The dramatic slowing down of relaxation dynamics of liquids approaching the glass transition remains a highly debated problem, where the crux of the puzzle resides in the elusive increase in the activation barrier ΔE(T) with decreasing temperature T. A class of theoretical frameworks—known as elastic models—attribute this temperature dependence to the variations of the liquid's macroscopic elasticity, quantified by the high-frequency shear modulus G∞(T). While elastic models find some support in a number of experimental studies, these models do not take into account the spatial structures, length scales, and heterogeneity associated with structural relaxation in supercooled liquids. Here, we propose and test the possibility that viscous slowing down is controlled by a mesoscopic elastic stiffness κ(T), defined as the characteristic stiffness of response fields to local dipole forces in the liquid's underlying inherent structures. First, we show that κ(T)—which is intimately related to the energy and length scales characterizing quasilocalized, nonphononic excitations in glasses—increases more strongly with decreasing T than the macroscopic inherent structure shear modulus G(T) [the glass counterpart of liquids' G∞(T)] in several computer liquids. Second, we show that the simple relation ΔE(T) ∝ κ(T) holds remarkably well for some computer liquids, suggesting a direct connection between the liquid's underlying mesoscopic elasticity and enthalpic energy barriers. On the other hand, we show that for other computer liquids, the above relation fails. Finally, we provide strong evidence that what distinguishes computer liquids in which the ΔE(T) ∝ κ(T) relation holds from those in which it does not is that the latter feature highly fragmented/granular potential energy landscapes, where many sub-basins separated by low activation barriers exist. It was recently shown that the real part of the frequency-dependent fluidity for several glass-forming liquids of different chemistry conforms to the prediction of the random barrier model (RBM) devised for ac electrical conduction in disordered solids [Bierwirth et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 248001 (2017)]. Inspired by these results, we introduce a crystallization-resistant modification of the Kob–Andersen binary Lennard-Jones mixture for which the results of extensive graphics-processing-unit-based molecular-dynamics simulations are presented. We find that the low-temperature mean-square displacement is fitted well by the RBM prediction, which involves no shape parameters. This finding highlights the challenge of explaining why a simple model based on hopping of non-interacting particles in a fixed random energy landscape with identical minima can reproduce the complex and highly cooperative dynamics of glass-forming liquids. This paper studies numerically the solid phase of a system of particles interacting by the exponentially repulsive pair potential, which is a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal at low densities and a body-centered cubic (bcc) crystal at higher densities [U. R. Pedersen et al., J. Chem. Phys. 150, 174501 (2019)]. Structure is studied via the pair-distribution function and dynamics via the velocity autocorrelation function and the phonon density of states. These quantities are evaluated along isotherms, isochores, and three isomorphs in both crystal phases. Isomorphs are traced out by integrating the density-temperature relation characterizing configurational adiabats, starting from state points in the middle of the fcc-bcc coexistence region. Good isomorph invariance of structure and dynamics is seen in both crystal phases, which is notable in view of the large density variations studied. This is consistent with the fact that the virial potential-energy correlation coefficient is close to unity in the entire fcc phase and in most of the bcc phase (basically below the re-entrant density). This paper determines the thermodynamic phase diagram of the EXP system of particles interacting by the purely repulsive exponential pair potential. The solid phase is face-centered cubic (fcc) at low densities and pressures. At higher densities and pressures, the solid phase is body-centered cubic (bcc) with a re-entrant liquid phase at the highest pressures simulated. The investigation first identifies the phase diagram at zero temperature at which the following four crystal structures are considered: fcc, bcc, hexagonal close packed, and cubic diamond. There is a T = 0 phase transition at pressure 2.651 × 10−3 with the thermodynamically stable structure being fcc below and bcc above this pressure. The densities of the two crystal structures at the phase transition are 1.7469 × 10−2 (fcc) and 1.7471 × 10−2 (bcc). At finite temperatures, the fcc–bcc, fcc-liquid, and bcc-liquid coexistence lines are determined by numerical integration of the Clausius–Clapeyron equation and validated by interface-pinning simulations at selected state points. The bcc-fcc phase transition is a weak first-order transition. The liquid-fcc–bcc triple point, which is determined by the interface-pinning method, has temperature 5.9 × 10−5 and pressure 2.5 × 10−6; the triple-point densities are 1.556 × 10−3 (liquid), 1.583 × 10−3 (bcc), and 1.587 × 10−3 (fcc). We present diffusion coefficient and shear viscosity data for the Lennard-Jones fluid along nine isochores above the critical density, each involving a temperature variation of roughly two orders of magnitude. The data are analyzed with respect to the Stokes-Einstein (SE) relation, which breaks down gradually at high temperatures. This is rationalized in terms of the fact that the reduced diffusion coefficient D ̃ and the reduced viscosity η ̃ are both constant along the system's lines of constant excess entropy (the isomorphs). As a consequence, D ̃ η ̃ is a function of T/TRef(ρ) in which T is the temperature, ρ is the density, and TRef(ρ) is the temperature as a function of the density along a reference isomorph. This paper continues the investigation of the exponentially repulsive EXP pair-potential system of Paper I [A. K. Bacher et al., J. Chem. Phys. 149, 114501 (2018)] with a focus on isomorphs in the low- temperature gas and liquid phases. As expected from the EXP system's strong virial potential-energy correlations, the reduced-unit structure and dynamics are isomorph invariant to a good approximation. Three methods for generating isomorphs are compared: the small-step method that is exact in the limit of small density changes and two versions of the direct-isomorph-check method that allows for much larger density changes. Results from the latter two approximate methods are compared to those of the small-step method for each of the three isomorphs generated by 230 one percent density changes, covering one decade of density variation. The recent theoretical prediction by Maimbourg and Kurchan [e-print arXiv:1603.05023 (2016)] that for regular pair-potential systems the virial potential-energy correlation coefficient increases towards unity as the dimension d goes to infinity is investigated for the standard 12-6 Lennard-Jones fluid. This is done by computer simulations for d = 2,3,4 going from the critical point along the critical isotherm/isochore to higher density/temperature. In both cases the virial potential-energy correlation coefficient increases significantly. For a given density and temperature relative to the critical point, with increasing number of dimension the Lennard-Jones system conforms better to the hidden-scale-invariance property characterized by high virial potential-energy correlations (a property that leads to the existence of isomorphs in the thermodynamic phase diagram, implying that it becomes effectively one-dimensional in regard to structure and dynamics). The present paper also gives the first numerical demonstration of isomorph invariance of structure and dynamics in four dimensions. Our findings emphasize the need for a universally applicable 1/d expansion in liquid-state theory; we conjecture that the systems known to obey hidden scale invariance in three dimensions are those for which the yet-to-be-developed 1/d expansion converges rapidly. The isomorph theory is reformulated by defining Roskilde-simple systems by the property that the order of the potential energies of configurations at one density is maintained when these are scaled uniformly to a different density. If the potential energy as a function of all particle coordinates is denoted by U(R), this requirement translates into U(Ra) < U(Rb) ⇒ U(ƛRa) < U(ƛRb). Isomorphs remain curves in the thermodynamic phase diagram along which structure, dynamics, and excess entropy are invariant, implying that the phase diagram is effectively one-dimensional with respect to many reduced-unit properties. In contrast to the original formulation of the isomorph theory, however, the density-scaling exponent is not exclusively a function of density and the isochoric heat capacity is not an exact isomorph invariant. A prediction is given for the latter quantity's variation along the isomorphs. Molecular dynamics simulations of the Lennard-Jones and Lennard-Jones Gaussian systems validate the new approach. Asphaltene and smaller aromatic molecules tend to form linear nanoaggregates in bitumen. Over the years bitumen undergoes chemical aging and during this process, the size of the nanoaggregate increases. This increase is associated with an increase in viscosity and brittleness of the bitumen, eventually leading to road deterioration. This paper focuses on understanding the mechanisms behind nanoaggregate size and stability. We used molecular dynamics simulations to quantify the probability of having a nanoaggregate of a given size in the stationary regime. To model this complicated behavior, we chose first to consider the simple case where only asphaltene molecules are counted in a nanoaggregate. We used a master equation approach and a related statistical mechanics model. The linear asphaltene nanoaggregates behave as a rigid linear chain. The most complicated case where all aromatic molecules are counted in a nanoaggregate is then discussed. This paper investigates two conjectures for calculating the density dependence of the density-scaling exponent γ of a single-component, pair-potential liquid with strong virial potential-energy correlations. The first conjecture gives an analytical expression for γ directly in terms of the pair potential. The second conjecture is a refined version of this involving the most likely nearestneighbor distance determined from the pair-correlation function. The conjectures are tested by simulations of three systems, one of which is the standard Lennard-Jones liquid. While both expressions give qualitatively correct results, the second is more accurate. In this third paper of the series, which started with Bailey et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 129, 184507 (2008); ibid. 129, 184508 (2008)], we continue the development of the theoretical understanding of strongly correlating liquids—those whose instantaneous potential energy and virial are more than 90% correlated in their thermal equilibrium fluctuations at constant volume. The existence of such liquids was detailed in previous work, which identified them, based on computer simulations, as a large class of liquids, including van der Waals liquids but not, e.g., hydrogen-bonded liquids. We here discuss the following: (1) the scaling properties of inverse power-law and extended inverse power-law potentials (the latter includes a linear term that “hides” the approximate scale invariance); (2) results from computer simulations of molecular models concerning out-of-equilibrium conditions; (3) ensemble dependence of the virial/potential-energy correlation coefficient; (4) connection to the Grüneisen parameter; and (5) interpretation of strong correlations in terms of the energy-bond formalism. This paper is the fourth in a series devoted to identifying and explaining the properties of strongly correlating liquids, i.e., liquids where virial and potential energy correlate better than 90% in their thermal equilibrium fluctuations in the NVT ensemble. For such liquids we here introduce the concept of “isomorphic” curves in the phase diagram. A number of thermodynamic, static, and dynamic isomorph invariants are identified. These include the excess entropy, the isochoric specific heat, reduced-unit static and dynamic correlation functions, as well as reduced-unit transport coefficients. The dynamic invariants apply for both Newtonian and Brownian dynamics. It is shown that after a jump between isomorphic state points the system is instantaneously in thermal equilibrium; consequences of this for generic aging experiments are discussed. Selected isomorph predictions are validated by computer simulations of the Kob–Andersen binary Lennard-Jones mixture, which is a strongly correlating liquid. The final section of the paper relates the isomorph concept to phenomenological melting rules, Rosenfeld’s excess entropy scaling, Young and Andersen’s approximate scaling principle, and the two-order parameter maps of Debenedetti and co-workers. This section also shows how the existence of isomorphs implies an “isomorph filter” for theories for the non-Arrhenius temperature dependence of viscous liquids’ relaxation time, and it explains isochronal superposition for strongly correlating viscous liquids. Time-reversible molecular dynamics algorithms with bond constraints are derived. The algorithms are stable with and without a thermostat and in double precision as well as in single-precision arithmetic. Time reversibility is achieved by applying a central-difference expression for the velocities in the expression for Gauss’ principle of least constraint. The imposed time symmetry results in a quadratic expression for the Lagrange multiplier. For a system of complex molecules with connected constraints the corresponding set of coupled quadratic equations is easily solved by a consecutive iteration scheme. The algorithms were tested on two models. One is a dumbbell model of Toluene, the other system consists of molecules with four connected constraints forming a triangle and a branch point of constraints. The equilibrium particle distributions and the mean-square particle displacements for the dumbbell model were compared to the corresponding functions obtained by GROMACS. We present a detailed analysis and discuss consequences of the strong correlations of the configurational parts of pressure and energy in their equilibrium fluctuations at fixed volume reported for simulations of several liquids in the previous paper [N. P. Bailey et al., J. Chem. Phys. 129, 184507 (2008)]. The analysis concentrates specifically on the single-component Lennard-Jones system. We demonstrate that the potential may be replaced, at fixed volume, by an effective power law but not simply because only short-distance encounters dominate the fluctuations. Indeed, contributions to the fluctuations are associated with the whole first peak of the radial distribution function, as we demonstrate by an eigenvector analysis of the spatially resolved covariance matrix. The reason the effective power law works so well depends crucially on going beyond single-pair effects and on the constraint of fixed volume. In particular, a better approximation to the potential includes a linear term, which contributes to the mean values of potential energy and virial, but little to their fluctuations, for density fluctuations which conserve volume. We also study in detail the zero temperature limit of the (classical) crystalline phase, where the correlation coefficient becomes very close, but not equal, to unity, in more than one dimension; in one dimension the limiting value is exactly unity. In the second half of the paper we consider four consequences of strong pressure-energy correlations: (1) analyzing experimental data for supercritical argon we find 96% correlation; (2) we discuss the particular significance acquired by the correlations for viscous van der Waals liquids approaching the glass transition: For strongly correlating viscous liquids knowledge of just one of the eight frequency-dependent thermoviscoelastic response functions basically implies knowledge of them all; (3) we reinterpret aging simulations of ortho-terphenyl carried out by Mossa et al. [Eur. Phys. J. B 30, 351 (2002)], showing their conclusions follow from the strongly correlating property; and (4) we briefly discuss the presence of the correlations (after appropriate time averaging) in model biomembranes, showing that significant correlations may be present even in quite complex systems. This paper argues that the viscosity of simple fluids at densities above that of the triple point is a specific function of temperature relative to the freezing temperature at the density in question. The proposed viscosity expression, which is arrived at in part by reference to the isomorph theory of systems with hidden scale invariance, describes computer simulations of the Lennard-Jones system as well as argon and methane experimental data and simulation results for an effective-pair-potential model of liquid sodium. An equilibrated model glass-forming liquid is studied by mapping successive configurations produced by molecular dynamics simulation onto a time series of inherent structures (local minima in the potential energy). Using this "inherent dynamics" approach we find direct numerical evidence for the long held view that below a crossover temperature, T[sub x], the liquid's dynamics can be separated into (i) vibrations around inherent structures and (ii) transitions between inherent structures [M. Goldstein, J. Chem. Phys. 51, 3728 (1969)], i.e., the dynamics become "dominated" by the potential energy landscape. In agreement with previous proposals, we find that T[sub x] is within the vicinity of the mode-coupling critical temperature T[sub c]. We further find that near T[sub x], transitions between inherent structures occur via cooperative, stringlike rearrangements of groups of particles moving distances substantially smaller than the average interparticle distance. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. Dynamical heterogeneity and the decoupling of diffusion and relaxation in a supercooled liquid is investigated via a time-dependent, four-point density correlation function. We show that the main contribution to the corresponding generalized susceptibility χ[sub 4](t) in a molecular dynamics simulation of a Lennard-Jones liquid arises from spatial correlations between temporarily localized ("caged") particles. By comparing χ[sub 4](t) with a generalized susceptibility χ[sub M](t) related to a correlation function for the squared particle displacements, we demonstrate a connection between dynamical heterogeneity and the decoupling of relaxation and diffusion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. Computer simulations show that liquids of molecules with harmonic intramolecular bonds may have "pseudoisomorphic" lines of approximately invariant dynamics in the thermodynamic phase diagram. We demonstrate that these lines can be identified by requiring scale invariance of the inherent-structure reduced-unit low-frequency vibrational spectrum evaluated for a single equilibrium configuration. This rationalizes why generalized excess-entropy scaling, density scaling, and isochronal superposition apply for many liquids with internal degrees of freedom.

The previous paper [A. A. Veldhorst et al., J. Chem. Phys. 141, 054904 (2014)] demonstrated that the isomorph theory explains the scaling properties of a liquid of flexible chains consisting of ten Lennard-Jones particles connected by rigid bonds. We here investigate the same model with harmonic bonds. The introduction of harmonic bonds almost completely destroys the correlations in the equilibrium fluctuations of the potential energy and the virial. According to the isomorph theory, if these correlations are strong a system has isomorphs, curves in the phase diagram along which structure, dynamics, and the excess entropy are invariant. The Lennard-Jones chain liquid with harmonic bonds does have curves in the phase diagram along which the structure and dynamics are invariant. The excess entropy is not invariant on these curves, which we refer to as "pseudoisomorphs." In particular, this means that Rosenfeld's excess-entropy scaling (the dynamics being a function of excess entropy only) does not apply for the Lennard-Jones chain with harmonic bonds.

The isomorph theory provides an explanation for the so-called power law density scaling which has been observed in many molecular and polymeric glass formers, both experimentally and in simulations. Power law density scaling (relaxation times and transport coefficients being functions of ρ(γ(S)), where ρ is density, T is temperature, and γ(S) is a material specific scaling exponent) is an approximation to a more general scaling predicted by the isomorph theory. Furthermore, the isomorph theory provides an explanation for Rosenfeld scaling (relaxation times and transport coefficients being functions of excess entropy) which has been observed in simulations of both molecular and polymeric systems. Doing molecular dynamics simulations of flexible Lennard-Jones chains (LJC) with rigid bonds, we here provide the first detailed test of the isomorph theory applied to flexible chain molecules. We confirm the existence of isomorphs, which are curves in the phase diagram along which the dynamics is invariant in the appropriate reduced units. This holds not only for the relaxation times but also for the full time dependence of the dynamics, including chain specific dynamics such as the end-to-end vector autocorrelation function and the relaxation of the Rouse modes. As predicted by the isomorph theory, jumps between different state points on the same isomorph happen instantaneously without any slow relaxation. Since the LJC is a simple coarse-grained model for alkanes and polymers, our results provide a possible explanation for why power-law density scaling is observed experimentally in alkanes and many polymeric systems. The theory provides an independent method of determining the scaling exponent, which is usually treated as an empirical scaling parameter.

We derive exact results for the rate of change of thermodynamic quantities, in particular, the configurational specific heat at constant volume, CV, along configurational adiabats (curves of constant excess entropy Sex). Such curves are designated isomorphs for so-called Roskilde liquids, in view of the invariance of various structural and dynamical quantities along them. The slope of the isomorphs in a double logarithmic representation of the density-temperature phase diagram, γ, can be interpreted as one third of an effective inverse power-law potential exponent. We show that in liquids where γ increases (decreases) with density, the contours of CV have smaller (larger) slope than configurational adiabats. We clarify also the connection between γ and the pair potential. A fluctuation formula for the slope of the CV-contours is derived. The theoretical results are supported with data from computer simulations of two systems, the Lennard-Jones fluid, and the Girifalco fluid. The sign of dγ∕dρ is thus a third key parameter in characterizing Roskilde liquids, after γ and the virial-potential energy correlation coefficient R. To go beyond isomorph theory we compare invariance of a dynamical quantity, the self-diffusion coefficient, along adiabats and CV-contours, finding it more invariant along adiabats.

We investigate the accuracy of the expression of Rosenfeld and Tarazona (RT) for the excess isochoric heat capacity, C(V)(ex)∝T(-2/5), for 18 model liquids. Previous investigations have reported no unifying features of breakdown for the RT expression. Here, liquids with different stoichiometric composition, molecular topology, chemical interactions, degree of undercooling, and environment are investigated. The RT expression is a better approximation for liquids with strong correlations between equilibrium fluctuations of virial and potential energy, i.e., "Roskilde-simple" liquids [T. S. Ingebrigtsen, T. B. Schrøder, and J. C. Dyre, Phys. Rev. X 2, 011011 (2012)]. This observation holds even for molecular liquids under severe nanoscale confinement which does not follow from the original RT bulk hard-sphere fluid perturbation theory arguments. The density dependence of the specific heat is predicted from the isomorph theory for Roskilde-simple liquids, which in combination with the RT expression provides a complete description of the specific heat's density and temperature dependence.

We study chemical aging in "Cooee bitumen" using molecular dynamic simulations. This model bitumen is composed of four realistic molecule types: saturated hydrocarbon, resinous oil, resin, and asphaltene. The aging reaction is modelled by the chemical reaction: "2 resins → 1 asphaltene." Molecular dynamic simulations of four bitumen compositions, obtained by a repeated application of the aging reaction, are performed. The stress autocorrelation function, the fluid structure, the rotational dynamics of the plane aromatic molecules, and the diffusivity of each molecule are determined for the four different compositions. The aging reaction causes a significant dynamics slowdown, which is correlated to the aggregation of asphaltene molecules in larger and dynamically slower nanoaggregates. Finally, a detailed description of the role of each molecule types in the aggregation and aging processes is given.

Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the thermodynamic, structural, and dynamical properties of the single-component Lennard-Jones and the Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones liquids. Both systems are known to have strong correlations between equilibrium thermal fluctuations of virial and potential energy. Such systems have good isomorphs (curves in the thermodynamic phase diagram along which structural, dynamical, and some thermodynamic quantities are invariant when expressed in reduced units). The SLLOD equations of motion were used to simulate Couette shear flows of the two systems. We show analytically that these equations are isomorph invariant provided the reduced strain rate is fixed along the isomorph. Since isomorph invariance is generally only approximate, a range of strain rates were simulated to test for the predicted invariance, covering both the linear and nonlinear regimes. For both systems, when represented in reduced units the radial distribution function and the intermediate scattering function are identical for state points that are isomorphic. The strain-rate dependent viscosity, which exhibits shear thinning, is also invariant along an isomorph. Our results extend the isomorph concept to the non-equilibrium situation of a shear flow, for which the phase diagram is three dimensional because the strain rate defines a third dimension.

We show that for any liquid or solid with strong correlation between its NVT virial and potential-energy equilibrium fluctuations, the temperature is a product of a function of excess entropy per particle and a function of density, T = f(s)h(ρ). This implies that (1) the system's isomorphs (curves in the phase diagram of invariant structure and dynamics) are described by h(ρ)/T = Const., (2) the density-scaling exponent is a function of density only, and (3) a Grüneisen-type equation of state applies for the configurational degrees of freedom. For strongly correlating atomic systems one has h(ρ) = ∑(n)C(n)ρ(n/3) in which the only non-zero terms are those appearing in the pair potential expanded as ν(r) = ∑(n)ν(n)r(-n). An algorithm is derived for computer simulation of geodesics on the constant-potential-energy hypersurface of a system of N classical particles. First, a basic time-reversible geodesic algorithm is derived by discretizing the geodesic stationarity condition and implementing the constant-potential-energy constraint via standard Lagrangian multipliers. The basic NVU algorithm is tested by single-precision computer simulations of the Lennard-Jones liquid. Excellent numerical stability is obtained if the force cutoff is smoothed and the two initial configurations have identical potential energy within machine precision. Nevertheless, just as for NVE algorithms, stabilizers are needed for very long runs in order to compensate for the accumulation of numerical errors that eventually lead to "entropic drift" of the potential energy towards higher values. A modification of the basic NVU algorithm is introduced that ensures potential-energy and step-length conservation; center-of-mass drift is also eliminated. Analytical arguments confirmed by simulations demonstrate that the modified NVU algorithm is absolutely stable. In the companion paper [T. S. Ingebrigtsen, S. Toxvaerd, O. J. Heilmann, T. B. Schrøder, and J. C. Dyre, "NVU dynamics. I. Geodesic motion on the constant-potential-energy hypersurface," J. Chem. Phys. (in press)] an algorithm was developed for tracing out a geodesic curve on the constant-potential-energy hypersurface. Here, simulations of NVU dynamics are compared to results for four other dynamics, both deterministic and stochastic. First, NVU dynamics is compared to the standard energy-conserving Newtonian NVE dynamics by simulations of the Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones liquid, its WCA version (i.e., with cut-off's at the pair potential minima), and the Lennard-Jones Gaussian liquid. We find identical results for all quantities probed: radial distribution functions, incoherent intermediate scattering functions, and mean-square displacement as function of time. Arguments are presented for the equivalence of NVU and NVE dynamics in the thermodynamic limit; in particular, to leading order in 1∕N these two dynamics give identical time-autocorrelation functions. In the final part of the paper, NVU dynamics is compared to Monte Carlo dynamics, to a diffusive dynamics of small-step random walks on the constant-potential-energy hypersurface, and to Nosé-Hoover NVT dynamics. If time is scaled for the two stochastic dynamics to make single-particle diffusion constants identical to that of NVE dynamics, the simulations show that all five dynamics are equivalent at low temperatures except at short times., (© 2011 American Institute of Physics)

This series of papers is devoted to identifying and explaining the properties of strongly correlating liquids, i.e., liquids with more than 90% correlation between their virial W and potential energy U fluctuations in the NVT ensemble. Paper IV [N. Gnan et al., J. Chem. Phys. 131, 234504 (2009)] showed that strongly correlating liquids have "isomorphs," which are curves in the phase diagram along which structure, dynamics, and some thermodynamic properties are invariant in reduced units. In the present paper, using the fact that reduced-unit radial distribution functions are isomorph invariant, we derive an expression for the shapes of isomorphs in the WU phase diagram of generalized Lennard-Jones systems of one or more types of particles. The isomorph shape depends only on the Lennard-Jones exponents; thus all isomorphs of standard Lennard-Jones systems (with exponents 12 and 6) can be scaled onto a single curve. Two applications are given. One tests the prediction that the solid-liquid coexistence curve follows an isomorph by comparing to recent simulations by Ahmed and Sadus [J. Chem. Phys. 131, 174504 (2009)]. Excellent agreement is found on the liquid side of the coexistence curve, whereas the agreement is less convincing on the solid side. A second application is the derivation of an approximate equation of state for generalized Lennard-Jones systems by combining the isomorph theory with the Rosenfeld-Tarazona expression for the temperature dependence of the potential energy on isochores. It is shown that the new equation of state agrees well with simulations.

Recently, the supercooled Wahnstrom binary Lennard-Jones mixture was partially crystallized into MgZn(2) phase crystals in lengthy molecular dynamics simulations. We present molecular dynamics simulations of a modified Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones mixture that also crystallizes in lengthy simulations here, however, by forming pure fcc crystals of the majority component. The two findings motivate this paper that gives a general thermodynamic and kinetic treatment of the stability of supercooled binary mixtures, emphasizing the importance of negative mixing enthalpy whenever present. The theory is used to estimate the crystallization time in a Kob-Andersen mixture from the crystallization time in a series of related systems. At T=0.40 we estimate this time to be 5x10(7) time units ( approximately 0.1 ms). A new binary Lennard-Jones mixture is proposed that is not prone to crystallization and faster to simulate than the two standard binary Lennard-Jones mixtures. This is obtained by removing the like-particle attractions by switching to Weeks-Chandler-Andersen type potentials, while maintaining the unlike-particle attraction.

We show that a number of model liquids at fixed volume exhibit strong correlations between equilibrium fluctuations of the configurational parts of (instantaneous) pressure and energy. We present detailed results for 13 systems, showing in which systems these correlations are significant. These include Lennard-Jones liquids (both single- and two-component) and several other simple liquids, neither hydrogen-bonding liquids such as methanol and water, nor the Dzugutov liquid, which has significant contributions to pressure at the second nearest neighbor distance. The pressure-energy correlations, which for the Lennard-Jones case are shown to also be present in the crystal and glass phases, reflect an effective inverse power-law potential dominating fluctuations, even at zero and slightly negative pressure. An exception to the inverse power-law explanation is a liquid with hard-sphere repulsion and a square-well attractive part, where a strong correlation is observed, but only after time averaging. The companion paper [N. P. Bailey et al., J. Chem. Phys. 129, 184508 (2008)] gives a thorough analysis of the correlations, with a focus on the Lennard-Jones liquid, and a discussion of some experimental and theoretical consequences.

Thermoviscoelastic linear-response functions are calculated from the master equation describing viscous liquid inherent dynamics. From the imaginary parts of the frequency-dependent isobaric specific heat, isothermal compressibility, and isobaric thermal expansion coefficient, we define a "linear dynamic Prigogine-Defay ratio" LambdaTp(omega) with the property that if LambdaTp(omega)=1 at one frequency, then LambdaTp(omega) is unity at all frequencies. This happens if and only if there is a single-order-parameter description of the thermoviscoelastic linear responses via an order parameter (which may be nonexponential in time). Generalizations to other cases of thermodynamic control parameters than temperature and pressure are also presented.
