Strongly degraded cellulosic artworks usually need deacidification and consolidation. Alkaline nanoparticles are known to be effective in neutralizing the acidity, while cellulose nanocrystals have the potential to be used as compatible and effective strengthening agents. We have grafted cellulose nanocrystals with oleic acid using a 1′1-carbonyldiimidazole-mediated procedure, to increase their dispersibility in organic solvents, and synthesized Ca(OH) 2 or CaCO 3 nanoparticles via a solvothermal process. Grafted nanocellulose and alkaline nanoparticles were used to prepare ethanol-based "hybrids". Prior to the application, the physico-chemical properties of nanocellulose dispersions and "hybrids" were studied by rheology and small-angle X-ray scattering. Cellulose nanocrystals were effectively grafted and stably dispersed in ethanol. It was shown that the use of ethanol as a dispersing medium, and the addition of alkaline nanoparticles act in a synergistic way, increasing the interactions between grafted cellulose nanocrystals, leading to the formation of clusters. These dispersions are thixotropic, a behavior particularly appealing to conservation purposes, since they can be applied in the liquid state, or, when a more confined application is required, they can be applied in a gel-like state. Graphical abstract Abstract Hypothesis The rate of stain growth of a sessile droplet deposited on paper has been previously studied (Kissa, 1981; Danino and Marmur, 1994; Kawase et al., 1986; Borhan and Rungta, 1993) but is not fully understood. In particular, the mechanism by which the abrupt decrease in growth rate occurs is unknown. This process is expected to follow a model where the disappearance of the droplet is represented by a change to the boundary condition at the droplet-paper interface when the volume of the fluid inside the paper is equal to the volume of the simulated droplet. Experiments The stain size of sessile droplets on paper was monitored against time. A series of fluids varying in surface tension and viscosity was studied. The kinetics of stain growth was modelled and compared with experiments and existing models of stain growth. Findings The measured stain area formed by a sessile droplet deposited on paper follows a two regime mechanism (Danino and Marmur, 1994). In the initial regime, the dynamics are governed by the filling of pores. However, in the later stage, the process is influenced by the emptying/redistribution of fluid. Simulations show that experimental results are well described by a model that identifies the change in boundary conditions after the droplet is no longer present above the paper, coupled with the change to a redistribution dominated mechanism. Hypotheses (1) The equilibrium size and characteristics of a radially wicked fluid on porous material such as paper is expected to be dependent on the fluid properties and therefore could serve as a diagnostic tool. (2) The change in wicked stain size between biological fluids is dependent on a change in solid-liquid surface interfacial energy due to protein adsorption. Experiments Sessile droplets of increasing volume of blood, its components, and model fluids were deposited onto paper and the equilibrium stain size after coming to a halt was recorded. The contact angle of fluid droplets on model cellulose surfaces was measured to quantify the effect that blood protein adsorption at the solid-liquid interface has on radially wicked equilibrium size. Finally the significance of droplet evaporation for the time scale of interest was analysed. Findings The final stain area of all fluids tested on paper scales remarkably linearly with droplet volume. Different fluids were compared and the gradient of this linear relation was measured. Model fluids varying in surface tension and viscosity all behave similarly and exhibit a constant gradient. Blood and its components produce smaller stains, demonstrated by lower gradients. The gradient is a function of protein concentration, thus the mechanism of this phenomenon was identified as protein adsorption at the cellulose-liquid interface. Paper-based materials have attracted a great deal of attention in sensor applications because they are readily available, biodegradable, inexpensive, and mechanically flexible. Although paper-based sensors have been developed, but important obstacles remian, which include the retention of chemical and mechanical stabilities when paper is wetted. Herein, we develop a simple and scalable process for fabrication of newspaper-based platforms by coating of parylene C and patterning of metal layers. As-prepared parylene C-coated newspaper (PC-paper) provides low-cost, disposable, and mechanically and chemically stable electrochemical platforms for the development of potentiometric ion sensors for the detection of electrolyte cations, such as, H + and K + . The pH and K + sensors produced show near ideal Nernstian sensitivity, good repeatability, good ion selectivity, and low potential drift. These disposable, flexible ion sensors based on PC-paper platforms could provide new opportunities for the development of point-of-care testing sensors, for diagnostics, healthcare, and environment testing. Paper is kind of essential materials in our daily life. However, it can be easily destroyed by water owing to its superhydrophilic surface. Here, we reported a simple and green fabrication of coloured superhydrophobic paper via swelling and approximate dissolution of cotton followed by precipitation of cellulose and doping coloured stearates. The obtained paper exhibited uniform colour and superhydrophobicity, of which the colour was consistent with the doped stearates owing to the adhesion of stearate powders to the tiny floc fiber surface and we proved that the superhydrophobicity could not be damaged after abrasion resulting from the inner and outer superhydrophobicity and the increased surface roughness. Abstract: This study examines and quantifies the effect of cationic polyelectrolyte adsorption on paper on the aggregation and retention of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to optimize their Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) enhancement factor and sensitivity. Aggregation of metallic nanoparticles is known as a key factor for intense SERS enhancement. Paper substrates were treated with aqueous solutions of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) varying in concentration, charge density, and molecular weight to control the AuNPs’ aggregate size distribution and surface coverage on paper. The Raman Enhancement Factor of AuNPs-CPAM paper was almost an order of magnitude greater than for the untreated AuNPs paper. The high loading and uniform distribution of AuNPs aggregates on CPAM pre-treated paper contributed toward the excellent SERS reproducibility, sensitivity, and high enhancement factor. This configuration of AuNP on paper was favoured by treating the substrate with CPAM solutions of higher concentrations, higher charge density, and greater molecular weight. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The surface chemical and physical character of offset paper was studied before and after application of model fountain solutions based on isopropyl alcohol and an alcohol-free surfactant solution. The paper surface features were characterised with atomic force microscopy and the surface energies were determined by contact angle measurements. Changes in the surface chemical properties induced by the fountain solutions were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy. Coated papers wetted with the surfactant solution revealed a slight increase in the root mean square roughness, but the isopropyl alcohol solution led to no observable changes. The change in sub-micro roughness is ascribed not only to substrate swelling or migration of coating constituents but also to the presence of surfactant on the surface. A change in the surface energy and particularly the polar contribution was observed after application of the surfactant solution. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed an increase in the oxygen-to-carbon ratio, which confirms the presence of surfactant on the surface. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy showed that the isopropyl alcohol solution did not change the elemental composition of the surface whereas the surfactant solution clearly did so. The distribution of surfactant on the surface was confirmed by mapping the characteristic fragments of the molecule. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The treatment of additive-free hand sheet paper samples with cold plasma was carried out and showed that cellulose can be chemically linked with reactive natural products, namely myrcene (My) and limonene (LM). Contact-angle measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to ascertain the occurrence of the grafting. Indeed, the contact-angle value of a drop of water deposited at the surface of paper increased from 30° for unmodified substrate to about 105 and 107°, for LM- and My-treated samples, respectively. In fact, LM- and My-treated surfaces were rendered totally apolar. Indeed, the polar contribution to the surface energy decreased from about 23 mJ/m2 for pristine samples to practically zero for treated ones. The treated surfaces displayed water-barrier properties; the penetration of the liquid was reduced significantly after LM and My treatments. The XPS spectra showed that the modification with LM and My gave rise to very significant change in the O/C ratio, as well as in the intensity of the C1 peak assigned to aliphatic carbon sequences. Abstract: This paper compares the influence of the molecular weight of polylelectrolytes forming polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) on wood fibers on adhesion and paper strength. Sheets were made from fibers treated with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) of molecular mass 70,000 and 240,000, respectively, and of poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC)/poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) of molecular mass 30,000 and 80,000, respectively. The results were compared to what has recently been reported for PEM formation on fibers using a low-molecular-mass combination of PAH and PAA and a high-molecular-mass combination of PDADMAC/PSS. There was a less significant improvement in the case of the low-molecular-mass PDADMAC/PSS and the high-molecular-mass PAH/PAA. The adsorbed amounts of PAH and PDADMAC were also determined, showing a lower adsorbed amount of the low-molecular-mass PAH than of the high-molecular-mass PDADMAC. The amount of low-molecular-mass PDADMAC was similar to that found for high-molecular-mass PDADMAC/PSS. Individual fibers were partly treated and studied, showing a less significant decrease in wettability with low-molecular-mass PDADMAC/PSS than with the high-molecular-mass combination. Abstract: Individual wood fibres were partly treated with polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) consisting of two different polymer combinations, poly allylamine (PAH)/poly acrylic acid (PAA) and polyethylene oxide (PEO)/PAA in order to study the influence of these polymers on fibre wettability. Single fibres were partly treated and analysed using a so-called dynamic contact analyser (DCA) where the fibres are wet under controlled conditions. When PAH/PAA was used, a stronger influence on fibre wettability was detected when PAH was adsorbed in the outermost layer of the multilayer than when PAA was adsorbed in the outermost layer. The wettability of fibres treated with PAH/PAA PEMs was also influenced by the pH of the adsorption. With the PEO/PAA system, however, the type of polymer adsorbed in the outermost layer caused no detectable difference. Tests of sheets prepared from fibres treated with PEO/PAA showed an increase of about 90% in the tensile index when 9 layers were adsorbed. These and other recently published results from similar experiments using PAH/PAA [S.M. Notley, M. Eriksson, L. Wågberg, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 292 (2005) 29] are compared to the results for the PEM-treated individual fibres. The results indicate that fibres with low wettability contribute to greater paper strength. AFM-force measurements, with the aid of a colloidal probe technique, have also been performed using PAH/PAA, showing that there is also a close correlation between lower wettability of the surfaces and a higher pull-off force between the PEM treated surfaces, i.e. the flat surface and the colloidal probe. This is valid for the two pH strategies that are used for the formation for the PAH/PAA PEMs, which are studied using AFM-force measurements. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Polydimethyldiallylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) have been used to build-up polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) on chemical soft wood fibres and on SiO2 at various electrolyte concentrations. Adsorption onto SiO2 was studied using a stagnation point adsorption reflectometer (SPAR), and the adsorbed amount of PDADMAC and PSS on the fibres was determined using nitrogen analysis and Schöniger burning, respectively. The adsorption onto the two substrates was then compared. Paper testing showed that the tensile index (TI) increased by about 90% when 11 layers had been adsorbed, and that there was a correlation between the adsorbed amount and the increase in TI. It was also shown that the particular polymer present in the outermost layer significantly influenced the TI, and that PDADMAC produced a higher TI. A correlation between the adsorbed amount and the TI was also found. Abstract: A void network model, named Pore-Cor, has been used to study the permeation of an ink solvent into paper coating formulations coated onto a synthetic substrate. The network model generated anisotropic void networks of rectangular cross-sectional pores connected by elliptical cross-sectional throats. These structures had porosities and mercury intrusion properties which closely matched those of the experimental samples. The permeation of hexadecane, used as an analogue for the experimental test oil, was then simulated through these void structures. The simulations were compared to measurements of the permeation of mineral oil into four types of paper coating formulation. The simulations showed that the inertia of the fluid as it enters void features causes a considerable change in wetting over a few milliseconds, a timescale relevant to printing in a modern press. They also showed that in the more anisotropic samples, fast advance wetting occurred through narrow void features. It was found that the match between experimental and simulated wetting could be improved by correcting the simulation for the number of surface throats. The simulations showed a more realistic experimental trend, and much greater preferential flow, than the traditional Lucas–Washburn and effective hydraulic radius approaches. The nonlinear dynamics of the impact and penetration of a liquid droplet in a radial capillary is studied numerically. The radial capillary is formed by two parallel plates at a distance of δg. The top plate has an orifice at its center. A droplet impacting on the orifice-plate partly spreads over the top plate, and the rest penetrates into the capillary gap between the two plates. The rate of spread of the fluid on the orifice plate, ξout, is governed by the contact angle, β, between the liquid and the orifice plate and the droplet initial momentum, whereas the rate of fluid spread inside the capillary gap, ξin, is decided by the contact angles with both plates and the plate gap, δg.
