Abstract

Aspirin can be used to show chemical principles in a high school chemistry class. Methods students can easily use to synthesize and characterize aspirin are presented. Hydrolysis of aspirin can help introduce kinetics, and coordination chemistry, or chelation, can be seen in the preparation and characterization of the copper complexes of aspirin and salicylic acid.

Abstract

The synthesis and kinetics study of trans-dichlorotetraamminecobalt(III)chloride is an excellent exercise for undergraduate chemistry students. The synthesis can be observed using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. Conductivity changes can be monitored for kinetics information. Experiment procedures are included.

Abstract

Cobalt(III) complexes have been used in the undergraduate inorganic laboratory to demonstrate various techniques in coordination chemistry. This report describes an experiment involving the synthesis and resolution of enantiomeric tris(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) compounds followed by the analysis of enantiomeric purity by optical rotation and 59Co NMR spectroscopy through the formation of diastereomeric ion pairs.

Abstract

A series of experiments based on aspirin have been used in our high school chemistry laboratory. Experiments include (i) synthesis, purification, and characterization of aspirin by mp and TLC, (ii) percentage composition of a commercial aspirin tablet by titration, (iii) kinetics of the hydrolysis of aspirin to salicylic acid under various conditions, (iv) synthesis and characterization of copper(II) aspirinate and copper(II) salicylate, and (v) reaction of copper(II) aspirinate in aqueous solution.
