The free-surface structure is expected to not only have excellent architectural expression power, but also guarantee the mechanical rationality. In this research, the static test was performed on a typical Gaussian curvature free-surface obtained through the method developed in the paper named the NURBS-GM method for computational morphogenesis of free-form structure. Results show that higher bending stress appears in the transition area of the positive-negative Gaussian curvature, as well as the neighboring region of the support. However, the structure mainly resists the load in the form of membrane stress. The distribution of the membrane stress changes along with the increasing load. And the significant change happens in the positive-negative Gaussian curvature transition area. The top surface crack appears in the positive-negative Gaussian curvature transition area first and develops towards the support. Cracks on the bottom surface are jointed to form complete lines and extended to the support. During the whole loading process, cracks appear- a little later while its quantity is large. At last, local strength damage happens in the neighboring area of the loading point. The load-displacement curve has a large slope in the elastic stage and a long plastic development stage. FE simulation was performed for the test model using the software ABAQUS. Results of the FE simulation were compared with the test data. And it is found that they agree well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
