In order to determine the correlates of depressive mood, members of a women's volunteer organization were surveyed by a mailed questionnaire that included the Depression Adjective Check List (DACL) Form E and 14 depression-related measures. Correlations are presented and discussed.(Editor)

In order to develop a Japanese version of the Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist—Revised (MAACL-R), the 66 scored adjectives were translated into Japanese and translated back into English as recommended by Werner and Campbell (1971). Confirmatory factor analyses evidenced the existence of five first-order factors (i.e., the anxiety, depression, hostility, positive affect, and sensation-seeking factors) and the two second-order factors (i.e., the dysphoric and pleasant affect factors) underlying the response to the Japanese MAACL-R. Internal consistency ranged from .73 to .91, and four-week retest reliability ranged from .67 to .74 on the seven scales (Anxiety, Depression, Hostility, Positive Affect, Sensation Seeking, Dysphoria, and PASS). Although correlations with the scales of the State-Trait Personality Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale, a sensation-seeking scale, and a subjective well-being scale indicated only acceptable discriminant validity, adequate convergent validity was evidenced by the examination of these correlations. Brief, reliable, and valid assessment instruments are very important for clinical psychology research and practice. The possible equivalency of a short form and the long form of the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List-Revised (MAACL-R; Zuckerman & Lubin,1985) was studied by correlating both forms of the MAACL-R with the State Trait Personality Inventory (Spielberger,1995); the Affect Balance Scale (Bradburn,1969); and the Sensation Seeking Scale (Zuckerman,1978). Reliability and validity of the two forms were equivalent.

The reliability (internal consistency and alternate form) of the trait version of the Positive and Negative Mood Scales in referred samples was found to be high, and the concurrent and discriminate validity was found to be moderate. As expected, means of the Positive Mood Scales were significantly higher in nonreferred samples and means of the Negative Mood Scales were significantly higher in referred samples. The alternate forms for each scale were equivalent. The Positive and Negative Mood Scales seem to be ready for use in research.

In order to determine the predictive validity of the Total Mood score, the Negative Mood Scale, and the Positive Mood Scale of the ST-Depression Adjective Check Lists (ST-DACL), the state version of lists C and D of the ST-DACL was administered on the second day of the Air Force basic training program to 229 newly enlisted Air Force recruits (men = 113; women = 116). Findings were that DACL total score yielded the best overall classification rate, the Positive Mood Scale was most related to predicting eventual discharge, and the Negative Mood Scale was best at predicting graduation.

Four levels of depression were established on the ST-Depression Adjective Check Lists in terms of the following criterion measures : the Beck Depression Inventory, the MMPI Depression Scale, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale.

The factor structure of the state and trait versions of the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL) was assessed. Results support the existence of two underlying factors, "negative mood" and "positive mood", which are robust across sex and age groups (elderly, young adults, and adolescents) and across referred as well as nonreferred populations.

Depressive affect in assisted living (n = 351) and community dwelling (n = 102) elderly was compared by means of the state and trait forms of Set 1 of the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL). Four separate analyses of covariance (age as covariate) showed the main effects of living arrangement and form to be significant on each of the four lists. Assisted living and the state form were significantly higher. Sex was not significant on any of the lists, and none of the two-way and three-way interactions reached significance. Implications of the findings for program planning for the elderly in assisted living arrangements are discussed.

Psychometric characteristics of the trait version of Set 2 (E, F, G) of the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL) were studied in a sample of 177 consecutive admissions to a university medical center clinic of adult psychiatric outpatients (60 males, 117 females). The SCL-90-R and the Psychiatric Diagnostic Interview also were administered. The trait DACL was shown to have high internal consistency (.90 to 0.92) and alternate form reliability (.86 to 0.92) and good concurrent (.76) and discriminant validity. The DACL (E, F, G) was able to differentiate between those with or without the presence of a Major Depression. There was a significant correlation between DACL E and levels of distress and psychopathology. In addition, the magnitude of DACL score significantly differentiated psychiatric diagnostic groups.

This study reports normative data of depressive mood in Brazil, using a Portuguese version of the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL; Lubin, 1981, in press). Participants (N = 1,063) were college students drawn from randomly selected courses in 10 Brazilian universities. Cross-cultural comparisons showed that this Brazilian sample had significantly higher depressive scores compared to Hispanic (p < .01), American (p < .01), and Israeli (p < .05) samples. The results also indicated that Brazilian females (p < .05) and young adults (p < .05) reported significantly more depressive mood than males and older adults, respectively. All reliability (internal consistency, split-half, and alternate form) and concurrent validity measures were found to be appropriate and compared well to other cross-cultural samples.

In order to determine the suitability of the trait form of the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL) for use with the elderly, Forms E, F, and G and a question that required a self-rating of health were administered as part of a larger questionnaire to two groups of nonhospitalized Canadian elderly: (1) 259 subjects (120 males and 139 females) between 60 and 74 years of age; and (2) 136 subjects (50 males and 96 females) 75 to 93 years of age. The reliability of each list (overall mean alpha = .84; overall mean alternate form reliability = .84; and overall mean split-half reliability = .76) seemed to be at an adequate level. Also, the magnitude of these correlations was very similar to those found on the same instrument for a sample of college students.

The development, psychometric characteristics, and clinical utility of a brief measure of life satisfaction, the Brief Life Satisfaction Scales (BLSS), are presented. Factor analysis of the 10-item scale yielded three factors: self-satisfaction, interpersonal satisfaction, and social role satisfaction. Reliability (internal consistency and retest) and validity (concurrent, construct, discriminant, known group, predictive, and incremental) were adequate to good. Clinical uses of the BLSS and additional studies are discussed.

To determine the readability of the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL; Lubin, 1981) and the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List-Revised (MAACL-R; Zuckerman & Lubin, 1985), each adjective on the two instruments was assigned its grade level readability designation from the Dale and O'Rourke (1981) compendium. Median readability level of each of the seven DACL lists was sixth grade with an average of 80% of each list at or below the eighth-grade level. For the MAACL-R, median readability level for each of the seven scales was fourth grade except for Hostility, which was at the sixth-grade level. Approximately 87% of the MAACL-R is at or below the eighth-grade reading level. The discussion suggests that both the DACL and MAACL-R can be considered to be at the eighth-grade reading level.

We compared the efficacy of the state form of the MAACL-R (Zuckerman & Lubin, 1985) in predicting success in Air Force basic training. Results of discriminant functions analyses showed that the Anxiety, Depression, Hostility, Positive Affect, and Sensation Seeking scales of the state MAACL-R efficiently predicted success in basic training. To determine the usefulness of the MAACL-R6 (sixth grade reading level version of the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List-Revised), its characteristics were studied in an adult clinical sample. As with the rescored samples, acceptable reliability and validity with this clinical sample was found. Also, the MAACL-R rescored on the sixth grade adjectives was equivalent in reliability and validity to the MAACL-R6 in this clinical sample, indicating that there was no context effect produced by being imbedded in the larger list of adjectives.

In order to provide additional data on the diagnostic efficiency of the DACL in a situation in which dual diagnoses that involve depression also are considered, two groups of psychiatric patients completed DACL list E and independently were assigned psychiatric diagnoses via the Psychiatric Diagnostic Interview. Findings indicate that the DACL may be of considerable use in screening for depression. Sensitivity was high for both males and females (.84 and .80, respectively) with a cutting score of 12/13. Correct classification rates were also between 4 and 10% higher than base rates.

A critical item scale for the Depression Adjective Check Lists was developed on two psychiatric patient samples and a college student sample. Items that differentiated the nondepressed from the severely depressed subgroup of a community mental health center were cross-validated in the other two samples. A four-adjective Critical Item Scale thereby was constructed for each list of Set 2 (E, F, G) of the Depression Adjective Check Lists.

The diagnostic efficiency of the trait version of the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL) was studied in a two-phase investigation that involved two psychiatric patient samples (N = 308 and N = 67). Cutting scores developed on the first sample were cross-validated successfully on the second sample. In addition, the DACL compared favorably in diagnostic efficiency with the Beck Depression Inventory, the MMPI-D scale, and a Self-rating Depression scale.

The objective of this methodological pilot study was to make a contribution to the French-language validation of the Depressive Adjective Check List (DACL) Set 2 of Forms, E, F, G trait version (Lubin, 1981) and to that of the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List (MAACL-R; Zuckerman & Lubin, 1985). The importance of the study was to validate the French-language translation of these instruments to assess nonclinical depression or dysphoria and affect in two French- and English-speaking convenience sample groups. The Check Lists were administered to 183 Canadian subjects 60 years of age and over of both sexes from rural areas in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, Canada. In order to ensure that the words chosen carried the same connotation as in the English language, a translation-retranslation technique was used. The data collected from this study suggest that the DACL Form G would be most valid to use with either language and/or site in the protocol for future studies.

The purpose of this study was to investigate preliminary internal consistency and split-half reliability estimates of the trait form of the Depression Adjective Check List-Form E (DACL-E), as well as to validate three specific adjectives. The sample consisted of 294 residents of 17 inner-city neighborhoods of a large midwestern city, selected through a modified cluster sampling procedure. The Cronbach's alpha and split-half reliability estimates were similar in magnitude for both genders (.88 for males and .85 for females) and were at a level generally found to be reliable. Analyses of the three DACL-E adjectives--"distressed," "safe," and "active"--were related, respectively, to fear of crime (p less than .01), perception of one's safety (p less than .01), and active participation in crime prevention activities (p less than .001).
