This study aimed to explore the influence of different onset thresholds on the between-session reliability and magnitude of squat jump (SJ) performance. Twenty men were tested on two sessions separated by 48 h against external loads of 0.5, 30 and 60 kg. The initiation of the jump was defined as the first instant in which the vertical ground reaction force exceeded system weight by 10 N (10 N), 50 N (50 N), 1% of system weight (1%SW), 10% of system weight (10%SW) and five standard deviation of system weight minus 30 ms (5SDSW). The following variables were calculated from the force-time signal collected on a force platform: mean, peak and time to peak values of force, power and velocity, average rate of force development, peak rate of force development, rate of force development index, impulse, jump height, and push-off time. The 50 N, 10%SW and 5SDSW thresholds generally revealed a higher reliability than the 10 N and 1%SW thresholds (97 and 21 out of 252 comparisons for the coefficient of variation and intraclass correlation coefficient, respectively). The magnitude of most of the variables calculated using the 50 N and 10%SW thresholds significantly differed with respect to the 10 N, 1%SW and 5SDSW thresholds (P < 0.05). These results suggest that both the reliability and magnitude of SJ performance variables are influenced by the jump starting threshold. The 50 N, 10%SW and 5SDSW thresholds maximise the reliability of SJ performance variables, while the 5SDSW should be recommended since it considers more force signal than the 50 N and 10%SW thresholds. The shoulder complex (SC) consists of joints with little congruence and its active and passive structures ensure its stability. Stability of the SC rotation centre during upper arm movements can be estimated through the analysis of Helical Axes (HAs) dispersion. The aim of this study was to describe shoulder HAs dispersion during upper limb movements performed with dominant and non-dominant arms by young and elderly subjects. Forty subjects participated in the study (20 young: age 24.8 ± 2.8 years and 20 elderly: age 71.7 ± 6.3 years). Subjects were asked to perform four cycles of 15 rotations, flexions, elevations and abductions with one arm at a time at constant speed. Reflective markers were placed on participants' arms and trunk in order to detect movements and the HAs dispersion with an optoelectronic system. Mean Distance (MD) from the HAs barycenter and Mean Angle (MA) were used as HAs dispersion indexes. Young subjects showed significant lower MD compared to the elderly during all motion ranges of rotation, flexion and elevation (p < 0.001). Moreover, the MD was lower in the dominant arm compared to the contralateral for rotation (p = 0.049) and flexion (p = 0.019). In the hopping literature, whole-body vertical stiffness and leg stiffness are used interchangeably, due to most of the movement occurring in the vertical direction. However, there is some anterior/posterior movement of the center of mass and displacements of the foot during hopping in place in both children and adults. Further it is not understood if leg stiffness show a similar pattern as whole-body vertical stiffness when increasing hopping frequency. The purpose of this study was to test if whole-body vertical stiffness and leg stiffness are different during single-leg hopping in-place in children and adults, across a range of frequencies. Seventeen children aged 5–11 years and 16 young adults participated in this study. The subjects hopped at their preferred frequency as well as 20% below, 20% above and 40% above preferred frequency. Our results demonstrate that both whole-body vertical stiffness and leg stiffness increase when increasing hopping frequency for children and adults. However, whole-body vertical stiffness consistently overestimates leg stiffness due to a similar peak force but a greater leg length change compared to vertical COM displacement. This suggests a considerable horizontal COM movement from landing to mid-stance during hopping. Children aged 5–11 years old showed lower absolute values but higher normalized values of two stiffness measures than adults. This suggests somewhat adult-like stiffness control in children, but a reduced ability to manipulate the horizontal movement during single-leg hopping in place when compared to adults. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of unexpected gait termination in able-bodied participants during gait initiation on spatiotemporal and stance limb biomechanical parameters. Twenty-one healthy adults took part in this study and were divided into two groups based on the natural anterior or posterior incline of their trunk. Each participant performed 15 random trials of gait initiation: 10 trials with a Go signal and 5 with Go-&-Stop signals. Spatiotemporal parameters were assessed between the Go signal and the first heel contact. Ankle, knee, and hip joint moments were calculated in the sagittal plane. Free moment and impulse were also calculated for the stance limb. Spatiotemporal parameters were not influenced by the mean trunk inclination (p > 0.05), but participants with a forwardly-inclined trunk presented higher hip extension moments (p < 0.05). Unexpected stopping required smaller ankle and knee moments compared to the Go condition (p < 0.05). The hip extension moments appeared to be independent of gait initiation conditions (p > 0.05). The capacity of able-bodied people to interrupt their gait initiation relied on a two-stage disto-proximal braking modality involving explosive motor patterns at the ankle and hip joints. Such a pattern could be altered in vulnerable people, and further studies are needed to investigate this. This study determined a clinical method applicable as a functional protocol to assess and improve the postural control of people suffering from a lack of motor modulation during crucial transient tasks. Movement of a racehorse simulator differs to that of a real horse, but the effects of these differences on jockey technique have not been evaluated. We quantified and compared the kinematics and kinetics of jockeys during gallop riding on a simulator and real horses. Inertial measurement units were attached mid-shaft to the long bones of six jockeys and the sacrum of the horse or simulator. Instrumented stirrups were used to measure force. Data were collected during galloping on a synthetic gallop or while riding a racehorse simulator. Jockey kinematics varied more on a real horse compared to the simulator. Greater than double the peak stirrup force was recorded during gallop on real horses compared to the simulator. On the simulator stirrup forces were symmetrical, whereas on a real horse peak forces were higher on the opposite side to the lead limb. Asymmetric forces and lateral movement of the horse and jockey occurs away from the side of the lead leg, likely a result of horse trunk roll. Jockeys maintained a more upright trunk position on a real horse compared to simulator, with no change in pitch. The feet move in phase with the horse and simulator exhibiting similar magnitude displacements in all directions. In contrast the pelvis was in phase with the horse and simulator in the dorso-ventral and medio-lateral axes while a phase shift of 180° was seen in the cranio-caudal direction indicating an inverted pendulum action of the jockey. Single-leg hopping in-place can be typically modeled using a spring-mass model. Within this model, the leg acts as a spring whose stiffness can be regulated to hop at different heights and frequencies. The control of vertical stiffness has been shown to be important for running and jumping performance, as well as injury prevention. It is known that adults increase vertical stiffness to hop at frequencies higher than preferred, but it is unknown if children younger than 11 years have a similar ability to control vertical stiffness. Further, little is known about the horizontal movement of the center-of-mass (COM) and foot positioning during hopping in both children and adults. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of the spring-mass model in 5–11 years old children and compare horizontal COM and foot movement between children and adults. We found that single-leg hopping in children generally follows a spring-mass model and children are able to increase vertical stiffness with hopping frequency. Moreover, children demonstrate adult-like control strategies of decreasing the COM range and toe displacement but maintaining the COM positioning with increasing frequency. However, children showed a faster preferred frequency, elevated vertical stiffness normalized by body weight, a greater toe displacement between hops and a greater toe range within a trial. Together, single-leg hopping in place can generally be modeled in 5–11 years old children as a spring-mass model; however, children at this age are still developing their motor ability to control the COM and foot placement during hopping. The harmonic ratio (HR), derived from the Fourier analysis of trunk accelerations, has been described in various ways as a measure of walking smoothness, walking rhythmicity, or dynamic stability. There is an increasing interest in applying the HR technique to investigate the impact of various pathologies on locomotion; however, explanation of the method has been limited. The aim here is to present a clear description of the mathematical basis of HRs and an understanding of their interpretation. We present harmonic theory, the interpretation of the HR using sinusoidal signals, and an example using actual trunk accelerations and harmonic analyses during limb-loading conditions. We suggest that the HR method may be better defined, not as a measure of rhythmicity or stability, but as a measure of step-to-step symmetry within a stride. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Stroke survivors present a less efficient gait compared to healthy subjects due to abnormal knee flexion during the swing phase of gait, associated with spasticity of the rectus femoris muscle and overactivity of the ankle plantarflexors. It is relevant to understand the effect of the ankle foot orthosis (AFO) on gait in individuals with plantarflexor spasticity. The aim of this study was to compare the knee kinematics with an AFO/footwear combination and barefoot in post-stroke subjects with plantarflexor spasticity. Ten subjects with chronic hemiplegia were measured. Two kinematic variables were assessed during the swing phase of the paretic limb: knee flexion angle at toeoff and peak knee flexion angle. We also analyzed gait speed and step length of the non-paretic limb. All variables were obtained with and without the orthosis. Kinematic data were acquired using a motion capture system (ELITE). Subjects wearing an AFO showed significant improvements in gait speed (0.62m/s (0.08 SD) vs. 0.47m/s (0.13 SD) (p=0.007)), step length of the non-paretic limb (42cm (5.9 SD) vs. 33.5cm (6.6 SD) (p=0.005)) and peak knee flexion angle during the swing phase: 30.7° (14.1° SD) vs. 26.3° (11.7° SD) p=0.005. No significant differences were obtained in the knee flexion angle at toeoff between no AFO and AFO conditions. We described benefits with AFO/footwear use in the kinematics of the knee, the step length of the non-paretic limb, and the gait velocity in hemiplegic subjects after mild to moderate stroke. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the timing of the pole plant during the stance phase of the jump on the energy level of the vaulter/pole system at take-off for a special pole vault take-off exercise (Jagodin). We hypothesised that an earlier pole plant would increase the pole energy at take-off compared to the energy decrease of the vaulter during the jump and plant complex and so lead to a higher total energy of the vaulter/pole system at take-off. Six male pole vaulters experienced three Jagodins each with different pole plant time building three groups of vaults (early, intermediate, late pole plant). Kinematic data of vaulter and pole were recorded, as were ground reaction forces measured at the end of the pole under the planting box and under the take-off foot. These measurements allowed the energy exchange between the vaulter and pole to be determined. We found neither statistical significant differences in the mechanical energy level of the vaulter/pole system during take-off between the three groups nor a relationship between the timing of the pole plant and the energy level of the vaulter–pole system during take-off. We conclude that although the timing of the pole plant influences the interactions between the vaulter, the pole, and the ground, it does not affect the athlete''s performance. Although a late pole plant decreases the loss of energy by the vaulter during the take-off, this is counterbalanced by a decrease in the energy stored in the pole at take-off. Abstract: Gait asymmetry analyses are beneficial from clinical, coaching and technology perspectives. Quantifying overall athlete asymmetry would be useful in allowing comparisons between participants, or between asymmetry and other factors, such as sprint running performance. The aim of this study was to develop composite kinematic and kinetic asymmetry scores to quantify athlete asymmetry during maximal speed sprint running. Eight male sprint trained athletes (age 22±5 years, mass 74.0±8.7kg and stature 1.79±0.07m) participated in this study. Synchronised sagittal plane kinematic and kinetic data were collected via a CODA motion analysis system, synchronised to two Kistler force plates. Bilateral, lower limb data were collected during the maximal velocity phase of sprint running (velocity=9.05±0.37ms−1). Kinematic and kinetic composite asymmetry scores were developed using the previously established symmetry angle for discrete variables associated with successful sprint performance and comparisons of continuous joint power data. Unlike previous studies quantifying gait asymmetry, the scores incorporated intra-limb variability by excluding variables from the composite scores that did not display significantly larger (p<0.05) asymmetry than intra-limb variability. The variables that contributed to the composite scores and the magnitude of asymmetry observed for each measure varied on an individual participant basis. The new composite scores indicated the inter-participant differences that exist in asymmetry during sprint running and may serve to allow comparisons between overall athlete asymmetry with other important factors such as performance. Abstract: Recognition of the changes during gait that occur normally as a part of growth is essential to prevent mislabeling those changes from adult gait as evidence of gait pathology. Currently, in the literature, the definition of a mature age for ankle joint dynamics is controversial (i.e., between 5 and 10 years). Moreover, the mature age of the metatarsophalangeal (MP) joint, which is essential for the functioning of the foot, has not been defined in the literature. Thus, the objective of the present study explored foot mechanics (ankle and MP joints) in young children to define a mature age of foot function. Forty-two healthy children between 1 and 6 years of age and eight adults were measured during gait. The ground reaction force (GRF), the MP and ankle joint angles, moments, powers, and 3D angles between the joint moment and the joint angular velocity vectors (3D angle α M.ω) were processed and compared between four age groups (2, 3.5, 5 and adults). Based on statistical analysis, the MP joint biomechanical parameters were similar between children (older than 2 years) and adults, hinting at a quick maturation of this joint mechanics. The ankle joint parameters and the GRFs (except for the frontal plane) showed an adult-like pattern in 5-year-old children. Some ankle joint parameters, such as the joint power and the 3D angle α M.ω still evolved significantly until 3.5 years. Based on these results, it would appear that foot maturation during gait is fully achieved at 5 years. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) often report discomfort and pain during walking. To date, most of the studies conducted to determine gait alterations in PFPS patients have focused on sagittal plane alterations. Physiological and biomechanical factors, however, suggest that frontal and transverse plane alterations may be involved in PFPS. We therefore decided to conduct a kinematic and kinetic evaluation on all three planes in 9 PFPS subjects and 9 healthy sex- and age-matched controls. General gait characteristics were similar in patients and controls, with the exception of swing velocity, which was lower in PFPS patients. Patients also displayed an increased knee abductor and external rotator moments in loading response, and reduced knee extensor moment both in loading response and in terminal stance. We speculate that these findings may be linked both to a pain-avoiding gait pattern and to alterations in the timing of activation of different components of the quadriceps muscle, which is typical of PFPS. The relevance for clinicians is this gait pattern may represent a biomechanical risk factor for future knee osteoarthritis. We therefore recommend that treatments aimed at PFPS should also attempt to restore a correct walking pattern. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Wearable resistance allows individualized loading for sport specific movements and can lead to specific strength adaptations benefiting the athlete. The objective was to determine biomechanical changes during running with lower limb light-weight wearable resistance. Fourteen participants (age: 28 ± 4 years; height: 180 ± 8 cm; body mass: 77 ± 6 kg) wore shorts and calf sleeves of a compression suit allowing attachment of light loads. Participants completed four times two mins 20-m over-ground shuttle running bouts at 3.3 m*s−1 alternated by three mins rest. The first running bout was unloaded and the other three bouts were under randomised loaded conditions (1%, 3% and 5% additional loading of the individual body mass). 3D motion cameras and force plates recorded kinematic and kinetic data at the midpoint of each 20-m shuttle. Friedman-test for repeated measures and linear mixed effect model analysis were used to determine differences between the loading conditions (α = 0.05). Increased peak vertical ground reaction force (2.7 N/kg to 2.74 N/kg), ground contact time (0.20 s to 0.21 s) and decreased step length (1.49 m to 1.45 m) were found with additional 5 % body mass loading compared to unloaded running (0.001 > p < 0.007). Marginally more knee flexion and hip extension and less plantarflexion was seen with higher loading. Differences in the assessed parameters were present between each loading condition but accompanied by subject variability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters of backward walking (BW) and forward walking (FW) on sand. Randomly selected subjects (n = 28) were categorized into a sand group (SG, n = 14) and an overground group (OG, n = 14). SG was directed to perform both FW and BW on sand, while OG performed the same on the overground. Spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters were measured using the LegSys + device. The comparative findings of both the groups showed that the spatiotemporal parameters of SG varied significantly from those of OG in both FW and BW conditions (p < 0.05). The kinematic parameters varied significantly between the two groups only in the FW condition (p < 0.05). When compared within each group, spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters in the BW condition were significantly different from those in the FW condition. However, the percentages of stance, swing, and double support were not significantly different between FW and BW conditions (p > 0.05). This study suggests that sand walking is associated with a different gait pattern than overground walking, as evident from the analysis of the results of spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters in both FW and BW conditions. Biomechanical feedback technologies are becoming increasingly prevalent in elite athletic training environments but how the kinematic and kinetic data they produce can be best used to improve sports techniques and enhance sports performance is unclear. This paper draws on theoretical and empirical developments in the motor control, skill acquisition, and sports biomechanics literatures to offer practical guidance and strategic direction on this issue. It is argued that the information produced by biomechanical feedback technologies can only describe , with varying degrees of accuracy, what patterns of coordination and control are being adopted by the athlete but, crucially, it cannot prescribe how these patterns of coordination and control should be modified to enhance sports performance. As conventional statistical and theoretical modelling paradigms in applied sports biomechanics provide limited information about patterns of coordination and control, and do not permit the identification of athlete-specific optimum sports techniques, objective criteria on which to base technical modifications that will consistently lead to enhanced performance outcomes cannot reliably be established for individual athletes. Given these limitations, an alternative approach, which is harmonious with the tenets of dynamical systems theory and aligned with the pioneering insights of Bernstein (1967) on skill acquisition, is advocated. This approach involves using kinematic and kinetic data to channel the athlete's search towards their own unique 'optimum' pattern of coordination and control as they actively explore their perceptual-motor workspace during practice. This approach appears to be the most efficacious use of kinematic and kinetic data given current biomechanical knowledge about sports techniques and the apparent inability of existing biomechanical modelling approaches to accurately predict how technique changes will impact on performance outcomes for individual athletes. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze the reproducibility of kinematic, dynamometric and derived mechanical energy parameters in the pole vault as a main precondition for the practical applicability of the concept of energy exchange in the pole vault [Arampatzis et al., 2004. Journal of Biomechanics 37, 1353–1360]. A total of 46 vaults of six experienced vaulters were analyzed. On the basis of 3D kinematic data of the athlete and the pole and ground reaction forces measured at the end of the pole in the planting box the reproducibility of parameters that describe the energy transfer into the pole and the energy exchange between the athlete and the pole during the vault was proofed. Intraclass correlation, mean root mean square and the coefficient of variance were determined, additionally the Wilcoxon Test was applied. Parameters of the athlete''s 3D total mechanical energy, e.g. initial energy and final energy, and the pole energy (maximum pole energy, energy of the pole due to compressive force and bending moment) were highly reproducible. The distribution of the energy transferred into the pole due to compressive force and bending moment, the same as the energy gain of the vaulter–pole system during the vault, which indicates the strategy of interacting with the pole, were also reproducible. With this the concept of energy exchange in the pole vault can be used to analyze the impact of training interventions, changes in movement pattern respectively, on the vaulters performance during different phases of the vault. Shoulder replacement is indicated in the treatment of pain due to osteoarthritis. Few studies have objectively assessed range of motion (RoM) gains at different post-operative time points. This is a prospective 3D motion analysis study to objectively quantify RoM changes at multiple time points following shoulder resurfacing arthroplasty (SRA) for primary gleno-humeral osteoarthritis, comparing it with clinically measured RoM. Clinical assessment, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain score, Constant-Morley (CS) and Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS) were recorded. Motion analysis was performed for RoM and three activities of daily living tasks (ADL), pre-operatively and post-operatively at 4 and 12 months. Nineteen shoulders in fifteen patients were included. The mean age was 72 years (range 52–84). There were significant improvements in external and internal rotation, ability to place the hand behind the head and reach the fifth lumbar vertebra, at 4 months on clinical examination and kinematic analysis with no further improvements at 12 months. There was significant improvement in abduction at 4 months with further improvement at 12 months, which was significantly more than noted on clinical assessment. In contrast, kinematic analysis showed a reduction in flexion between 4 and 12 months, while clinically there appeared to be an improvement between these time periods. This is the first study to prospectively utilise objective kinematic 3-D motion analysis in addition to clinical measurements and outcome scores, to investigate the outcome of resurfacing arthroplasty at multiple time points after surgery, providing an understanding into the trends of change in these parameters. Lower extremity alignment is very important after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This study aimed to compare the plantar pressure distribution while walking and the overall limb alignment, including the hindfoot, between kinematically (KA) and mechanically aligned (MA) TKA. The plantar pressure distribution was investigated using a pressure plate during walking and one-leg standing among four groups: patients one year after KA-TKA (KA group; n = 25), patients one year after MA-TKA (MA group, n = 25), patients with osteoarthritis (OA) undergoing non-surgical care (OA group, n = 25), and healthy controls (Healthy group; n = 25). Conventional and true mechanical axes (the line from the femoral head to the lowest point of the calcaneus) were evaluated on unipedal standing long-leg radiographs in the KA, MA, and OA groups. Results were compared using analysis of variance. The OA group showed a lateral loading pattern in the mid- and rearfoot, while the MA group showed a medial rearfoot loading pattern during walking. On the contrary, the KA and Healthy groups showed an almost equal pressure distribution between the medial and lateral rearfoot. Moreover, although both mechanical axes in the KA group passed through the knee more medially, a more neutral alignment was achieved in the true mechanical axis compared to that in the MA group. KA-TKA results in more neutral weight-bearing through the true mechanical axis and allows patients to walk while maintaining medial and lateral rearfoot pressure more evenly than MA-TKA. The effect of race has rarely been investigated in biomechanics studies despite racial health disparities in the incidence of musculoskeletal injuries and disease, hindering both treatment and assessment of rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that racial differences in gait mechanics exist between African Americans (AA) and white Americans (WA). Ninety-two participants (18–30 years old) were recruited with equal numbers in each racial group and sex. Self-selected walking speed was measured for each participant. 3D motion capture and force plate data were recorded during 7 walking trials at regular and fast set speeds. Step length, step width, peak vertical ground reaction force, peak hip extension, peak knee flexion, and peak ankle plantarflexion were computed for all trials at both set speeds. Multivariate and post-hoc univariate ANOVA models were fit to determine main and interaction effects of sex and race (SPSS V26, α = 0.05). Self-selected walking speed was slower in AA (p = 0.004, ƞ p 2 = 0.088). No significant interactions between race and sex were identified. Males took longer steps (regular: p < 0.001, ƞ p 2 = 0.288, fast: p < 0.001, ƞ p 2 = 0.193) and had larger peak knee flexion (regular: p = 0.007, ƞ p 2 = 0.081, fast: p < 0.001, ƞ p 2 = 0.188) and ankle plantarflexion angles (regular: p = 0.050, ƞ p 2 = 0.044, fast: p = 0.049, ƞ p 2 = 0.044). Peak ankle plantarflexion angle (regular: p = 0.012, ƞ p 2 = 0.071, fast: p < 0.001, ƞ p 2 = 0.137) and peak hip extension angle during fast walking (p = 0.007, ƞ p 2 = 0.083) were smaller in AA. Equivalency in gait measures between racial groups should not be assumed. Patients with patellofemoral pain (PFP) present altered activation of the hip and knee muscles. Electromyography (EMG) analyses in PFP patients are usually performed individually for each muscle. However, several studies suggest that the central nervous system may modulate neural commands directed to groups of co-activated muscles, called muscle synergies. Investigating the synergistic organization in PFP will advance our knowledge of the influence of pain on muscle coordination. This study aimed to compare the motor coordination between women with and without PFP during the lateral step down (LSD). 15 women with PFP and 14 asymptomatic women underwent three-dimensional kinematics and EMG assessment during LSD. The Movement Deviation Profile (MDP) was calculated from kinematic data. Muscle synergies were extracted from EMG data of eight lower limb muscles using a non-negative factorization algorithm. Results revealed differences in MDP and an altered synergistic control between women with PFP and asymptomatic while performing the same motor gesture. Particularly, the variability accounted for (VAF) when using 3 synergies to reconstruct EMGs of the PFP group was higher than in the control group, suggesting reduced complexity of motor control in PFP. Detailed synergy analyses highlighted specific differences between groups in vastii and rectus femoris, which are muscles with a crucial role during the squat phase and the transition to rise phase of the LSD. This study shows the ability of muscle synergies analysis to reveal impaired motor coordination in PFP patients, and has the potential to be explored as a complementary tool to current clinical assessment techniques.
