Introduction: Public awareness of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a reduction in healthcare utilisation for other diseases. Understanding how the COVID-19 pandemic affects hospital admissions and the disease patterns is crucial for proper triaging and planning of health resources in future pandemics. Aim: To compare the clinical spectrum of paediatric inpatients in the post-COVID-19, pre-COVID-19 and during COVID-19 pandemic periods in a tertiary level teaching centre. Materials and Methods: This ambispective study was conducted at the Paediatrics Department of SAT, Govt. Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. The analysis included all cases hospitalised from April 2019 to March 2022, with the data divided into three time periods. The discharge diagnoses of all cases admitted during the study period were coded according to the ICD-10 criteria and included in the analysis. Differences in admissions, disease patterns, and ICU admissions during the three time periods (pre-COVID-19, post-COVID-19, and during COVID-19) were compared using oneway ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test. Results: In the present study, ward admissions (p-value <0.001), respiratory infections (p-value 0.031), asthma (p-value 0.009), and chronic systemic diseases (p-value 0.018) decreased in the post-COVID-19 period compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, whereas ICU admissions (p-value 0.010) and Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) (p-value 0.002) increased. When comparing COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 periods, there was an increase in ward admissions (p-value 0.01), respiratory infections (p-value 0.018), and diarrhoea (p-value 0.029), but a decrease in the proportion of ICU admissions (p-value 0.01). There was no significant difference in mortality among the three time periods. Conclusion: There was a significant difference in the clinical spectrum of paediatric inpatients. The significant decrease in admissions of chronic systemic diseases, which require regular follow-up for management changes, raises concerns about the potential impact on patient care. Introduction: The success of root canal procedures depends on cleaning and shaping of canals. There are several instrumentation techniques available for root canal preparation. Recently, exclusive rotary file systems called Kedo-SG Blue and Prime-Pedo have been introduced for root canal preparation in primary teeth. The inherent flexibility of these files allows them to preserve the anatomy of curved canals in primary molars. Aim: To compare the instrumentation time, obturation time, and quality of obturation using two paediatric rotary file systems, Kedo-SG BlueTM and Prime-PedoTM, in mandibular primary molars. Materials and Methods: A randomised clinical trial was conducted in the outpatient Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Narayana Dental College and Hospital, Nellore Andhra Pradesh, India, from February 1, 2019 to January 20, 2020. Fifty primary molars with necrotic pulp were included and randomly divided into two groups, with 25 teeth in each group. Group 1 and Group 2 were instrumented with Kedo-SG BlueTM and Prime-PedoTM, respectively. The time taken for instrumentation and obturation was noted in minutes, and the quality of root canal filling was recorded as optimal, underfilled, or overfilled. The data were statistically analysed using an independent Student's t-test for time measurements and a Chi-square test for the quality of obturation. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in instrumentation time and obturation time between the two groups (p-value=0.009; 0.011). The Kedo-SG BlueTM rotary system showed a better quality of obturation compared to the Prime-PedoTM rotary system, although the difference was not statistically significant (p-value=0.22). Conclusion: The Kedo-SG BlueTM rotary system demonstrated shorter instrumentation and obturation times, as well as a higher number of optimally filled canals compared to the Prime-PedoTM rotary system. Introduction: Brain lesions can be caused by varied etiological factors like neoplastic, infectious, inflammatory and vascular diseases. Accurate diagnosis in very important for correct neurosurgical treatment. A retrospective histopathological study of brain lesions is of utmost importance because as it can demonstrate the changes in the spectrum of brain lesions, burden of disease in the community, can reveal the possible risk factors and can suggest probable treatment methods for various neoplastic and non neoplastic brain lesions. Aim: To evaluate the incidence, age distribution, gender distribution, and histopathological spectrum of neoplastic and non neoplastic lesions of brain. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Pathology at Narayana Medical College, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India, from January 2019 to December 2021. Total 216 cases were studied. The tumours were classified under World Health Organization (WHO) classification. To test the mean difference between the groups, Independent sample t-test was done. Results: Out of 216 cases, 180 (83%) were neoplastic and 36 (17%) were non neoplastic lesions. The male: female ratio was 1.03:1. Non neoplastic lesions were common in males (22, 61.11%), while neoplastic lesions were common in females (92, 51.11%). The most common age group affected was 41-50 years (55, 25.46%). Astrocytoma (41, 22.77%) followed by meningioma (40, 22.22%) were the common neoplastic tumours and haematoma(7, 19.44%) was the most common non neoplastic lesion in adults. Common tumour in children (<18 years) was diffuse fibrillary astrocytoma (3/11, 27.27%)and chronic inflammatory pathology was the common non neoplastic lesion (2/11, 18.18%). Conclusion: Majority of cases were seen in 41-50 years age group. Astrocytoma was the common neoplastic tumour and haematoma was the common non neoplastic lesion in adults. Introduction: Prediction of the mesiodistal crown width of unerupted canines and premolars in mixed dentition analysis is crucial. When Tanaka-Johnston's equations, the most popular approach, are applied to diverse ethnic groups, their accuracy is questioned. Aim: To derive a new regression equation of mixed dentition space analysis for predicting the size of unerupted canines and premolars teeth among paediatric population of Wardha, Maharashtra, India. Materials and Methods: The study will be conducted in two phases. The study design for First phase is observational and second phase is interventional. Dental study casts of 400 patients aged 11-18 years will be selected in the first phase. A Digital Vernier Caliper (DVC) will be used to measure the mesiodistal crown dimension of all erupted permanent teeth up to first molar. Between four mandibular incisors and the caninepremolar segments of both arches, correlation and linear regression equations will be created. In the second phase, 30 children aged 6-11 years will be randomly selected. Analysis of Tanaka-Johnston's equations, Huckaba GW equation and the proposed equation will be compared and further statistical analysis will be carried out. Results: New derived regression equation will allow the closer prediction of the size of unerupted canines and premolars in the paediatric population of Wardha. Introduction: The infection potential of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is remarkable due to its airborne transmission through droplets and aerosols. Paediatric dental needs were severely compromised during the COVID-19 lockdown period. Aim: To assess parents' attitudes and concerns towards approaching paediatric dentists during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry at Narayana Dental College and Hospital, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India, from August 2021 to October 2021. The study included 200 parents to assess the attitudes and concerns towards approaching Paediatric dentists during the COVID-19 pandemic. A structured questionnaire was used through Google forms to collect from parents, information regarding precautions, mode of transmission of the virus and type of treatment option. The Chi-square test and Fischer-exact test were used to compare the parameters such as education and occupation with parents' attitude and knowledge. Results: Out of the 200 parents, 37 were males and 163 were females with mean age of the parents was 34.8 years. Out of total 200, 153 (76.5%) of the parents were worried to visit a Paediatric dentist. Only 56 (28%) of the children suffered from toothache during the pandemic. About 28 (14%) of parents believed that the virus is transmitted through the air and 70% of the parents preferred teledentistry. A 152 (76%) of them were willing to pay extra costs and 123 (61.5%) of respondents expected to treat the emergency condition alone. A statistically significant difference was not observed between different occupation in the answers given about transmission paths of a virus (p-value=0.39), extra payment (p-value=0.77), and preference of approach (p-value=0.223). Introduction: The overall incidence of cholecystitis in children appears to be increasing although the exact frequency of acute and chronic cholecystitis among children in India or worldwide remains unknown. The frequency of paediatric cholecystitis has proportionally increased with the childhood obesity and intake of habitual fatty food. Aim: To present the histopathological concordance of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (LC) performed among children for a clinical diagnosis of Gallbladder (GB) disease. Materials and Methods: A single centre retrospective study was performed including histopathological and relevant clinical data of all paediatric LC performed at Career Institute Of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, between January 2019 to January 2022. Paediatric patients who had undergone LC in the designated time period for a clinical diagnosis of cholelithiasis and/or inflammatory GB disease with classical signs of inflammation were included. Study population with LC procedure submitted for histological evaluation were identified by performing an electronic search through the archives of Department of Pathology, Career Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, followed by a manual review of GB specimens, histopathology slides and reports. Results: Among 265 patients who underwent LC during this period, there were 62 (23.4%) children. The average age of presentation was 13 years (range 5-18 years), Forty nine (79%) were girls and 13 (21%) were boys. The clinical diagnosis for which paediatric LCs were performed were cholelithiasis among 51% and cholecystitis among 48%. On histopathological concordance these turned out to be chronic cholecystitis among 98.4% children among which 51% were associated with cholelithiasis. Calculous cholecystitis was more frequent than acalculous cholecystitis. Chronic cholecystitis with cholelithiasis and cholesterolosis was more frequent among adolescent girls. Conclusion: This study suggests that chronic cholecystitis accounts for the majority of inflammatory diseases among children undergoing LC for a GB disease and may or may not be associated with cholelithiasis. Introduction: Obesity is on the increasing trend among children, which leads to many co-morbidities. Obesity which was once a health problem of developed countries has now swept developing countries like India. As the home environment has a powerful influence on the health of a child it is very essential to intervene early in childhood and adolescence to prevent obesity/overweight. Aim: To assess the Knowledge Attitude and Practice (KAP) among mothers regarding obesity in children. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from October 2019 to March 2020. The sample size included 220 mothers with children aged between 6 to 14 years, who have attended the Paediatric outpatient department, Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital in Tamil Nadu, India. After obtaining ethical clearance from the Institutional ethics committee, a predesigned questionnaire was used to collect the socio-demographic variables which included mother's education and occupation, residence, family income, and the total number of family members, and for assessing KAP among mothers. Statistical analysis was carried out using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, version 22.0). Results: The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity was 52 (23.63%), with overweight representing 23 (10.45%) and obesity 29 (13.18%). There was a statistical significance difference when comparing mother's knowledge of children with overweight/obesity versus normal weight regarding physical inactivity (p=0.01) and eating unhealthy foods (p=0.01), an attitude that a child being obese was not a problem (p=0.03), the practice of mothers who allowed seeing television while eating (p=0.001), not restricting media usage (p=0.01), not allowing children to play outdoors every day (p=0.001), and allowed children to eat junk foods (p=0.001). Conclusion: Overweight and obesity were significant in children whose mothers were unaware of the risk factors like eating unhealthy foods and physical inactivity. Introduction: Invasive Bacterial Diseases (IBD) are the major causes of morbidity and mortality in under five children in India. There is difference in the pattern and aetiology of IBD according to the geographical variation and the antimicrobial susceptibility of causative organisms are also variable. There is lack of data on patterns of IBD from central India. Aim: To generate the data on the burden of pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis among under five children in central India and the microorganisms associated with them. Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted from August 2019 to July 2020 at the Department of Paediatrics at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and MY Hospital, indore, on children of 1-59 months of age admitted with Pneumonia, Meningitis and Sepsis. A detailed history was recorded for all the participants and thorough physical examination was done along with chest x-ray, routine laboratory examination and blood cultures were performed. Latex Agglutination Test (LAT) and Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing were performed on Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) samples. All the data collected were recorded in Microsoft(MS) excel sheet and frequency(n), percentages(%) and chi-square test for significance level, were calculated to analyse the collected data. Results: Of the total 450 cases enrolled, 283 (62.8%) had confirmed IBD. Out of the confirmed cases, 183 (64.6%) had pneumonia, 52 (18.3%) had meningitis and 48 (16.9%) had sepsis. Highest case fatality rate was seen with sepsis followed by meningitis and pneumonia. The most common organism isolated was Staphylococcus aureus. Overall, gram-negative bacilli were found to be more resistant to the conventional antibiotics than gram positive organisms. An 83% (n=40) of Staphylococcus aureus were susceptible to methicillin whereas only 45% (n=12) of Klebsiella pneumoniae were susceptible to Amikacin. Conclusion: The present study highlights the predominance of staphylococcus aureus and adverse outcomes of IBD in children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and incomplete immunisation. Emergence of resistant bacterial strains to conventional antibiotics warrants the need to consider the locally prevailing antimicrobial susceptibility patterns for the effective management of these diseases.
