The success of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) depends on the quality of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) templates. This study developed a cost-effective and eco-friendly DNA extraction system utilizing poly(3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine)-modified cellulose paper (polyDOPA@paper). PolyDOPA@paper was prepared by oxidatively self-polymerizing DOPA under weak alkaline conditions and utilizing the adhesive property of polyDOPA on different materials. Compared to the uncoated cellulose paper, polyDOPA coating significantly enhances DNA adsorption owing to its abundant amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl moieties. The DNA extraction mechanism using polyDOPA@paper was discussed. The maximum adsorption capacity of polyDOPA@paper for DNA was 20.7 μg cm−2. Moreover, an automated extraction system was designed and fabricated using 3D printing technology. The device simplifies the operation and ensures the reproducibility and consistency of the results. More importantly, it eliminates the need for specialized training of operators. The feasibility of the polyDOPA@paper-based automated extraction system was evaluated by quantitatively detecting Escherichia coli in spiked milk samples via a real-time PCR. An innovative integrated paper-based microdevice was developed for protein separation by isoelectric focusing (IEF), allowing for robust design thanks to a 3D-printed holder integrating separation channel, reservoirs, and electrodes. To reach robustness and precision, the optimization focused on the holder geometry, the paper nature, the reservoir design, the IEF medium, and various focusing parameters. A well-established and stable pH gradient was obtained on a glass-fiber paper substrate with simple sponge reservoirs, and the integration of the electrodes in the holder led to a straightforward system. The separation medium composed of water/glycerol (85/15, v/v) allowed for reducing medium evaporation while being an efficient medium for most hydrophobic and hydrophilic proteins, compatible with mass spectrometry detection for further proteomics developments. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the use of glycerol solutions as a separation medium in a paper-based microdevice. Analytical performances regarding pH gradient generation, pI determination, separation efficiency, and resolution were estimated while varying the IEF experimental parameters. The overall process led to an efficient separation within 25 min. Then, this methodology was applied to a sample composed of saliva doped with proteins. A minimal matrix effect was evidenced, underscoring the practical viability of our platform. • Recent advances in paper/thread-based zone and capillary electrophoresis techniques. • Various sample pretreatment methods using electrophoresis on wicking substrates. • Review of unmodified and modified microfluidic paper/threat -based chromatography. • Application of paper/threat -based chromatography in blood separation. Paper and thread are widely used as the substrates for fabricating low-cost, disposable, and portable microfluidic analytical devices used in clinical, environmental, and food safety monitoring. Concerning separation methods including chromatography and electrophoresis, these substrates provide unique platforms for developing portable devices. This review focuses on summarizing recent research on the miniaturization of the separation techniques using paper and thread. Preconcentration, purification, desalination, and separation of various analytes are achievable using electrophoresis and chromatography methods integrated with modified or unmodified paper/thread wicking channels. A variety of 2D and 3D designs of paper/thread platforms for zone electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis, and modified/unmodified chromatography are discussed with emphasis on their limitation and improvements. The current progress in the signal amplification strategies such as isoelectric focusing, isotachophoresis, ion concentration polarization, isoelectric focusing, and stacking methods in paper-based devices are reviewed. Different strategies for chromatographic separations based on paper/thread will be explained. The separation of target species from complex samples and their determination by integration with other analytical methods like spectroscopy and electrochemistry are well-listed. Furthermore, the innovations for plasma and cell separation from blood as an important human biofluid are presented, and the related paper/thread modification methods are explored. Abstract: A novel and simple method for the determination of active endocrine disrupter compounds (octylphenol OP, and nonylphenol NP) in paper using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and headspace solid-phase microextraction, coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry has been developed. Parameters affecting the efficiency in the MAE process such as exposure time and extraction solvent were studied in order to determine operating conditions. The optimised method was linear over the range studied (1.25–125μgkg-1 for OP and 9.50–950μgkg-1 for NP) and showed good level of precision, with a RSD lower than 10% and detection limits at 0.10 and 4.56μgkg-1 for OP and NP, respectively. The results obtained from six different types of paper revealed the presence of the target compounds in all samples analysed, at levels ranging between 3 and 211μgkg-1. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this study, capillary electrophoresis (CE) was used for separation of inorganic and organic ions from waters of paper and paperboard machines at mills. The instrument was constructed for on-line measurements by building a batch-type sample feeding unit. Chloride, thiosulphate, sulphate, oxalate, sulphite, hydrogen sulphide, formate, carbonate, phosphate and acetate in the process water samples were separated using an ion-specific separation system in CE with dicarboxylic acid buffer (pH 8.2), with pyridinium-2,3-dicarboxylic acid modified with commercial NICE-Pak OFM&z.sbnd;OH solution (pH 12.0) or with a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide solution modified with chromate (pH 10.6). In addition, Analis CEofix Anions 8 electrolyte solution was tested in on-line studies at mills. It allowed 5 min separation time for the anions. Aluminium was determined at pH 3.6 in 10 min by using a laboratory-made imidazole buffer modified with 18-crown 6-ether. The developed CE systems were used to monitor the concentrations of sulphur species in dithionite degradation, to estimate corrosion degree in the water tanks, to monitor formaldehyde as the biocide chemical in wire washing and, in general, to observe process disturbances resulting from chemical feedings and their sites. The CE combination was on-line coupled to eight different process machines for continuous monitoring of concentrations for periods between two weeks and one month at paper and pulp mills in Finland. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) has been applied to the analysis of volatile organic compounds emitted from a naturally aged groundwood pulp paper originating from an old book in order to access the products produced through the decomposition reactions occurring in paper upon ageing. Two different extraction methods were developed and compared: headspace SPME and contact SPME. The influence of few extraction parameters were tested in order to define the best extraction conditions. An optimised non-destructive contact SPME method was elaborated and allowed the characterisation of more than 50 individual constituents. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We studied the aging behaviour of gelatin used to size paper. Thus far, research on the aging of paper has largely ignored the sizing agent. Degradation of the protein was characterised and the impact of paper components, such as cellulose, and aluminium potassium sulphate was evaluated. Whatman No. 1 filter papers sized with two types of gelatins (A and B) were prepared as model samples. Commercially sized modern papers (Arches) were also studied in order to compare laboratory samples with real artist papers. Both types of papers were artificially aged (80 °C, 50% relative humidity for 35 and 94 days). Historic papers were included in the study in order to compare artificially aged with naturally aged gelatin. The aqueous extracts from the papers were characterised by aqueous size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) using four PL-Aquagel-OH columns and UV photodiode array detection at 220, 254 and 280 nm. Results showed that gelatin undergoes hydrolysis upon aging, type A gelatin showing a faster degradation rate than type B. The result was an increase in the lower-molar-mass fractions, under 50 000 g mol−1, and especially in a characteristic fraction with a peak molecular mass (Mp) of 14 000 g mol−1. A significant decrease in the extraction yields of α-, β- and γ-chains occurred after aging. This was attributed to crosslinking, leading to the formation of less-soluble polypeptides with very high molar mass (>800 000 g mol−1). Less than 10% alum had no impact on the degradation rate; higher alum contents accelerated hydrolysis reactions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

While current trends in Green Analytical Chemistry aim at reducing or simplifying sample treatment, food usually comprises complex matrices where direct analysis is not possible in most cases. In this context, sample treatment plays a pivotal role. Biogenic amines are naturally formed in many foodstuffs due to the action of microorganisms, while their presence has been associated with adverse health effects. In this work, the extraction of seven biogenic amines (cadaverine, histamine, phenylethylamine, putrescine, spermidine, spermine, and tyramine) from beer samples has been simplified using laboratory filter paper as sorbent without any further modification. The analysis of the eluates by direct infusion mass spectrometry reduces the time of analysis, increasing the sample throughput. This simple but effective method enabled the determination of the analytes with limits of detection as low as 0.06 mg L -1 and relative standard deviations better than 11.9%. Thermal papers (e.g. point of sale receipts, adhesive labels, tickets) significantly contribute to contamination of paper material cycles and the environment with substances of (eco-) toxicological concern. In particular, they contain color developers like endocrine disrupting bisphenols in typical concentrations of about 1-2 percent per weight (wt%). Bisphenol A (BPA) was used as the common color developer over the last decades, but it will be restricted for thermal paper application in the European Union to a limit of 0.02 wt% from 2020 onwards. Consequently, a variety of BPA substituents such as bisphenol S (BPS) and its derivatives gain importance in thermal paper application. In this study, a rapid, reliable and cost-effective method for identification and quantification of BPA, alternative color developers and related substances like sensitizers is presented based on HPLC separation coupled with diode array detection (DAD) and Corona charged aerosol detection (CAD). Quantification was performed with regard to the intended use of the substances in thermal papers. Besides traditional UV external calibration using reference standards, alternative quantification approaches, in particular UV chromophore concentration for BPS derivatives and CAD universal response technique for low-volatile color developers, were applied and compared in order to allow quantification without reference substances. A market analysis for intended used color developers and sensitizers was performed on thermal paper samples (n = 211) collected in Germany during 2018 and 2019. Pergafast 201 (in 41.7% of the samples) was the most common color developer with concentrations above 0.02 wt%, followed by BPA (36.0%), BPS (13.3%) and other BPS derivatives known as D8, D-90, BPS-MAE and TGSA, that are mainly present in adhesive labels. Fluoro-functionalized paper was prepared and applied in solid phase extraction (SPE) for the analysis of trace-level perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). The proposed fluoro-functionalized paper-based solid-phase extraction (Fp-SPE) exhibits significant advantages for sample preparation, such as the biodegradability of paper-based adsorbent, simple manipulation and low cost. Owing to the fluorous affinity, the Fp-SPE technique with high sensitivity and high selectivity is more suitable for the selective enrichment of fluorine-containing molecules from the background of non-fluorinated organic compounds in a real water sample. Combined with high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry analysis (HPLC-MS/MS), the linear range of the PFCs, including perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA), perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), was 0.20-5.0 ng/L with the limits of detection (LOD) ranging from 0.04-0.05 ng/L and the limits of quantification (LOQ) ranging from 0.15-0.20 ng/L. The method was then applied to the analysis of tap water, river water and waste water samples. The adsorption of hydrocarbons present in gasoline residues on household materials was investigated via inverse gas chromatography (IGC). A series of hydrocarbons (n-heptane, n-octane, n-nonane, toluene, p-xylene, and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene) and three household materials (carpet fibers, cotton fabric, and cardboard) were selected in this work. IGC measurements using columns packed with these household materials were conducted to obtain molar enthalpies of adsorption of the selected hydrocarbons over the temperature range of 40 to 70 °C. Adsorption isotherms and Henry's law solubility coefficients (S) were also determined at 40 °C. Results from our IGC measurements revealed that molar enthalpies of adsorption, adsorption isotherms, and solubility coefficients were largely dependent upon the structures and size of hydrocarbons and the choice of solid substrates. Measured molar enthalpies of adsorption became more exothermic with increasing size of hydrocarbons, ranging from -23.4 to -40.9 kJ/mol for carpet fibers, -36.2 to -48.2 kJ/mol for cotton fabric, and -30.1 to -52.5 kJ/mol for cardboard. From the adsorption isotherms and the measured retention times as a function of the injection amount, the adsorption affinity of hydrocarbons to the carpet fibers was found to be weaker than the affinity between hydrocarbon molecules, producing relatively lower solubility coefficients for all hydrocarbons than those measured on cotton fabric and cardboard. However, the adsorption affinities of hydrocarbons to both cotton fabric and cardboard were much stronger with increased solubility coefficients presumably due to the diffusion and dispersion of hydrocarbons through solid substrates. In particular, solubility coefficients of three aromatics on cardboard were significantly larger than those measured on carpet fibers and cotton fabric. Mineral oil saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOAH) are food contaminants, mainly due migration from packaging materials made from recycled fibers, but other routes of entry into food have also been identified. Legal limits for MOSH and MOAH in food and food contact materials currently are not set, but are to be expected in the near future. For the analysis of MOSH and MOAH, the very well developed and highly automated on-line liquid chromatography-gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (LC-GC-FID) is commonly used. However, this approach is time-consuming, and data interpretation is a very challenging task. Therefore, a planar solid phase extraction (pSPE) method was developed for a rapid and efficient MOSH and MOAH screening in paper and cardboard. Based on high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), pSPE offers the simultaneous clean-up and analysis of up to 20 samples in parallel, while MOSH and MOAH analytes were focused in two distinct target zones on silica gel HPTLC plates after a twofold development. Plate impregnation with primuline allowed the detection of MOSH by fluorescence, while MOAH were detected by UV light absorption. The pSPE screening approach provided limits of detection of 7.2 and 2.3 ng/zone for MOSH and MOAH, respectively, corresponding to 1.8 and 0.6 mg/kg paper. Coupling of pSPE with GC revealed the common MOSH and MOAH peak humps, while marker substances offered the identification of the mineral oil origin or information about recycled fiber materials. As compared to SPE-GC-FID analyses, the determined quantities of MOSH and MOAH in cardboard samples indicated pSPE as a rapid and suitable screening tool. The co-migration of polyolefin oligomeric saturated hydrocarbons, native n-alkanes, terpenes and possibly essential oils or sterol esters, however, can result in an overestimation of MOSH and MOAH. This paper describes the development of an original micro-solid phase extraction device and its evaluation for the isolation of F2-isoprostanes (F2-IsoPs) from cord and maternal plasma samples. The unit is very simple and consists in a rotating disc (1.8 cm diameter) of oxidized buckypaper (BP), enwrapped in a polypropylene mesh pouch. Even if the selected F2-IsoPs have logP and pKa values that make them suitable candidates for their sorption on BP, several parameters were optimized to maximize recoveries: time of adsorption and desorption; stirring speed; volume, pH and ionic strength of the sample; type, volume, and fractions of the elution solvent; oxidation grade of BP. Among all, the last one was crucial in affecting extraction yields because of the analyte interactions with polar functionalities, introduced by a preliminary oxidative acid treatment. The investigation established the optimal oxidation time and highlighted the pros and cons of the acid activation step. All extracts were analyzed by means of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Validation was performed according to the main FDA guidelines for bioanalytical methods. Depending on the spike level and analyte, recoveries ranged between 30 and 120% with precision and accuracy values lower than 20%. Quantitative analysis was accomplished by matrix-matched calibration curves whose determination coefficients were higher than 0.95. Lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ) spanned the range 2.45-6.77 μg L -1 . The validated method was applied to the analysis of eight pairs of mother/child plasma samples, revealing the presence of 8-iso-15-keto-PGF 2α and 8-iso-PGE 2 at a concentration of about 10 μg L -1 in most cord plasma samples of preterm newborns., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Three-dimensional (3-D) graphene was synthesized by the assembly of graphene oxide with phenolic resin, followed by carbonization in argon. The as-synthesized 3-D graphene has excellent conductivity, good thermal stability, large specific surface area (1511 m² g -1 ) and pore volume (0.90 cm 3  g -1 ). By immobilizing the 3-D graphene onto the stainless steel wire (SSW), we obtained a 3-D graphene coated fiber that was then used as a working electrode for electro-enhanced SPME, which shows a 3.2-fold improvement of extraction efficiency for bisphenol A (BPA) over that of traditional SPME. Coupled to gas chromatography, the method was developed to the determination of BPA with good linearity (R 2  = 0.9935) in the range of 0.1-10 μg mL -1 . The limit of detection was calculated to be 0.006 μg mL -1 based on the signal-to-noise of 3. The proposed method was applied for the analysis of three kinds of thermal papers with BPA being detected in all samples (0.696-3.78 mg g -1 ). The generation of concentration gradients is an essential operation for several analytical processes implemented on microfluidic paper-based analytical devices. The dynamic gradient formation is based on the transverse dispersion of chemical species across co-flowing streams. In paper channels, this transverse flux of molecules is dominated by mechanical dispersion, which is substantially different than molecular diffusion, which is the mechanism acting in conventional microchannels. Therefore, the design of gradient generators on paper requires strategies different from those used in traditional microfluidics. This work considers the foundations of transverse dispersion in porous substrates to investigate the optimal design of microfluidic paper-based concentration gradient generators (μPGGs) by computer simulations. A set of novel and versatile μPGGs were designed in the format of numerical prototypes, and virtual experiments were run to explore the ranges of operation and the overall performance of such devices. Then physical prototypes were fabricated and experimentally tested in our lab. Finally, some basic rules for the design of optimized μPGGs are proposed. Inverse liquid chromatography is a technique for studying solid/liquid interaction and most specifically for the determination of solute adsorption isotherm. For the first time, the adsorption behaviour of microfibrillated cellulose was assessed using inverse liquid chromatography. We showed that microfibrillated cellulose could adsorb 17 mg/g of tetrasulfonated optical brightening agent in typical papermaking conditions. The adsorbed amount of hexasulfonated optical brightening agent was lower (7 mg/g). The packing of the column with microfibrillated cellulose caused important axial dispersion (D a  = 5e-7 m²/s). Simulation of transport phenomena in the column showed that neglecting axial dispersion in the analysis of the chromatogram caused significant error (8%) in the determination of maximum adsorbed amount. We showed that conventional chromatogram analysis technique such as elution by characteristic point could not be used to fit our data. Using a bi-Langmuir isotherm model improved the fitting, but did not take into account axial dispersion, thus provided adsorption parameters which may have no physical significance. Using an inverse method with a single Langmuir isotherm, and fitting the transport equation to the chromatogram was shown to provide a satisfactory fitting to the chromatogram data. An extraction and determination method is shown for the analysis of dyes and solvents present in two types of ballpoint pen inks that are deposited onto paper. Ink extracts are analysed using a combination of gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and high-pressure liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD), within a single sample extraction procedure. Seventeen solvents and thirteen dyes contained in two Montblanc ® inks (black and blue) were monitored for 45 months at monthly intervals, in order to determine variations in the concentrations of the compounds over time. We also studied the relative variations between different compounds and the generation of degradation products such as phenol. The concentration data obtained from these compounds during their exposure have been analysed and a multiple regression model is developed for each ink type that allows an estimate of the exposure time of the ink on paper with a maximum error of between 4 and 7 months., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. A sensitive, rapid and efficient ionic liquid-based vortex assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (IL-VALLME) with Liquid Chromatography Mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method is proposed for the determination of bisphenols in thermal paper. Extraction factors were systematically optimized by response surface methodology. Experimental factors showing significant effects on the analytical responses were evaluated using design of experiment. The limit of detection for Bisphenol-A (BPA) and Bisphenol-S (BPS) in thermal paper were 1.25 and 0.93μgkg -1 respectively. The dynamic linearity range for BPA was between 4 and 100μgkg -1 and the determination of coefficient (R 2 ) was 0.996. The values of the same parameters were 3-100μgkg -1 and 0.998 for BPS. The extraction recoveries of BPA and BPS in thermal paper were 101% and 99%. Percent relative standard deviation (% RSD) for matrix effect and matrix match effects were not more than 10%, for both bisphenols. The present work reports on the development of a pressure-affected based headspace (HS) analytical technique for the determination of calcium carbonate content in paper samples. By the acidification, the carbonate in the sample was converted to CO 2 and released into the headspace of a closed vial and then measured by gas chromatography (GC). When the amount of carbonate in the sample is significant, the pressure created by the CO 2 affects the accuracy of the method. However, the pressure also causes a change in the O 2 signal in the HS-GC measurement, which is a change that can be used as an indirect measure of the carbonate in the sample. The results show that the present method has a good precision (the relative standard deviation<2.32%), and good accuracy (the relative differences compared to a reference method was<5.76%). This paper describes a new method for the rapid determination of the moisture content in paper materials. The method is based on multiple headspace extraction gas chromatography (MHE-GC) at a temperature above the boiling point of water, from which an integrated water loss from the tested sample due to evaporation can be measured and from which the moisture content in the sample can be determined. The results show that the new method has a good precision (with the relative standard deviation <0.96%), high sensitivity (the limit of quantitation=0.005%) and good accuracy (the relative differences <1.4%). A novel microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was designed to filter, extract, and pre-concentrate explosives from soil for direct analysis by a lab on a chip (LOC) device. The explosives were extracted via immersion of wax-printed μPADs directly into methanol soil suspensions for 10min, whereby dissolved explosives travelled upwards into the μPAD circular sampling reservoir. A chad was punched from the sampling reservoir and inserted into a LOC well containing the separation buffer for direct analysis, avoiding any further extraction step. Eight target explosives were separated and identified by fluorescence quenching. The minimum detectable amounts for all eight explosives were between 1.4 and 5.6ng with recoveries ranging from 53-82% from the paper chad, and 12-40% from soil. The main goal of this work was to optimize the SPME sampling method for measuring microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) emitted by active molds that may deteriorate historical objects. A series of artificially aged model materials that resemble those found in historical objects was prepared and evaluated after exposure to four different types of fungi. The investigated pairs consisted of: Alternaria alternata on silk, Aspergillus niger on parchment, Chaetomium globosum on paper and wool, and Cladosporium herbarum on paper. First of all, a selection of the most efficient SPME fibers was carried out as there are six different types of fibers commercially available. It was important to find a fiber that absorbs the biggest number and the highest amount of MVOCs. The results allowed establishing and selecting the DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber as the most effective SPME fiber for this kind of an analysis. Another task was to optimize the time of MVOCs extraction on the fiber. It was recognized that a time between 12 and 24h is adequate for absorbing a high enough amount of MVOCs. In the last step the temperature of MVOCs desorption in the GC injection port was optimized. It was found that desorption at a temperature of 250°C allowed obtaining chromatograms with the highest abundances of compounds. This manuscript describes the development of a capillary electrophoresis (CE) method for the detection of acid and basic dyes and its application to real samples, blue-pen-ink strokes on office paper. First, a capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method was developed for the separation of basic and acid dyes, by studying the separation medium (buffer nature, pH and relative amount of additive) and instrumental parameters (temperature, voltage and capillary dimensions). The method performance was evaluated in terms of selectivity, resolution (above 5 and 2 for acid dyes and basic dyes, respectively, except for two basic dye standards), LOD (lower than 0.4 mg/L) and precision as intraday and interday RSD values of peak migration times (lower than 0.6%). The developed method was then applied to 34 blue pens from different technologies (rollerball, ballpoint, markers) and with different ink composition (gel, water-based, oil-based). A microdestructive sample treatment using a scalpel to scratch 0.3mg of ink stroke was performed. The entire electropherogram profile allowed the visual discrimination between different types of ink and brands, being not necessary a statistical treatment. A 100% of discrimination was achieved between pen technologies, brands, and models, although non-reproducible zones in the electropherograms were found for blue gel pen samples. The two different batches of blue oil-based pens were also differentiated. Thus, this method provides a simple, microdestructive, and rapid analysis of different blue pen technologies which may complement the current analysis of questioned documents performed by forensic laboratories., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. This study reports on a rapid method for the determination of methanol in paper-based materials by alkaline extraction, coupled with headspace analysis. Methanol partition equilibria between solid-liquid phases and vapor-liquid phases were conducted in two separate containers, from which an equation for calculating the total methanol content in the original paper sample was derived. It was found that the extraction equilibrium of methanol from solid sample could be achieved within 5min at room temperature using a high-speed disintegrator, and a subsequent neutralization step is an effective way to prevent methanol from being regenerated at high temperature during headspace equilibration. The results showed that the relative standard deviations for reproducibility tests were in the range of 1.86-6.03%, and the recoveries were in the range of 92.3-107%. The present method is simple and practical; it can be an efficient tool for quantifying the methanol content in paper-based materials and thus play an important role in the investigation of methanol migration behavior in food and beverage packaging., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, chemically modified cellulose paper was introduced as a novel extracting phase for thin film microextraction (TFME). Different reagents (Octadecyltrichlorosilane, diphenyldichlorosilane, cyclohexyl isocyanate and phenyl isocyanate) were used to modify the cellulose papers. The modified papers were evaluated as a sorbent for the extraction of some synthetic and natural estrogenic hormones (17α-ethynylestradiol, estriol and estradiol) from aqueous samples. Liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection was used for the quantification of the extracted compounds. The cellulose paper modified with phenyl isocyanate showed the best affinity to the target compounds. TEME parameters such as desorption condition, shaking rate, sample ionic strength and extraction time were investigated and optimized. Limit of detections were between 0.05 and 0.23μgL(-1) and relative standard deviations were less than 11.1% under the optimized condition. The calibration curves were obtained in the range of 0.2-100μgL(-1) with a good linearity (r(2)>0.9935). Wastewater, human urine, pool and river water samples were studied as real samples for the evaluation of the method. A method for determining potentially health-relevant components in paperboard used for packaging dry foods as comprehensively as technically feasible was applied to a sample of recycled paperboard. The task was specified by a detection limit in food of 0.01mg/kg, from which a detection limit of 0.1mg/kg in paperboard was derived. Extracts from the paperboard were preseparated into seven fractions by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and transferred on-line to gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The chromatograms visualize the high complexity of the material that may migrate into foods at toxicologically potentially relevant concentrations. Since only a minority of the substances was also detectable in fresh fiber board, most must have originated from chemicals used in the paper and board fed into the recycling process. Significant variability between recycled paperboards of four manufacturers was observed because of varying feedstocks. Using comprehensive two-dimensional GC (GC×GC) with time of flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS), more than 250 substances were counted that probably exceeded the detection limit and were probably of sufficient volatility for migration into dry food. It is concluded in three main messages to risk managers: (i) since most potential migrants have not been adequately evaluated, many not even identified, the safety required by Article 3 of EU Regulation 1935/2004 has not been ensured; (ii) the number of substances potentially migrating into food above 0.01mg/kg is too large to realistically be brought under control; (iii) a barrier reducing the migration into food by a factor of 100 over the life time of a product would keep the migration of all except a few well known substances below 0.01mg/kg in food., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. This article analyses the interferences in the quantification of traces of bisphenol S in paper by applying the direct analytical method "analytical pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry" (Py-GC/MS) in conjunction with on-line derivatisation with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). As the analytes are simultaneously analysed with the matrix, the interferences derive from the matrix. The investigated interferences are found in the analysis of paper samples, which include bisphenol S derivative compounds. As the free bisphenol S is the hydrolysis product of the bisphenol S derivative compounds, the detected amount of bisphenol S in the sample may be overestimated. It is found that the formation of free bisphenol S from the bisphenol S derivative compounds is enhanced in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) under pyrolytic conditions. In order to avoid the formation of bisphenol S trimethylsulphonium hydroxide (TMSH) is introduced. Different parameters are optimised in the development of the quantification method with TMSH. Legislation on food contact materials, mainly focusing on food safety, requires the absence of potentially harmful substances in the migrate from packaging materials. For recycled paperboard with essentially unknown input this presupposes comprehensive analysis of all substances potentially migrating above the regulatory threshold. Present chemical analysis is strong in target analysis, but not in methodologies enabling comprehensive analysis of unknown mixtures at low detection limits. An attempt was made to analyze the potential migrants into dry foods as comprehensively as possible. The required detection limit was derived from the conventional regulatory European detection limit of 0.01 mg/kg in food, which was approximated by a detection limit in paperboard of 0.1mg/kg. Various obstacles had to be overcome and adjusted or even new tools were required. Compromises were unavoidable, which could have resulted in loss of relevant components. This paper points out facets of related analytical methodology, but also provides an analytical base for the information of regulators about the feasibility of the old legal requirements that substances endangering human health must not migrate into food., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. So far the majority of the measurements of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) were obtained from on-line high performance liquid chromatography-gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (on-line HPLC-GC-FID). Since this technique is not available in many laboratories, an alternative method with more easily available tools has been developed. Preseparation on a small conventional liquid chromatographic column was optimized to achieve robust separation between the MOSH and the MOAH, but also to keep out the wax esters from the MOAH fraction. This was achieved by mixing a small portion of silica gel with silver nitrate into highly activated silica gel and by adding toluene into the eluent for the MOAH. Toluene was also added to the MOSH fraction to facilitate reconcentration and to serve as a keeper preventing loss of volatiles during solvent evaporation. A 50 μl volume was injected on-column into GC-FID to achieve a detection limit for MOSH and MOAH below 1 mg/kg in most foods., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)

In this work, a method for measuring polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in contaminated solid waste was investigated. This waste includes paper that is used in electric transformers to insulate electric components. The PCBs in paper sample were extracted by supercritical fluid extraction and analyzed by gas chromatography-electron capture detection. The recoveries with this method (84-101%) were much higher than those with conventional water extraction (0.08-14%), and were comparable to those with conventional organic solvent extraction. Limit of detection was 0.0074 mg kg(-1) and measurable up to 2.5 mg kg(-1) for 0.5 g of paper sample. Data for real insulation paper by the proposed method agreed well with those by the conventional organic solvent extraction. Extraction from wood and concrete was also investigated and good performance was obtained as well as for paper samples. Mineral oil hydrocarbons are complex as well as varying mixtures and produce correspondingly complex chromatograms (on-line HPLC-GC-FID as described in Part 1): mostly humps of unresolved components are obtained, sometimes with sharp peaks on top. Chromatograms may also contain peaks of hydrocarbons from other sources which need to be subtracted from the mineral oil components. The review focuses on the interpretation and integration of chromatograms related to food contamination by mineral oil from paperboard boxes (off-set printing inks and recycled fibers), if possible distinguishing between various sources of mineral oil. Typical chromatograms are shown for relevant components and interferences as well as food samples encountered on the market. Details are pointed out which may provide relevant information. Integration is shown for examples of paperboard packaging materials as well as various foods. Finally the uncertainty of the analysis and limit of quantitation are discussed for specific examples. They primarily result from the interpretation of the chromatogram, manually placing the baseline and cuts for taking off extraneous components. Without previous enrichment, the limit of quantitation is between around 0.1 mg/kg for foods with a low fat content and 2.5 mg/kg for fats and oils. Degradation products from lignocellulosic materials receive increasing attention due to the continuously growing interest in their utilization. The inherent structural variance of lignocellulosics combined with the intricacy of lignocellulosic processing (e.g. pulping of wood and bleaching of cellulosic pulps) and the complexity of degradation processes occurring therein result in rather complex mixtures in the process streams and effluents that contain a large quantity of structurally different degradation products. This is true for most processing steps, but also for degradation reactions occurring during aging of lignocellulosic materials, such as paper, cellulosic tissue or textiles. In order to render such mixtures better analytically accessible than hitherto possible a CE-ESI-MS method was established for the simultaneous determination of aliphatic carboxylic acids from the degradation of (hemi)celluloses and aromatic compounds from lignin degradation. CE and ESI-MS parameters have been optimized towards sensitivity and good reproducibility. The method was tested in two real-world scenarios: the determination of major components in effluents from bleaching stages in the pulp and paper industry, and the analysis of degradation products in extracts of naturally aged papers. We developed a convenient method by coupling frontal elution paper chromatography with desorption corona beam ionization mass spectrometry (DCBI-MS) for rapid determination of chlorphenamine added in herbal medicines or dietary supplements. In this method, the ethanol extract of the herbal products was spotted directly onto an isosceles triangular filter paper sheet, and then the paper sheet was developed under strong elution condition with the sample zone migrating at the solvent front. The analyte was finally condensed at the V-shaped tip which could then be placed under the visible plasma beam of DCBI for ionization. The overall procedure took less than 5 min. The frontal elution paper chromatography on a triangular plate used in this work improved the signal intensity of chlorphenamine by 30-fold due to the analyte condensing at the tip and the reduction of the background suppression. Furthermore, the paper sheet also functioned as a filter in the analysis of solid or powder samples, which can increase the analytical throughput by omitting the step of centrifugation. The proposed method in current study was successfully applied in the determination of chlorphenamine in herbal medicines. Chlorphenamine was detected in four of the twelve types of herbal medicines examined in this study. The limit of detection was 200 ng/mL (2.0 ng absolute) in full-scan positive-ion mode and the linear range was from 5.0 μg/mL to 50 μg/mL with satisfactory linear coefficient (R(2) (the square of the correlation coefficient)=0.895). Good reproducibility was achieved with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 15.0% and the recoveries of chlorphenamine ranged from 84.3 to 90.6%., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The paper deals with the application of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) for the studies of paper degradation phenomena. The goal is to solve some of the technical problems connected with the calibration of multi-detector SEC system and to find the correlation between SEC and viscometric results of degree of polymerization of cellulose. The results gathered for the paper samples degraded by acidic air pollutant (NO(2)) are used as an example of SEC-MALLS application. From the correlation between intrinsic viscosities and absolute value of molecular masses obtained with SEC/MALLS (Multi Angle Laser Light Scattering) technique, Mark-Houwink coefficients for cellulose in cupri-ethylenediamine solution were determined. Thus obtained coefficients were used for the determination of viscometric degree of polymerization (molecular mass) of the aged samples. An excellent correlation was found between the chromatographic values of molecular masses obtained with SEC-UV/VIS detection and the viscometric ones utilizing the improved values of Mark-Houwink coefficients., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier B.V. An innovative green column-switching high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) technique was developed by coupling traditional and Pb(2+) ion-exclusion columns to study enzyme hydrolysis components of waste cellulosic biomass. Pure water was used as the mobile phase to separate neutral polar analytes in high salt content solution. The column-switching HPLC-RI was connected on-line to the immobilized enzyme reactor for successive on-line desalting and simultaneous analysis of six carbohydrates (cellobiose, glucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, and arabinose) in the hydrolysate of waste paper and waste tree branch by incorporating the heart-cut and the elution-time-difference techniques. Six internal standard calibration curves in the linear concentration range of 0-2,000 microg mL(-1) were prepared. Xylitol was used as the internal standard to give excellent linear correlation coefficients (0.9984-0.9999). The limits of detection and quantification for cellobiose, glucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, and arabinose varied between 0.12-4.88 and 0.40-16.3 microg mL(-1), respectively, with an accuracy of 90-102% and a precision of 0.1-7.8%. Lactic acidemia is commonly associated with severe diseases in pediatric patients. Quantitation of blood lactate and pyruvate is important for the diagnosis and clinical management. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method using dried blood spots (DBS) was developed and could be used for simultaneous quantification of blood lactate and pyruvate. The applicability of the developed method was tested and confirmed by the regression analysis between LC-MS/MS method and enzymatic assay. Lactate and pyruvate were extracted from DBS obtained from 580 full-term, 120 pre-term infants (gestations ranging from 24 to 36 weeks), and 65 patients with suspected lactic acidemia, with methanolic internal standard (IS) solutions of sodium L-lactate-(13)C(3) and pyruvate-(13)C(3). An API-2000 LC-MS/MS system with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was applied. The within-run and between-run precisions (CV%) were determined and the results were 1.9% and 3.9% for lactate (n=20) and 5.7% and 7.3% for pyruvate (n=20). The linearity of lactate (r=0.9986) and pyruvate (r=0.9973) based on the IS was excellent. The parameter r squared (r(2)) of linear regression between LC-MS/MS method and enzymatic assay was 0.9405 for lactate and 0.9447 for pyruvate, respectively, and the agreement between these methods was consistent and acceptable. The stability of lactate and pyruvate on DBS was also confirmed. The LC-MS/MS method we developed is a specific, sensitive, and reproducible method for measuring blood lactate and pyruvate concentrations. The use of DBS in this method makes it particularly attractive for pediatric patients.

The determination of perfluorooctanoate (PFO) in articles of commerce has become increasingly important to understand if treated products are a possible source of PFO. An LC-MS/MS method for the determination of PFO in paper and textile using a dual labeled 13C-PFOA internal standard was successfully developed and validated. Residues of PFO were determined using an isocratic, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with an ammonium acetate/methanol buffer. Ions monitored were 413 (parent) and 369 (daughter) for PFO and 415 (parent) and 370 (daughter) for dual labeled 13C-PFOA internal standard. As a precaution against ubiquitous PFO that occasionally occurs in mobile phase or instrument components, two Hypercarb cartridges (4 mm) were placed before the HPLC injector. Any PFO that was captured by the cartridges was removed before each injection by flushing the system with 100% methanol prior to equilibration with the isocratic mobile phase. Overall recovery and standard deviation over a 3 day validation regimen for samples (n=54-55) fortified with PFOA at 5, 50, and 200 ng g(-1) were 114+/-4.9% for textile and 110+/-7.6% for paper. The results also established a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 ng g(-1) in textile and 2 ng g(-1) in paper based upon S/N of the 5.0 ng g(-1) fortification versus the untreated paper and textile.

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) with Ru(bpy)3(2+) electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection system was established to the determination of contamination of banknotes with controlled drugs and a high efficiency on-column field-amplified sample stacking (FASS) technique was also optimized to increase the ECL intensity. The method was illustrated using heroin and cocaine, which are two typical and popular illicit drugs. Highest sample stacking was obtained when 0.01 mM acetic acid was chosen for sample dissolution with electrokinetical injection for 6 s at 17 kV. Under the optimized conditions: ECL detection at 1.2 V, separation voltage 10.0 kV, 20 mM phosphate-acetate (pH 7.2) as running buffer, 5 mM Ru(bpy)3(2+) with 50 mM phosphate-acetate (pH 7.2) in the detection cell, the standard curves were linear in the range of 7.50x10(-8) to 1.00x10(-5) M for heroin and 2.50x10(-7) to 1.00x10(-4) M for cocaine and detection limits of 50 nM for heroin and 60 nM for cocaine were achieved (S/N = 3), respectively. Relative standard derivations of the ECL intensity and the migration time were 3.50 and 0.51% for heroin and 4.44 and 0.12% for cocaine, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of heroin and cocaine on illicit drug contaminated banknotes without any damage of the paper currency. A baseline resolution for heroin and cocaine was achieved within 6 min.

A comprehensive method for the determination of four stilbene-type disulfonate and one distyrylbiphenyl-type fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) in paper materials (napkin and paper tissue) and infant clothes was developed. FWAs were extracted from paper material and cloth samples using a hot-water extraction, and the aqueous extracts were then preconcentrated with the newly developed Oasis WAX (mixed-mode of weak anion exchange and reversed-phase sorbent) solid-phase extraction cartridge. The analytes were unequivocal determined by ion pair chromatography coupled with negative electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS-MS), applying a di-n-hexyl-ammonium acetate (DHAA) as the ion-pairing reagent in mobile phase. Limits of quantitation (LOQ) were established between 0.2 and 0.9 ng/g in 2 g of samples. Recovery of five FWAs in spiked commercial samples was between 42 and 95% and RSD (n = 3) ranging from 2 to 11%. The method was finally applied to commercial samples, showing that two stilbene-type disulfonates were predominant FWAs detected in napkin and infant cloth samples.

A solid-phase microextraction (SPME) method has been developed for the determination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in paper and board samples. The analytical procedure involves direct extraction of PCP from paper and board samples and determination by gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD). Two kinds of commercially available fibres; 100 microm polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), apolar, and 85 microm polyacrylate (PA), quite polar, were evaluated to determine the extraction efficiency of pentachlorophenol. Parameters affecting the extraction process, such as temperature and time, were studied. Moreover, time of desorption and the effect of addition of salt were also investigated. The optimized procedure was applied to the analysis of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in five samples of virgin and recycled paper and board. The PCP content was determined by GC-ECD. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, it was compared with conventional extraction method with liquid-liquid extraction and derivatization. Detection limit of 0.015 microg/g for PCP in paper was achieved with a RSD of 14%.

The suitability of recycled paperboard packaging materials for direct food contact applications is a major area of investigation. Chemical contaminants (surrogates) partitioning between recycled paper packaging and foods may affect the safety and health of the consumer. The partition behavior of all possible organic compounds between cardboards and individual foodstuffs is difficult and too time consuming for being fully investigated. Therefore it may be more efficient to determine these partition coefficients indirectly through experimental determination of the partitioning behavior between cardboard samples and air. In this work, the behavior of organic pollutants present in a set of two paper and board samples intended to be in contact with foods was studied. Adsorption isotherms have been plotted and partition coefficients between paper and air have been calculated as a basis for the estimation of their migration potential into food. Values of partition coefficients (Kpaper/air) from 47 to 1207 were obtained at different temperatures. For the less volatile surrogates such as dibutyl phthalate and methyl stearate higher Kpaper/air values were obtained. The adsorption curves showed that the more volatile substances are partitioning mainly in air phase and increasing the temperature from 70 to 100 degrees C their concentrations in air (Cair) have almost doubled. The analysis of surrogates was performed with a method based on solvent extraction and gas chromatographic-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) quantification.

Open-vessel focused microwave (FMW) extraction with a purely aqueous carbonate solution was used for the extraction of chlorophenols from various solid matrices. After SPE on C18-bonded silica, the analytes were determined as such by LC-UV or, as their acetyl derivatives, by GC-ECD. The FMW aqueous extraction is efficient and rapid and no organic solvents are used. PCP was detected in several solid samples, with recoveries of 101-115% (RSD, 2-4%) relative to Soxhlet extraction. Similar recoveries were obtained for the other chlorophenols for spiked samples.

A non-destructive, fast and environmentally friendly procedure has been developed for cocaine determination in euro bank notes. Cocaine was extracted with 15 ml methanol by vortex agitation during 5 min. The extract was evaporated and reconstituted in 0.5 ml methanol. GC-MS-MS analysis was performed using as precursor ion m/z 182.2, with an excitation energy voltage of 1.60 eV, being the product ions measured m/z 150.2 and 82.0. A limit of detection of 0.15 ng per note and a repeatability of 6%, established from the relative standard deviation, of a 1 ng ml(-1) level, were achieved. Recoveries of 101+/-2 and 98+/-3% were obtained for samples spiked with 100 and 10 microg respectively. Results show that all the euro bank notes measured (16 samples) were contaminated with cocaine in the range between 1.25 and 889 microg. Two different contamination levels, high level (150-889 microg) and low one (1.25-77 microg) were found and it could be related with the direct or indirect contact with the drug.

Two low-volume solvent continuous extraction methods are applied to the extraction of paper matrices. In the methods reported here, a complex mixture of fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) and azo dyes (AZOs) used in paper materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs was extracted by using subcritical water extraction (SWE) and dynamic sonication-assisted solvent extraction (DSASE). Rationale for the work is based upon migration concerns of these groups of analytes from the packaging to the packaged items, thus compromising their subjective and/or objective quality. In SWE, sample was extracted in 21 min with 0.5 mL of water, whereas the DSASE method required 11 min and used 7 mL of water. DSASE was further developed by incorporating an organic modifier in order to change water polarity, thus improving extraction of moderately polar analytes. This way, modified-DSASE used a total organic volume of 0.9 mL which represents a reduction of 200 times in organic solvent consumption (200 mL versus approximately 1.0 mL) and 11 times in extraction time (2h versus 11 min) compared to the existing methods. SWE was able to extract only 9 out of 12 test analytes with average recoveries between 10 and 25% whereas modified-DSASE succeed in extracting all the target analytes with an average recovery of 89%. The analysis using size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) with multi-angle light scattering (MALS) and differential refractive index (DRI) detection of cellulose dissolved in lithium chloride/N,N-dimethylacetamide (LiCI/DMAc) is evaluated and compared to two other methods currently used for cellulose analysis. These are SEC with low-angle light scattering (LALS) and ultra-violet detection of cellulose derivatised to tricarbanilates (CTC), and viscometry in cadmium triethylene diamine dihydroxide (cadoxen). The cellulose source is Whatman No. 1 paper, unaged or artificially aged with a combination of heat and humidity. The values of the molar mass (Mr) averages of cellulose obtained with the different methods resulted quite different for both aged and unaged paper. SEC of cellulose in LiCl/DMAc provided the highest Mr averages values, followed by SEC of CTC, while viscometry yielded the lowest values. These differences were more or less pronounced depending on the initial degradation state of the paper. Several hypotheses are presented in order to explain these discrepancies and each method is discussed on the basis of its suitability to characterise the aging-induced degradation.

Hydrolytic degradation of cellulose was shown to take place during the activation procedure in distilled water during the dissolution procedure of cellulose samples from papers for size-exclusion chromatography analyses in the lithium chloride-N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) solution system. The use of dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide solution in the activation procedure prevents hydrolytic degradation of cellulose during the dissolution procedure, especially in the case of samples of aged papers with low pH. The use of the freeze-drying technique provides samples of cellulose ready-made for dissolution in lithium chloride-N,N-dimethylacetamide solution.

The surface energies of various inorganic fillers including kaolin clay, titanium dioxide, and talc were examined using inverse gas chromatography (IGC). In an earlier investigation that examined calcium carbonate fillers, dehydration by heating under a dry nitrogen purge had a substantial influence on the apolar (gammaS(LW)) and polar (gammaS(AB)) components of surface energy as measured using IGC. Using the same approach, the influence of such conditioning on several inorganic fillers used in papermaking were determined using preconditioning IGC from 100 to 300 degrees C, and sequential isothermal analysis at 100 degrees C. Results from IGC analysis of titanium dioxides (rutile and anatase) were similar to precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) for temperatures up to 200 degrees C. PCC was significantly more energetic after preconditioning at 300 degrees C, which may indicate the onset of significant thermal decomposition that titanium dioxides will not exhibit. Kaolin clay samples had relatively high apolar surface energy similar to that of the chalk samples. Calcination gave lower gammaS(LW) values that could not be accounted for by changes in the microporous structure. More likely the differences resulted from contamination of highly energetic surface sites with adsorbates other than water. Talc samples exhibited relatively high apolar surface energies that increased with preconditioning temperature. The results provided insight into the significance of water on the final adhesion properties of fillers in the sheet structure or coating layer.

Paper fiber was treated in a heterogeneous esterification reaction with four different fatty acids. This fiber was used to strengthen polyethylene (PE) composites. Modified and unmodified cellulose fiber was characterized with inverse gas chromatography. In previous work, characterization was also carried with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid-state NMR, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. Individual fibers were found to be covered with the corresponding esters (cellulose undecylenate, undecanoate, oleate, stearate) with partial degrees of substitution of the cellulose. Comparison of XPS and NMR results showed that the surface degree of substitution of the cellulose fiber was higher than for the bulk, showing that the esterification reaction was a surface phenomenon. The aim of this work was to acquire information on the surface characteristics of the fiber and to see whether it could be correlated to PE composite mechanical strength results. The conclusions are that polar probes seem to diffuse more into the fibers than the non-polar probes, as the non-polar component of the surface tension of the modified fiber is much lowered towards that of PE, while donor-acceptor characteristics are hardly changed by esterification. The ester with the lowest non-polar component of the surface energy, the oleate, also gives the composite with the best mechanical properties.

Three analytical methods were developed for the determination of toxic compounds in recirculating waters of a paper-recycling industry. Three main groups of compounds were considered: (i) wood extractives originated from the raw material; (ii) biocides added during the production process and (iii) surfactants and other adjuvants present in the formulates of these biocides. Wood extractives considered in this study included fatty and resin acids. They were analysed by liquid-liquid extraction using methyl tert.-butyl ether, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for previous formation of the respective trimethylsilyl esters. Water samples were also extracted with Oasis HLB (copolymer [poly(divinylbenzene-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone]) solid-phase extraction cartridges of 60 mg and analysed by liquid chromatography-electrospray mass spectrometry for the determination of additives and biocides. Using these two approaches levels up to 15 mg/l for total resin and fatty acids, 5 mg/l for alkylbenzene sulfonates and 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)benzotiazol, 100 microg/l for bisphenol A and 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilepropionamide, and 300 microg/l for nonylphenol ethoxycarboxylate were detected in process waters at different production treatment stages. These levels are of relevance since poor water quality affects the paper-recycling process, the primary water treatment process and eventually, the environmental water quality.
