We present verification methods to compute error bounds for all eigenvectors of a Hermitian matrix as well as for all singular vectors of a rectangular real or complex matrix. In case of clusters these are bounds for an orthonormal basis of the invariant subspace or singular vector space, respectively. Individual error bounds for all eigenvalues and singular values including clustered and/or multiple ones are computed as well. The computed bounds do contain the true result with mathematical certainty, and the algorithms apply to interval data as well. In that case the computed bounds are true for every real/complex matrix within the tolerances. The computational complexity to compute inclusions of all eigen/singular pairs of an n × n matrix or m × n matrix is O (n 3) or O (m n 2) operations, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a verified computation method for eigenvalues in a region and the corresponding eigenvectors of generalized Hermitian eigenvalue problems. The proposed method uses complex moments to extract the eigencomponents of interest from a random matrix and uses the Rayleigh–Ritz procedure to project a given eigenvalue problem into a reduced eigenvalue problem. The complex moment is given by contour integral and approximated using numerical quadrature. We split the error in the complex moment into the truncation error of the quadrature and rounding errors and evaluate each. This idea for error evaluation inherits our previous Hankel matrix approach, whereas the proposed method enables verification of eigenvectors and requires half the number of quadrature points for the previous approach to reduce the truncation error to the same order. Moreover, the Rayleigh–Ritz procedure approach forms a transformation matrix that enables verification of the eigenvectors. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method is faster than previous methods while maintaining verification performance and works even for nearly singular matrix pencils and in the presence of multiple and nearly multiple eigenvalues. A new iterative method for computing the polar decomposition of any rectangular complex matrix is presented and analyzed. The study of the convergence shows that this method has order of convergence six. The inverse eigenvalue problem and the associated optimal approximation problem for Hermitian reflexive matrices with respect to a normal { k + 1 } -potent matrix are considered. First, we study the existence of the solutions of the associated inverse eigenvalue problem and present an explicit form for them. Abstract: This paper is concerned with some generalizations of the Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting (HSS) iteration for solving continuous Sylvester equations. The main contents we will introduce are the normal and skew-Hermitian splitting (NSS) iteration methods for the continuous Sylvester equations. It is shown that the new schemes can outperform the standard HSS method in some situations. Theoretical analysis shows that the NSS methods converge unconditionally to the exact solution of the continuous Sylvester equations. Moreover, we derive the upper bound of the contraction factor of the NSS iterations. Numerical experiments further show the effectiveness of our new methods. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Eigenvalue problems arise in many application areas ranging from computational fluid dynamics to information retrieval. In these fields we are often interested in only a few eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of a sparse matrix. In this paper, we comment on the modifications of the eigenvalue problem that can simplify the computation of those eigenpairs. These transformations allow us to avoid difficulties associated with non-Hermitian eigenvalue problems, such as the lack of reliable non-Hermitian eigenvalue solvers, by mapping them into generalized Hermitian eigenvalue problems. Also, they allow us to expose and explore parallelism. They require knowledge of a selected eigenvalue and preserve its eigenspace. The positive definiteness of the Hermitian part is inherited by the matrices in the generalized Hermitian eigenvalue problem. The position of the selected eigenspace in the ordering of the eigenvalues is also preserved under certain conditions. We study convergence conditions for the additive and the multiplicative splitting iteration methods, i.e., two generalizations of the additive and the multiplicative Schwarz iterations, for Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems of linear equations, under an algebraic setting. Theoretical analyses show that when the coefficient and the splitting matrices are Hermitian, or non-Hermitian but diagonalizable, satisfying mild conditions, both additive and multiplicative splitting iteration methods are convergent, even if the coefficient matrix is indefinite.
