SERS measurements for monitoring bactericides in dairy products are highly desired for food safety problems. However, the complicated preparation process of SERS substrates greatly impedes the promotion of SERS. Here, we propose acoustofluidic one-step synthesis of Ag nanoparticles on paper substrates for SERS detection. Our method is economical, fast, simple, and eco-friendly. We adopted laser cutting to cut out appropriate paper shapes, and aldehydes were simultaneously produced at the cutting edge in the pyrolysis of cellulose by laser which were leveraged as the reducing reagent. In the synthesis, only 5 μL of Ag precursor was added to complete the reaction, and no reducing agent was used. Our recently developed acoustofluidic device was employed to intensely mix Ag + ions and aldehydes and spread the reduced Ag nanoparticles over the substrate. The SERS substrate was fabricated in 1 step and 3 min. The standard R6G solution measurement demonstrated the excellent signal and prominent uniformity of the fabricated SERS substrates. SERS detection of the safe concentration of three bactericides, including tetracycline hydrochloride, thiabendazole, and malachite green, from food samples can be achieved using fabricated substrates. We take the least cost, time, reagents, and steps to fabricate the SERS substrate with satisfying performance. Hypothesis: Strongly degraded cellulosic artworks usually need deacidification and consolidation. Alkaline nanoparticles are known to be effective in neutralizing the acidity, while cellulose nanocrystals have the potential to be used as compatible and effective strengthening agents., Experiments: We have grafted cellulose nanocrystals with oleic acid using a 1'1-carbonyldiimidazole-mediated procedure, to increase their dispersibility in organic solvents, and synthesized Ca(OH) 2 or CaCO 3 nanoparticles via a solvothermal process. Grafted nanocellulose and alkaline nanoparticles were used to prepare ethanol-based "hybrids". Prior to the application, the physico-chemical properties of nanocellulose dispersions and "hybrids" were studied by rheology and small-angle X-ray scattering., Findings: Cellulose nanocrystals were effectively grafted and stably dispersed in ethanol. It was shown that the use of ethanol as a dispersing medium, and the addition of alkaline nanoparticles act in a synergistic way, increasing the interactions between grafted cellulose nanocrystals, leading to the formation of clusters. These dispersions are thixotropic, a behavior particularly appealing to conservation purposes, since they can be applied in the liquid state, or, when a more confined application is required, they can be applied in a gel-like state. The demand for high-quality graphene for electronic applications is increasing due to its high carrier mobility and electrical conductivity. In this connection, printing technology is a reliable method towards the fabrication of conductive, disposable graphene-based electrode for low-cost sensor application. Herein, we aimed to report the synthesis of high-quality graphene nanosheets obtained by electrochemical exfoliation of biomass-derived from corn cob. The conductive ink was prepared from this exfoliated graphene and was utilized for the preparation of paper-based graphene electrode towards double stranded DNA (dsDNA) sensor application. This paper, based graphene electrode opens the possibility of direct electrochemical analysis of analyte without any sample preparation. In this study, two irreversible oxide peaks were obtained from paper-based printed graphene electrode, corresponds to oxidation of guanine (G) and adenine (A) of dsDNA in the linear range of 0.2 pg mL -1 to 5 pg mL -1 with the detection limit of 0.68 pg mL -1 and the sensitivity of 0.00656 mA pg -1 cm -2 . Hypothesis: The rate of stain growth of a sessile droplet deposited on paper has been previously studied (Kissa, 1981; Danino and Marmur, 1994; Kawase et al., 1986; Borhan and Rungta, 1993) but is not fully understood. In particular, the mechanism by which the abrupt decrease in growth rate occurs is unknown. This process is expected to follow a model where the disappearance of the droplet is represented by a change to the boundary condition at the droplet-paper interface when the volume of the fluid inside the paper is equal to the volume of the simulated droplet., Experiments: The stain size of sessile droplets on paper was monitored against time. A series of fluids varying in surface tension and viscosity was studied. The kinetics of stain growth was modelled and compared with experiments and existing models of stain growth., Findings: The measured stain area formed by a sessile droplet deposited on paper follows a two regime mechanism (Danino and Marmur, 1994). In the initial regime, the dynamics are governed by the filling of pores. However, in the later stage, the process is influenced by the emptying/redistribution of fluid. Hypotheses: (1) The equilibrium size and characteristics of a radially wicked fluid on porous material such as paper is expected to be dependent on the fluid properties and therefore could serve as a diagnostic tool. (2) The change in wicked stain size between biological fluids is dependent on a change in solid-liquid surface interfacial energy due to protein adsorption., Experiments: Sessile droplets of increasing volume of blood, its components, and model fluids were deposited onto paper and the equilibrium stain size after coming to a halt was recorded. The contact angle of fluid droplets on model cellulose surfaces was measured to quantify the effect that blood protein adsorption at the solid-liquid interface has on radially wicked equilibrium size. Finally the significance of droplet evaporation for the time scale of interest was analysed., Findings: The final stain area of all fluids tested on paper scales remarkably linearly with droplet volume. Different fluids were compared and the gradient of this linear relation was measured. Model fluids varying in surface tension and viscosity all behave similarly and exhibit a constant gradient. Blood and its components produce smaller stains, demonstrated by lower gradients. The gradient is a function of protein concentration, thus the mechanism of this phenomenon was identified as protein adsorption at the cellulose-liquid interface. Paper-based materials have attracted a great deal of attention in sensor applications because they are readily available, biodegradable, inexpensive, and mechanically flexible. Although paper-based sensors have been developed, but important obstacles remian, which include the retention of chemical and mechanical stabilities when paper is wetted. Herein, we develop a simple and scalable process for fabrication of newspaper-based platforms by coating of parylene C and patterning of metal layers. As-prepared parylene C-coated newspaper (PC-paper) provides low-cost, disposable, and mechanically and chemically stable electrochemical platforms for the development of potentiometric ion sensors for the detection of electrolyte cations, such as, H + and K + . The pH and K + sensors produced show near ideal Nernstian sensitivity, good repeatability, good ion selectivity, and low potential drift. These disposable, flexible ion sensors based on PC-paper platforms could provide new opportunities for the development of point-of-care testing sensors, for diagnostics, healthcare, and environment testing., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Hypothesis: Due to their highly retentive properties, innovative recently developed, semi-interpenetrated hydrogels made up of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) chains embedded in a poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (p(HEMA)) network should be efficiently used as cleaning material for fragile and degraded paper artworks. In restoration practice, indeed the wet cleaning of these artworks is usually performed by immersion of paper in water, a procedure which may lead to several drawbacks, including paper fibers swelling and dissolution of water-soluble original components., Experiments: This class of gels were yet presented in literature, but their interactions with paper materials and ability to be spiked with active enzymes (as cleaning agents), have not been analyzed. To establish the suitability of these hydrogels as paper cleaning materials, first, a rheological and microstructural characterization of the gels was performed. Moreover, diffusion of macromolecules inside gels was studied using fluorescence microscopy, to check if these innovative hydrogels can be used as carriers for hydrolytic enzymes. Indeed, pastes and glues are usually found in old paper artworks, and their removal is a very delicate operation that requires a selective action, which is granted by specific hydrolytic enzymes. At the same time, spectroscopic analyses on paper samples under investigation before and after cleaning treatment has been performed, thus assessing the capabilty of these gels as cleaning materials., Findings: With the aim of demonstrating the versatility of these hydrogels, several case studies, i.e., the removal of grime and water-soluble cellulose degradation byproducts, the removal of animal glue and the removal of starch paste from real samples, are presented. Integrated forest biorefinery offers promising pathways to sustainably diversify the revenue of pulp and paper industry. In this context, lignin can be extracted from a residual stream of Kraft pulping process, called black liquor, and subsequently converted into a wide spectrum of bio-based products. Electrochemical acidification of Kraft black liquor by electrodialysis with bipolar membrane results in lignin extraction and caustic soda production. Even though the implementation of this method requires less chemicals than the chemical acidification process, fouling of the ion exchange membranes and especially bipolar membrane impairs its productivity. Membrane thickness and ash content measurements along with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) analysis were performed to identify the nature and mechanisms of the membrane fouling. The results revealed that the fouling layer mostly consisted of organic components and particularly lignin. Based on our proposed fouling mechanisms, throughout the electrodialysis process the pH of the black liquor gradually decreased and as a result more proton ions were available to trigger protonation reaction of lignin phenolic groups and decrease the lignin solubility. Due to the abundance of the proton ions on the surface of the cation exchange layers of the bipolar membrane, destabilized lignin macro-molecules started to self-aggregate and formed lignin clusters on its surface. Over the time, these lignin clusters covered the entire surface of the bipolar membrane and the spaces between the membranes and, eventually, attached to the surface of the cation exchange membrane., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Hypothesis: The process of dried blood spot sampling involves simultaneous spreading and penetration of blood into a porous filter paper with subsequent evaporation and drying. Spreading of small drops of blood, which is a non-Newtonian liquid, over a dry porous layer is investigated from both theoretical and experimental points of view., Experiments and Theory: A system of two differential equations is derived, which describes the time evolution of radii of both the drop base and the wetted region inside the porous medium. The system of equations does not include any fitting parameters. The predicted time evolutions of both radii are compared with experimental data published earlier., Findings: For a given power law dependency of viscosity of blood with different hematocrit level, radii of both drop base and wetted region, and contact angle fell on three universal curves if appropriate scales are used with a plot of the dimensionless radii of the drop base and the wetted region inside the porous layer and dynamic contact angle on dimensionless time. The main aim of this work was to study the removal efficiency of Pb from synthetic and industrial wastewaters by using biomass fly ashes. The biomass fly ashes were produced in a biomass boiler of a pulp and paper industry. Three concentrations of Pb(2+) were tested in the synthetic wastewater (1, 10 and 1000 mg Pb/L). Moreover, two different wastewaters were collected in an industrial wastewater treatment plant (IWWTP) of an industry of lead-acid batteries: (i) wastewater of the equalization tank, and (ii) IWWTP effluent. All the wastewaters were submitted to coagulation-flocculation tests with a wide range of biomass fly ashes dosage (expressed as Solid/Liquid - S/L - ratios). All supernatants were characterized for chemical and ecotoxicological parameters. The use of biomass fly ashes has reduced significantly the Pb concentration in the synthetic wastewater and in the wastewaters collected in the IWWTP. For example, the definitive coagulation-flocculation assays performed over the IWWTP effluent presented a very low concentration of Pb (0.35 mg/L) for the S/L ratio of 1.23 g/L. Globally, the ecotoxicological characterization of the supernatants resulting from the coagulation-flocculation assays of all wastewaters has indicated an overall reduction on the ecotoxicity of the crude wastewaters, due to the removal of Pb., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Mechanisms controlling short time water absorption and the effect of temperature on water absorption into paper were investigated by analyzing previously published data. A dynamic contact angle effect caused by contact line friction explained the liquid uptake dynamics at short times. The water absorption rate increase with temperature is suggested to be controlled by the molecular processes occurring in front of the advancing liquid front. The increase in the non-equilibrium vapor pressure at air-liquid interface leads to higher water molecule adsorption onto fibers and associated lowering of the solid-gas interfacial tension, thereby increasing the wetting velocity and water absorption. Bioactive papers are usually challenged by four major limitations: sensitivity, selectivity, simplicity and strength (4S). Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) treated paper has previously been demonstrated as a Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) active substrate, capable of addressing the 4S issues. In this study, AuNPs on paper substrate were functionalized by a series of biomolecules to develop a generic SERS platform for antibody-antigen detection. The functionalization steps were performed by taking advantage of the high affinity association between Streptomyces avidinii-derived protein, streptavidin, and biotin. Streptavidin was firstly bound onto the AuNPs treated paper using biotinylated-thiol. Subsequently, desired biotinylated-antibody was bound onto the streptavidin. SERS spectra of each functionalization step were obtained to ensure specific adsorption of the bio-molecules. The binding interaction of the antibody with its specific antigen was detected using SERS. Shifts of Raman band associated with α-helix and β-sheet structures indicated structural modification of the antibody upon interaction with its antigen. Predominant tryptophan and tyrosine residue bands were also detected, confirming the presence of antigen. Reproducible spectral features were quantified as AuNP papers were subjected to different concentrations of antigen; the spectra intensity increased as a function of the antigen concentration. The retention of AuNPs on paper remained constant after all the consecutive washing and functionalization steps. This work reports a simple method to form and visualize individual polyelectrolyte-nanoparticle necklace-like structures on paper, which is applicable to other porous surfaces. In this work, one-dimensional necklaces of negatively charged gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been electrostatically assembled along the backbone of a cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) chain adsorbed on paper. The process involves rapidly passing a dilute CPAM solution through filter paper, adsorbing the polyelectrolyte on the surface, followed by the immediate filtration of an AuNP suspension through the same filter paper. The nanoparticles used were negatively charged, citrate ion capped AuNPs with an average diameter of 20 nm. Scanning electron microscopy images of the dried paper sample showed that the AuNP necklaces were adsorbed in a perpendicular direction to that of the cellulose fibers and along the length of the CPAM molecules which were draped over the fibers. The effects of CPAM polymer concentration, charge density, and molecular weight on such assembly of AuNPs were studied. This study examines and quantifies the effect of cationic polyelectrolyte adsorption on paper on the aggregation and retention of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to optimize their Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) enhancement factor and sensitivity. Aggregation of metallic nanoparticles is known as a key factor for intense SERS enhancement. Paper substrates were treated with aqueous solutions of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) varying in concentration, charge density, and molecular weight to control the AuNPs' aggregate size distribution and surface coverage on paper. The Raman Enhancement Factor of AuNPs-CPAM paper was almost an order of magnitude greater than for the untreated AuNPs paper. The high loading and uniform distribution of AuNPs aggregates on CPAM pre-treated paper contributed toward the excellent SERS reproducibility, sensitivity, and high enhancement factor. This configuration of AuNP on paper was favoured by treating the substrate with CPAM solutions of higher concentrations, higher charge density, and greater molecular weight., (Crown Copyright © 2012. The adsorption qualities of GaO(4)Al(12)(OH)(24)(H(2)O)(12)(7+), a polycation with ε-Keggin structure, and its stability in contact with anionic cellulosic materials, was investigated under different concentration and ionic strength conditions. The cellulosic materials employed were two different fully bleached fibre materials, carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC), and a spin-coated cellulose model surface. As analytical techniques, pH-measurements, potentiometric titrations, ICP-OES, QCM-D, equilibrium calculations and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) were used. The adsorption is substantial and the addition of GaO(4)Al(12)(OH)(24)(H(2)O)(12)(7+) to a fibre suspension results in a rapid decrease in pH, followed by a small and slow increase in pH. This behaviour can be explained as due to a rapid and strong (log β>2) equilibrium adsorption of intact GaO(4)Al(12)(OH)(24)(H(2)O)(12)(7+) ions, followed by a slow, and minor, 3-8%, decomposition into different monomers. Alternative layer by layer adsorption of this ion, and CMC, on a spin-coated cellulose model surface constitutes further evidence for the strong interactions between the anionic cellulose materials and GaO(4)Al(12)(OH)(24)(H(2)O)(12)(7+). It is shown that the adsorption observed could not be described as due to an unspecific Donnan adsorption behaviour, neither of GaO(4)Al(12)(OH)(24)(H(2)O)(12)(7+) nor Ga and Al monomers, and specific surface complex formation is therefore discussed and applied. Hydrophobic coatings on carbon paper electrodes are known to provide effective water management, superior gas transfer, and improved mechanical stability of the paper in fuel cell applications. Here, we describe the surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of 5-(perfluorohexyl)norbornene (NBF6) to prepare fluorocarbon-rich films on carbon paper substrates that were pre-treated with O(2) plasma. For our reaction scheme, the growth of the pNBF6 films is dependent on the concentration of hydroxyl groups on the carbon paper substrate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to determine the required time for O(2) plasma exposure to saturate the surface with hydroxyl-termini. Complete, conformal pNBF6 films were grown on carbon paper electrodes exposed to O(2) plasma for at least 45 s. These films exhibit hydrophobic and oleophobic surface properties and serve as insulative barriers to the diffusion of aqueous ions to the conductive carbon fibers., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. This paper compares the influence of the molecular weight of polylelectrolytes forming polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) on wood fibers on adhesion and paper strength. Sheets were made from fibers treated with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) of molecular mass 70,000 and 240,000, respectively, and of poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC)/poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) of molecular mass 30,000 and 80,000, respectively. The results were compared to what has recently been reported for PEM formation on fibers using a low-molecular-mass combination of PAH and PAA and a high-molecular-mass combination of PDADMAC/PSS. There was a less significant improvement in the case of the low-molecular-mass PDADMAC/PSS and the high-molecular-mass PAH/PAA. The adsorbed amounts of PAH and PDADMAC were also determined, showing a lower adsorbed amount of the low-molecular-mass PAH than of the high-molecular-mass PDADMAC. The amount of low-molecular-mass PDADMAC was similar to that found for high-molecular-mass PDADMAC/PSS. Individual fibers were partly treated and studied, showing a less significant decrease in wettability with low-molecular-mass PDADMAC/PSS than with the high-molecular-mass combination. The effect of the molecular weight on the adhesion was discussed in terms of the structure and wettability of the PEMs.

The effect of Fenton's reagent (FR) on surface and dispersion properties of black liquor (BL) was investigated. These properties were compared to those of indulin C (IC), a commercial lignin, and egg lecithin (Le). FR was applied at two different bulk concentrations of H2O2 (160 and 320 mM). At pH 8, a minimum in surface tension for the Fenton treated BL was observed. The dispersant ability of BL, IC and Le in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions was studied by measuring emulsion stability and drop size. It was found that the surface activity and emulsifying capability of BL were higher than those of IC. The emulsifying capability of Le was improved by the FR treatment at low H2O2 concentration.
