, marketing strategies were the least significant in supporting innovation. Project time–cost relationships were examined by using project scope factors as predictors for 161 construction projects that were completed in various Australian States using the multiple regression technique of weighted least squares. The analysis was performed between project duration (i.e., time), project type, procurement method, tender type, gross floor area (GFA), and number of stories. An alternative model to that proposed by Bromilow more than three decades ago for forecasting time and cost performance is proposed. It is shown that GFA and the number of stories in a building are key determinants of time performance in projects. Furthermore, the results indicate that cost is a poor predictor of time performance. The Construction Industry Institute in Australia, modeled on the U.S. group of the same title, published a "Constructability Principles File" in November 1992. These principles include precepts used in conducting a postconstruction analysis by a project team drawn from the staff of Prince-Bisley Pty. Ltd., Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, and the University of Southern Queensland. There may be a danger in conducting such an evaluation if participants wrongly believe that managers will seek to apportion blame for disappointing outcomes. A protocol was therefore established and is presented in this paper; the protocol clearly sets out guidelines and states that the aim is not to seek scapegoats but to improve company performance. Case-study material is presented for a feed mill project, that was designed and fabricated in Australia for erection in China, which ran over budget and was late in shipment. Feedback from participants in the review is summarized, together with recommendations for action by management to improve the organization's performance on similar future projects. Collaborative infrastructure projects use hybrid formal and informal governance structures to manage transactions. Based on previous desktop research, the authors identified the key mechanisms underlying project governance, and posited the performance implications of the governance. The current paper extends that qualitative research by testing the veracity of those findings using data from 320 Australian construction organizations. The results provide, for the first time, reliable and valid scales to measure governance and performance of collaborative projects, and the relationship between them. The results confirm seven of seven hypothesized governance mechanisms, 30 of 43 hypothesized underlying actions, eight of eight hypothesised key performance indicators, and the dual importance of formal and informal governance. A startling finding of the study was that the implementation intensity of informal mechanisms (noncontractual conditions) is a greater predictor of project performance variance than that of formal mechanisms (contractual conditions). Further, contractual conditions do not directly impact project performance; instead their impact is mediated by the noncontractual features of a project. Construction workforces' health behaviors have received little attention compared with work injury risks and management. Formulated caffeinated beverage (FCB) (energy drink) consumption is relatively new to construction sites and excessive consumption may have effects on both health and safety owing to known short- and long-term physiological responses. This study contributes to understanding drivers and deterrents of caffeine and FCB consumption in construction. Data were collected from workers at six construction sites in Queensland, Australia, using mixed-method research design involving semistructured interviews (70) and quantitative surveys (n = 250). Convergent interviewing underpinned by the theory of reasoned action was used to analyze qualitative interviews. Bivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine determinants of caffeine and FCB consumption. Work hours were associated with caffeine consumption >210 mg=day (β = -0.046, p = 0.037). Qualitative results indicate energy drinks are consumed widely and regularly on site, with stress and attempts to manage the pace, timing, and intensity seen as drivers for consumption. The subject of poor cost performance has been widely published in the mainstream project and construction management literature. Nevertheless, the underlying responsibilities of the key stakeholders (clients, consultants, and contractors) in managing this chronic problem in the Australian construction industry remain unclear. By performing an in-depth analysis of the roles and responsibilities of these key stakeholders, this research is intended to unfold the industrywide perception of cost performance being heavily reliant on the contractor's performance alone. Based on a thorough literature review and relevant industry inputs, 73 attributes associated with cost performance were identified for investigation. Based on the relative importance weighing technique on 48 selected attributes, planning and scheduling deficiencies have the highest impact on cost performance from clients, consultants, and contractors' perspectives. Confirmatory factor analysis on the combined responses across all three groups suggests that robust control procedures and adequate programming, along with efficient design and effective site management, are the most critical factors. These factors are primarily associated with the responsibilities of contractors and consultants for managing cost overruns in projects. However, the client's responsibility in facilitating effective management of these factors within the project environment is crucial. Multivariate regression analysis performed on eight factors' scores highlighted the influence of five significant factors () on managing cost overruns. The statistical characteristics of cost overruns experienced from contract award in 276 Australian construction and engineering projects were analyzed. The skewness and kurtosis values of the cost overruns are computed to determine if the empirical distribution of the data follows a normal distribution. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Anderson-Darling, and chi-squared nonparametric tests are used to determine the goodness of fit of the selected probability distributions. A three-parameter Frechet probability function is found to describe the behavior of cost overruns and provide the best overall distribution fit. The Frechet distribution is then used to calculate the probability of a cost overrun being experienced. The statistical characteristics of contract size and cost overruns were also analyzed. The Cauchy (), Wakeby (A$1 to 10 million, ) and four-parameter Burr (A$11 to 50 million) tests were found to provide the best distribution fits and used to calculate cost overrun probabilities by contract size. Ascertaining the best fit probability distribution from an empirical distribution at contract award can produce realistic probabilities of cost overruns, which should then be incorporated into a construction cost contingency. A multidimensional work-family conflict (WFC) scale was tested using a sample of 169 workers in the Australian construction industry. The construction sample showed higher mean scores for time-based, strain-based, and behavior-based work-interference with family (WIF) than scores reported in international studies that have used the multidimensional scale. Waged construction workers, who work on-site in direct construction activity, reported higher levels of time-based and strain-based WIF than salaried workers, who work predominantly in office-based roles. Mean levels of family-interference with work (FIW) in the construction sample were generally comparable to levels reported in previous research. A principal components analysis revealed four clear dimensions of WFC. These dimensions were significantly correlated with other variables of theoretical relevance indicating acceptable criterion validity. The experience of WIF varied by workers' employment situation, sex, and work location, while the experience of FIW varied by workers' age. The results suggest that the use of global measures of WFC might mask important differences in construction workers' experiences at the work-family interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Construction professionals are subjected to a plethora of occupational demands that can have a negative effect on their psychological wellbeing. Such demands can have an adverse influence on individual and organizational performance. To investigate the nature of self and social supports and mental health among construction professionals, an exploratory study was undertaken using the Stress and Mental Health Survey. The survey was distributed to construction professionals throughout Australia and 449 responses were received. Analysis revealed that those working for a contracting organization on-site reported higher levels of poor mental health and greater work stress than consultants. Those working on-site also experienced greater levels of self-stress, whereas consultants reported higher levels of self and work support. Work support was a significant predictor of poor mental health for consultants. Good health, however, was predicted by self, situational, and work support, whereas those working for a contractor only self-support predicated good mental health. It is concluded that while supports are essential in the fostering of good mental health, the absence of these supports can have a significant impact on poor mental health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within Australia, civil engineering works continue to meet the insatiable demand for new infrastructure despite project complexity and cost and schedule overruns. A significant factor that can contribute to such overruns is rework; yet to date research into the root causes and consequential costs of rework in civil infrastructure projects has been limited. Using a questionnaire survey, rework costs and probable causes were obtained from 115 civil infrastructure projects. Stepwise multiple regression was then used to determine the significant variables that contributed to rework. The regression model revealed that the following five significant predictors accounted for 25% of the variance in total rework cost: (1) ineffective use of information technologies; (2) excessive client involvement in the project; (3) lack of clearly defined working procedures; (4) changes made at the request of the client; and (5) insufficient changes initiated by the contractor to improve quality. The findings also revealed that mean total rework costs were 10% of the contract value for the sample. Interestingly, the extent of rework experienced was significantly correlated with project cost and schedule growth (p<0.01). It is suggested that future work is required to determine the underlying factors that contribute to rework in civil infrastructure projects before effective preventive strategies can be identified. Project alliancing is a new alternative to traditional project delivery systems, especially in the commercial building sector. The Collaborative Process is a theoretical model of people and systems characteristics that are required to reduce the adversarial nature of most construction projects. Although developed separately, both are responses to the same pressures. Project alliancing was just used successfully to complete the National Museum of Australia. This project was analyzed as a case study to determine the extent to which it could be classified as a “collaborative project.” Five key elements of The Collaborative Process were reviewed and numerous examples from the management of this project were cited that support the theoretical recommendations of this model. In the case of this project, significant added value was delivered to the client and many innovations resulted from the collective work of the parties to the contract. It was concluded that project alliances for commercial buildings offer many advantages over traditional project delivery systems, which are related to increasing the levels of collaboration among a project management team.
