This paper reports one aspect of the Nobles County, Minnesota Mental Health Survey which has been underway since 1949. The general investigation had three main aims: (1) to undertake a study of the prediction of adjustment over time, (2) secure age data on personality and adjustment measures, and (3) develop screening instruments for locating children and adolescents in need of special attention. The first of these aims, the prediction of adjustment, is reported on here. The predictions cover a four year period and the results reported are for the men in the sample. The problems of the present prediction study can be reduced to (1) the development of predictors, (2) the development of criteria, and (3) the relation of predictors to criteria.

The article presents information on the norms for the Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory with student nurses. Clinical experience has indicated the need for special norms on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) for college students and other groups such as student nurses. This paper presents MMPI T scores secured from a normative group of 168 student nurses. The scores of freshman student nurses did not differ significantly from those of the whole group.

The article investigates the sensitivity of the Goodenough to the incoordination involved in using the non-dominant hand. The 40 subjects were all patients at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. They ranged in age from 4 years, 5 months to 13 years, mean 9 years, 5 months. Each subject was able to take the test sitting and had normal upper extremities and vision. It is apparent that the child who draws a man with a non!dominant hand produces fewer details and also gains fewer points for coordination. This test seemed to underestimate the mental age one would otherwise obtain if only the non- dominant hand is available to the child at the time of testing.

This article focuses on profile generalizability in the use of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) with psychiatric inpatients. At the Hastings State Hospital in Minnesota, data were available for patients recurrently hospitalized and repeatedly tested with the MMPI. For each of 55 patients four profiles were found that reflected early and late periods in each of two successive stays. For any subsample of 10 subjects, four matrices could be constructed with call elements made up of, alternatively, the first, second, third, or fourth occurring profile.

This article provides data on the validity of the scales from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) to identify alcoholics, in differentiating psychiatric hospital admissions with alcoholic problems from those admissions without alcoholic problems. The sample included all testable patients admitted to a Veterans Administration neuropsychiatric hospital during a six month period. The criteria of problem drinking, against which the psychometric classification was compared. The mean of the alcoholic group was not significantly different from that of the nonalcoholic group on any of the three alcoholism scales. A second comparison between alcoholics and nonalcoholics using more stringent criteria of alcoholism, that is requiring all three indicators to be present, resulted in significant mean differences on two of the three scales.

The article informs that this investigation is concerned with the applicability of the Hunt-Minnesota Test for Organic Brain Damage to children between the ages of ten and sixteen. The test, which was designed for routine clinical use for detecting and giving additional evidence of deterioration in brain injured subjects, however, has been standardized for adults over sixteen years of age. The subjects were two groups of eighteen boys each, ranging in age from 10 to 16 years. The experimental group was composed of fifteen subjects, at Lincoln Hall, an institution for delinquent boys committed by the court because their behavior and personality deviated sufficiently from the normal causing them to become social problems, and three subjects from the Fordham University Child Guidance Clinic whose referral was on the grounds of educational retardation or behavior problems.

This article discusses conversion hysterics and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). The sample consists of 63 females who were diagnosed "psychoneurosis, cone version hysteria" and tested with the MMPI since 1943 in the University Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The data were collected from the files of Dr. S.R. Hathaway. All available cases were used; the questionable practice of discarding cases having high L, F, or K scores was not followed. Not one of the 63 cases had been involved in the original validation of the Hy scale. This sample, is a cross-validation sample. Most of the patients on entering the hospital had taken the individual card form; a minority had taken the group form.

The article describes an integrated research effort aimed at obtaining an Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scale for predicting irregular discharges among tuberculosis patients. None of the standard MMPI scales consistently discriminated between regular and irregular disc charge patients. However, an Irregular Discharge Scale, consisting of 57 MMPI items, effectively discriminated discharge groups at two of the hospitals.

The article discusses the usefulness of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory in various clinical situations, and one has dealt with the problem of test profiles. These reports have yielded favorable conclusions, but others have criticized the inventory method, and personal experience has revealed that many military psychiatrists and clinical psychologists are disinclined to accept the inventory as a useful and valid instrument. The inventory was also found to reveal special aids for differential diagnosis, for the detection of exaggeration and malingering, and for the identification of lesser clinical entities, but was found to be of little value in detecting sexual deviates.

The article cites a study which analyzes the relationship of aerobic physical fitness to selected personality traits. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between physical fitness as measured by aerobic capacity and selected personality traits as measured by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) for college males. The secondary purpose of the study was to determine whether change in physical fitness of college males is related to changes in personality traits. In the first phase of the study, college males were administered the MMPI and several aerobic physical fitness tests.

The article discusses on the report of a study based on alcoholism. During an investigation on the definition of the alcoholism syndrome, it was noted that two empirical Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) based alcoholism scales were not substantially related. The AL scale, developed by C. Holmes and a second scale devised by D.P. Hoyt and G.M. Sedlacek contain 59 and 68 items respectively, with an overlap of 28 items. Both scales were constructed through item analyses of the MMPI records of alcoholics and a portion of the original Minnesota standardization group, and both scales are reported to differentiate significantly alcoholics from normals.

The article informs that the Kent Emergency Scales (EGY) have long been used in clinical situations to estimate the mental level of patients and to determine the need for more complete tests of intelligence. The Wechsler-Bellevue Scale of Adult Intelligence (WB) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) offer a wide age range for more complete measurement of intelligence. Examiners for both parts of the present study were University of Minnesota students enrolled in an advanced class teaching the administration of the Wechsler batteries.
