This study examined longitudinally sequential pathways between parental socioeconomic status and immigrant children's school performance and depressive symptoms during adolescence, as well as educational attainment and self-rated health upon transitioning into young adulthood among three immigrant groups. Participants included 1522 immigrant youth (M age = 14 years) and their parents. The youth were assessed at three time points (1992, 1995, and 2002). The parents were assessed at time 2. The mediating effects of intergenerational transmission of educational expectations and parent-child conflict, and the moderating effects of parental school involvement were also examined. The findings showed that lower levels of parental school involvement combined with higher levels of parental educational expectations were associated with increased depressive symptoms in adolescence and diminished self-rated health in young adulthood among Asian youth composed of Chinese, Koreans, and Filipinos. For Latino youth from Mexico and Central America, intergenerational transmission of educational expectations mediated the effects of parental SES on youth's GPA in adolescence and educational attainment in young adulthood only among those who reported high levels of parental school involvement. Findings showed that family mechanisms operated differently across immigrant groups and contributed to variations in immigrant youth's adjustment outcomes in both adolescence and young adulthood. Previous research has found significant associations between family routines (e.g., time shared and family meals), parenting characteristics, and later adolescent health behaviors. In general, greater family interactions, parental monitoring, and more optimal parenting style have been associated with less alcohol use during adolescence. We expanded upon this work by examining effects of family and parenting characteristics on alcohol use and health behaviors during young adulthood. We also followed tenets of the Contextual Model of Parenting by examining the moderating effects of parenting style on the associations between parent/family practices and outcomes. Data came from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997. A total of 5419 youth were surveyed at 12-14 years of age, and then annually for the next 14 years; 4565 were surveyed at a 10 year follow-up and 4539 were examined at the 14 year follow-up (84% retention). Multivariate models, controlling for sex and race/ethnicity, indicated that, in general, family routines and parental knowledge in early adolescence were associated with healthier behaviors at both the 10-year and 14-follow-ups. Results also showed that the protective effects of parental knowledge and family routines were strongest in families characterized by and authoritative parenting style. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aftercare services have been suggested to improve the outcomes of youth who depart group homes. The purpose of this study was to collect views from social service agency leaders about the aftercare supports they believed were most important for youth departing group homes. This project used a survey method and gathered views from 38 agency leaders who were 28-66 years of age, with an average of 21 years of experience working with residential care programs in 23 states across the United States. Participants ranked seven support domains (i.e., family, education, mental health, relationships, physical health, safety, and independent living) and rated 56 specific aftercare supports based on importance for youth who were departing group homes and returning to their homes/schools prior to high school graduation. Results suggested family, safety, and mental health supports were the most important domains of support for aftercare. Specific aftercare items that were rated critically important included support for self-harm/suicidal thoughts, accessing mental health services, coping with trauma, and managing medication for behavior/mental health. Tables are provided for the complete list of 56 specific support ratings. The findings are summarized and limitations are discussed. We investigated the extent to which clinician-assigned diagnoses of emotional and behavioral disorders and clinicians’ perceptions of client change are consistent with structured measures of youth clinical functioning and parent/family characteristics within the context of usual care or “real world” psychotherapy. A total of 54 therapists from two publicly-funded youth outpatient mental health clinics and 128 youths and parents from the therapists’ combined caseloads were included in the study. Clinician-assigned diagnosis and youth and family demographics were collected at the initial visit, clinician-reported perceived client change was collected at 6-month follow-up, and structured measures of youth clinical functioning and parent/family characteristics were collected at both time points. Results indicate some overlap between clinician-assigned diagnosis, clinician-reported perceived client change, and structured measures of youth clinical functioning and parent/family characteristics after controlling for demographic factors. We assessed the utility of an empirically-derived classification system for youths with emotional and behavioral disorders in a system of care with a strong representation of juvenile delinquents. Eighty-seven youths served in a system of care were categorized by variables related to past history, current behavioral functioning, and current psychological functioning into four clinical clusters. We evaluated preliminary clinical outcomes after six months of interagency involvement for youths within each cluster and across the four clusters. Results indicated that youths in different clusters improved significantly in need-specific areas. Trends in our data indicated differential change in clinical outcomes across clusters. We discuss our findings within the context of emerging outcomes of youths involved in comprehensive community-based programs and consider implications for outcome research, treatment of juvenile delinquents, and mental health policy. Using data from the Integrated Database on Children and Family Services in Illinois, we examined factors associated with the length of psychiatric hospitalization of youths in state hospitals between July 1, 1987 and June 30, 1992. Univariate analysis indicated that those diagnosed with attention deficit, psychotic, and conduct disorder experienced longer hospitalizations. In contrast, youths diagnosed with depressive disorders, drug and alcohol disorders, and adjustment disorders had shorter hospitalizations. Youths receiving services from multiple sectors of the human service delivery system experienced longer hospitalizations. Youths living in communities with state hospital linked community-based mental health services had shorter hospitalizations. Males experienced longer hospitalizations than females and African American youths experienced longer hospitalizations than White youths. Hispanic youths experienced shorter stays than either White or African American youths. The proportional hazards model indicated that being female, a history of previous admissions, multiservice use, and dangerousness were all associated with the decreased likelihood of discharge. Psychotic, attention deficit, and bipolar disorders were also associated with a decreased likelihood of hospital discharge. Youths with depressive disorders and African Americans with psychotic disorders had an increased likelihood of discharge. Increased age was also associated with the increased likelihood of discharge.
