An inexpensive at-home quantitative analysis activity was developed for the determination of glucose in unknown samples using paper-based microfluidic devices. All of the materials and reagents for the activity fit in a small kit that was mailed to students. The only items students needed to supply were water and a smartphone. Microgram quantities of glucose were dried down in microcentrifuge tubes and included in the kit so that students could prepare external standards. Student results distinguished between two different concentrations of glucose that served as unknown samples. The combination of paper-based devices and dried-down microgram quantities of reagents provides a foundation for the development of other at-home or in-person experiments.

Paper-based microfluidic devices (µPAD) are a burgeoning platform of microfluidic analysis technology. The method described herein is for use in undergraduate and high school chemistry laboratories. A simple and convenient µPAD was fabricated by easy patterning of filter paper using a permanent marker pen. The usefulness of the device was demonstrated by determination of nitrite ion concentration employing a colorimetric assay. The results for real sample detection using this µPAD were satisfactory and show promise for use in other applications.

Chemists continue to work at the forefront of materials science research. Recent advances include application of bioengineering to produce plastics from renewable biomass instead of petroleum, generation of paper-based batteries, and development of phototriggerable microcapsules for chemical delivery. In this article, the author provides summaries of recent research advances in paper batteries, phototriggered microcapsules, and oil-free plastic production. (Contains 4 figures.)

As China's university enrollment has been rapidly expanding since 1999, along with a steady increase in graduate enrollment, graduate-level chemistry education is confronted with many challenges, such as how to enhance the connection between fundamental knowledge and advanced frontier knowledge, and how to encourage students to do self-directed study with creativity and passion. In the 2009-2010 autumn and spring terms, the Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences undertook curriculum reform; one change made reduced the instructional time for most courses to 40 hours from the previous practice of 60 hours, with the intention of freeing up more time for students to do self-directed study. This paper reports on curriculum reform efforts implemented in one fundamental graduate course, Organic Structure Analysis, identifying changes in teaching topics, assessment results (including students' feedback), and the syllabus (guest lectures were added). During the teaching process, greater efforts were made to introduce new spectra developments as well as broad "practical" applications gathered from top research papers or related to daily life, which are highly welcomed by the students. Students' feedback data were analyzed and used to guide adjustments to curriculum reform. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)

In the contemporary landscape of science education, teachers aspire to implement approaches that engage students with diverse teaching methods in diverse learning environments. By reviewing educational literature that deals with chemical escape rooms (ChEsRms), we can find several purposes they serve; however, only a few papers used ChEsRms for assessing student's knowledge and 21st century skills. The "Escape Room-based Educational Assessment" (EREA) has been built, at the Faculty of Education in our institution, to serve high-school chemistry teachers and their students as an alternative learning and assessment environment. A variety of puzzles are described in this activity paper. The escape room is equipped with cameras that record students' work while solving the puzzles, and at the same time, they can be observed by their teachers from a control room. Teachers were asked to provide feedback on the activity and specify which puzzles required the implementation of significant chemical knowledge, high order thinking skills (analysis, synthesis, or evaluation), and thinking creatively, for their solution. Based on the teachers' perception, the skills required while solving the puzzles were mapped. Teachers addressed a variety of aspects: (a) domain specific skills in chemistry such as the implementation and synthesis of chemical knowledge, (b) scientific practices such as question posing and problem solving, and (c) 21st century skills such as collaboration, taking initiative, and creativity.

There has been a growing awareness that STEM education should incorporate a wide range of capabilities, in addition to providing traditional theoretical and practical knowledge. In line with these skills, entitled "professional skills," GTIIT has defined seven core competencies. The enhancement of two of these competencies, namely, Engineering Aptitude and Students' Learning Skills, is the primary objective of the work described in this paper. An innovative educational method, termed Informal Personalized Teaching (IPT), incorporated in the organic chemistry laboratory course, strengthens the connection between theory and practice in lab work. The data collected and presented here indicate a beneficial positive effect on students and high level of satisfaction among the students.

A flipped classroom describes a class where students complete readings and watch lectures outside of class, while in-class time is spent on activities to practice content learned. The implementation of a flipped classroom approach has been shown to increase student learning and student enjoyment of courses. This paper describes using the flipped classroom technique to improve learning outcomes and student interest in an organic chemistry course. We assessed student learning and enjoyment through a student satisfaction questionnaire and comparative analysis of grades. The survey consisted of 14 Likert questions and four open-ended questions. Results of the student satisfaction questionnaire confirm that the majority of students believed that the flipped classroom teaching approach helped them learn better/more, that it improved their learning outcomes, and that they liked it better than a traditional class. The results of grade analysis did not show a significant difference between the flipped and traditional formats.

The withdrawal of students from Principles of Chemistry courses is a major problem for STEM retention and graduation rates, which are topics of national interest. In order to implement effective intervention methods to reduce withdrawal rates, we must understand the underlying reasons why students withdraw. This paper presents a multimethod study on student withdrawals from Principles of Chemistry from summer 2015 to fall 2018 semester. Eleven students who withdrew were interviewed, and thematic analysis and cluster analysis were used to interpret interview data to understand their reasons for withdrawing. Practical reasons included course structure, student-faculty relationship, student personal factors, chemistry content, and study strategies and academic support. Four themes identified from thematic analysis (hopeless, uncomfortable, demotivated, and overwhelmed) provided deeper insight into the affective emotional factors that contributed to the withdrawals. Cluster analysis revealed natural groupings of student responses and motivations, suggesting that targeted interventions can be developed for different groups. To ensure that our results are comparable to previous studies on course withdrawals, students who withdrew were analyzed according to demographic data. Results revealed that some groups had higher withdrawal rates compared to students who passed the course, which may reflect different levels of academic preparedness and thus an advantage/disadvantage. The analyses presented here will be of value when considering intervention approaches to reduce withdrawals from challenging courses.

The use of Symbolic Mathematics Engines (SMEs) in chemical education as a part of the Division of Computers in Chemistry was discussed by a panel of educators at the Symbolic Calculation in Chemistry symposium in Philadelphia in 2004. The panelists agreed that many more topics in chemistry are amenable to SME's exploration and that symbolic computational tools should be taught more widely in mathematics classes and software developers should strive to make their tools easier to use.

In order to fully appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of energy resources, there is a need to understand pertinent issues from other viewpoints besides a purely chemistry perspective. In this paper, the teaching of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and business databases as part of CM4282: Energy Resources at the Department of Chemistry, National University of Singapore (NUS), is described. For teaching of CBA, in two 1h sessions, topics such as net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), discount rate, payback period, and sensitivity analysis were introduced in the context of capital budgeting. With collaboration from NUS libraries, in another 1h session, students were instructed on searching business databases for conducting strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis as part of their end-of-semester group presentation. Exposure to CBA and business databases enables chemistry majors in CM4282 to understand energy resources in an interdisciplinary light and enables the application of classroom knowledge to real-life scenarios in energy resources.

This paper reports the development of a digital escape room for high school students using Genially, a web-based media platform. The escape room was used to aid understanding of basic concepts in chemistry and mostly enhance students' classes participation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The activity entitled "The thalidomide mystery" covered the concepts of chemical bonding, pH, acid and base, and laboratory glassware. The narrative of the game revolves around the drug named thalidomide; this drug was developed in the 1960s and its use caused several cases of phocomelia. WhatsApp chat groups were formed to stimulate an active engagement of the participants and maintain a collaborative and cooperative learning experience among them. Students were required to solve four chemistry puzzles to obtain the final password to reach the end of the game. The results obtained showed that the game was very useful for students mainly because it presented an innovative way of teaching chemistry, different from the traditional way in which the students are usually taught in their classrooms. The game helped the students to review the contents covered and was able to stimulate the active participation of both the students who like to study chemistry and those who do not.

Does early exposure to information literacy promote long-term student success? This paper describes a longitudinal case study testing the hypothesis that students who engage with scientific literature and develop information literacy early in their undergraduate studies will achieve higher grades on literature-based assignments in future coursework. We reasoned that students with previous experience in the scientific literature will develop more efficient and effective strategies to search and evaluate the literature and will ultimately favor higher-quality journals. To test these hypotheses, student performance data were collected during scientific literature-based assignments in two upper-division undergraduate lecture courses, Biochemistry 1 and Biochemistry 2. Data were analyzed from two student populations: students with prior information literacy instruction and critical practice from an Honors General Chemistry course sequence, and those students who had not undergone this training. The results indicate that, in Biochemistry 1, students with this prior information literacy training tend to use more professional, expert-like tools for exploring scientific literature and earn statistically higher scores on literature-based projects. However, by Biochemistry 2, the gaps close in both the exploration of the scientific literature and grade performance. This indicates that once students develop a foundation in information literacy, their sophistication in finding information and their performance on subsequent literature-based tasks improve. There was a small and statistically insignificant tendency for groups containing more students with prior information literacy training to cite more articles from the primary literature. However, the quality of the citations, as measured by journal impact factors, did not differ between the populations. The results of this interdisciplinary case study suggest that teaching information literacy to science students has both immediate and long-lasting benefits.

Response process validity evidence can provide researchers with insight into how and why participants interpret items on instruments such as tests and questionnaires. In chemistry education research literature and the social sciences more broadly, response process validity evidence has been used and reported in a variety of ways. This paper's objective is to support researchers in developing purposeful, theory-driven protocols to investigate response processes. We highlight key considerations for researchers who are interested in using cognitive interviews in their research, including the following: the theoretical basis for response process investigations, collection of response process validity evidence through cognitive interviews, and use of that evidence to inform instrument modifications.

Various strategies have been promoted to increase student engagement in collaborative activities in chemistry courses, including the use of small portable whiteboards where students can represent and share ideas. In this paper, we summarize the results of a study designed to investigate how the use of small portable whiteboards during groupwork affects student engagement. In particular, we paid attention to how the use of whiteboards affected social processing, knowledge dynamics, and student contributions during in-class tasks in a college general chemistry class. Our findings reveal significant differences in student engagement during activities in which whiteboards are used compared to those in which these tools are not used. Although the use of whiteboards correlated with more instances of knowledge construction, overall effects are mixed, as the use of whiteboards more frequently led groups to split in pairs in the observed class. Our results suggest that the use of whiteboards should be carefully planned and managed by instructors to maximize benefits and reduce potential hindrances to collaborative work.

The ability to build mechanistic explanations of natural phenomena is highly valued in all scientific disciplines, including chemistry. In this paper, we summarize the results of a qualitative study designed to characterize the nature of the mechanistic explanations built by college General Chemistry students when analyzing a physical process involving energy transfer between parts of a system at different temperatures, and a chemical process involving energy transformation and transfer due to chemical bonding. Prior studies have mostly focused on eliciting "what" students think happens in terms of energy transfer when chemical bonds break or form (e.g., energy is absorbed or released) and in this investigation we provide insights into their reasoning about "how" and "why" it happens. Our findings reveal that many students struggle to build sound mechanistic explanations for energy transfer between objects at different temperatures and for energy transformation and transfer during the formation of chemical bonds.

Student interviews have found an increasingly important place in the educational research landscape. They are used to create and validate assessments and concept inventories, as well as to more clearly elucidate student thinking. One-on-one interviews are most often completed in person at the researcher's or student's institution. There are significant advantages, however, of conducting interviews remotely including access to more varied populations, travel-related time and cost savings, and the ability of a single researcher to efficiently collect data at multiple institutions. This paper presents a description of a remote interview process along with details of ways to maintain commonality with its in-person analog. Our research provides evidence that the efficacy of results is maintained and that remote interviews provide a viable alternative to more costly and time-intensive on-site interviews. These results are particularly timely as ways to enable graduate education and research to continue during the COVID-19 pandemic response.

This paper describes the development and implementation of GAPc, a gamification project in chemistry. GAPc is an online active student-centered remedial teaching tool allowing prospective and enrolled students to electronically assess their knowledge of basic and advanced chemistry concepts via different game levels of expertise. This provides them with ways to correct potential shortcomings in view of academic education. A large number of exercises with different degrees of difficulty, links to additional sources of information, automated feedback, and the integrated grading center are key features of GAPc. Notwithstanding that GAPc is conceived as a distance learning and self-learning tool, it works equally well in a classroom setting. Indeed, GAPc was initially meant as a trajectory for precollege students to remediate their acquainted knowledge of chemistry by easy remote access. Today, on the Hasselt University Campus, GAPc is used in the chemistry summer school for senior high school students, and in chemistry courses for freshmen and sophomores enrolled in curricula with a major chemistry component.

Reports of the results of research within the emerging field of biochemistry education are appearing at an ever-increasing rate. Capturing an image of the landscape of Biochemistry Education Research (BCER) is complicated, however, by the interdisciplinary nature of biochemistry courses that may be taught at different levels and in different departments, even at the same institution. To develop a model that provides a sense of what research has been done, so far, we have investigated the literature on biochemistry education research within the contexts of the traditional biochemistry lecture and laboratory environments as well as courses taught within the health sciences, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, and molecular biology, as well as courses that combine biochemistry with other topics in chemistry, such as general chemistry and organic chemistry. We found that existing BCER has focused primarily on the lecture/classroom environment. Only about one-fourth of the BCER literature has been based on research in the laboratory setting. We also noted that the primary focus of research done so far has been on the structure/function properties of proteins. The goal of this review was a holistic understanding of the results of BCER that could be used by instructors to shape classroom practice as well as to provide BCER practitioners with an idea of the gaps in the existing literature that could be filled by future research. To transform the results of our analysis into a publishable form, we have used a format in which brief summaries of the topics of the BCER papers are presented.

Three-dimensional learning is the name given to the vision for science education described in the National Academies consensus report "A Framework for K-12 Science Education." Of the three dimensions described in the Framework, the Disciplinary Core Ideas and the Science and Engineering Practices have been enthusiastically adopted by many in the science education community. However, the third dimension, Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs), has received less attention. Indeed, some researchers have begun to question both the necessity and the theoretical rationale for the CCCs. That being said, emerging work both supports the use of the CCCs and provides practitioners with approaches to their use that not only hold potential for supporting students' construction of deeper and more useful knowledge but also may provide an approach to learning that is more equitable. In this paper, examples highlight the use of CCCs as lenses, tools, bridges, or "rules of the game" (epistemic heuristics), that can support sensemaking about chemical phenomena in the context of three-dimensional learning.

The skills and knowledge of the employers of chemists have been explored in varying degrees of specificity. Some studies have argued that the current university curriculum does not prepare students for modern industry adequately, while others have provided an overview of the job market for graduates with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. In order to stay relevant, the chemistry undergraduate course syllabi need to evolve constantly to meet the needs of the modern-day chemist. This study examines the specific technical skills and knowledge in job advertisements required by graduates with a bachelor's degree in chemistry to successfully transition to a workplace. A relatively new initiative in the chemistry department of the National University of Singapore, namely, the final year internship program, is also evaluated in this paper. Additionally, the chemistry undergraduate course syllabi of the universities and the most researched chemistry topics are examined. The aim of this study is to bridge the gap between chemistry departments and industries or research institutes.

Introductory experiments of chromatography are often conducted by separating colored samples, such as inks, dyes, and plant extracts, using filter paper, chalk, or thin layer chromatography (TLC) plates with various solvent systems. Many simple experiments have been reported. The relationship between normal chromatography and reversed-phase chromatography is, however, seldom illustrated with experiments. Where such experiments exist, they often utilize column chromatography and, particularly, HPLC, although TLC systems and paper chromatography have also been reported. In this article, the authors report how normal and reversed-phase TLC can be illustrated by separating extracts of spinach ("Spinacia oleracea") and rocket salad/ruccola ("Eruca sativa"). The novelty of this experiment is that (i) the chromatographic principle is different, that is, TLC (adsorption chromatography) compared to paper chromatography (partition chromatography); (ii) the extract material (ruccola instead of dandelions) is more available but still contains sufficient amount of pheophytin; (iii) the system has been extensively optimized with respect to resolution; and (iv) the quantity of material (TLC plates and solvent) has been reduced substantially, making the experiment inexpensive, time-efficient (elution time reduced from 40 to 8 min), and more in line with health and safety regulations.

Chemistry education research (CER) as a field is inherently interdisciplinary and has traditionally borrowed ideas, frameworks, and methodologies from other fields, such as anthropology, psychology, cognitive science, and science education more broadly. In this paper we encourage researchers to continue this tradition by utilizing the rich body of literature that exists outside of CER, specifically looking to communities interested in mathematics education and physics education to expand the research carried out in our field. Previous work situated in university-level mathematics and physics involves considerations and concerns shared by the chemistry education community, such as integrating conceptual and mathematical reasoning during problem solving. We also briefly discuss and draw attention to a recent ACS Symposium Series book, "It's Just Math: Research on Students' Understanding of Chemistry and Mathematics," that illustrates the rich area of inquiry at the interface of chemistry and mathematics. An overview of frameworks that have been productive for investigating students' mathematical reasoning in a chemistry context is provided, encouraging researchers to engage in work that crosses disciplinary boundaries and promotes discussion between experts from different fields.

In recent decades, technology has become a constant presence in the chemistry classroom with online homework extensively used in many programs. Although research has pointed to both increased course performance and better study habits in classes that utilize online homework, little work has explored the extraneous load that these platforms place on the learner's working memory. Cognitive load theory suggests that optimal learning occurs when sufficient capacity is available in working memory to process new information, and as such, it is important that extraneous load be minimized. This research study compared the extraneous load placed on working memory as students constructed Lewis structures under three conditions: using pen-and-paper, using "beSocratic," or using a traditional, button-driven online homework system. The results showed that the traditional online homework system induced a statistically significantly larger extraneous load than the other two drawing formats.

This paper describes the implementation of problem-based learning in chemical education with regard to the impact that protolytic reactions have on equilibria. The problem-based task presented here is focused on extremely weak acids and calcuation of the pH value of their aqueous solutions. The task is based on comparisons of K[subscript a] ranges over which calculations using the universal cubic equation, quadratic equation with a nonlinear term, and the simplest equation for pH calculation (pH = -log[H[superscript +]]) are each valid. Our students observed that an extremely weak acid can be defined as an acid with a pK[subscript a] greater than 8.13, with a relative error of 0.005 pH units, or 7.89, with a relative error of 0.01 pH units. Under these conditions, the quadratic equation without linear term serves as a universal formula. Students then solved a criterial equation using a quadratic equation without a linear term and the simplest formula to estimate the critical concentration, which is dependent on the pK[subscript a] value. Below this concentration, the simplest formula cannot be used. During practical applications, students observed that the critical concentration for hydrogen peroxide is very high (0.193 mol L[superscript -1]) and that the pH of its aqueous solution should be calculated according to a quadratic equation without a linear term in most of the practical examples. When traditional educational methods were used, students were unable to solve this problem properly, so we searched for a new way to solve this task. Taking into account the principles of problem-based learning, we designed a didactic cycle (as represented by a flowchart) for solving the above-mentioned problem. In this cycle, learning was aimed at the students, and the teacher only served as a facilitator. In this situation, the students' own work, research, and discovery were highlighted, together with the development of their chemical, mathematical, and IT skills.

Traditional engineering textbooks are substantially limited by approaches relying on analytical solutions where most of the applications are described by differential equations without simple analytical solutions. An alternative is to design a textbook around computer-program-based simulations, where the simulations progressively evolve through the textbook with the complexity of the content. Simulations can solve more complex problems with immediate utility in practical applications, and these capabilities are able to achieve higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy with quiz-based methods that can be performed in a few minutes. By example, the polymer engineering topic of thermoset polymerization has a global market of tens of billions of dollars; yet, the textbook coverage of the subject is sparse due to the inability of simple analytical solutions to provide useful solutions to practical applications. This paper provides a foundation and approach for a simulation-based-learning textbook to cover the important topic of polymer engineering which will also bridge the gap between student and researcher. A questionnaire was passed to two groups of college students to identify their response to the simulation-based learning of the subject of polymer engineering. The majority of students recommended this method.

Change over time is a crosscutting theme in the sciences that is pivotal to reaction kinetics, an anchoring concept in undergraduate chemistry, and students' struggles with rates of change are well-documented. Informed by the education scholarship in chemistry, physics, and mathematics, a research team with members from complementary disciplinary backgrounds developed a rubric to examine how 10 general chemistry textbooks used by top producers of American-Chemical-Society-approved chemistry baccalaureates treat rates of change concepts in reaction kinetics. The rubric is focused on four categories of students' challenges that emerged from the literature review: (i) fluency with graphical representations, (ii) meaning of sign of rate of change, (iii) distinction between average and instantaneous rates of change, and (iv) connections between differential and integrated forms of the rate laws. The analysis reveals interesting patterns but also variability among the texts that, intriguingly, is not explained by the degree to which a text is calculus-based. An especially powerful aspect of the discipline-based education research lens is its ability to reveal missing conceptual links in the texts. For example, the analysis makes apparent specific gaps in the supports needed to help students move between representational forms (words, symbols, graphs) in the development of the differential form of the rate laws. The paper discusses the implications of the findings for chemistry instructors and chemical education research.

This paper describes the successful adaptation of certain components of peer-led team learning (PLTL) as well as service learning principles into our initiative: lab skills seminars (LSS). These seminars were organized for large, second year organic chemistry laboratory courses. Prior to LSS, the only help available for students was traditional office hours conducted by the course coordinator. Such office hours are not sufficient or effective in large courses for numerous reasons, such that laboratory skill seminars were created to fill that gap and also diminish high levels of anxiety associated with complicated laboratories. Seminars were prepared and facilitated by upper year service learning students or volunteers, who had successfully completed the same course. Facilitators and course students mutually benefit significantly from these seminars, and this article will discuss these benefits in greater detail.

The Polymer Division of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) generates and recommends such rules for naming processes and materials in polymer science. It is the goal of IUPAC that these recommendations be applied in polymer science curricula worldwide. For this purpose, a large amount of material has been provided by the Polymer Division of IUPAC, and in this paper these resources are described from the personal perspective of the authors. A discussion of terminology is then provided, including a detailed discussion of the term "dispersity" (M[subscript w]/M[subscript n]) and the rationale behind the recommended IUPAC names of different polymerization mechanisms. This is followed by a commentary on polymer nomenclature with examples. Finally, exemplary applications of resources provided by the Polymer Division of IUPAC for educational purposes around the world are presented.
