Resonance Raman spectroscopy has long been established as one of the most sensitive techniques for detection, structure characterization, and probing the excited-state dynamics of biochemical systems. However, the analysis of resonance Raman spectra is much facilitated when measurements are accompanied by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations that are expensive for large biomolecules. In this work, resonance Raman spectra are therefore computed with the Density Functional Tight-Binding (DFTB) method in the time-dependent excited-state gradient approximation. To test the accuracy of the tight-binding approximations, this method is first applied to typical resonance Raman benchmark molecules, such as β-carotene, and compared to results obtained with pure and range-separated exchange-correlation functionals. We then demonstrate the efficiency of the approach by considering a computationally challenging heme variation. Overall, we find that the vibrational frequencies and excited-state properties (energies and gradients) that are needed to simulate the spectra are reasonably accurate and suitable for interpretation of experiments. We can therefore recommend DFTB as a fast computational method to interpret resonance Raman spectra.

We employed an explicit expression for the dispersion (D) energy in conjunction with Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory and frozen-density embedding (FDE) to calculate interaction energies between DNA base pairs and a selected set of amino acid pairs in the hydrophobic core of a small protein Rubredoxin. We use this data to assess the accuracy of an FDE-D approach for the calculation of intermolecular interactions. To better analyze the calculated interaction energies we furthermore propose a new energy decomposition scheme that is similar to the well-known KS bond formation analysis [F. M. Bickelhaupt and E. J. Baerends, Rev. Comput. Chem. 15, 1 (2000)], but differs in the electron densities used to define the bond energy. The individual subsystem electron densities of the FDE approach sum to the total electron density which makes it possible to define bond energies in terms of promotion energies and an explicit interaction energy. We show that for the systems considered only a few freeze-and-thaw cycles suffice to reach convergence in these individual bond energy components, illustrating the potential of FDE-D as an efficient method to calculate intermolecular interactions.

In this article, we present a consistent derivation of a density functional theory (DFT) based embedding method which encompasses wave-function theory-in-DFT (WFT-in-DFT) and the DFT-based subsystem formulation of response theory (DFT-in-DFT) by Neugebauer [J. Neugebauer, J. Chem. Phys. 131, 084104 (2009)] as special cases. This formulation, which is based on the time-averaged quasi-energy formalism, makes use of the variation Lagrangian techniques to allow the use of non-variational (in particular: coupled cluster) wave-function-based methods. We show how, in the time-independent limit, we naturally obtain expressions for the ground-state DFT-in-DFT and WFT-in-DFT embedding via a local potential. We furthermore provide working equations for the special case in which coupled cluster theory is used to obtain the density and excitation energies of the active subsystem. The frozen-density embedding (FDE) scheme [Wesolowski and Warshel, J. Phys. Chem. 97, 8050 (1993)] relies on the use of approximations for the kinetic-energy component v(T)[rho(1),rho(2)] of the embedding potential. While with approximations derived from generalized-gradient approximation kinetic-energy density functional weak interactions between subsystems such as hydrogen bonds can be described rather accurately, these approximations break down for bonds with a covalent character. Thus, to be able to directly apply the FDE scheme to subsystems connected by covalent bonds, improved approximations to v(T) are needed. As a first step toward this goal, we have implemented a method for the numerical calculation of accurate references for v(T). We present accurate embedding potentials for a selected set of model systems, in which the subsystems are connected by hydrogen bonds of various strength (water dimer and F-H-F(-)), a coordination bond (ammonia borane), and a prototypical covalent bond (ethane). These accurate potentials are analyzed and compared to those obtained from popular kinetic-energy density functionals.

We have assessed the accuracy of a representative set of currently available approximate kinetic-energy functionals used within the frozen-density embedding scheme for the NgAuF (Ng=Ar, Kr, Xe) molecules, which we partitioned into a Ng and a AuF subsystem. Although it is weak, there is a covalent interaction between these subsystems which represents a challenge for this subsystem density functional theory approach. We analyzed the effective-embedding potentials and resulting electron density distributions and provide a quantitative analysis of the latter from dipole moment differences and root-mean-square errors in the density with respect to the supermolecular Kohn-Sham density functional theory reference calculation. Our results lead to the conclusion that none of the tested approximate kinetic-energy functionals performs well enough to describe the bond between the noble gas and gold adequately. This observation contributes to the growing evidence that the current procedure to obtain approximate kinetic-energy functionals by reparametrizing functionals obtained via the "conjointness" hypothesis of Lee, Lee, and Parr [Phys. Rev. A 44, 768 (1991)] is insufficient to treat metal-ligand interactions with covalent character.

Quantum-mechanical methods that are both computationally fast and accurate are not yet available for electronic excitations having charge transfer character. In this work, we present a significant step forward towards this goal for those charge transfer excitations that take place between non-covalently bound molecules. In particular, we present a method that scales linearly with the number of non-covalently bound molecules in the system and is based on a two-pronged approach: The molecular electronic structure of broken-symmetry charge-localized states is obtained with the frozen density embedding formulation of subsystem density-functional theory; subsequently, in a post-SCF calculation, the full-electron Hamiltonian and overlap matrix elements among the charge-localized states are evaluated with an algorithm which takes full advantage of the subsystem DFT density partitioning technique. The method is benchmarked against coupled-cluster calculations and achieves chemical accuracy for the systems considered for intermolecular separations ranging from hydrogen-bond distances to tens of Ångstroms. Numerical examples are provided for molecular clusters comprised of up to 56 non-covalently bound molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extension of a relativistic double group configuration interaction (CI) formalism to the use of 2- and 4-spinors is presented. We first elucidate the theoretical aspects of the formalism that is needed to work with spinors that are optimized with a Hartree-Fock scheme that includes spin-orbit coupling. We then describe a new general implementation for the computation of sigma vectors and n-particle density matrices that occur in direct CI algorithms. Sample calculations of the spin-orbit splitting in atoms with one particle or hole in an otherwise closed shell configuration ℓ[SUP1] (ℓ = 1,2,3) and molecules containing such atoms illustrate the advantage of treating this effect in a basis of true spinors rather than in a basis of scalar relativistic orbitals as is conventionally done.
