Historically, racial socialization (RS) literature has focused on the content and frequency of RS messages communicated between Black parents and youth. In an effort to examine the potential added benefit of receiving RS messages from non-parental agents, three hierarchical linear regressions were tested among a sample of Black youth (ages 14–21). Black youths' acquisition of protection and bicultural coping messages from parents were associated with their belief in racial protection messages along with select relevant covariates. Black youths' acquisition of protection and racial stereotyping messages from parental agents and racial stereotyping messages from non-parental agents were associated with their belief in racial stereotyping messages. Finally, Black youths' belief in bicultural coping messages were association with their acquisition of protection, racial stereotyping, and bicultural coping messages from parental agents and racial stereotyping and bicultural coping messages from non-parental agents. Findings underscore the enduring role parental and non-parental figures serve in Black youths' racial socialization experiences across ecological contexts. As such, future interventions and community-based programs should be oriented towards equipping parents and supports for Black youth (e.g., including multiracial families) with the competency to communicate racial pride and skillfully support Black children's management of racialized experiences. Extensive research, in Western countries, links parental mood and parenting styles with child outcomes including emotional and behavioural adjustment. However, the effects of cultural differences, particularly between Australia and Indonesia on such linkages have not been adequately addressed in the existing literature. This cross-cultural study aims to examine the relationship between perceived parental mood, parenting styles, and child emotional and behavioural adjustment among both Australian and Indonesian parents. Using an online survey, a total of 436 parents (125 Australian and 311 Indonesian parents) with at least one typically developing child between the age of 3 and 9 years participated in this descriptive, exploratory study. Results indicated that in comparison to Australian parents, Indonesian participants reported greater anxiety symptoms, lower levels of depression, and more use of an authoritarian style in parenting. Similar patterns in the associations of observed variables were found between different cultural groups. High levels of parental stress and less use of authoritative parenting were revealed to be predictors of child emotional and behavioural problems while the authoritative parenting style was the predictor for child competencies within both cultures. This study provides evidence for the inconsistency between cultural preference in parenting style and the predicted factors for child outcomes. Highlights: This is one of the few studies that directly compares parenting across a Western (Australian) and an Asian (Indonesian) culture. Despite cultural differences, the high use of authoritative parenting and low use of authoritarian parenting styles were associated with higher child competencies in both Australia and Indonesia parenting. Indonesian parents were more likely to use authoritarian parenting than Australian parents but also reported lower levels of depressive symptomatology. This suggests a cultural difference in the association between parenting style and depressive symptoms. Parent's poor parental moods (depression and anxiety) are consistently associated with parenting styles and child adjustment within Western cultures; however, the links are less clear for Asian countries potentially due to cultural acceptance of and high use of authoritarian parenting. Evidence-based parenting programs have shown efficacy across a range of contexts, however, the cultural fit of a program can affect program engagement and participation. Ensuring the acceptability of programs and strategies is essential prior to wider dissemination. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to assess the acceptability of Group Triple P with Brazilian parents. A cross-sectional design was used with a sample of convenience (n = 38 Brazilian parents) who had completed Triple P as a part of another study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from these parents in order to explore their perceptions of the program and its strategies. The quantitative outcomes revealed the participants found the strategies highly acceptable and highly useful and were moderately satisfied with the program. The most common barriers identified by parents to accessing the program were logistical (e.g., access to childcare, and competing work commitments) and emotional (e.g., shame for parents) rather than cultural barriers. A thematic analysis of qualitative responses revealed four major themes: recommendations for program implementation, cultural appropriateness, barriers to implementing Triple P and changes in parenting. Overall, the participants were very positive about Triple P and perceived the program to be consistent with the cultural values of Brazilian parents, however, some recommendations to improve cultural fit were noted. Highlights: Group Triple P was viewed as acceptable and useful by Brazilian parents. More research examining Triple P in Brazil is warranted. Barriers to access the program were investigated, these appear to be similar to other countries and not unique to Brazil. Objective: Play is crucial for healthy child development; yet, the time dedicated to free play during the pre-school years has decreased in both school and home environments. Parental beliefs influence the activities in which children engage in daily life; therefore, exploring these beliefs is a first step to understand possible reasons for the decreased frequency of free play. Instruments developed for this purpose are scarce and, to date, none of them is available in Spanish. We adapted and assessed the psychometric properties of the Perceptions of Play Scale (PPS) and developed the Spanish version of the instrument (i.e., PPS-S). Method: We followed Beaton and colleagues' Guidelines for the cross-cultural adaptation of self-report measures, which describes two stages, namely translation and adaptation of the instrument, and assessment of its psychometric properties. During the first stage, a panel of 5 experts developed the preliminary version of the PPS-S. This version of the scale was piloted in a sample of 28 early childhood educators and parents of preschool children, whose feedback informed the development of the final version of the instrument. During the second stage, 452 parents of pre-school children completed the PPS-S to assess its psychometric properties. Results: An Exploratory Factor analysis showed high to excellent reliabilities for the three PPS-S subscales and the complete questionnaire. The PPS-S is a valuable, culturally sensitive tool for exploring parental beliefs about three aspects of play (i.e., frequency, playful character, and academic contribution) and could contribute to studies to promote this activity in Chilean children. Objectives: Australian Child Protection practitioners who work with children from sub-Saharan African migrant backgrounds often face challenges when applying child protection laws and policies to address childrearing and parenting issues. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of cultural beliefs, values, attitudes and practices on childrearing practices within sub-Saharan African communities. Methods: The systematic review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Databases searched included Science Direct, ProQuest Central, Embase, EbescoHOST (Medline; PsychINFO; CINAHL; ERIC; SocINDEX; PsycARTICLES), Web of Science (SCI-EXPANDED; SSCI) and Google Scholar; the search dates were from January 2000 to December 2016. The studies were assessed using the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) and the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology guidelines (STROBE). The search strategy identified 2631 articles, of which 57 met the inclusion criteria for the review. Participants were children aged from three months old to seventeen years and adults aged eighteen years or older. Results: Data analysis resulted in 7 primary themes: Illness Conception, Traditional Beliefs and Health-seeking Behaviour; Fosterage and Community Responsibility; Family Dynamics; Discipline; Child Spirits and the Supernatural; Body Stimulation; and Female Genital Mutilation. Conclusion: Framed within the acculturation theory, the review identifies important factors that converge to provide insight into the specific caregiving context of sub-Saharan African families. It further makes clear that, for the most part, the childrearing practices of sub-Saharan African migrants who settle in Australia are influenced by their cultural values and norms. Objectives: Studies conducted on families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) indicate that the period following the child's diagnosis can be challenging, especially for immigrant families. Indeed, they tend to have additional difficulties in accessing and using ASD diagnosis and early intervention services. To date, few studies have contrasted the experiences of immigrant and native families. Method: During the period following their child's ASD diagnosis, 104 immigrant and Canadian-born mothers and fathers completed the Beach Center FQOL Scale and provided ratings of perceived support. Results: Immigrant families were less satisfied with their FQOL than Canadian-born parents, but no gender differences were observed. However, gender and immigration-status related patterns emerged with respect to the relative importance and satisfaction levels across dimensions of FQOL. Additionally, fewer immigrant families reported having access to external support, a predictor of FQOL, than Canadian families. Conclusion: Although no statistically significant gender differences emerged, patterns in the data suggest that each parent may benefit from different services. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of developing programs that take into account parents' gender and cultural background and provide means of developing external support networks. Objectives: Cross-informant agreement between parent-youth dyads has been the focus of extensive research, but youth from diverse cultures have received less attention. Cross-information agreement between Indigenous and non-Indigenous parent-youth dyads were compared.Method: A total of 152 parent-youth dyads, consisting of 29.6% Indigenous and 70.4% non-Indigenous, were contrasted on level of agreement using the Child Behavior Checklist and Youth Self-Report forms of the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment.Results: The overall level of agreement for the full sample (r = .41) was comparable to the extent literature. As predicted, externalizing difficulties were rated with significantly higher levels of agreement than internalizing difficulties (externalizing r = .51; internalizing r = .32). While age did not significantly moderate the levels of agreement, gender did show an effect with female youth reporting higher levels of problems than males. The most notable finding was the cultural effect on levels of agreement. The rate of cross-informant agreement for the Indigenous parent-youth dyads was significantly higher than the low to moderate agreement found for non-Indigenous pairs. Moreover, the level of cross-informant agreement between the externalizing and internalizing problem scales was similar for the Indigenous dyads (r = .59; r = .62, respectively), but was significantly different for the non-Indigenous dyads (r = .50; r = .19, respectively).Conclusions: This study highlights possible cultural differences in cross-informant agreement between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth and their parents [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of maternal attitude towards children's emotional expressiveness in Korean preschoolers' emotional understanding and psychosocial adjustment. Preschoolers ( N = 70) participated in an emotional understanding task comprised of identifying cartoon character's emotional reaction to particular emotion-eliciting situations. Maternal attitude towards children's emotional expressiveness, as well as teachers' rating of children's behavior problems and social competence were measured. Children's emotional understanding was negatively correlated with teacher-reported behavior problems and positively associated with social competence. In line with recent research on the socialization of emotional expressiveness, controlling maternal attitude towards children's positive emotional expressiveness was negatively correlated with teacher-reported behavior problems. Conversely, mothers' accepting attitude towards children's negative emotional expressiveness was also negatively correlated with behavior problems. Finally, maternal attitude toward children's positive emotional expressiveness moderated the relationship between emotional understanding ability and behavior problems and social competence. Such findings suggest that maternal attitude, particularly attitude regarding specific type of emotional expressiveness, is one of the key factors that may predict preschooler's psychosocial outcomes. The present study aimed to examine Turkish mothers' reactive parenting beliefs (reactive emotional appraisals, causal attributions, anticipated strategies, and underlying goals for their anticipated strategies) in response to children's aggressive and socially withdrawn behaviors. Participants included 84 mothers with preschool-aged children residing in Ankara, Turkey. Supporting our expectations, the results showed that the degree of mothers' negative emotional responses varied based on the child maladaptive behaviors. Moreover, mothers perceived aggressive behaviors as more temporary and contextually dependent, but intentional than withdrawn behaviors. More directive strategies and parent-centered goals were reported for aggression, whereas more indirect strategies and emphatic goals were reported for social withdrawal. Overall, the present study provided evidence that Turkish mothers' perceptions and evaluations of maladaptive behaviors may have universal characteristics as well as aspects that are particular to the Turkish socio-cultural context.
