Employed 479 subjects to develop and initially validate a random response scale for the Child Abuse Potential Inventory. Preliminary norm and reliability estimates are reported. Cross-validation and construct validity data are provided, indicating that the random response scale is stable across groups and can discriminate normal responders from random, haphazard responders. Provided data on construct validity for the abuse and lie scales of the Child Abuse Potential Inventory using a sample of college students (N=176). Results confirmed additional validity for the abuse scale which measured inability to adapt. Validity for the lie scale was provided by its positive relationship to other scales. (Author/JAC)

The article focuses on the relationship between child abuse, as measured by the Child Abuse Potential (CAP) Inventory, and authoritarianism, as measured by the Public Opinion Scale (POS). The CAP Inventory is a screening instrument that was designed to determine an individual's potential for child abuse. While POS is a measure of authoritarian tendencies and is a revision of the California Fascist (F) Scale. The POS is composed of 22 statements, to which the subject responds on a 6-point Likert scale that indicates the degree to which he or she agrees or disagrees with the statement.
