The search for new superhydrides, promising materials for both hydrogen storage and high temperature superconductivity, made great progress, thanks to atomistic simulations and Crystal Structure Prediction (CSP) algorithms. When they are combined with Density Functional Theory (DFT), these methods are highly reliable and often match a great part of the experimental results. However, systems of increasing complexity (number of atoms and chemical species) become rapidly challenging as the number of minima to explore grows exponentially with the number of degrees of freedom in the simulation cell. An efficient sampling strategy preserving a sustainable computational cost then remains to be found. We propose such a strategy based on an active-learning process where machine learning potentials and DFT simulations are jointly used, opening the way to the discovery of complex structures. As a proof of concept, this method is applied to the exploration of tin crystal structures under various pressures. We showed that the α phase, not included in the learning process, is correctly retrieved, despite its singular nature of bonding. Moreover, all the expected phases are correctly predicted under pressure (20 and 100 GPa), suggesting the high transferability of our approach. The method has then been applied to the search of yttrium superhydrides (YH x ) crystal structures under pressure. The YH 6 structure of space group Im-3m is successfully retrieved. However, the exploration of more complex systems leads to the appearance of a large number of structures. The selection of the relevant ones to be included in the active learning process is performed through the analysis of atomic environments and the clustering algorithm. Finally, a metric involving a distance based on x-ray spectra is introduced, which guides the structural search toward experimentally relevant structures. The global process (active-learning and new selection methods) is finally considered to explore more complex and unknown YH x phases, unreachable by former CSP algorithms. New complex phases are found, demonstrating the ability of our approach to push back the exponential wall of complexity related to CSP.

First-principles electronic structure calculations are now accessible to a very large community of users across many disciplines, thanks to many successful software packages, some of which are described in this special issue. The traditional coding paradigm for such packages is monolithic, i.e., regardless of how modular its internal structure may be, the code is built independently from others, essentially from the compiler up, possibly with the exception of linear-algebra and message-passing libraries. This model has endured and been quite successful for decades. The successful evolution of the electronic structure methodology itself, however, has resulted in an increasing complexity and an ever longer list of features expected within all software packages, which implies a growing amount of replication between different packages, not only in the initial coding but, more importantly, every time a code needs to be re-engineered to adapt to the evolution of computer hardware architecture. The Electronic Structure Library (ESL) was initiated by CECAM (the European Centre for Atomic and Molecular Calculations) to catalyze a paradigm shift away from the monolithic model and promote modularization, with the ambition to extract common tasks from electronic structure codes and redesign them as open-source libraries available to everybody. Such libraries include "heavy-duty" ones that have the potential for a high degree of parallelization and adaptation to novel hardware within them, thereby separating the sophisticated computer science aspects of performance optimization and re-engineering from the computational science done by, e.g., physicists and chemists when implementing new ideas. We envisage that this modular paradigm will improve overall coding efficiency and enable specialists (whether they be computer scientists or computational scientists) to use their skills more effectively and will lead to a more dynamic evolution of software in the community as well as lower barriers to entry for new developers. The model comes with new challenges, though. The building and compilation of a code based on many interdependent libraries (and their versions) is a much more complex task than that of a code delivered in a single self-contained package. Here, we describe the state of the ESL, the different libraries it now contains, the short- and mid-term plans for further libraries, and the way the new challenges are faced. The ESL is a community initiative into which several pre-existing codes and their developers have contributed with their software and efforts, from which several codes are already benefiting, and which remains open to the community.

abinit is probably the first electronic-structure package to have been released under an open-source license about 20 years ago. It implements density functional theory, density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT), many-body perturbation theory (GW approximation and Bethe-Salpeter equation), and more specific or advanced formalisms, such as dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and the "temperature-dependent effective potential" approach for anharmonic effects. Relying on planewaves for the representation of wavefunctions, density, and other space-dependent quantities, with pseudopotentials or projector-augmented waves (PAWs), it is well suited for the study of periodic materials, although nanostructures and molecules can be treated with the supercell technique. The present article starts with a brief description of the project, a summary of the theories upon which abinit relies, and a list of the associated capabilities. It then focuses on selected capabilities that might not be present in the majority of electronic structure packages either among planewave codes or, in general, treatment of strongly correlated materials using DMFT; materials under finite electric fields; properties at nuclei (electric field gradient, Mössbauer shifts, and orbital magnetization); positron annihilation; Raman intensities and electro-optic effect; and DFPT calculations of response to strain perturbation (elastic constants and piezoelectricity), spatial dispersion (flexoelectricity), electronic mobility, temperature dependence of the gap, and spin-magnetic-field perturbation. The abinit DFPT implementation is very general, including systems with van der Waals interaction or with noncollinear magnetism. Community projects are also described: generation of pseudopotential and PAW datasets, high-throughput calculations (databases of phonon band structure, second-harmonic generation, and GW computations of bandgaps), and the library libpaw. abinit has strong links with many other software projects that are briefly mentioned.

The conformational flexibility of the expanded porphyrins allows them to achieve different topologies with distinct aromaticities and nonlinear optical properties (NLOP). For instance, it is possible to switch between Möbius and Hückel topologies applying only small changes in the external conditions or in the structure of the ring. In this work, we evaluate the electronic and vibrational contributions to static and dynamic NLOP of the Hückel and Möbius conformers of A,D-di-p-benzi[28]hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1) synthesized by Latos-Grażyński and co-workers [Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 46, 7869 (2007)]. Calculations are performed at the HF, M052X, and CAM-B3LYP levels using the 6-31G, 6-311G(d), and 6-31+G(d) basis sets. Our results conclude that M052X∕6-31G and CAM-B3LYP/6-31G methods provide a correct qualitative description of the electronic and vibrational contributions for the NLOP of expanded porphyrins. The studied systems show high NLOP with large differences between the Möbius and Hückel conformations (around 1 × 10(6) a.u. for γ). The obtained results indicate that the expanded porphyrins are promising systems to manufacture Hückel-to-Möbius topological switches.

The vibrational configuration interaction method used to obtain static vibrational (hyper)polarizabilities is extended to dynamic nonlinear optical properties in the infinite optical frequency approximation. Illustrative calculations are carried out on H(2)O and NH(3). The former molecule is weakly anharmonic while the latter contains a strongly anharmonic umbrella mode. The effect on vibrational (hyper)polarizabilities due to various truncations of the potential energy and property surfaces involved in the calculation are examined.

A hardness based similarity index for studying the quantum similarity for atoms is analyzed. The investigation of hardness and Fukui functions of atoms leads to the construction of a quantum similarity measure, which can be interpreted as a quantified comparison of chemical reactivity of atoms. Evaluation of the new measure reveals periodic tendencies throughout Mendeleev's table. Moreover on the diagonal the global hardness was recovered. Considering a corresponding quantum similarity index reveals that renormalization of the measure can mask periodic patterns. The hardness was calculated for atoms with nuclear charge 3

The weight of the energetic components (electronic kinetic, electron-nucleus and electron-electron Coulombic, and correlation energies) of the ionization potential, electron affinity, chemical potential, and global hardness is evaluated and contrasted with the energetic components of the hardness kernel and the experimental values of these properties for 40 systems. The contrast of the hardness terms obtained from finite difference and hardness kernel gives some insight on the possible implications to differentiate the electronic energy with respect to the number electrons or the electron density.

A variational approach for reliably calculating vibrational linear and nonlinear optical properties of molecules with large electrical and/or mechanical anharmonicity is introduced. This approach utilizes a self-consistent solution of the vibrational Schrodinger equation for the complete field-dependent potential-energy surface and, then, adds higher-level vibrational correlation corrections as desired. An initial application is made to static properties for three molecules of widely varying anharmonicity using the lowest-level vibrational correlation treatment (i.e., vibrational Møller-Plesset perturbation theory). Our results indicate when the conventional Bishop-Kirtman perturbation method can be expected to break down and when high-level vibrational correlation methods are likely to be required. Future improvements and extensions are discussed.

Our new simple method for calculating accurate Franck-Condon factors including nondiagonal (i.e., mode-mode) anharmonic coupling is used to simulate the C2H4+X2B3u<--C2H4X1A(g) band in the photoelectron spectrum. An improved vibrational basis set truncation algorithm, which permits very efficient computations, is employed. Because the torsional mode is highly anharmonic it is separated from the other modes and treated exactly. All other modes are treated through the second-order perturbation theory. The perturbation-theory corrections are significant and lead to a good agreement with experiment, although the separability assumption for torsion causes the C2D4 results to be not as good as those for C2H4. A variational formulation to overcome this circumstance, and deal with large anharmonicities in general, is suggested.

In the present work, we have computed the energy and hardness profiles for a series of inter and intramolecular conformational changes at several levels of calculation. All processes studied have in common the fact that the choice of a weak methodology or a poor basis set results in the presence of spurious stationary points in the energy profile. At variance with the energy profiles, the hardness profiles calculated as the difference between the vertical ionization potential and electron affinity always show the correct number of stationary points independently of the basis set and methodology used. For this reason, we have concluded that hardness profiles can be used to check the reliability of the energy profiles for those chemical systems that, because of their size, cannot be treated with high level ab initio methods.

Using three typical pi-conjugated molecules (1,3,5-hexatriene, 1-formyl-6-hydroxyhexa-1,3,5- triene, and 1,1-diamino-6,6-dinitrohexa-1,3,5-triene) we investigate the level of ab initio theory necessary to produce reliable values for linear and nonlinear optical properties, with emphasis on the vibrational contributions that are known to be important or potentially important. These calculations are made feasible by employing field-induced coordinates in combination with a finite field procedure. For many, but not all, purposes the MP2/6-31+G(d) level is adequate. Based on our results the convergence of the usual perturbation treatment for vibrational anharmonicity was examined.
