Oklahoma's medical cannabis is some of the least restrictive in the US. Previous research suggests that American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) have higher rates of cannabis use than other racial or ethnic groups. The goals of this paper are, first, to look at cannabis use among high school students living on the Cherokee Nation Reservation before (2017) and after (2019) medical cannabis because legal in Oklahoma (2018) utilizing the Cherokee Nation Youth Risk Behavior Survey (CNYRBS). Second, to describe the socio-demographic characteristics of youth using cannabis in the Cherokee Nation Reservation. Data were retrieved from the 2017 and 2019 CNYRBS. The data for this study included 1,216 high school students who completed the 2017 and 1,476 who completed the 2019 CNYRBS. After removal of incomplete records, there were 2,602 students whose data was analyzed in this study. Data were weighted to be representative of public-school students attending grades 9–12 within Cherokee Nation Reservation. Despite the legalization of medical cannabis in Oklahoma in 2018, there was no change in cannabis use among youth between 2017 and 2019. There were variations in cannabis use based on demographic factors and other substance uses. AIAN individuals had higher odds of current cannabis use compared to non-Hispanic White students, but there were no differences based on ethnicity. Additionally, the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, alcohol, and illegal drugs were associated with increased odds of cannabis use among both current and former users compared to those who had never used it. There was no spike in use among youth at least immediately after the legalization of cannabis in the Cherokee Nation Reservation. The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the difficulty of the US public health system to respond effectively to vulnerable subpopulations, causing disproportionate rates of morbidity and mortality. New York Haredi-Orthodox Jewish communities represent a group that have been heavily impacted by Covid-19. Little research has examined their experience or perceptions toward Covid-19 and vaccines. We conducted a cross-sectional, observational study to explore the experience of Covid-19 among Haredim. Paper surveys were self-administered between December 2020 and January 2021 in Haredi neighborhood pediatricians' offices in Brooklyn, New York. Of 102 respondents, 43% reported either a positive SARS-CoV-2 viral or antibody test. Participants trusted their physicians, Orthodox medical organizations, and rabbinic leaders for medical information. Knowledge of Covid-19 transmission and risk was good (69% answered ≥ 4/6 questions correctly). Only 12% of respondents would accept a Covid-19 vaccine, 41% were undecided and 47% were strongly hesitant. Independent predictors of strong vaccine hesitancy included believing natural infection to be better than vaccination for developing immunity (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 4.28; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23–14.86), agreement that prior infection provides a path toward resuming communal life (aOR 4.10; 95% CI 1.22–13.77), and pandemic-related loss of trust in physicians (aOR 5.01; 95% CI 1.05–23.96). The primary disseminators of health information for self-protective religious communities should be stakeholders who understand these groups' unique health needs. In communities with significant Covid-19 experience, vaccination messaging may need to be tailored toward protecting infection-naïve individuals and boosting natural immunity against emerging variants. The provision of care to older persons can impose significant burden on those providing care, burdens influenced by care recipient characteristic, caregiver attributes and availability of social support. This paper focuses on identifying relationships between caregiver burden and the socio-demographic, health and functional status attributes of care recipients age 60 years and older in Jamaica. A nationally representative cross-sectional study was done among persons providing non-institutional care for a single person 60 years and older. Data were obtained from a total of 180 caregivers from the four geographic health regions of Jamaica using the Zarit Burden Interview and a 44-question structured questionnaire. Associations between caregiver burden and socio-demographic, health and functional status of care recipients were examined and logistic regression applied to ascertain independent predictors of caregiver burden. The results revealed statistically significant relationships between caregiver burden and care recipients' receipt of conditional cash transfer grants and the ability to toilet independently. In multivariate analysis, ability to toilet remained a significant predictor of caregiver burden—Caregivers who had care recipients who were able to toilet independently were 71% less likely to have mild to severe caregiver burden compared to those who had care recipients that were not able to toilet (OR 0.29; 95% CI 0.14–0.57). To assess energy drink (ED) consumption, potential ED correlates, and ED-related motivations among a sample of college students to determine differences based on athlete status (student athlete vs. non-athlete). Six hundred and ninety-two college students completed surveys at a large private university in the United States. Participants completed a paper based questionnaire assessing ED and ED-related variables. Over thirty-six percent (197 non-athletes, 58 student athletes) of participants reported ED consumption in the preceding 30 days. Multivariately, there was no difference in ED consumption based on athlete status. Heavy episodic drinking and prescription stimulant misuse were both correlated with increased ED consumption. ED motivations differed based on the frequency of ED consumption. ED use was common among student athletes and non-athletes in our sample. It is important to be aware of the correlation between heavy episodic drinking, prescription stimulant misuse, and ED consumption among college student populations because of the adverse consequences associated with these behaviors. Iodine nutrition status amongst neonates can be assessed by estimating thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). According to WHO, if more than 3 % of the neonates have TSH levels of 5 mlU/l and more in a population, it indicates presence of iodine deficiency (ID). Iodine deficiency is an endemic health problem in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh (HP) state. ID leads to mental retardation, deaf mutism, squint, dwarfism, spastic diplegia, neurological defects and congenital anomalies. The aim is to determine iodine nutrition status of neonates of Solan district. In Solan district, six hospitals/community health centers providing obstetric services and conducting more than 100 deliveries per annum were identified and enlisted. Two hospitals were selected keeping in view of operational feasibility. A total of 683 umbilical cord blood samples of neonates were collected on filter paper and analyzed for TSH. It was found that 63.2 % of the neonates had TSH levels of more than 5 mlU/l indicating iodine deficiency in the Solan district. Iodine deficiency was a public health problem in Solan district, HP. The objective of this study was to analyze temporal changes in social needs (SN), comparing those who received routine annual in-person care to those receiving SN screenings through a combination of tele-social care and in-person care biannually. Our prospective cohort study used a convenience sample of patients from primary care practices. Baseline data were collected from April 2019 to March 2020. The intervention group (n = 336) received SN screening and referral telephone outreach from June 2020 to August 2021. The control group (n = 2890) was screened, in person, during routine visits at baseline and summer 2021. We used a repeated-measures logistic regression with general estimating equations to assess incremental change in individual SN for the intervention group. Food, housing, legal and benefit needs increased and peaked at the beginning of the pandemic and decreased after interventions (P < 0.001). There was a 32% decrease in the odds of food insecurity for those in the intervention group compared to the control group (adjusted OR 0.668, 95% confidence interval 0.444–1.004, P = 0.052), and a 75% decrease in the odds of housing insecurity (adjusted OR 0.247, 95% confidence interval 0.150–0.505, P < 0.001). During COVID-19, there was an increase in SN followed by a decrease after interventions were offered. Occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2 varies by profession, but "essential workers" are often considered in aggregate in COVID-19 models. This aggregation complicates efforts to understand risks to specific types of workers or industries and target interventions, specifically towards non-healthcare workers. We used census tract-resolution American Community Survey data to develop novel essential worker categories among the occupations designated as COVID-19 Essential Services in Massachusetts. Census tract-resolution COVID-19 cases and deaths were provided by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. We evaluated the association between essential worker categories and cases and deaths over two phases of the pandemic from March 2020 to February 2021 using adjusted mixed-effects negative binomial regression, controlling for other sociodemographic risk factors. We observed elevated COVID-19 case incidence in census tracts in the highest tertile of workers in construction/transportation/buildings maintenance (Phase 1: IRR 1.32 [95% CI 1.22, 1.42]; Phase 2: IRR: 1.19 [1.13, 1.25]), production (Phase 1: IRR: 1.23 [1.15, 1.33]; Phase 2: 1.18 [1.12, 1.24]), and public-facing sales and services occupations (Phase 1: IRR: 1.14 [1.07, 1.21]; Phase 2: IRR: 1.10 [1.06, 1.15]). We found reduced case incidence associated with greater percentage of essential workers able to work from home (Phase 1: IRR: 0.85 [0.78, 0.94]; Phase 2: IRR: 0.83 [0.77, 0.88]). Similar trends exist in the associations between essential worker categories and deaths, though attenuated. Estimating industry-specific risk for essential workers is important in targeting interventions for COVID-19 and other diseases and our categories provide a reproducible and straightforward way to support such efforts. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common type of cancer among both males and females in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Although largely preventable through screening, early detection and removal of polyps, screening rates are considered sub-optimal. Perceived barriers to screening have been reported to influence screening rates. This paper examines variations in the extent to which uninsured patients identified barriers to CRC screening using colonoscopy based on race/ethnicity, educational attainment, age, gender, marital status and prior colonoscopy. Multivariate analyses showed that compared to Caucasians, African Americans had an increased likelihood of identifying lack of transportation as a barrier [odds ratio (OR) 2.68; 95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.35-5.32] while Hispanics were more likely to identify fear of finding cancer as a barrier (OR 2.09; 95 % CI 1.19-3.66). Compared to those with more than a high school education, there was increased likelihood of identifying lack of knowledge as a barrier among individuals with high school education (OR 3.51; 95 % CI 1.94-6.36) or less than a high school education (OR 2.16; 95 % CI 1.04-4.50). Our findings suggest that strategies aimed at increasing colonoscopy screening rates among underserved populations should take into consideration race/ethnicity, educational attainment, age, and prior colonoscopy experience when developing education and outreach plans to reduce barriers to colonoscopy. Food insecurity is steadily increasing in developed countries. Traditional interventions adopted to tackle food insecurity, like food banks, address the urgent need for food. By contrast, alternative interventions, such as community gardens and kitchens, are oriented towards social integration and the development of mutual aid networks. The objective of this paper is to examine whether the populations served by traditional and alternative interventions in food security differ according to measures of vulnerability. We studied newly registered participants to food security interventions. Participants were selected from a random sample of food security community organizations in a two-stage cluster sampling frame. The categorizing variable was participation in a community organization providing either traditional interventions or alternative interventions. Seven measures of vulnerability were used: food security; perceived health; civic participation; perceived social support of the primary network, social isolation, income and education. Regression multilevel models were used to assess associations. 711 participants in traditional interventions and 113 in alternative interventions were enrolled in the study. Between group differences were found with respect to food insecurity, health status perception, civic participation, education and income, but not with respect to social isolation or perceived social support from primary social network. Traditional and alternative food security interventions seem to reach different populations. Participants in traditional interventions were found to have less access to resources, compared to those in alternative interventions. This paper investigates the relationship between socio-economic status and emotional well-being of orphans in Mangaung, South Africa. Five hundred orphans aged 7-11 years participated in the cross-sectional study between 2009 and 2012. Data was collected by trained fieldworkers, who conducted face-to-face interviews and questionnaires with the orphans, their teachers and caregivers, and the heads of the households where the orphans resided. The caregivers, children and teachers all completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in order to measure the orphans' mental health, while heads of household provided information about socio-economic indicators. STATA version 12 was used to perform multivariate data analyses to identify socio-economic factors associated with the mental health of orphans. Food security, access to medical services and a male caregiver were factors associated with better emotional well-being of orphans, whereas other variables such as household asset index and monthly household expenditure were not linked with the orphans' mental health. Two of the three variables (food security and access to medical services) associated with better emotional well-being of orphans are also government interventions to assist orphans. Drowning, a largely preventable problem, continues to be a serious issue worldwide, with young men particularly at risk. Alcohol and drugs are often present among young males and, particularly for males aged 18-34 years, alcohol is considered to be a significant risk factor for drowning. The current study aimed to understand the motivations guiding the intentions of young Australian men to engage in drinking and swimming, a behaviour not yet examined systematically. A cross-sectional correlational design was adopted to investigate the ability of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and additional variables to predict males' intentions to drink and swim. Males ( N = 211) aged 18-34 years ( Mage = 23.93, SD = 4.01) completed a survey either on-line or paper-based. The survey assessed the TPB constructs of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control (PBC); and additional variables of group norms, anticipated regret, objective (i.e. swimming ability) and perceived (i.e. perceived severity and perceived susceptibility) risk perceptions, and past behaviour. Support was found for the TPB constructs of attitude and subjective norm, but not PBC, as well as the additional constructs of group norm, anticipated regret, objective risk, and past behaviour in predicting males' intentions to drink and swim; explaining an overall 76 % of variance. Knowledge gained from this study will help to inform resultant interventions designed to discourage alcohol use in, on, or around water and, thus, prevent drownings in this at risk group. This paper has two objectives. First, we examine the Black-White disparity in the U.S. infant mortality rate (IMR) between 1995 and 2009, and explore the influence of socioeconomic characteristics (e.g., marital status, education, and prenatal care) on this racial gap. Second, we calculate projected IMRs and compare these results to the objectives of the Healthy People 2020 program. Descriptive statistics were calculated and linear regression models were conducted using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's linked birth and infant death files. Between 1995 and 2009, the IMR declined by 11.9 % for White mothers and 15.3 % for Black mothers. Among unmarried mothers, there was a 19.6 % decline for Whites and a 15.2 % reduction for Blacks. In comparison, among married mothers, there was a 19.3 % decline for Whites and an 18.1 % reduction for Blacks. For both Blacks and Whites, the largest percent declines occurred among women with the lowest and highest levels of education. For both racial groups, those with no prenatal care had the highest IMRs. Despite these significant declines, educated White women are the only group predicted to reach the Healthy People 2020 objective of an IMR lower than 6.0 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. The predicted IMR for highly educated Black women in 2020 is 10.6, and the projected rates for Black mothers with low education levels are even higher. Although the IMR has declined since 1995, the racial disparity between Blacks and Whites will most likely persist through 2020. Whereas educated White mothers are projected to meet the Healthy People 2020 IMR goal, other groups will fall short. The racial disparity persists even when mothers are grouped by marital status, educational attainment, and access to care. Many veterans receive care from both the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and the non-VHA health system, or dual care. Non-federal physicians practicing in Nebraska were surveyed to examine their perspectives on the organization and delivery of dual care provided to veterans. A paper-based survey was mailed to all 1,287 non-federal primary care physicians (PCPs) and a purposive sample of 765 specialist physicians practising in Nebraska. Rural physicians are more likely to incorporate care coordination practices in their clinical practice, compared to urban physicians. More rural physicians report difficulties in patient transfers, and referrals to the VHA, in prescribing for veteran patients, and in contacting a VHA provider in an emergent situation regarding their veteran patient. More PCPs also report difficulties in referrals to the VHA. However, more rural and primary care physicians follow up with their veteran patients post referral to the VHA. There was agreement among the physicians that the current dual care system needed improvements to provide timely, efficient, coordinated and high quality care to veterans. The specific areas identified for improvement were coordination of care, information sharing, medication management, streamlining of patient transfers, reimbursement for care provided outside the VA, and better delineation and clarity of the boundaries of each system and roles and responsibilities of VA and non-VA providers in the care of veterans. Health and social disparities are widespread among men who have sex with men (MSM). Although literature indicates that Black MSM (BMSM) are no more likely than other MSM to report sexual risk behaviors, such as unprotected anal intercourse, studies have reported that buying and trading sex appear to be important risk factors for BMSM. Substance use generally is not significantly greater among BMSM than other MSM, studies have found that BMSM report more powder and crack cocaine use than other MSM. The lack of adequate coping skills and social support for BMSM has also been documented. This paper examines differences in substance use, sexual risk behaviors and social support among Black and non-black MSM, in a sample of 515 men participating in a randomized intervention trial. BMSM reported higher rates of substance dependence (72.2 vs. 59.5 %, P = .015) and buying sex (49.1 vs. 17.4 %, P < .000) than non-Black MSM. BMSM also reported lower levels of social support than other MSM on all measures included in the study; e.g., getting help and emotional support from others (38.0 vs. 52.8 %, P < .006). Mediation analyses showed that BMSM's higher rates of substance dependence and buying sex are partially mediated by lower levels of social support. Our data appear to show that lack of social support is an important influence on risk behaviors among BMSM. Qualitative data also supported these findings. We conducted a 2-year pilot randomized controlled trial (N = 105) in a high HIV-prevalence area in rural western Kenya to test whether providing young orphan adolescents with uniforms, school fees, and community visitors improves school retention and reduces HIV risk factors. The trial was a community intervention, limited to one community. In this paper, we examined intervention implementation and its association with outcomes using longitudinal data. We used both quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate the community-based model for orphan HIV prevention, with recommendations for future studies. Despite promising effects after 1 year, GEE analyses showed null effects after 2 years. Volunteer community visitors, a key element of the intervention, showed little of the expected effect although qualitative reports documented active assistance to prevent orphans' school absence. For future research, we recommend capturing the transition to high school, a larger sample size, and biomarker data to add strength to the research design. We also recommend a school-based intervention approach to improve implementation and reduce infrastructure costs. Finally, we recommend evaluating nurses as agents for improving school attendance and preventing dropout because of their unique ability to address critical biopsychosocial problems. This study explored the economic costs and response rate of mail and web-based surveys with practicing dentists. A random sample of 6,000 practicing dentists was randomly assigned into three groups of 2,000: choice (mail or web-based), postal mail, or web-based. The Florida Tobacco Control Survey 2009, which is composed of 28 questions (including subject demographic questions), served as the survey instrument. A total of 1,232 surveys were returned by the three different groups (21% overall response rate). Response rates were best for the mail (26%) with the worst response rate coming from the Web group (11%). The recent approval of long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) as PrEP for HIV prevention could be an attractive alternative for MSM, particularly among those who face barriers to adherence using the oral pill. This study reports on the awareness of long-acting injectable PrEP (LAI-PrEP) and factors associated with interest in LAI-PrEP use among a nationwide sample of MSM in Malaysia. An online cross-sectional survey was conducted between August and September 2021 to explore perspectives on PrEP modalities among Malaysian MSM (N = 870). Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants using ads on two platforms hornet and facebook. While only 9.1% of the study participants were aware of LAI-PrEP, the majority had heard of oral PrEP (80.9%). After giving a description of it, a large majority (86.6%) expressed interest in using it if made accessible. Those who had a prior history of HIV testing (aOR = 1.9; 95% CI = 1.2–3.2) were more likely to use LAI-PrEP. Interestingly, despite the concerns related to potential high cost (aOR = 3.4; 95% CI = 2.1–5.5) and long-term side effects (aOR = 1.9; 95% CI = 1.2–3.1), the majority of the participants were interested in using LAI-PrEP. Those who were afraid of (or disliked) syringes were less interested in using it (aOR = 0.2; 95% CI; 0.1–0.4). In the recent context that LAI-PrEP was shown to be safe and effective at preventing HIV, our results indicate its potential relevance as an additional PrEP option that could accelerate the uptake and scale-up of PrEP. However, it is crucial to conduct future research urgently to improve the understanding of strategies that could enhance the accessibility, acceptability, and affordability of LAI-PrEP for MSM in low- and middle-income countries, including Malaysia. Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting around 300 million people worldwide. In the United States, Black individuals have a higher burden of asthma than White individuals. The goal of this study was to differentiate the burden of asthma between US-born and foreign-born Black residents of New York City (NYC). We use a multivariable Cox proportional hazard model with a robust variance estimate. The results indicate that foreign-born Black NYC residents have a significantly lower asthma prevalence than US-born (PR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.21–0.76). Additionally, those 65 years and older have a lower prevalence of asthma compared to those 18–34 years old. This study shows that asthma prevalence is higher amongst US-born Black NYC residents than foreign-born, which may indicate that the healthcare needs of the foreign-born may be different from that of the native-born. Early sexual activity has been associated with unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. In recent decades, the prevalence of early sexual activity and social media use has increased. However, the relationship between these variables has been little studied. Consequently, we examined the relationships of some factors present in the family and personal environment with early sexual activity in adolescents who use and do not use the WhatsApp and Facebook platforms. Through a cross-sectional study, data from 1328 adolescents aged 13 to 19 years were analyzed. Data collection was carried out using a self-administered questionnaire. Of the total participants, 35.7% reported early sexual activity, and 37.7% reported using social networks such as WhatsApp and Facebook. The mean age of onset of sexual activity was 15.59 ± 1.56 years. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed significant associations of not studying (adjusted OR 4.70; CI 95% 1.31–16.78), consuming alcohol (adjusted OR 3.71; CI 95% 2.44–5.65) and having parents who consumed alcoholic beverages in the home (adjusted OR 1.48; 95% CI 1.03–2.12) with ESA. In the family and personal environment, some factors favored early sexual activity in young people who used the WhatsApp and Facebook applications. This information should be used by authorities in the health and education sectors to strengthen preventive programs targeting health risk habits and behaviors in adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an emerging global health problem in Nepal. However, there is still a paucity of information on its burden and its risk factors among service users from a hospital based setting. This is a cross sectional study conducted among the service users of diabetes clinic in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital of Nepal. A sample size of 154 was selected systematically from the patient registration from 30th July to 16th August, 2013. Of the 154 participants, 42.85 % had T2DM. Higher mean body mass index (26.50 ± 5.05 kg/m) and waist circumference (92.47 ± 11.30 cm) was found among the individuals with T2DM and, compared to those without diabetes (Body mass index 25.13 ± 4.28 kg/m: waist circumference 88.91 ± 12.30 cm) (P = 0.013). In further analysis, the sedentary occupation (aOR 3.088; 95 % CI 1.427-6.682), measure of high waist circumference (aOR 2.758; 95 % CI 1.238-6.265) individuals from lower socioeconomic status (aOR 3.989; 95 % CI 1.636-9.729) right knowledge on symptoms of diabetes (aOR 3.670; 95 % CI 1.571-8.577) and right knowledge on prevention of diabetes (aOR 3.397; 95 % CI 1.377-8.383) were significantly associated with T2DM status. The current findings suggest that health programs targeting T2DM should focus increasing awareness on harmful health effects of sedentary occupation, symptoms of T2DM and its prevention among the urban population. Many patients have a rudimentary knowledge of their body's anatomy and functioning. In a clinical setting, deficits in patient understanding can lead to miscommunication affecting patient care and satisfaction. Hence, this study aims to estimate a baseline of patient knowledge regarding pelvic anatomy and to assess their educational preferences in learning about related topics. For this cross-sectional study, we developed a 24-item assessment with questions related to pelvic anatomy, health, and function. The questionnaire was validated using feedback from anonymous community focus groups, and then distributed to English-speaking female patients at the Women's Clinic of LAC + USC Medical Center (Los Angeles). The participant performance as a percentage-correct score on the anatomy assessment constituted our primary outcome. As secondary outcomes, educational preferences were inquired. Statistical analysis was conducted using two-sample t tests. The majority of our total sample of 269 were Hispanic (65.4 %) with a mean age of 35.3 years. We documented deficits in patient knowledge with a mean score of 66.1 % correct on anatomy assessment. Statistically significant lower scores were associated with less education and with Hispanic/Latino origin. Additionally, we found that while physicians have played a role in health education, women prefer to receive more education from their providers in the future. The deficits we identified indicate the pressing need to improve the pelvic health literacy of our patients. We aimed to determine the relationship between neighborhood characteristics (walkability, cohesion/safety) and recommended activity levels among community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults. Subjective and objective data on 394 individuals aged ≥50 years were used to assess the likelihood of walking ≥150 min/week. Environmental factors associated with a greater likelihood of any walking ≥150 min/week included living in a neighborhood with high perception of cohesion/safety versus low, living in walkable areas versus car-dependent, and living in an area with a low-moderate median income versus the lowest. Middle-aged and older adults were more likely to walk ≥150 min/week in a walkable, perceived safe/cohesive neighborhood. Identifying neighborhood factors associated with promoting walking among this population can enable stakeholders (e.g., researchers, planners, and policy makers) to direct interventions focusing on the built environment. Access to health care depends on multiple sociodemographic factors such as race/ethnicity, marital status, education, income, and insurance status. However, a paucity of research has examined access to healthcare disparities as they uniquely affect women, specifically women of color. National data were analyzed from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) utilizing an 11-year sample (2005–2015) of women ages 18–74 (N = 128,355). More recent data were not included due to changes in how sampling was conducted after 2015. Predictor variables included race/ethnicity cross-classified with marital status, education, income, or insurance status, controlling for age. A dichotomous outcome variable called "any barriers to healthcare" was created based on usual source of care, delayed medical care, delayed dental care and delayed prescription care. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify associations with barriers to care. The foundation of this methodology is intersectionality and how it impacts access to care for women across social identities. Hispanic women (OR 1.08, 95% CI 1.02–1.14) had higher odds of having a barrier to care compared to White women. However, Black women (OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.87–0.97) had lower odds of having a barrier to care compared to White women. Race/ethnicity also significantly moderated the relationship between socioeconomic variables (marital status, income, education and insurance status) and having a barrier to care. Student-faculty collaborative clinics, like the Crimson Care Collaborative (CCC), provide primary care access to underserved communities. Affiliated with a community health center, CCC-Chelsea serves a largely immigrant and refugee population. This study aimed to analyze patients' reported ED use before and after they presented to CCC-Chelsea and whether types of insurance affect ED use. We prospectively surveyed 229 patients presenting to CCC-Chelsea between 2013 and 2019. Patients who presented for two or more visits at least one year apart were included in the study. A two-sided Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare reported ED use before and after presenting to CCC-Chelsea, and a Kruskal–Wallis test analyzed the association between ED use and insurance status. Most patients (77.7%) presenting to CCC-Chelsea identified as Hispanic, 70.9% were male, 50.6% of patients reported an income of less than $15,000 yearly, and 30.4% had an income between $15,000–$30,000. Most patients (51.9%) did not specify the type of insurance used, followed by public insurance (36.7%), with the remaining having private or no insurance. Results from our survey showed that patients who returned to CCC-Chelsea reported a decrease in the average number of yearly ED visits after attending CCC-Chelsea (pre-CCC 1.544, post-CCC 0.696, p < 0.001 at the 95% CI). There was no difference in reported average number of ED visits yearly and insurance type (p = 0.579). Patients' reported ED utilization after accessing care at CCC-Chelsea decreased. Leishmaniasis is a major health problem caused by a protozoan of the genus Leishmania, most commonly transmitted by infected female sand flies. Intersectoral collaboration is essential for the implementation of integrated vector management control with community participation. The present study aims to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practices of the population toward leishmaniasis in central Morocco. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted using an administered questionnaire assisted by health professionals, on 750 people in the Marrakech Safi, endemic region of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Of those, 702 agreed to be recruited for our study, of which 63,5% were women, 48,1% were aged between 18 and 40 years, and more than half of the participants (60%) were from rural areas. Overall, the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAPs) for leishmaniasis are too poor for more than 85% of the population in the study area. Basic knowledge and perceptions of leishmaniasis were good for 14,6% of respondents. While, 4,5% of the members had good knowledge of CL, only 0,7% had good level of knowledge about vesciral leishmaniasis (VL). Furthermore 3,7% of those polled have favorable attitudes and preventive practices. No association was found between knowledge and age, province or occupation. However, rural residents were four times more likely than urbain residents to have good basic knowledge (ORA = 4,74; CI95%: 1,04 -22,05). In addition, the female gender also has the chance to possess good basic knowledge and perceptions 3 times more than the men (ORA = 3,18; CI95%: 1,16 -8,69). Homelessness poses a direct threat to public health in the US as many individuals face debilitating health outcomes and barriers to adequate health care. Access to STI care for the homeless Medicaid population of USA has not been well-studied using administrative claims data. Our study aims to compare health services utilization, STI screening and diagnoses among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) vs. those who are non-PEH using ICD10 codes. We used 2019 MarketScan Medicaid claims data to analyze men and women aged 15–44 years with a diagnosis code for PEH (Z59.0), non-PEH (without Z59.0) and assessed their emergency department and outpatient visits and STI/HIV diagnoses and screening rates. We identified 5135 PEH men and 3571 PEH women among 1.3 million men and 2.1 million women in the 2019 US Medicaid database. PEH patients were more likely to have ED visits (94.80% vs 33.04%) and ≥ 20 outpatient clinic visits (60.29% vs 16.16%) than non-PEH patients in 2019. Higher diagnoses were observed for syphilis 1.57% (CI 1.32–1.86) vs 0.11% (CI 0.11–0.11), HIV 3.93% (CI 3.53–4.36) vs 0.41% (CI 0.41–0.42), chlamydia 1.94% (CI 1.66–2.25) vs 0.85% (CI 0.84–0.86) and gonorrhea 1.26% (CI 1.04–1.52) vs. 0.33% (CI 0.33–0.34) (p < 0.0001) among PEH compared to non-PEH. Among PEH, higher STI/HIV diagnoses rates indicate an increase in STI burden and suboptimal STI testing indicates an underutilization of STI services despite having a higher percentage of health care visits compared to non-PEH patients. Introduction: This study used 2016–2019 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data to estimate prevalence of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use around pregnancy, changes in ENDS use and cigarette smoking from before to during pregnancy, and trends in these behaviors over time. Methods: ENDS and cigarette use during the 3 months before and the last three months of pregnancy were measured. Weighted prevalence estimates and 95% confidence intervals were estimated for outcomes overall and ENDS use by maternal characteristic for 2016–2019; logistic regression tested for differences in ENDS use by maternal characteristic and for linear trends in ENDS and cigarette use before and during pregnancy. Analyses were completed in 2021. Results: In 2019, 4.3% (N = 98,050) of women used ENDS before and 1.3% (N = 28,811) used ENDS during pregnancy. Most exclusive ENDS users (82.2%) and exclusive cigarette smokers (55.0%) stopped use during pregnancy. Among dual users, 46.3% stopped use during pregnancy while 20.2% continued dual use and 24.9% smoked cigarettes exclusively. Few dual users (8.6%) and exclusive cigarette smokers (0.5%) reported using ENDS exclusively during pregnancy. From 2016–2019, exclusive ENDS use increased and exclusive cigarette smoking decreased both before and during pregnancy. Conclusions: ENDS use during pregnancy is low but increased since 2016. Less than one-half of dual ENDS and cigarettes users quit during pregnancy; few dual users or exclusive cigarette smokers switched to exclusive ENDS use during pregnancy. In this cross-sectional study, adverse events after the first and second dose of BNT162b2 mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech, Comirnaty) vaccine against coronavirus disease 2019 were investigated among employees of clinics in central Italy. A 42-items questionnaire was administrated to vaccine recipients. Adverse events were classified based on severity and occurrence as reported in the literature. A descriptive/univariate analysis using Chi-square or Fisher's Exact tests was performed. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to assess risk factors. 340 individuals (61.5% females; median age 49 years) participated. Adverse events were reported by 279 (82%) and 281 (82.6%) individuals as induced by the first and second dose, respectively. Mild reactions were mainly reported (80.9% and 80.3%), followed by moderate (11.8% and 37.1%) and severe (3.8% and 4.7%). Adverse events were identical to those already described as very common (81.8% and 80.6%), although vaccine-coincidental events not cited in the literature were reported by 6% and 15.6% following each dose. Age ≤ 55 years was a risk factor for any adverse event after each injection (ORs: 2.942 and 2.818), as well as female sex for those mild (ORs: 1.856 and 2.818) and common (ORs: 3.452 and 2.145). Findings were consistent with national reports as most of the adverse events were mild and associated with female sex and young age, while investigations are needed for reactions not described elsewhere. Data are useful to support the vaccine safety profile, also because largely targeted healthcare personnel more skilled than general population in self-diagnosis of health-related issues. Racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in COVID-19 burden have been widely reported. Using data from the state health departments of Alabama and Louisiana aggregated to residential Census tracts, we assessed the relationship between social vulnerability and COVID-19 testing rates, test positivity, and incidence. Data were cumulative for the period of February 27, 2020 to October 7, 2020. We estimated the association of the 2018 Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) overall score and theme scores with COVID-19 tests, test positivity, and cases using multivariable negative binomial regressions. We adjusted for rurality with 2010 Rural–Urban Commuting Area codes. Regional effects were modeled as fixed effects of counties/parishes and state health department regions. The analytical sample included 1160 Alabama and 1105 Louisiana Census tracts. In both states, overall social vulnerability and vulnerability themes were significantly associated with increased COVID-19 case rates (RR 1.57, 95% CI 1.45–1.70 for Alabama; RR 1.36, 95% CI 1.26–1.46 for Louisiana). There was increased COVID-19 testing with higher overall vulnerability in Louisiana (RR 1.26, 95% CI 1.14–1.38), but not in Alabama (RR 0.95, 95% CI 0.89–1.02). Consequently, test positivity in Alabama was significantly associated with social vulnerability (RR 1.66, 95% CI 1.57–1.75), whereas no such relationship was observed in Louisiana (RR 1.05, 95% CI 0.98–1.12). Social vulnerability is a risk factor for COVID-19 infection, particularly among racial/ethnic minorities and those in disadvantaged housing conditions without transportation. Vaccines are critical for curtailing the COVID-19 pandemic and may represent an important tool for return to "normalcy" on college campuses in the Fall of 2021. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent of vaccination coverage and intention to vaccinate among college students. College students (N = 457) enrolled in the Spring 2021 semester at a university in New Jersey completed a cross-sectional survey. The survey collected information on demographics, COVID-19 and vaccination history, knowledge levels and sources of COVID-19 vaccine information, and vaccine attitudes. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with vaccination, and the intention to vaccinate among non-vaccinated students. Results indicate that 23% (n = 105) of participants reported being vaccinated already. Among non-vaccinated students, 52.8% indicated their intention to receive the vaccine when it is made available to college students. Students who were health care workers (adjusted odds ratio, aOR = 4.17, p < 0.001), had a family member who had received a COVID-19 vaccine (aOR = 5.03, p < 0.001), exhibited greater positive attitudes regarding vaccination (aOR = 1.12, p < 0.001), and received a seasonal flu vaccine (aOR = 1.97, p < 0.05) were more likely to have received the COVID-19 vaccine. Among non-vaccinated students, those who discussed COVID-19 vaccine information with others (aOR = 5.38, p < 0.001), and exhibited more overall positive attitudes regarding vaccination (aOR = 2.69, p < 0.001), were more likely to indicate their willingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Cardiovascular risk is common among resettled refugees from Southeast Asia, but the association with refugee status is unclear. This study investigated the lipid levels of Burmese refugees as compared to the general population of Burma. This observational study included adult refugees from Burma undergoing domestic medical examination at a clinic in Minnesota (n = 127). The cholesterol levels of the refugee cohort were compared to a survey of Burmese residents sampled by the World Health Organization (WHO). The primary variable of interest, mean LDL, was 118.9 mg/dL in the refugee cohort. Adjusting for sex and age-group, this was 18.5 mg/dL higher than the WHO cohort (95% CI 10.0–27.1 mg/dL, p < 0.001). This study confirmed previous studies showing elevated lipid levels among Asian refugees. We examined factors associated with and reasons for perceived susceptibility to COVID-19 among urban and rural adults in Alabama. We surveyed 575 eligible participants' engagement in preventive behaviors, concern about COVID-19 in their communities, perceived susceptibility to the virus, and reasons for susceptibility across three response options (Yes, No, and Don't Know/Not Sure). Bivariate analyses compared characteristics by level of perceived susceptibility to COVID-19. A multinomial logistic regression model evaluated the association of demographics, health insurance coverage, and chronic illness status with perceived susceptibility. Participants' race, gender, and educational attainment were significantly associated with perceived susceptibility to COVID-19. African Americans and males had higher odds of responding 'No', compared to 'Yes' and 'Don't Know/Not Sure' than Whites and females. Participants with a high school education and lower had higher odds of responding 'Don't Know/Not Sure' versus 'Yes' compared to those with college or higher education. Those unconcerned about COVID-19 in their community had higher odds of responding 'No' (OR = 2.51, CI 1.35–4.68) and 'Don't Know/Not Sure' (OR = 2.51, CI 1.26–4.99) versus 'Yes', as compared to those who were concerned. Possibility of exposure at work was the most frequent reasons for perceiving themselves susceptible to COVID-19, engagement in recommended preventive measures was the most frequent reason among respondents who indicated 'No', and uncertainty/perception that everyone is at risk was the most frequent reason among the ones who indicated 'Don't Know/Not Sure'. Taxi and for-hire vehicle (FHV) drivers are a largely immigrant, low-income occupational group at increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Poor dental health is a CVD risk factor, and dental care access is an unexamined taxi/FHV driver CVD risk factor. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 422 taxi/FHV drivers (2016–2017) to identify predictors of access to dental health care among drivers. One-third (n = 128, 30.3%) reported needing dental care/tests/treatment within the past six months, and nearly one-half (n = 61, 48%) were delayed/unable to obtain care. Only 57.6% (n = 241) had past-year dental cleanings. Not having enough money to cover household expenses was a significant predictor of being delayed/unable to obtain needed dental care/tests/treatment in the prior six months (0.5 OR; 95% CI, 0.28–0.89; p <.05). Lack of dental insurance coverage (2.72 OR; 95% CI, 1.60–4.63; p <.001) or lack of primary care provider (2.72 OR; 95% CI, 1.60–4.63; p <.001) were associated with lack of past-year dental cleaning. Seventeen percent of drivers with Medicaid were unaware of their dental coverage, which was associated with both inability to access needed dental care/tests/treatment in the past 6 months (p =.026) and no past-year dental cleaning (p <.001). Limited understanding of dental coverage was associated with both an inability to access needed dental care/tests/treatment in the past 6 months (p =.028) and lack of past-year dental cleaning (p =.014). Background: Compared to other racial/ethnic groups, U.S. Vietnamese have higher Hepatitis B infection prevalence, which is a major liver cancer risk factor. Increased testing could reduce this disparity. It is critical to understand subgroups of U.S. Vietnamese least likely to have been tested for Hepatitis B and design appropriate interventions. We examined healthcare- and acculturation-related factors influencing Hepatitis B testing among U.S. Vietnamese. Methods: Survey data of 100 U.S. Vietnamese attending health fairs/programs hosted by community-based organizations (2017–2018) were analyzed. Healthcare-related predictors included insurance and past 2-year checkup. Acculturation-related predictors included Vancouver Acculturation Index, percentage of lifetime in the U.S., and Vietnamese and English fluency. We conducted a multiple logistic regression controlling for age, sex, education, and household income. Results: The sample was an average 37.5 years old and 61.6% female. Insurance coverage was reported by 83.0%. Average percentage of lifetime in the U.S. was 56.8%. Seventy percent reported having received Hepatitis B testing. Hepatitis B testing was associated with health insurance (aOR = 2.61, 95% CI = [1.05–6.47], p =.04) but not any acculturation-related predictors Conclusion: Improving insurance coverage and options can be a strategy to increase Hepatitis B testing among U.S. Vietnamese. More education regarding Hepatitis B (e.g., via community-based, culturally-appropriate, lay health worker-led programs) is needed to ensure that individuals are aware of their testing status and pursue appropriate healthcare decisions. Care-delays can further exacerbate racial and ethnic health disparities in novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related complications. The purpose of our study was to describe and evaluate a Patient Engagement Messaging campaign (PEM campaign) promoting health care seeking behaviors among community and rural clinic patients in North Carolina. Text and voice messages were delivered over 3-weeks. Messages encouraged patients to call a regional operation call center (ROC) line for information related to health care appointments and testing. A cross-sectional evaluation was conducted on the total population (n = 48,063) and a sample without recent health care contact (n = 29,214). Among the sample, logistic regression was used to model determinants of calls to the ROC-line and associations between calling the ROC-line and health care seeking behaviors (scheduling any health care appointment or receiving a COVID-19 test). 69.9% of text messages and 89% of voice messages were delivered. Overall, 95.4% of the total population received at least 1 message. Successful delivery was lower among Black patients and higher among patients with moderate health-risk comorbidities. Among the sample, 7.4% called the ROC-line, with higher odds of calling among minority patients (vs. White) and among Medicaid and uninsured (vs. private insurance). Calling the ROC-line was associated with higher odds of scheduling any health care appointment (OR: 4.14; 95% CI 2.93–5.80) and receiving a COVID-19 test (OR: 2.39; 95% CI 1.64–3.39). In the United States, the growing population of older adults with limited English language proficiency (LEP) faces profound health care disparities. Previous research on vaccination of older adults has been based on self-reported data, without clinical verification. We compared pneumococcal vaccination rates between a patient group with LEP and a group of English speakers in an older community-dwelling population. A population-nested matched cohort of participants age 65 years and older was identified in Minnesota. Patients with LEP were identified through an electronic alert within the electronic health record, designed to determine the need for an interpreter. Patients were matched 1 to 1 for age, sex, and Charlson comorbidity index. We used conditional logistic regression for the final analysis. In total, 24,052 patients were identified as older patients (mean [SD] age, 74 [7] years). Of them, 617 patients (2.6%) had LEP. The most common primary languages were Somali (24%), Vietnamese (15%), and Spanish (13%). We found lower rates of vaccination with 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) in the LEP group compared with English speakers [62% vs 77%; odds ratio (OR) (95% CI) 2.07 (1.61–2.66); P < 0.001]. Results were similar for 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) [60% vs 75%; OR (95% CI) 1.97 91.54–2.51); P < 0.001]. These data are suggestive that older adults who required a language interpreter during health care encounters were less likely to be vaccinated with PCV13 and PPSV23 than older adults who did not require an interpreter. Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of injury related deaths. Urban areas accommodate multiple road users and pedestrians account for a larger share of traffic fatalities. Speed reduction has been one component of New York City's multidisciplinary approach to reduce traffic fatalities—Vision Zero. Data from the New York City (NYC) Community Health Survey 2015–2016 were used to document population-based estimates of self-reported speeding (defined as driving ten miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit in the past 30 days) among NYC adult drivers collected soon after the adoption of Vision Zero in 2014. Self-reported speeding is common, with nearly two-thirds (63%) of adult drivers indicating they ever sped and 13% often speeding. In adjusted multivariable models, often speeding was more common among younger drivers vs. older drivers (adjusted prevalence ratio: 2.77; 95%CI 1.93–3.98), males vs. females (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.59; 95%CI 1.35–1.87), wealthier drivers vs. poorer drivers (adjusted prevalence ratio: 1.37; 95%CI 1.10–1.70) and those reporting worse perceived social cohesion vs. better perceived social cohesion (adjusted prevalence ratio 1.51; 95%CI 1.09–2.10). Since 2006, New York City (NYC) has attempted to reduce sugary drink consumption through several population-based initiatives, media campaigns and policy proposals. We estimated trends in the relative market share of sugary drinks and other beverage categories in NYC, using over 5 years of weekly, point-of-sale data from a retailer sample. We used an interrupted time series approach to assess whether changes in NYC beverage purchasing patterns occurred following the announcement of a proposed portion cap rule for consumer purchases of sugary drinks. Overall, market share of sugary drinks declined in NYC between 2010 and 2015. While the proportion of beverage volume sold that was sugary drinks was stable prior to the May 2012 portion cap rule announcement, decreases of 1.25% per year were observed in the period following the announcement compared to the period before (95% confidence interval (CI) − 1.60, − 0.90). Water/seltzer market share was increasing prior to the announcement and increased by an additional 1.03% per year in the post-announcement period (95% CI 0.48, 1.57). City-led efforts to increase public awareness about sugary drink-associated health risks in NYC may have led to reductions in consumer purchases of these beverages. Electronic nicotine delivery systems were promoted publically as a healthier replacement for conventional cigarettes. Knowledge and beliefs of the public can drive their behaviours to adapt or reject the new habit. No previous research was conducted in Jordan to assess electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) prevalence, and limited data are available on public opinions and orientation toward this new habit. To assess prevalence of, knowledge, attitude and beliefs about e-cigarettes, and examine factors associated with plans of quitting or initiating e-cigarettes among adults in Jordan. A large cross-sectional face-to-face survey on a random sample of adult population aged ≥ 18 years was conducted over two months to include 1820 adults in Jordan. A representative sample was collected using proportionate random sampling technique, which enabled us to geographically categorise the study population. Reliability and validity measures were taken to ensure a comprehensive and appropriate study tool. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS®) version 24 was used to conduct descriptive analysis, logistic regression, and Rao–Scott chi-square. Findings were considered statistically significant at p value < 0.05 (with a confidence limit at 95%). Of 2164 adults approached, 1820 completed the questionnaire (84.1% response rate). The prevalence of current e-cigarette smokers and dual smokers were 11.7% and 4.0%, respectively. Quitting conventional smoking (38.8%) and enjoying the flavour (32.5%) were the most common reasons to start vaping. Friends were the major source of information about e-cigarettes. There was evidence that adults aged 45–59 years were less likely to be dual smokers (OR 0.51; 95%CI 0.29–0.66; p = 0.03). Poor knowledge about the content (23.7%) and types of e-cigarettes (14.5%) was reported. Plans to reduce or quit e-cigarettes were significantly associated with three factors: smokers' knowledge about its content, social impression, smokers' satisfaction with e-cigarettes. Social impression was also associated with plans of initiating e-cigarettes. Most participants thought vaping cannot be harmful to children and pregnant women (73.1%) and cannot be addictive (58.2%). Electronic cigarettes were considered helpful in smoking cessation by 69.1% of participants. The proportions of adults who were currently electronic cigarette and dual smokers were 11.7% and 4.0%, respectively. People living with HIV (PLWH) who use drugs experience worse health outcomes than their non-using counterparts. Little is known about how often they seek dental care and the factors that influence their utilization. PLWH with substance use disorders who were inpatients at 11 urban hospitals (n = 801) participated in a National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network study to improve engagement in HIV outcomes. Dental care utilization at each time point during the study period (baseline, 6 months and/or 12 months) was assessed (n = 657). Univariate analysis and logistic regression were used to examine factors associated with dental care utilization. Over half (59.4%) reported not having received any dental care at any timepoint. Participants with less than high school education had lower odds of reporting dental care utilization than those with more than education (aOR = 0.60 [95% CI 0.37–0.99], p = 0.0382). Participants without health insurance also had lower odds of reporting dental care utilization than those with insurance (aOR = 0.50 [95% CI 0.331–0.76], p = 0.0012). Higher food insecurity was associated with having recent dental care utilization (OR = 1.03 [95% CI 1.00, 1.05], p = 0.0359). Additionally, those from Southern states were less likely to report dental care utilization (aOR = 0.55 [95% CI 0.38, 0.79], p = 0.0013). Having health insurance and education are key factors associated with use of dental care for PLWH with substance use disorders. Gonorrhea is a curable sexually transmitted infection that affects the health of people globally. Millions of new gonorrhea cases are reported every year in people aged 15 to 49 years. Particularly adolescents are vulnerable due to high sexual desire and unsafe sexual practices. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of gonorrhea and the associated knowledge, attitude and risky behaviors and preventive practice of high school students in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 410 students from grade 11 and 12 of Medhane-alem preparatory school using self-administered questionnaires. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 22.0 software. Chi-square test and odds ratio were done at 95% CI using significance level of p < 0.05. The prevalence of gonorrhea among the students was 5.4%. Only 40% of participants were knowledgeable on gonorrhea transmission and less than 50% of them had positive perception towards gonorrhea infected people. Over 55% of the students had no sexual history but the rest had previous sexual experience and were exposed, at least, to one risky behavior. Logistic regression analysis revealed that higher acceptable sexual practice was observed among students with good knowledge than students with poor knowledge (AOR = 2.12, 95% CI 1.42–3.18, p < 0.001). Overall, higher prevalence rate and low knowledge level was observed among the study group. Negative attitudes and unsafe sexual practices were reported by the students. This study examines racial and ethnic differences in self-rated health among rural residents and whether these differences can be explained by socio-demographic characteristics. We used data from the 2011–2017 National Health Interview Survey to assess differences in self-rated health by race and ethnicity among rural residents (living in non-metropolitan counties; n = 46,883). We used logistic regression analyses to estimate the odds of reporting fair/poor health after adjusting for individual socio-demographic characteristics. Non-Hispanic Black and American Indian rural residents reported worse self-rated health than their non-Hispanic White counterparts (25.8% and 20.8% reporting fair/poor health, respectively, vs. 14.8%; p < 0.001). After adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics, disparities remained for non-Hispanic Black rural residents (Adjusted Odds Ratio = 1.55; 95% CI 1.36, 1.76). This study suggests more attention is required to address inequities among rural people and to develop policies to address structural racism and improve the health of all rural residents. High social risk, as measured by the social determinants of health (SDH), may increase the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, this association has not been studied in rural communities. Using the Atahualpa Project cohort, we aimed to assess the association between SDH and SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity in community-dwelling older adults living in rural Ecuador. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were determined in 319 individuals aged ≥ 60 years that completed a validated field instrument to assess their social risk before the introduction of this novel pandemic. Multivariate models were fitted to assess the independent association between SDH—and each of their components—and SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity, after adjusting for relevant covariates. According to the Gijon scale, 102 (32%) individuals had a high social risk (≥ 10 points). A total of 141 (44%) individuals were seropositive to SARS-CoV-2. A fully-adjusted logistic regression model showed an independent) association between social risk and SARS-CoV-2 positivity (OR 1.15; 95% CI 1.04–1.27; p = 0.008). For every unit of the total SDH score, the odds of SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity increased 15% (95% CI 3.7–27%). In addition, multivariate models showed that the individual component of SDH more strongly associated with SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity was housing, which suggested that lack of basic home facilities may increase the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Knowledge on the association between high social risk and SARS-CoV-2 infection is indispensable for the development of cost-effective preventive strategies for controlling modifiable factors that are in the path of SARS-CoV-2 infection among older adults living in underserved communities. We evaluated outcomes from a healthy eating/nutrition label interpretation intervention among Latinx immigrant mothers and their daughters, aged 9–12 years, in Alabama. Between May 2013–October 2017, this cluster randomized controlled trial assigned 299 mother-daughter dyads to either a healthy eating (intervention) or HPV vaccination (control) study arm. Participants attended four group sessions delivered in Spanish by Lay Health Educators covering portion sizes, healthy eating/cooking strategies, and nutrition label reading/interpretation. An individual session in participants' homes reviewed pantries and developed healthy eating plans. Identical interviewer-administered surveys were completed at baseline and 7-month follow-up by both study arms. Retention rate at follow-up was 93.4% in intervention arm (92.6% in control arm). Positive changes in healthy eating behaviors and proficiency in nutrition label interpretation were assessed. Adjusting for marital status, employment status, and health insurance coverage status, when compared to controls, mothers in the intervention arm had greater odds of increasing daily fruit and vegetable consumption (OR 3.66, 95% CI 2.14–6.27, p < 0.001), decreasing weekly fried food intake (OR 4.3, 95% CI 2.3–8.04, p < 0.001), decreasing daily sweetened beverages (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.22–3.52, p < 0.01), increasing frequency of reading nutrition labels (OR 12.58, 95% CI 6.81–23.22, p < 0.001), and correctly interpreting nutrition labels (OR 4.45, 95% CI 2.64–7.48, p < 0.001). Significant positive changes in targeted behaviors were not observed among daughters. Age-appropriate early childhood development is greatly influenced by exposure to various mediating and moderating factors. Developmental outcomes cannot be viewed in isolation, but by considering the interaction of the various risks and protective factors that influence early child development. A non-experimental, cross-sectional research design was employed. Data was collected in a low-income community in Gauteng, South Africa. Caregivers with children (n = 276) between the ages of 3 years and 6 years 11 months (mean 51.57 months; SD ± 12.4) whose children were in a preschool were invited to participate in the research study. Participants were divided into two groups, children with developmental delays and children without a developmental delay. The study sample included high risk, vulnerable preschool children, with a developmental delay prevalence of 80.1% (221/276). Families included were exposed to an average of five (SD ± 1.86) environmental and/or biological risks. According to a logistic regression model, three factors were significantly associated with increasing resilience amongst children with no developmental delay: living with both parents (p < 0.031, OR 4.5, 95% CI 1.2–17.2), caregivers having at least completed Grade 8 to 12 (p < 0.027, OR 11.9, 95% CI 1.4–10.5) and parents being married (p < 0.023, OR 5.1, 95% CI 1.3–20.9). Important protective factors in low-income communities like caregiver education, living with both parents and parental marriage can inform public health messaging and other population-based interventions to support early childhood development. It is important that women of reproductive age have access to and use routine health services to improve birth outcomes. While it is estimated that more than 5 million women in over 1000 counties across the United States live in maternity care deserts, to date there have been no published studies characterizing access and barriers to routine healthcare utilization in these areas. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was conducted in a rural county in northwest Ohio with 315 women ages 18–45 years. Health insurance coverage, usual source of care, length of time since routine check-up, and barriers to receipt of health services were assessed via a self-reported, anonymous survey. Over one-tenth (11.3%) of participants reported having no health insurance coverage. A total of 14.4% reported having no usual source of care and 22.8% reported not having a routine check-up in the past year. Just over one-half (53.0%) of participants reported having at least one barrier to accessing health care. In a logistic regression analysis, having a routine check-up in the past year was inversely associated with number of barriers (OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.56–0.95; p = 0.019); women who reported more barriers were less likely to report receipt of preventive care in the past year. The results of this study reveal that many reproductive-age women living in a maternity care desert face challenges in accessing health services. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is a primary risk factor for the development of melanoma. However, adults and adolescents often do not engage in preventive behaviors to reduce UVR exposure. Rural residents may be at higher risk for melanoma due to lower use of sun protection strategies, which increases their overall UVR exposure compared to those who live in urban areas. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in UVR exposure between rural and urban residents in a geographic area with high incidence of melanoma. Children (aged 8–17 years) and adults (≥ 18 years) from rural and urban areas of Utah were asked to wear a UVR monitoring device for 14 days. The sample included 97 children and 97 adults. Data was collected from June to October 2018. Non-parametric Mann–Whitney tests and quantile regression were used to compare UVR exposure levels between urban and rural participants, separately for adults and children. For adults, rural residence significantly increased total UVR dose (β: 24.6; 95% CI 3.75, 42.74) and the UVR dose during peak UVR hours among participants with the highest UVR doses (β: 16.3; 95% CI 17.4, 24.63). Rural children exhibited significantly higher UVR doses for peak UVR hours for the entire study period (β: 4.14; 95% CI 0.83, 7.46) and on weekdays (β: 0.39; 95% CI 0.05, 0.73). The findings from this study indicate that rural residents may receive higher levels of UVR exposure than urban residents, and that prevention efforts could be tailored to address these geographical differences. Objectives: The main aim of this study was to find the prevalence of mortality among hospitalized COVID-19 infected patients and associated risk factors for death. Methods: Three electronic databases including PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar were searched to identify relevant cohort studies of COVID-19 disease from January 1, 2020, to August 11, 2020. A random-effects model was used to calculate pooled prevalence rate (PR), risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for both effect measures. Cochrane chi-square test statistic Q, I 2 , and τ 2 tests were used to measure the presence of heterogeneity. Publication bias and sensitivity of the included studies were also tested. Results: In this meta-analysis, a total of 58 studies with 122,191 patients were analyzed. The pooled prevalence rate of mortality among the hospitalized COVID-19 patients was 18.88%, 95% CI (16.46–21.30), p < 0.001. Highest mortality was found in Europe [PR 26.85%, 95% CI (19.41–34.29), p < 0.001] followed by North America [PR 21.47%, 95% CI (16.27–26.68), p < 0.001] and Asia [PR 14.83%, 95% CI (12.46- 17.21), p < 0.001]. An significant association were found between mortality among COVID-19 infected patients and older age (> 65 years vs. < 65 years) [RR 3.59, 95% CI (1.87–6.90), p < 0.001], gender (male vs. female) [RR 1.63, 95% CI (1.43–1.87), p < 0.001], ICU admitted patients [RR 3.72, 95% CI (2.70–5.13), p < 0.001], obesity [RR 2.18, 95% CI (1.10–4.34), p < 0.05], hypertension [RR 2.08,95% CI (1.79–2.43) p < 0.001], diabetes [RR 1.87, 95% CI (1.23–2.84), p < 0.001], cardiovascular disease [RR 2.51, 95% CI (1.20–5.26), p < 0.05], and cancer [RR 2.31, 95% CI (1.80–2.97), p < 0.001]. In addition, significant association for high risk of mortality were also found for cerebrovascular disease, COPD, coronary heart disease, chronic renal disease, chronic liver disease, chronic lung disease and chronic kidney disease. Conclusion: This meta-analysis revealed that the mortality rate among COVID-19 patients was highest in the European region and older age, gender, ICU patients, patients with comorbidity had a high risk for case fatality. Young women are key stakeholders in efforts to increase human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination uptake. Community health workers who engage with young women can provide valuable information to inform intervention strategies to increase vaccine uptake. We aimed to determine HPV vaccination and sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates among urban women and to identify barriers to vaccination. A trained health educator collaborated with community-based organizations to host health education and STI testing sessions for women in Chicago, Illinois. Forty-nine sessions took place at 15 sites over two years. Each attendee met with the educator about sexual health and HPV vaccination, and completed a health survey. We used contingency tables and logistic regression to determine factors associated with HPV vaccination using the cross-sectional survey data. Of the 292 women who answered questions about history of HPV vaccination, the average age was 17 (SD 2.3) years old, 63% (n = 184) were African American, and 33% (n = 98) Hispanic. Only 13.4% (n = 39) previously received the vaccine, and 6.2% (n = 18) received two to three doses. After adjustment, prior HIV testing was associated with 4.6 times higher odds (95% CI 1.71, 12.53, p = 0.002) of being vaccinated compared to women without prior testing. Our study provides evidence that young African American and Hispanic women living in Chicago may have low HPV vaccination rates. Women who received prior STI testing (i.e., sought healthcare) were more likely to be vaccinated relative to their peers who did not, indicating that racial/ethnic or socioeconomic disparities may inhibit utilization of preventative services.
