In Gordon (1998), Gordon presented alternate proofs of several well known results in elementary real analysis using tagged partitions. In this paper, we provide a set of alternative proofs based on the dyadic partitions. An important difference between tagged and dyadic partitions is that the results based on the dyadic partition can be obtained constructively, i.e. an algorithm is supplied to reach the conclusion of each proof. In addition, the construction involves only concepts and results presented in a first course real analysis, which is the reason why, comparing tagged partition and its theory, the proofs based on dyadic partition are more straightforward and accessible to a wide range of audience. Abstract: In the present paper we study the computation of the rank of a block bidiagonal Toeplitz (BBT) sequence of matrices. We propose matrix-based, numerical and symbolical, updating and direct methods, computing the rank of BBT matrices and comparing them with classical procedures. The methods deploy the special form of the BBT sequence, significantly reducing the required flops and leading to fast and efficient algorithms. The numerical implementation of the algorithms computes the numerical rank in contrast with the symbolical implementation, which guarantees the computation of the exact rank of the matrix. The combination of numerical and symbolical operations suggests a new approach in software mathematical computations denoted as hybrid computations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this work we construct three novel families of approximating subdivision schemes that generate piecewise exponential polynomials and we show how to convert these into interpolating schemes of great interest in curve design for their ability to reproduce important analytical shapes and to provide highly smooth limit curves with a controllable tension. In particular, throughout this paper we will focus on the derivation of 6-point interpolating schemes that turn out to be unique in combining vital ingredients like -continuity, simplicity of definition, ease of implementation, user independency, tension control and ability to reproduce salient trigonometric and transcendental curves. Abstract: This paper presents an impulsive optimal control model for solving the optimal designing problem of the trajectory of horizontal wells. We take fully into account the effect of unknown disturbances in drilling. The optimal control problem can be converted into a nonlinear parametric optimization by integrating the state equation. We discuss here that the locally optimal solution depends in a continuous way on the parameters (disturbances) and utilize this property to propose a revised Hooke–Jeeves algorithm. The uniform design technique is incorporated into the revised Hooke–Jeeves algorithm to handle the multimodal objective function. The numerical simulation is in accordance with theoretical results. Abstract: In this paper, a subspace limited memory BFGS algorithm for solving large-scale bound constrained optimization problems is developed. It is modifications of the subspace limited memory quasi-Newton method proposed by Ni and Yuan [Q. Ni, Y.X. Yuan, A subspace limited memory quasi-Newton algorithm for large-scale nonlinear bound constrained optimization, Math. Comput. 66 (1997) 1509–1520]. An important property of our proposed method is that more limited memory BFGS update is used. Under appropriate conditions, the global convergence of the method is established. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show how geometric and algebraic approaches lead us to a new symplectic elementary transformations: the 2-D symplectic Householder transformations. Their features are studied in details. Their interesting properties allow us to construct a new algorithm for computing a SR factorization. This algorithm is based only on these 2-D symplectic Householder transformations. Its new features are highlighted. The study shows that, in the symplectic case, the new algorithm is the corresponding one to the classical QR factorization algorithm, via the Householder transformations. Abstract: Exclusion algorithms have been used recently to find all solutions of a system of nonlinear equations or to find the global minimum of a function over a compact domain. These algorithms are based on a minimization condition that can be applied to each cell in the domain. In this paper, we consider Lipschitz functions of order and give a new minimization condition for the exclusion algorithm. Abstract: Modeling of multibody systems is an important though demanding field of application for interval arithmetic. Interval modeling of dynamics is particularly challenging, not least because of the differential equations which have to be solved in the process. Most modeling tools transform these equations into a (non-autonomous) initial value problem, interval algorithms for solving of which are known. The challenge then consists in finding interfaces between these algorithms and the modeling tools. This includes choosing between “symbolic” and “numerical” modeling environments, transforming the usually non-autonomous resulting system into an autonomous one, ensuring conformity of the new interval version to the old numerical, etc. In this paper, we focus on modeling multibody systems’ dynamics with the interval extension of the “numerical” environment MOBILE, discuss the techniques which make the uniform treatment of interval and non-interval modeling easier, comment on the wrapping effect, and give reasons for our choice of MOBILE by comparing the results achieved with its help with those obtained by analogous symbolic tools. Abstract: We discuss questions of eigenvalue conditioning. We study in some depth relationships between the classical theory of conditioning and the theory of the zero-structured conditioning, and we derive from the existing theory formulae for the mathematical objects involved. Then an algorithm to compare the zero-structured individual condition numbers of a set of simple eigenvalues with the traditional ones is presented. Numerical tests are reported to highlight how the algorithm provides interesting information about eigenvalue sensitivity when the perturbations in the matrix have an arbitrarily assigned zero-structure. Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a new inversion free variant of the basic fixed point iteration method for obtaining a maximal positive definite solution of the nonlinear matrix equation . It is more accurate than Zhan''s algorithm (J. Sci. Comput. 17 (1996) 1167) and has less number of operations than the algorithm of Guo and Lancaster (Math. Comput. 68 (1999) 1589). We derive convergence conditions of the iteration and existence conditions of a solution to the problem. Abstract: This paper presents explicit algebraic transformations of some Gauss hypergeometric functions. Specifically, the transformations considered apply to hypergeometric solutions of hypergeometric differential equations with the local exponent differences such that are positive integers and . All algebraic transformations of these Gauss hypergeometric functions are considered. We show that apart from classical transformations of degree 2, 3, 4, 6 there are several other transformations of degree 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 18, 24.
