In 2015, the United Nation (UN) launched 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as part of an Agenda to be achieved by 2030. The target is having a global plan of action, aiming at universal peace and social and environmental justice. For this, 169 goals were drawn. The objective of this research is to discuss the congruence between mining activity and the SDG, starting from experiences of the scientific literature and the observation of one mining activity. For this purpose, the Web of Science and Scopus databases were used, with the keywords "sustainable development goals" and "mining". The Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) Portal was used to search papers that relate each one of the SDG to mining. Visits were made to three crushed stone mining industries, located in Monsenhor Gil, Piauí, Brazil, in order to follow the production process of the diabase mineral. From the research in the literature, it was possible to verify that there are several possibilities of reaching the 17 SDG in the mining sector, such as in the promotion of jobs (SDG 8), contributing to the reduction of poverty (SDG 1) and hunger (SDG 2), among others. From the visits, it was observed that the compliance with SDG related to the promotion of jobs, the improvement of income for community's residents, and the infrastructure of the environment are common to all mining or business activities that reach remote and poor areas. This is clear when identifying mining regions that have lost their economic importance once the local development ceases. If the visited industries left the place, it would cause great loss to the residents that depend on them for their jobs. There is a small number of women on the staff, setting up disrespect for SDG 5 regarding the achievement of gender equality. The nature of the activity itself does not justify the asymmetry that possibly happened under the influence of a sexist culture that imposes what is a man's job or a woman's job. Another point is the lack of investment in inclusive education for employees and for residents of the region. In addition, these industries do not recover the degraded areas, compromising the achievement of SDG 13, in regard to combat climate change and its impacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To clarify the current situation, hotspots, and development trends, in the field of climate change adaptation, we analysed a massive literature dataset from the Web of Science database by bibliometric method. By characterising the data about each publication, the result indicate that the field of climate change adaptation has entered a stage of rapid development. The USA occupies a leading position in terms of comprehensive strength with the largest publications output as well as a greater influence therewith. The most productive journal, author, and institution are Climatic Change, Ford JD from Canada, and The Chinese Academy of Science, respectively. Collaboration in this field continues to strengthen, but the growth rates at national levels are relatively low. In addition, the frequency and co-occurrence analysis of keywords reveals ten important research topics: climate change, adaptation, vulnerability, ecosystem, socio-economic system, agriculture, region, extreme event, mitigation, and sustainability, as the foci of climate change adaptation. “Vulnerability” is in a core position in all keywords with the strongest betweenness therein. Developing countries adopt policies to reduce the negative impacts of large amount of waste generated by accelerated industrialization and rapid urbanization, but these actions are far from establishing procedures that meet society's needs, especially regarding the management of municipal solid waste (MSW), which requires the cooperation of numerous stakeholders, and a broad plan of action, in terms of sustainability cities' targets and policies. In this sense, sustainable and integrated solid waste management (S-ISWM) emerges as a solution to address the growing challenges of disposing of MSW in developing countries municipalities. However, to guide S-ISWM implementation there still a need of a framework with a multi-stakeholder and holistic perspective of the MSW management, considering the barriers and critical success factors (CSFs) to achieve it. To this end, a systematic literature review using the PRISMA diagram on the Scopus and Web of Science databases, and then, a content analysis of 75 articles, which met the eligibility criteria, were carried out. As a result, were identified eight barriers, 11 CSFs, which were grouped according to five pillars - public policies, disposal techniques, legal aspects, public-private partnership (PPP) and energy recovery – that affect the municipal S-ISWM and were pointed out ways of implementing these factors in practice. Finally, it was proposed a management artifact – a framework towards S-ISWM - based on state-of-the-art CSFs and barriers, mainly oriented to waste to energy, to the developing countries municipalities. This study offers theoretical, practical, and political implications, serving as a stimulus for the development of public policies with a multidisciplinary approach, providing environmental, economic, and societal contributions, and, thus, encouraging the achievement of the eleventh and the twelfth sustainable development goals. Base-of-the-Pyramid (BoP) is a sustainable proposition that calls on private businesses to alleviate public poverty while fulfilling their own interests. Previous studies show the significance of BoP in the advancement of Sustainable Development Goals. Particularly, in the manner of cooperating with people at the bottom of socio-economic pyramid, multinational enterprises can alleviate public poverty and thus promoting sustainable development at the BoP regions. However, the general state and trend of sustainable development-related studies in the BoP domain are not clear; the popular keywords and theoretical orientations have yet to been determined. This study aims to address these issues by analyzing 273 high-impact articles in the related field from the Web of Science database between 2002 and 2018. A mixed review method is adopted, which combines quantitative bibliometric analysis with qualitative content analysis. The results show that an increasing number of sustainable development-related studies are emerging from the BoP domain, particularly concerning social and economic sustainability in developing countries (or regions). Four theoretical orientations are identified, namely subsistence market, sustainable solution, corporate social responsibility and inclusive business. Energy companies are increasingly pressured to address a broader set of social responsibilities that go beyond legal and environmental requirements, which motivates them to incorporate a holistic approach to their activities. To do so, many firms have adopted Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a response to a diversity of pressures but also as a framework that enables them to prevent and manage risks and be proactive in the context of climate change. While the drivers behind CSR have been thoroughly studied, the specific motivations for energy companies to adopt CSR seems to be missing in the literature. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to review the literature in order to identify and categorize the drivers that motivate energy companies to adopt CSR. To do so, a systematic literature review is conducted that covers all the academic publications from 1990 to 2018 available in four scientific databases and focusing on CSR in the energy sector. The findings indicate that five internal drivers, three connecting drivers, and four external drivers can be identified in the literature as motivations for energy companies to adopt CSR. In addition, it is found that energy companies have a responsive or proactive approach towards the implementation of CSR. This article contributes to the literature by providing a broad systematic review of the academic publications on the topic and by identifying and categorizing the different drivers for CSR implementation that have been pointed out by the scholars in the sample. The practical contributions of this research come from presenting the drivers that motivate energy companies to adopt CSR, which provides understanding of the rationale behind responsible business practices and can translate into positive implications for the energy sector in terms of governance, legislation, and innovative business frameworks. This study can be useful for scholars and practitioners alike because it outlines the most relevant lines of research on the topic and provides a synthesis of the literature that highlights research gaps as well as trends.
