The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is an essential nutrition assistance program that has led to successful health outcomes and healthcare access. To alleviate discomfort associated with WIC shopping at stores, the Congress mandated the transition to electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card system from paper vouchers. This study aimed to explore the experiences of WIC recipients in using EBT cards in stores. WIC recipients from one WIC clinic in northern New Jersey (N = 220) participated in this study. An online survey was framed under the theory of planned behavior to probe their underlying behavioral, normative, and control beliefs of using EBT cards. Using content analyses, dominating themes of each belief were extracted. Participants composed of Hispanic (91.2%) with mean age of 31.68 (SD = 7.69). Most frequently mentioned advantages of using EBT cards were convenience and ease (34.3%) followed by fast and efficient (28.5%). Participants noted that most people would approve of using EBT cards (70%), especially those who receive the benefits and approve of the public assistance (16.7%). They stated that having improved store inventory and an increase in WIC-authorized stores (17.2%) would make the EBT cards use easy. The transition to EBT cars allowed purchase flexibility, alleviated stigma and the purchase process burdens, but the challenges associated with WIC app usage and store specific issues remained. Gloves can serve as barriers to decrease the transfer of microorganisms from hands to food. Glove changing by food vendors is particularly important when handling paper currency, as bills can carry and transmit microbes from person to person. The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) To ascertain the extent to which gloves are changed after monetary transactions in food vendors at a major mall in New Jersey; and (2) to document the level of bacterial contamination and the presence of coliform bacteria on paper currency handled by these vendors. This study was conducted with two phases: Phase 1, in which 10 min of observation of food workers was completed followed by a monetary sample collection and testing, and Phase 2, in which 1 h of observations were conducted. During Phase 1, gloves were changed after 4 (2.3%) of the 174 transactions. All the dollar bills collected from all 17 vendors during Phase 1 exhibited bacterial contamination. The number of CFUs ranged from 1.18 × 10 to 1.13 × 10, and bills collected from 6 of the 17 vendors (35.3%) tested positive for coliform bacteria. In Phase 2, gloves were changed after 3.35% of the 1193 transactions observed. This study makes the critical connection between the lack of compliance by food workers with the health code, and the contaminated money they may be handling while dispensing food. Vaccines are critical for curtailing the COVID-19 pandemic and may represent an important tool for return to "normalcy" on college campuses in the Fall of 2021. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent of vaccination coverage and intention to vaccinate among college students. College students (N = 457) enrolled in the Spring 2021 semester at a university in New Jersey completed a cross-sectional survey. The survey collected information on demographics, COVID-19 and vaccination history, knowledge levels and sources of COVID-19 vaccine information, and vaccine attitudes. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with vaccination, and the intention to vaccinate among non-vaccinated students. Results indicate that 23% (n = 105) of participants reported being vaccinated already. Among non-vaccinated students, 52.8% indicated their intention to receive the vaccine when it is made available to college students. Students who were health care workers (adjusted odds ratio, aOR = 4.17, p < 0.001), had a family member who had received a COVID-19 vaccine (aOR = 5.03, p < 0.001), exhibited greater positive attitudes regarding vaccination (aOR = 1.12, p < 0.001), and received a seasonal flu vaccine (aOR = 1.97, p < 0.05) were more likely to have received the COVID-19 vaccine. Among non-vaccinated students, those who discussed COVID-19 vaccine information with others (aOR = 5.38, p < 0.001), and exhibited more overall positive attitudes regarding vaccination (aOR = 2.69, p < 0.001), were more likely to indicate their willingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Findings of this study highlight the need for additional education and vaccine outreach aimed at promoting uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine among college students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) remains a problem in the United States as reactivation leads to active TB disease particularly in persons with risk factors. The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitudes and health behaviors related to testing and treatment of LTBI among non-US-born South Asians (SA) in New Jersey (NJ). A cross-sectional, community-based survey was the primary tool for gathering data. Eligibility criteria included being at least 18 years of age, self-identifying as SA, verbal consent for participation, and birth in a high TB endemic country. A hardcopy survey was distributed at local South Asian health fairs. The survey included questions about demographics, knowledge, beliefs on TB, and health behaviors (testing and treatment). Descriptive statistics were performed for all survey responses. Logistic regression models were constructed to assess the association of characteristics/beliefs and study outcomes. The survey sample size included 387 respondents. A total of 197 (54%) of respondents reported ever been tested for TB. Those who were tested for TB were generally younger, had higher educational levels, higher household incomes, and were more likely to have health insurance than those not ever tested for TB. Significantly more respondents who self-reported ever been tested for TB believed that TB was very or extremely serious (71.1% vs. 56.2%, p = 0.004). Also, significantly more respondents who self-reported ever been tested for TB believed that it was important to get tested (91.2% vs. 63.3%, p < 0.001). Several community level measures of healthy food access exist, but evaluation efforts have been limited leaving uncertainty about how to prioritize communities for intervention. This study aimed to assess several existing measures to inform statewide public health planning efforts in New Jersey, USA. We assessed agreement between community measures of healthy food access and then evaluated the predictive validity of each measure by describing its association with complete fruit and vegetable cash-value voucher redemption (proportion redeemed ≥70, ≥80, ≥90%) among 30,078 low-income households participating in the New Jersey Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) during 2013-2014. The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) food desert measure agreed with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) no healthier food retailers (NHFR) measure for 76.5% of New Jersey census tracts, but the Kappa statistic was only 0.10. For urban households, the NHFR measure was negatively associated with complete redemption after adjusting for demographic factors and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participation (≥70% odds ratio (OR) 0.68, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.61-0.75; ≥80% OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.62-0.73; ≥90% OR 0.72, 95% CI 0.66-0.77). For rural households, a negative association was observed for the USDA's low-income/low-vehicle access measure (≥70% OR 0.48, 95% CI 0.26-0.90). South Asians are the third largest Asian group in the US and among the fastest growing racial groups in New Jersey. Tobacco consumption among South Asians is characterized by several smoked and smokeless tobacco products indigenous to the Indian subcontinent. However, there is a paucity of research on tobacco use behaviors among South Asians in the US. The goal of this study was to examine the awareness and use of South Asian tobacco products such as bidis, gutkha, paan, paan masala, and zarda as well as other potentially carcinogenic products such as supari, their context of use, and their cultural significance among South Asians living in the US. Eight focus groups were conducted with South Asian adults living in Central New Jersey. Overall, participants were aware of a wide variety of foreign and American tobacco products with older South Asians identifying a greater variety of indigenous products compared to younger South Asians. Hookah was consistently recognized as popular among the younger generation while products such as paan or paan masala were more commonly identified with elders. Use of tobacco-related products such as paan and supari were described as common at social gatherings or after meals. In addition, light or social users of South Asian tobacco products, including products not consistently defined as tobacco, may not report tobacco use on a survey. Better understanding of the use of these products among South Asians and how some may classify tobacco usage can inform future research and public health interventions in these communities. The goal of this study was to examine colorectal cancer (CRC) screening practices and factors associated with CRC screening among foreign-born South Asians living in the metropolitan New York-New Jersey area. Two hundred and eight men and women recruited from community settings in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area completed a questionnaire that included demographics, CRC screening practices, health care access and practices, attitudes about the health care system, primary care physician support for CRC screening, cultural factors, and attitudes about CRC screening and CRC worry. Almost a third of the sample had not heard of any of CRC screening tests. Approximately 62 % of the sample had never had a CRC screening test and approximately 69 % of the sample was not currently on schedule with regard to CRC screening. When the relative contribution of significant correlates were evaluated, participants who had lived in the US for a longer time, who endorsed more CRC screening benefits, and who endorsed fewer CRC screening barriers were significantly more likely to have had CRC screening in the past. Participants who were more likely to use English in their daily life, who endorsed more CRC screening benefits, and endorsed fewer CRC screening barriers were more likely to be on schedule with regard to CRC screening. In conclusion, awareness of CRC screening and uptake of screening was low in this population of foreign-born South Asians. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination continues to lag behind other adolescent vaccines, especially in areas with pervasive disparities in HPV-related cancers. The purpose of this study was to examine HPV vaccine completion and dosing intervals among low-income adolescents in urban areas. The study included electronic health record data on HPV vaccination for 872 adolescents who received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine. Only 28.4 % completed the 3-dose series. For the whole sample, HPV vaccine completion was higher for non-English speakers and among adolescents seen at Newark-South and East Orange sites. Completion was higher among non-English speaking female and Hispanic adolescents, females seen in Newark-South and East Orange sites, and insured Black adolescents. Completion was also dramatically lower among non-English speaking Black adolescents seen at Newark-North, Irvington, and Orange sites (12.5 %) compared to other Black adolescents (22.0-44.4 %). The mean dosing intervals were 5.5 months (SD = 4.6) between dose 1 and 2 and 10 months (SD = 6.1) between dose 1 and 3. Longer durations between vaccine doses were found among uninsured adolescents and those seen at Newark-North, Irvington, and Orange sites. Non-English speakers had longer duration between dose 1 and 3. Further, durations between dose 1 and 3 were dramatically longer among insured adolescents seen at Newark-North, Irvington, and Orange locations for the whole sample (M = 11.70; SD = 7.12) and among Hispanic adolescents (M = 13.45; SD = 8.54). Understanding how the study predictors facilitate or impede HPV vaccination is critical to reducing disparities in cervical and other HPV-related cancer, especially among Black, Hispanic, and low-income populations. Shared decision making is recommended before prostate cancer screening. Little is known regarding reasons why men choose to get or not get prostate cancer screening, particularly in white or Hispanic men. We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews of 64 men, age 50 years and over, purposively sampled from men who were never screened for prostate cancer or who screened abnormal in northern New Jersey. Qualitative analysis was iterative using a grounded theory approach involving a series of immersion/crystallization cycles. Men who had abnormal PSA tests either actively sought out screening because of family history of prostate cancer or received their screening as part of a routine physical examination. Men who were never screened avoided testing primarily because they perceived they were at low risk due to lack of urinary symptoms, lack of family history of prostate cancer, or beliefs that healthy behaviors can prevent prostate cancer. Other reasons for not getting screened included: fear of cancer, embarrassment over digital rectal exam, confusion over the screening procedure, and skepticism over the benefits of screening. Some men were willing to get screened if structural barriers were removed, their doctor recommended it, or if they were prompted by urinary symptoms. None had discussions with physicians about potential risks of prostate cancer screening. Men received their health information through lay media, friends or family members. Educating men in the community through mass media about benefits and limitations of prostate cancer screening may be more effective to promote and facilitate shared decision making with their physicians. The aim of this study was to identify and describe local ordinances in New Jersey that make it illegal for minors to purchase, possess, and/or use tobacco (PPU). A coding instrument was formulated and content analysis of each ordinance was conducted between March 1999 and January 2002. Additionally, key informant interviews with community officials were conducted by telephone between September 2000 and February 2002 to collect qualitative information on implementation and enforcement. Content analysis of identified ordinances assessed. when the ordinance was enacted, specific laws and clauses included, enforcing party, area of jurisdiction, and penalties associated with a citation. Key informant interviews assessed the catalyst for enacting the ordinance, penalties, enforcement activity, and method of tracking citations. As of January 2002, 48 municipalities in New Jersey had passed mandates banning minor purchase, possession, and/or use of tobacco. Of the 48 ordinances reviewed, 71% were passed during or after 1998. Nearly all of the ordinances (94%) included prohibited minor usage of tobacco, 77% prohibited minor possession of tobacco and 23% prohibited minor purchase of tobacco. In over 80% of communities, municipal police departments were responsible for enforcement. Two out of 35 communities reached for interview reported having a formal system for tracking enforcement or citations. The results illustrate that local PPU ordinances in New Jersey vary widely both in principle and in practice, suggesting that such ordinances may be too heterogeneous and lacking in cohesion to have any impact on youth smoking. Prior work has demonstrated that international medical graduates physicians are less likely to recommend treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) for themselves or their patients. Our objective was to measure differences in LTBI treatment attitudes among resident physicians when diagnosis is established with a positive tuberculin skin test (TST), as compared with a positive interferon gamma release assay (IGRA), and to determine whether a resident physician's personal history of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination was associated with these attitudes. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of Internal Medicine resident physicians at two different training sites. Based on the country and year of birth, each respondent was assigned a putative BCG vaccination status based on a query of the BCG World Atlas (). We then asked whether the respondent agreed or disagreed with offering LTBI treatment in several clinical scenarios. Among their patients with a history of BCG vaccination, we found that resident physicians were least likely to agree with LTBI treatment for a first-ever positive TST, and most likely to agree with treatment for a converted IGRA. Contrary to our hypothesis, a resident physician's personal history of BCG vaccination was not associated with their LTBI treatment attitudes. Resident physicians broadly disagreed with LTBI treatment guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Educational interventions designed to improve adherence to LTBI treatment recommendations should be broadly implemented, without regard to the educational or cultural backgrounds of physician. In 1947, a smallpox outbreak occurred in New York City with a total of twelve cases and two deaths. In order to contain this outbreak, the New York City Department of Health launched a mass immunization campaign that over a period of some 60 days vaccinated 6.35 million people. This article examines in detail the epidemiology of this outbreak and the measures employed to contain it. In 1976, a swine influenza strain was isolated among a few recruits at a US Army training camp at Fort Dix, New Jersey. It was concluded at the time that this virus possibly represented a re-appearance of the 1918 influenza pandemic influenza strain. As a result, a mass national immunization program was launched by the federal government. From its inception, the program encountered a myriad of challenges ranging from doubts that it was even necessary to the development of Guillain-Barré paralysis among some vaccine recipients. This paper examines the planning for and implementation of the swine flu immunization program in New York City. It also compares it to the smallpox vaccination program of 1947. Despite equivalent financial and personnel resources, leadership and organizational skills, the 1976 program only immunized approximately a tenth of the number of New York City residents vaccinated in 1947. The reasons for these marked differences in outcomes are discussed in detail.

The present study aimed to find the awareness level of cancer information among Asian Americans in the Delaware Valley region (Pennsylvania and South Jersey). A cross-sectional self-report survey was conducted with a sample of 1374 Asian Americans including Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Cambodians. The sample was collected by using a stratified-cluster proportional sampling technique. This paper assessed self-reported smoking behaviors, knowledge of smoking cessation methods, availability of health professional's advice in quitting smoking in the past 12 months, awareness of the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service, knowledge of, and interest in participation in cancer clinical trials for identified Asian smokers. Overall, the level of awareness of cancer information services among the four subgroups was low. Among current and former smokers, only 31% had been advised by a health care professional to quit smoking. Forty-three percent used at least one smoking cessation method to quit in the past. The results also reveal an increased awareness level among those who had health insurance, higher education and were less likely to speak their native language. Significant differences on cancer awareness existed among the four ethnic groups as well. This study suggests urgent needs to educate Asian Americans about important cancer control issues and services and highlights the differences in baseline knowledge and attitudes among the various ethnic groups.
