Prehension movements in primates have been extensively studied for decades, and hand transport and hand grip adjustment are usually considered as the main components of any object reach-to-grasp action. Evident temporal patterns were found for the velocity of the hand during the transport phase and for the digits kinematics during pre-shaping and enclosing phases. However, such kinematics were always analysed separately in regard to time, and never studied in terms of dependence one from another. Nevertheless, if a reliable one-to-one relationship is proven, it would allow reconstructing the digit velocity (and position) simply by knowing the hand acceleration during reaching motions towards the target object, ceasing the usual dependence seen in literature from time of movement and distance from the target. In this study, the aim was precisely to analyse reach-to-grasp motions to explore if such relationship exists and how it can be formulated. Offline and real-time results not only seem to suggest the existence of a time-independent, one-to-one relationship between hand transport and hand grip adjustment, but also that such relationship is quite resilient to the different intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the target objects such as size, shape and position. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of Modified Vector Coding in assessing the coordination and coordination variability of the lower limbs and pelvis during running and to determine the Minimal Detectable Change (MDC). Twenty-five healthy runners participated in a biomechanical analysis of treadmill running using a motion capture system. Modified vector coding was applied to assess the three-dimensional coordination among various pelvis and lower limb segmental couplings. Reliability was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), Standard Error of Measurement (SEM), MDC, and Bland-Altman analysis to ascertain measurement consistency, agreement, and the smallest clinically meaningful change that exceeds measurement error. The test–retest reliability for 33 of 42 segmental couplings analyzed was good to excellent, with ICC values ranging from 0.613 to 0.928 (p <0.05), which substantiates the robustness of modified vector coding in running biomechanics. However, nine couplings, particularly femur-tibia in the sagittal plane during midstance and foot in the frontal plane-tibia in the transverse plane during late stance, exhibited poor to moderate reliability. These findings underscore the need for cautious interpretation due to significant proportional bias (p <0.05). SEM and MDC provided insights into the precision and minimal clinically significant changes for each coupling. The findings confirm the reliability of modified vector coding for biomechanical analysis in running, with most couplings demonstrating consistent high reliability. Nevertheless, specific couplings should be interpreted with caution due to potential measurement errors. The application of MDC highlights the precision of modified vector coding in biomechanical analyses and emphasizes the importance of careful interpretation to improve clinical and research outcomes in running-related injuries. Overuse injuries are often caused by pronated foot and the associated abnormal lower-extremity kinematics during dynamic activities. Various patterns of foot kinematics are observed among individuals with pronated feet during dynamic activities, resulting in different dynamic kinematics of the proximal joint. This study aimed to identify the foot kinematic patterns during gait among individuals with pronated feet and evaluate the relationship between these foot kinematic patterns and the hip and knee kinematics. A three-dimensional motion capture system was used to collect data regarding the foot, knee, and hip kinematics during the stance phase of gait of 42 individuals with pronated feet. A hierarchical cluster analysis method was used to identify the optimal number of clusters based on the foot kinematics, including navicular height (NH) at initial contact and dynamic navicular drop (DND). The differences in the cluster and demographic variables were examined. One-dimensional statistical parametric mapping was used to evaluate the differences in the time histories of the NH, knee, and hip kinematics during the stance phase. Three subgroups were identified on the basis of the NH and DND: Cluster 1, moderate NH at initial contact and larger DND; Cluster 2, highest NH at initial contact and smaller DND; and Cluster 3, lowest NH at initial contact and smaller DND. The hip adduction angle of Cluster 1 was significantly higher than that of Cluster 3 from the 0% to 51% stance phases. The kinetic demands of the spine can be assessed using a top-down (TD) or bottom-up (BU) approach, which start calculations from the either the hands or from the feet, respectively. Biomechanists have traditionally favored a BU approach, though existing modeling approaches encourage a TD approach. Regardless of the approach the demands should be similar, provided the external forces and linked segment parameters are equivalently measured and modeled. Demonstrating a level of agreement between the two approaches can help evaluate a model. Further, having both approaches can be advantageous when data is inaccurate or unavailable for one. The purpose of this study was to compare the internal moments and forces at multiple lumbar and thoracic intervertebral joint (IVJ) levels during lifting tasks from an established OpenSim thoracolumbar spine model that applies a TD approach and a similar model modified to adopt a BU approach. Kinematics and external forces were recorded from twelve participants during sagittal and lateral lifts of different lifting speeds and crate masses. For both approaches IVJ kinetics were estimated using a standard OpenSim modeling pipeline. The BU and TD approach IVJ joint moments generally agreed both temporally (R2 =.94 ±.17) and in magnitude (RMSE=6.2 ± 3.5 Nm) of the primary planes of movement. There were however some temporal fit exceptions for off axes moments with low magnitudes (i.e., < 10 Nm). Bland-Altman plots also indicated acceptable agreement for IVJ peak forces (BU-TD difference of 12 ± 111 and 8 ± 31 N in compression and resultant shear, respectfully). These results support the application of the BU approach and the assigned linked segment parameters of the model. Acoustic stimulation appears to be a promising strategy in reducing the risk of falling in older adults, demonstrating effectiveness in improving stability. However, its impact on movement variability, another crucial indicator of fall risk, seems to be limited. This study aims to assess movement variability during walking in a cohort of healthy older adults exposed to three different frequencies of acoustic stimulation (90%, 100% and 110% of each subject's average cadence). Using a systemic approach based on network theory, which considers the intricate relationships between all body segments, we constructed connectivity matrices composed of nodes, represented by bony landmarks, and edges, consisting of the standardised covariance of accelerations between each pair of nodes. By introducing a new metric called Similarity Score (S-score), we quantified the ability of each individual to repeat the same motor pattern at each gait cycle under different experimental conditions. The study revealed that rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) at 100% and 90% of the mean cadence significantly increased the S-scores compared to the baseline. Although knee biomechanics has been examined, hip and ankle biomechanics in incline ramp walking has not been explored for patients with total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this study was to investigate the hip and ankle joint kinematic and kinetic biomechanics of different incline slopes for replaced limbs and non-replaced limbs in individuals with TKA compared to healthy controls. Twenty-five patients with TKR and ten healthy controls performed walking trials on four slope conditions of level (0°), 5°, 10° and 15° on a customized instrumented ramp system. A 3x4 (limb x slope) repeated analysis of variance was used to evaluate selected variables. The results showed a greater peak ankle dorsiflexion angle in the replaced limbs compared to healthy limbs. No significant interactions or limb main effect for other ankle and hip variables. The peak dorsiflexion angle, eversion angle and dorsiflexion moment were progressively higher in each comparison from level to 15°. The peak plantarflexion moment was also increased with each increase of slopes. Both the replaced and non-replaced limbs of patients with TKA had lower hip flexion moments than the healthy control limbs. Hip angle at contact and hip extension range of motion increased with each increase of slopes. Peak hip loading-response internal extension moment increased with each increase in slope and peak hip push-off internal flexion moment decreased with each increase of slope. Our results showed increased dorsiflexion in replaced limbs but no other compensations of hip and ankle joints of replaced limbs compared to non-replaced limbs and their healthy controls during incline walking, providing further support of using incline walking in rehabilitation for patients with TKA. The complexity of wrist anatomy and mechanics makes it challenging to develop standardized measurements and establish a normative reference database of wrist biomechanics despite being studied extensively. Moreover, heterogeneity factors in both demographic characteristics (e.g. gender) and physiological properties (e.g. ligament laxity) could lead to differences in biomechanical behaviour even within healthy groups. We investigated the kinematic behaviour of the carpal bones by creating a virtual web-like network between the bones using electromagnetic (EM) sensors. Our objective was to quantify the changes in the carpal bones' biomechanical relative motions and orientations during active wrist motion in the form of orb-web architecture. Models from five cadaveric specimens at different wrist positions: (1) Neutral to 30° Extension, (2) Neutral to 50° Flexion, (3) Neutral to 10° Radial Deviation, (4) Neutral to 20° Ulnar Deviation, and (5) Dart-Throw Motion – Extension (30° Extension/10° RD) to Dart-Throw Motion Flexion (50° Flexion/20° UD), in both neutral and pronated forearm have been analyzed. Quantification analyses were done by measuring the changes in the network thread length, as well as determining the correlation between the threads at different wrist positions. We observed similarities in the kinematic web-network patterns across all specimens, and the interactions between the network threads were aligned to the carpal bones' kinematic behaviour. Furthermore, analyzing the relative changes in the wrist web network has the potential to address the heterogeneity challenges and further facilitate the development of a 3D wrist biomechanics quantitative tool. Low-cost markerless motion capture systems offer the potential for 3D measurement of joint angles during human movement. This study aimed to validate a smartphone-based markerless motion capture system's (OpenCap) derived lower extremity kinematics during common return-to-sport tasks, comparing it to an established optoelectronic motion capture system. Athletes with prior anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (12–18 months post-surgery) performed three movements: a jump-landing-rebound, single-leg hop, and lateral-vertical hop. Kinematics were recorded concurrently with two smartphones running OpenCap's software and with a 10-camera, marker-based motion capture system. Validity of lower extremity joint kinematics was assessed across 437 recorded trials using measures of agreement (coefficient of multiple correlation: CMC) and error (mean absolute error: MAE, root mean squared error: RMSE) across the time series of movement. Agreement was best in the sagittal plane for the knee and hip in all movements (CMC > 0.94), followed by the ankle (CMC = 0.84–0.93). Lower agreement was observed for frontal (CMC = 0.47–0.78) and transverse (CMC = 0.51–0.6) plane motion. OpenCap presented a grand mean error of 3.85° (MAE) and 4.34° (RMSE) across all joint angles and movements. These results were comparable to other available markerless systems. Most notably, OpenCap's user-friendly interface, free software, and small physical footprint have the potential to extend motion analysis applications beyond conventional biomechanics labs, thus enhancing the accessibility for a diverse range of users. One of the most significant developments in prosthetic knee technology has been the introduction of the Microprocessor-Controlled Prosthetic Knee (MPK). However, there is a lack of consensus over how different types of MPKs affect performance in different ambulation modes. In this study, we investigated the biomechanical differences in ramp and stair maneuvers when an individual with transfemoral amputation wears three commercial MPKs: the Össur Power Knee, the Össur Rheo Knee and the Ottobock C-Leg 4. The primary outcome variable for this study was the lower limb biological joint work, inclusive of the intact leg and prosthetic side hip. We hypothesized that (1) the Power Knee would result in lower biological work during ascent activities than the C-Leg and Rheo, both passive MPKs, and (2) the C-Leg and Rheo would result in lower biological work during descent activities than the Power Knee. During ramp ascent, the C-Leg was associated with lower biological joint work (p < 0.05) than the Power Knee. However, this relationship did not hold during stair ascent, where the Power Knee showed advantages for stair ascent with net reductions in biological joint work of 14.1% and 23.3% compared to the Rheo and C-leg, respectively. There were no significant differences in biological joint work between the knees during ramp and stair descent, indicating that choice of MPK may not be as important for descent activities. Recent advancements in computer vision and machine learning enable autonomous measurement of total knee arthroplasty kinematics through single-plane fluoroscopy. However, symmetric components present challenges in optimization routines, causing "symmetry traps" and ambiguous poses. Achieving clinically robust kinematics measurement requires addressing this issue. We devised an algorithm that converts a "true" pose to its corresponding "symmetry trap" orientation. From a dataset of nearly 13,000 human supervised kinematics, this algorithm constructs an augmented dataset of "true" and "symmetry trap" kinematics, used to train eight classification machine learning algorithms. The outputs from the highest-performing algorithm classify kinematics sequences as 'obviously true' or 'potentially ambiguous.' We construct a spline through 'obviously true' poses, and 'ambiguous' poses are compared to the spline to determine correct orientation. The machine learning algorithms achieved 88–94% accuracy on our internal test set and 91–93% on our external test set. Applying our spline algorithm to kinematics sequences yielded 91.1% accuracy, 94% specificity, but 67% sensitivity. The accuracy of standard ML algorithms for implants within 5 degrees of a pure-lateral view was 71%, rising to 88% beyond 5 degrees. This pioneering study systematizes addressing model-image registration issues with symmetric tibial implants. High accuracy suggests potential use of ML algorithms to mitigate shape-ambiguity errors in pose measurements from single-plane fluoroscopy. Our results also suggest an imaging protocol for measuring kinematics that favors more oblique viewing angles, which could further disambiguate "true" and "symmetry trap" poses. Researchers have extensively studied the biomechanics and anthropometrics of fast bowling in men's cricket, but there is still limited research in women's cricket. This study describes and compares the anthropometric qualities and bowling biomechanics between elite male and female fast bowlers. An inertial measurement system was used to collect three-dimensional biomechanical data for 20 elite fast bowlers (13 males and seven females). Kinematic data was captured at one step before back foot contact, back foot contact, front foot contact, ball release to one step after ball release. Anthropometric measurements included body segment lengths, mass, body fat (BF%) and muscle mass (MM%). The student t -test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for analyses. Hotelling's T2 statistic was calculated to control Type I error during multiple comparisons (p = 0.045). Males and females differed in overall height, limb length, BF% and MM%. Females presented with slower ball release speeds (p = 0.001). Biomechanically, the females were more front-on when approaching the delivery stride and then initiated pelvis and trunk rotation during the delivery stride, not seen in the males. Females and males have a similar magnitude of trunk side-flexion, but females present with a different strategy than males (p = 0.038). Females presented with increased front knee extension at ball release (p = 0.05). The findings from this study emphasise the differences between male and female fast bowlers and suggest that the coaching principles used in male fast bowling may not be relevant to female fast bowlers. Complex musculoskeletal complications in children with hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) include pain, proprioception deficits, and joint instability, which may result in movement dysfunction during walking. However, no studies have explored the inter-joint coordination deficits in children with HSD. The purpose of this study was to determine the lower extremity inter-joint coupling angles, patterns, and variability during walking in children with HSD compared to children without HSD (non-HSD). Ankle, knee, and hip kinematics during the stance phase of walking in 18 children with HSD and 18 children without HSD were measured using three-dimensional motion analysis. Coupling angles, patterns, and variability of hip-knee, hip-ankle, and knee-ankle were quantified in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes using vector coding techniques. Statistical modeling of coupling angles on sine and cosine scales and bootstrapped standard errors were used to compare coupling angles between HSD and non-HSD groups. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance and statistical non-parametric mapping two-sample t-tests were used to compare the coupling patterns and variability between HSD and non-HSD groups, respectively. Our results indicated that coupling angles, patterns, and variability were not significantly different between the groups. These findings suggest that lower extremity inter-joint coordination and its variability during walking might not be a promising area for further research or intervention in children with HSD. Further research could use other biomechanical methods to investigate coordination deficits in pediatric patients with HSD, and how aging and disease progression are associated with coordination deficits in individuals with HSD. Precise measurement of joint-level motion from stereo-radiography facilitates understanding of human movement. Conventional procedures for kinematic tracking require significant manual effort and are time intensive. The current work introduces a method for fully automatic tracking of native knee kinematics from stereo-radiography sequences. The framework consists of three computational steps. First, biplanar radiograph frames are annotated with segmentation maps and key points using a convolutional neural network. Next, initial bone pose estimates are acquired by solving a polynomial optimization problem constructed from annotated key points and anatomic landmarks from digitized models. A semidefinite relaxation is formulated to realize the global minimum of the non-convex problem. Pose estimates are then refined by registering computed tomography-based digitally reconstructed radiographs to masked radiographs. A novel rendering method is also introduced which enables generating digitally reconstructed radiographs from computed tomography scans with inconsistent slice widths. The automatic tracking framework was evaluated with stereo-radiography trials manually tracked with model-image registration, and with frames which capture a synthetic leg phantom. The tracking method produced pose estimates which were consistently similar to manually tracked values; and demonstrated pose errors below 1.0 degree or millimeter for all femur and tibia degrees of freedom in phantom trials. Falls are a major public health concern, with older women being at the greatest risk to experience a fall. Step descent increases the likelihood of a fall injury, yet the influence of age and fall history on lower extremity kinematics have not been extensively studied. The purpose of this study was to examine lower extremity and foot kinematics of women with and without a fall history during single step descent. Hip, knee, and foot kinematics of young women (n = 15, age = 22.6 ± 3.2 years), older women with no recent falls (n = 15, age = 71.6 ± 4.4 years), and older women with a fall history (n = 15, age = 71.5 ± 5.0 years) as they descended a 17 cm step were examined. Differences in initial contact angles and ROM during landing were examined with between group MANOVA tests. Distal foot initial contact angles were not significant between groups. For range of motion, both older groups went through greater hip extension (p = 0.003, partial η2 = 0.25), but less hip adduction (p = 0.002, partial η2 = 0.27) and less lateral midfoot dorsiflexion (p = 0.001, partial η2 = 0.28) than the younger women. The older fall group had reduced knee flexion (p = 0.004, partial η2 = 0.23) than the younger group, and the older non-fallers slightly plantarflexed at the medial midfoot (p = 0.005, partial η2 = 0.23) while the young women dorsiflexed. The landing phase ROM differences exhibited by the older adult groups may increase the likelihood of a misstep, which may result in a fall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In locomotion, the relative phasing of the limbs changes with speed and provides valuable insight to neuromuscular control of gait. At present, it is unknown if individuals trained in sprinting coordinate their limbs differently than runners from other athletic backgrounds. Therefore, we aimed to characterize the effects of speed and skill on lower limb coordination. Twenty-five physically active (PA) and fifteen track and field (TF) athletes performed 40 m running trials at self-selected speeds, from jogging to maximal sprinting. We measured lower limb kinematics during steady-speed running, and quantified coordination using continuous relative phase (CRP) methods for interlimb pairs (Thigh-Thigh, Shank-Shank) and intralimb pairs (Shank-Thigh). Regression techniques showed between-group differences in scaling of coordination with speed during the stance phase, such that coordination was significantly more antiphase during jogging and running speeds in TF. During flight the scaling between groups was similar, but there were persistent and significant differences in coordination across all speeds. Comparing only the maximal speed trials, we found interlimb coordination was significantly more antiphase for TF in both stance and flight. In all cases, Shank-Shank coordination showed the largest between-group differences. Our results demonstrate the importance of interlimb coordination at maximal sprint speed, particularly during the flight phase and between shank segments. Between-group differences in coordination at slower speeds suggest a selective tuning of coordination in trained runners. We speculate differences in limb coordination are due to acquired motor patterns from optimizing forward velocity and its mechanical determinants, which differ particularly during flight/swing and between shank segments. Segment coordinate systems (CSs) of marker-based multi-segment foot models are used to measure foot kinematics, however their relationship to the underlying bony anatomy is barely studied. The aim of this study was to compare marker-based CSs (MCSs) with bone morphology-based CSs (BCSs) for the hindfoot and forefoot. Markers were placed on the right foot of fifteen healthy adults according to the Oxford, Rizzoli and Amsterdam Foot Model (OFM, RFM and AFM, respectively). A CT scan was made while the foot was loaded in a simulated weight-bearing device. BCSs were based on axes of inertia. The orientation difference between BCSs and MCSs was quantified in helical and 3D Euler angles. To determine whether the marker models were able to capture inter-subject variability in bone poses, linear regressions were performed. Compared to the hindfoot BCS, all MCSs were more toward plantar flexion and internal rotation, and RFM was also oriented toward more inversion. Compared to the forefoot BCS, OFM and RFM were oriented more toward dorsal and plantar flexion, respectively, and internal rotation, while AFM was not statistically different in the sagittal and transverse plane. In the frontal plane, OFM was more toward eversion and RFM and AFM more toward inversion compared to BCS. Inter-subject bone pose variability was captured with RFM and AFM in most planes of the hindfoot and forefoot, while this variability was not captured by OFM. Prior studies suggest that native (born to at least one deaf or signing parent) and non-native signers have different musculoskeletal health outcomes from signing, but the individual and combined biomechanical factors driving these differences are not fully understood. Such group differences in signing may be explained by the five biomechanical factors of American Sign Language that have been previously identified: ballistic signing, hand and wrist deviations, work envelope, muscle tension, and "micro" rests. Prior work used motion capture and surface electromyography to collect joint kinematics and muscle activations, respectively, from ten native and thirteen non-native signers as they signed for 7.5 min. Each factor was individually compared between groups. A factor analysis was used to determine the relative contributions of each biomechanical factor between signing groups. No significant differences were found between groups for ballistic signing, hand and wrist deviations, work envelope volume, excursions from recommended work envelope, muscle tension, or "micro" rests. Factor analysis revealed that "micro" rests had the strongest contribution for both groups, while hand and wrist deviations had the weakest contribution. Muscle tension and work envelope had stronger contributions for native compared to non-native signers, while ballistic signing had a stronger contribution for non-native compared to native signers. Using a factor analysis enabled discernment of relative contributions of biomechanical variables across native and non-native signers that could not be detected through isolated analysis of individual measures. Closed loop kinematic chain approaches are commonly used to assess scapular kinematics but with heterogeneous ellipsoid calibration procedures. This study aimed to assess whether an ellipsoid surface can model the scapulothoracic sliding plane and determine the optimal number of static poses to calibrate the ellipsoid parameters. An intracortical pin with a rigid cluster of four reflective markers was inserted into the left scapular spine of two healthy males (P1 and P2). They performed arm elevations, internal rotations, ball throwing, hockey shooting, and eating movements. Ellipsoid radii and center location were functionally calibrated for each participant and each movement, either based on all frames of a movement or based on a reduced number of frames (from 3 to 200 equally position-distributed frames). Across both participants and all movements, ellipsoid radii varied up to 10.2 cm, 3.9 cm, and 18.4 cm in the antero-posterior, medio-lateral, and cranio-caudal directions, respectively. When all frames of a movement were considered for calibration, the median scapula-to-ellipsoid distance was, on average, 0.52 mm and 0.38 mm for P1 and P2, respectively. When only five frames were considered for ellipsoid calibration, the scapula-to-ellipsoid median distance slightly increased with 0.57 mm and 0.47 mm for P1 and P2, respectively. To conclude, this study highlights that an ellipsoid surface may effectively be appropriate to model the scapulothoracic sliding plane, especially when the calibration is functional, participant- and movement-specific. Running studies, particularly those examining footwear effects, commonly use warm-up or familiarization periods prior to testing. There is no consensus for how long these familiarization periods should be to ensure stable running kinematics prior to experimental testing in novel footwear. The aim of this study was to assess the time to stability of kinematic variables during treadmill running in novel compared to habitual neutral cushion footwear in distance runners. A cross-sectional analysis of 15 distance runners (seven women, eight men) during 10-minute treadmill running bouts in minimal, neutral cushion, and maximal cushioned footwear was conducted while lower extremity kinematics were recorded for 10 s at the end of each minute. Test-retest intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC, 3, k) were used to detect time to stability in cadence, vertical oscillation, peak dorsiflexion angle, peak eversion angle, and peak knee flexion angle. All kinematic variables were stabilized within two to three minutes (ICC < 0.90) and the type of novel footwear did not influence time to stability. These findings indicate that a two to three minute, ∼310–540 steps, depending on running cadence, familiarization period, regardless of footwear novelty, is sufficient for stabilization of these kinematic variables during treadmill running. Lifting is a significant risk factor for low back pain (LBP). Different biomechanical factors including spinal loads, kinematics, and muscle electromyography (EMG) activities have previously been investigated during lifting activities in LBP patients and asymptomatic individuals to identify their association with LBP. However, the findings were contradictory and inconclusive. Accurate and subject-specific prediction of spinal loads is crucial for understanding, diagnosing, planning tailored treatments, and preventing recurrent pain in LBP patients. Therefore, the present study aimed to estimate the L5-S1 compressive and resultant shear loads in 19 healthy and 17 non-specific chronic LBP individuals during various static load-holding tasks (holding a 10 kg box at hip, chest, and head height) using full-body and personalized musculoskeletal models driven by subject-specific in vivo kinematic/kinetic, EMG, and physiological cross-sectional areas (PCSAs) data. These biomechanical characteristics were concurrently analyzed to identify potential differences between the two groups. Statistical analyses showed that LBP had almost no significant effect on the range of motion (trunk, lumbar, pelvis), PCSA, and EMG. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in the predicted L5-S1 loads. However, as the task became more demanding, by elevating the hand-load from hip to head, LBP patients experienced significant increases in both compressive (33 %, p = 0.00) and shear (25 %, p = 0.02) loads, while asymptomatic individuals showed significant increases only in compressive loads (30 %, p = 0.01). This suggests that engaging in more challenging activities could potentially magnify the effect of LBP on the biomechanical factors and increase their discrimination capacity between LBP and asymptomatic individuals. Upper extremity kinematics are important for understanding functional ability and performance improvements. The Box and Blocks test (BBT) is a standardized functional test used to measure manual dexterity when evaluating children or patients following a stroke. The BBT measures the number of blocks moved in one minute and therefore, kinematic measures and compensatory strategies cannot be assessed. This study examined the correlation between upper extremity kinematics and cycle time per block movement during the BBT in three age groups (7-, 9-, and 11-year-olds). Participants completed one BBT session while test scores and kinematic measures (hand velocity and position and shoulder, elbow, and wrist range of motion and peak joint angles) were captured using standard three-dimensional motion capture techniques. Kinematic measures were determined for block movements during the middle of each BBT trial. A mixed-effects model was used to identify group differences (α = 0.05). BBT score was different (p = 0.005) between the 7- (44.88 ± 6.03) and the 11-year-old age group (56.95 ± 8.37) along with peak shoulder flexion (p = 0.024) and abduction (p = 0.022). Peak elbow flexion was different (p = 0.049) between the 9- and 11-year-old age groups. No differences were seen between the 7- and 9-year-old age groups. Pearson's Correlation Coefficients were determined between cycle time and each significant kinematic measure, where the cycle time is specific to each block movement (BBT score) and is correlated to the BBT score. This resulted in weak correlations for all the comparisons. Therefore, using BBT score alone is not representative of UE kinematics and both should be collected during this task to provide insight into movement mechanics in a pediatric population. Differences in lower limb kinematics between males and females during functional activities may be attributed to sex differences in the incidence of patellofemoral pain, which is more common in females. To better comprehend the knee joint motion, it is necessary to understand both inter-segmental coordination patterns and angular amplitude. This exploratory study aimed to assess sex differences in pelvis–thigh and thigh–shank coordination patterns in the frontal and horizontal planes during walking. Data regarding the kinematic characteristics of the pelvis, thigh, and shank segments were collected from 26 males and 26 females performing walking at self-selected speeds using a 3D motion capture system. Furthermore, we compared the kinematics of the pelvis, thigh, and shank during walking as well as the pelvis–thigh and thigh–shank coordination patterns in the frontal and horizontal planes during the stance phase between males and females. Compared to males, females had greater thigh adduction (p < 0.001) and internal rotation (p < 0.001) throughout the stance phase; significantly greater frequency of the pelvis–thigh anti-phase pattern in the frontal plane in the early (p = 0.002) and mid-stance (p = 0.003); and significantly greater thigh–shank anti-phase pattern in the frontal plane in the early (p = 0.001) and mid-stance (p = 0.015). These results suggest the presence of sex differences in the inter-segmental coordination of the pelvis and lower limb during walking. However, as this study could not determine a causal relationship between female sex and knee joint injury, further longitudinal studies are needed to determine the effects of differences in coordination patterns on the pathophysiology of the injury and pain generation. Calculating upper extremity kinematics during overhead movements presents with problems typically not seen for the lower extremity due to the large range of motion. Due to these unique issues, different rotation sequences have been suggested to circumvent challenges due to gimbal lock (GL) and angle coherence (AC). The purpose of this study is to determine the most appropriate rotation sequence for shoulder angle calculation during a volleyball attack. METHODS: 15 healthy experienced volleyball players (women = 8) performed 5 attacks off a stationary ball. A 12-camera 3D motion capture system was utilized to record trunk and arm kinematics to compare joint angles calculated using the YXY, ZXY, XZY, YXZ, ZYX, and XYZ rotation sequences. Instances of GL and AC inconsistences were marked for each trial. The last 3 trials were used for analysis. RESULTS: The YXY and XYZ sequences presented with the least total number of errors (12 and 5, respectively). 5 instances of GL were present in the XYZ sequence while none were recorded for the YXY sequence. All other sequences returned incoherent angles that greatly exceeded known ranges of motion. CONCLUSION: When performing kinematic analyses during a volleyball attack, researchers should adhere to ISB recommendations and employ the Eulerian YXY sequence for calculations. Improved understanding is required on how hip fracture risk is influenced by landing configuration. We examined how hip impact dynamics was affected by hip joint kinematics during simulated sideways falls. Twelve young adults (7 males, 5 females) of mean age 23.5 (SD = 1.5) years, participated in pelvis release experiments. Trials were acquired with the hip flexed 15° and 30° for each of three hip rotations: +15° ("external rotation"), 0°, and −15° ("internal rotation"). During falls, force–deformation data of the pelvis were recorded. Outcome variables included the peak hip impact force (F experimental ) and effective stiffness of the pelvis (k 1 s t , k secant , and k ms ) determined with different methods suggested in literature, and predicted hip impact force during a fall from standing height (F 1 s t , F secant and F ms ). The two-way repeated-measures ANOVA was used to test whether these variables were associated with hip joint angles. The F experimental , k secant and F secant were associated with hip rotation (F = 5.587, p = 0.005; F = 9.278, p < 0.0005; F = 5.778, p = 0.004, respectively), and 15 %, 31 % and 17 % smaller in 15° external than internal rotation (848 versus 998 N; 24.6 versus 35.6 kN/m; 2,637 versus 3,170 N, respectively). However, none of the outcome variables were associated with hip flexion (p > 0.05). Furthermore, there were no interactions between the hip rotation and flexion for all outcome variables (p > 0.05). It was found that the Auxivo LiftSuit reduced the load on the back and hip muscles when lifting heavy loads, but its effect on lower body kinematics, joint moments, and self-reported ratings was unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of this passive lift-exoskeleton design, on lower body kinematics, joint moments, and self-reported ratings during lifting of heavy loads. Twenty healthy subjects performed lifting of heavy loads with and without the exoskeleton under surveillance of a motion capture system. Medium and maximum level adjustments of the exoskeleton, as well as no exoskeleton use were analyzed. Our results indicate significant reduction (p <.01) in pelvis segment tilt and hip flexion ROM with the exoskeleton at maximum level adjustment in males during lifting. Lumbosacral flexion moment ranges were significantly decreased (p <.013) with the exoskeleton at maximum and medium level adjustment in males during lifting. The general user impressions were mostly positive, with participants reporting that it was easier to perform the task with the exoskeleton than without it (p <.0.001), and preferring and recommending the exoskeleton for the task. Although our findings may suggest negative effects of the Auxivo LiftSuit in males and females due to a ROM restriction and loose fit, respectively, it does not mean that the Auxivo LiftSuit is not useful for lifting tasks. Body weight unloading (BWU) is used in rehabilitation/training settings to reduce kinetic requirements, however different BWU methods may be unequally capable of preserving biomechanical movement patterns. Biomechanical analysis of both kinetic and kinematic movement trajectories rather than discrete variables has not previously been performed to describe the effect of BWU on gait patterns during horizontal walking. The aim of the present study was to investigate how robot-assisted BWU producing an dynamic unloading force on the body centre of mass, affects kinematic, kinetic, and spatiotemporal gait parameters in healthy young adults by use of time-continuous analysis. Twenty participants walked overground in a 3-D motion-capture lab at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 % BWU at a self-selected speed. Vertical and anterior-posterior ground reaction forces (GRFs) and lower limb internal joint moments were obtained during the stance phase, while joint angles were obtained during entire strides. Time-continuous data were analysed using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) and discrete data using conventional statistics to compare different BWU conditions by means of One-Way Repeated Measures Anova. With increasing BWU, corresponding reductions were observed for GRFs, internal joint moments, joint angles, walking speed, stride/step length and cadence. Observed effects were partially caused by decreased walking speed and increased BWU. While amplitude reductions were observed for kinetic and kinematic variables, trajectory shapes were largely preserved. In conclusion, dynamic robot-assisted BWU enables reduced kinetic requirements without distorting biomechanically normal gait patterns during overground walking in young healthy adults. Exercise therapy for individuals with rotator cuff tears fails in approximately 25.0 % of cases. One reason for failure of exercise therapy may be the inability to strengthen and balance the muscle forces crossing the glenohumeral joint that act to center the humeral head on the glenoid. The objective of the current study was to compare the magnitude and orientation of the net muscle force pre- and post-exercise therapy between subjects successfully and unsuccessfully (e.g. eventually underwent surgery) treated with a 12-week individualized exercise therapy program. Twelve computational musculoskeletal models (n = 6 successful, n = 6 unsuccessful) were developed in OpenSim (v4.0) that incorporated subject specific tear characteristics, muscle peak isometric force, in-vivo kinematics and bony morphology. The models were driven with experimental kinematics and the magnitude and orientation of the net muscle force was determined during scapular plane abduction at pre- and post-exercise therapy timepoints. Subjects unsuccessfully treated had less inferiorly oriented net muscle forces pre- and post-exercise therapy compared to subjects successfully treated (p = 0.039 & 0.045, respectively). No differences were observed in the magnitude of the net muscle force (p > 0.05). The current study developed novel computational musculoskeletal models with subject specific inputs capable of distinguishing between subjects successfully and unsuccessfully treated with exercise therapy. A less inferiorly oriented net muscle force in subjects unsuccessfully treated may increase the risk of superior migration leading to impingement. Implant malalignment has been reported to be a primary reason for revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In addition, altered muscle coordination patterns are commonly observed in TKA patients, which is thought to alter knee contact loads. A comprehensive understanding of the influence of surgical implantation and muscle recruitment strategies on joint contact mechanics is crucial to improve surgical techniques, increase implant longevity, and inform rehabilitation protocols. In this study, a detailed musculoskeletal model with a 12 degrees of freedom knee was developed to represent a TKA subject from the CAMS-Knee datasets. Using motion capture and ground reaction force data, a level walking cycle was simulated and the joint movement and loading patterns were estimated using a novel technique for concurrent optimization of muscle activations and joint kinematics. In addition, over 12′000 Monte Carlo simulations were performed to predict knee contact mechanics during walking, considering numerous combinations of implant alignment and muscle activation scenarios. Validation of our baseline simulation showed good agreement between the model kinematics and loading patterns against the in vivo data. Our analyses reveal a considerable impact of implant alignment on the joint kinematics, while variation in muscle activation strategies mainly affects knee contact loading. Moreover, our results indicate that high knee compressive forces do not necessarily originate from extreme kinematics and vice versa. This study provides an improved understanding of the complex inter-relationships between loading and movement patterns resulting from different surgical implantation and muscle coordination strategies and presents a validated framework towards population-based modelling in TKA. Musculoskeletal models are commonly used to estimate in vivo spinal loads under various loading conditions. Typically, participant-specific measured kinematics (PSMK) are coupled with participant-specific models, but obtaining PSMK data can be costly and infeasible in large studies or clinical practice. Thus, we evaluated two alternative methods to estimate spinal loads without PSMK: 1) ensemble average kinematics (EAK) based on kinematics from all participants; and 2) using separately measured individual kinematics (SMIK) from multiple other participants as inputs, then averaging the resulting loads. This study compares the dynamic spine loading patterns and peak loads in older adults performing five lifting tasks using PSMK, EAK and SMIK. Median root mean square errors of EAK and SMIK methods versus PSMK ranged from 18 to 72% body weight for compressive loads and from 2 to 25% body weight for shear loads, with median cross-correlations ranging from 0.931 to 0.991. The root mean square errors and cross-correlations between repeated PSMK trials fell within similar ranges. Compressive peak loads evaluated by EAK and SMIK were not different than PSMK in 12 of 15 cases, while by comparison repeated PSMK trials were not different in 13 of 15 cases. Overall, the resulting spine loading magnitudes and profiles using EAK or SMIK were not notably different than using a PSMK approach, and differences were not greater than between two PSMK trials. Thus, these findings indicate that these approaches may be used to make reasonable estimates of dynamic spinal loading without direct measurement of participant kinematics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Obesity has been associated to increase the risk of low back disorders. Previous musculoskeletal models simulating the effect of body weight on intervertebral joint loads have assumed identical body postures for obese and normal-weight individuals during a given physical activity. Our recent kinematic-measurement studies, however, indicate that obese individuals adapt different body postures (segmental orientations) than normal-weight ones when performing load-reaching activities. The present study, therefore, used a subject- and kinematics-specific musculoskeletal modeling approach to compare spinal loads of nine normal-weight and nine obese individuals each performing twelve static two-handed load-reaching activities at different hand heights, anterior distances, and asymmetry angles (total of 12 tasks × 18 subjects = 216 model simulations). Each model incorporated personalized muscle architectures, body mass distributions, and full-body kinematics for each subject and task. Results indicated that even when accounting for subject-specific body kinematics obese individuals experienced significantly larger (by ∼38% in average) L5-S1 compression (2305 ± 468 N versus 1674 ± 337 N) and shear (508 ± 111 N versus 705 ± 150 N) loads during all reaching activities (p < 0.05 for all hand positions). This average difference of ∼38% was similar to the results obtained from previous modeling investigations that neglected kinematics differences between the two weight groups. Moreover, there was no significant interaction effect between body weight and hand position on the spinal loads; indicating that the effect of body weight on L5-S1 loads was not dependent on the position of hands. Laboratory-based gait analyses traditionally analyze baseline characteristics in individuals while they are barefoot. However, there is limited evidence on whether individuals' preferred walking shoes alter lower extremity kinematics during over-ground walking. We present novel evidence regarding the effects of shoes on lower extremity kinematics in healthy, young adults. Fifteen volunteers participated in this study which obtained lower extremity kinematic data on two over-ground walking conditions (barefoot and preferred shoes). Gait velocity, stance width, and stride length, along with sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle angular positions were computed; hip, knee, and ankle positions were normalized to 100% of the stride. Dependent t-tests were used to compare baseline and shoe conditions for gait velocity and stance width; a two-way analysis of variance was used for stride length. A point-by-point Model Statistic analysis was used to identify significant differences in angular joint positions between conditions. Our results indicate that shoes affected the ankle angular joint position for more than half of the gait cycle, and affected the knee angular joint position, but only for approximately 20% of the cycle. The hip was unaffected by shoes. Gait velocity and stance width were statistically significant, with gait velocity being greater for shoes, and stance width being greater while barefoot. Stride length was not statistically significant between conditions. These outcomes suggest that researchers should use caution if they are considering a barefoot condition as a 'baseline' for healthy, young adults, as there are marked changes in the ankle, and in traditional gait metrics. The purpose of this study was to compare human static pose estimation data measured with a single-view image-based system and a multi-camera marker-based system. Thirty participants (20 male/10 female, mean ± standard deviation 29.1 ± 10.0 years old, 1.75 ± 0.10 m tall, 79.1 ± 18.0 kg) performed six repetitions each of static holds of arm-raises and squats, in a different orientation for each repetition. These trials were captured simultaneously with a 120-Hz 12-camera marker-based system and a variable-frequency single-view image-based system. Data for each trial were time-synchronized between the two systems using a near-infrared LED-light that was visible to both systems. Discrete measurements of bilateral shoulder angles during arm-raises and bilateral knee angles during squats were compared between the systems using Bland-Altman plots and descriptive statistics. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated, comparing the participant trial mean values across systems. Finally, a two-way ANOVA was used to examine whether participant orientation in the capture volume significantly affected either system. Biases for discrete measurements ranged in magnitude from 1.3 to 1.9°, and standard deviations of the differences between systems ranged from 2.4 to 4.7°. Pearson correlation coefficients were all above 0.97, and the ANOVA was unable to find a statistically significant orientation effect for either system. Thus, the marker-based and image-based systems produced similar measurements of static shoulder and knee angles. Future work should examine more complex measurements using volumetric scan-based models and also investigate the ability of single-view image-based systems to measure dynamic movements. Scapular kinematic estimates are altered by soft tissue artefacts, therefore experimental and numerical methods should be developed to improve their accuracy. This study aimed to assess the influence of weights applied to the scapula markers within a closed-loop multibody kinematic optimization on scapular kinematic estimates. Fifteen healthy volunteers performed static postures mimicking analytical, daily living and sport movements. Scapulo-thoracic angles were computed either from a scapula locator as the reference, or from a closed-loop multibody-kinematic optimization (MKO) including a participant-specific point-on-ellipsoid scapulothoracic joint. Weights applied to scapula markers in the MKO were optimized to minimize the difference in scapular orientation from the reference. Optimizing weighting sets significantly (p < 0.0001) improved scapular orientation from 0.9° to 12.1° in comparison to scapular kinematics estimated with non-optimized weighting sets. The mean optimized weighting set contained no neglectable weight for all markers from the acromion to the medial border of the scapular spine but showed no significant difference (p = 0.547) compared to homogeneous weights. Optimized weighting sets were participant- and movement- specific. To conclude, homogenous weights applied on redundant markers located from acromion to scapular medial border spine are recommended when estimating scapular kinematics in upper limb MKO. Vision-based methods using RGB inputs for human pose estimation have grown in recent years but have undergone limited testing in clinical and biomechanics research areas like gait analysis. The purpose of the present study was to compare lower extremity kinematics during overground gait between a traditional marker-based approach and a commercial multi-view markerless system in a sample of subjects including young adults, older adults, and adults diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. A convenience sample of 35 adults between the age of 18–85 years were included in this study, yielding a total of 114 trials and 228 gait cycles that were compared between systems. A total of 30 time normalized waveforms, including three-dimensional joint centers, segment angles, and joint angles were compared between systems using root mean-squared error (RMSE), range of motion difference (ΔROM), Pearson correlation coefficients (r), and interclass correlation coefficients (ICC). RMSEs for joint center positions were less than 28 mm in all joints with correlations indicating good to excellent agreement. RMSEs for segment and joint angles were in range of previous results, with highest agreement between systems in the sagittal plane. ΔROM differences were within reference values that characterize clinical groups like Parkinson's disease, stroke, or knee osteoarthritis. Further improvements in pelvis tracking, markerless keypoint model definitions, and standardization of comparison study protocols are needed. Wheelchair users (WCUs) face high rates of shoulder overuse injuries. As exercise is recommended to reduce cardiovascular disease prevalent among WCUs, it is becoming increasingly important to understand the mechanisms behind shoulder soft-tissue injury in WCUs. Understanding the kinetics and kinematics during upper-limb propulsion is the first step toward evaluating soft-tissue injury risk in WCUs. This paper examines continuous kinetic and kinematic data available in the literature. Attach-unit and recumbent handcycling are examined and compared. Athletic modes of propulsion such as recumbent handcycling are important considering the higher contact forces, speed, and power outputs experienced during these activities that could put users at increased risk of injury. Understanding the underlying kinetics and kinematics during various propulsion modes can lend insight into shoulder loading, and therefore injury risk, during these activities and inform future exercise guidelines for WCUs. Severe and fatal falls involving ladders commonly occur during transitions across the ladder and another support surface. Slipping is a common initiating event in ladder falls. This study characterized the friction requirements and body kinematics of descending roof-to-ladder transitions with and without a walk-through extension. Healthy adults who regularly climb ladders (n = 17) completed descending roof-to-ladder transitions, while foot-rung kinetics and body kinematics were recorded. The peak required coefficient of friction (RCOF) with respect to the plane of the shoe sole was calculated. The RCOF and body angle were calculated using their resultant values and projections in the frontal and sagittal planes. Foot angle was calculated in the sagittal plane. Repeated-measures ANOVA determined that compared to a walk-through ladder, a traditional ladder was associated with a higher RCOF in the medial–lateral (ML) direction (F 1,1 6 = 190.07, p < 0.001) and a lower RCOF in the anterior-posterior (AP) direction (F 1,16 = 11.02, p = 0.004), but had no significant relationship with the resultant RCOF (F 1,16 = 0.098, p = 0.76). Spearman's rho tests performed across all testing configurations identified significant associations between foot angle and overall RCOF (r s = −0.724, p < 0.001), foot angle and AP RCOF (r s = −0.871, p < 0.001), and frontal plane body angle and ML RCOF (r s = 0.782, p < 0.001). Clustering in the data suggests that ladder attachments reduced frontal plane kinematics, which altered the direction of RCOF by reducing the medial–lateral component. Total temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement surgery aims to improve mandibular function, reduce pain and enhance quality of life in patients suffering from end-stage TMJ disorders. Traditional post-operative jaw evaluation is carried out using measurement of maximum interincisal opening distance; however, this can correlate poorly to joint function. The present study aimed to evaluate three-dimensional (3D) jaw motion during border movements and chewing in unilateral total TMJ replacement patients and healthy controls. Motion analysis experiments were performed on six unilateral total TMJ replacement patients and ten age-matched healthy controls. Subject-specific motion tracking plates worn by each participant were registered to CT scans of each participant's skull and mandible to enable anatomical mandibular kinematics measurement using an optoelectronic system. Participants performed 15 repetitions of maximal opening, protrusion, lateral excursions, and chewing cycles. Total TMJ replacement patients had significantly smaller incisal displacements at maximum mouth opening relative to the controls (median difference: 7.1 mm, p = 0.002) and decreased anterior translation of the prosthetic condyle (median difference: 10.5 mm, p = 0.002). When TMJ replacement subjects chewed using their contralateral molars, there was a significant increase in inferior condylar translation of the non-working condyle (median difference: 9.7 mm, p = 0.016). This study found that unilateral total TMJ replacement surgery was associated with mouth opening capacity within the range of healthy individuals, but reduced anterior movement of the prosthetic condyle and restricted protrusion and lateral excursions. The results provide future direction for prosthetic TMJ design to enhance postsurgical implant functionality and improve long-term clinical outcomes for prosthesis recipients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neither kinematic nor stiffness properties of the rib cage during thoracic spinal motion were investigated in previous studies, while being essential for the accurate validation of numerical models of the whole thorax. The aim of this in vitro study therefore was to quantify the kinematics and elastostatics of the human rib cage under defined boundary conditions. Eight fresh frozen human thoracic spine specimens (C7-L1, median age 55 years, ranging from 40 to 60 years) including entire rib cages were loaded quasi-statically in flexion/extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation using pure moments of 5 Nm. Relative motions of ribs, thoracic vertebrae, and sternal structures as well as strains on the ribs were measured using optical motion tracking of 150 reflective markers per specimen, while specimens were loaded displacement-controlled with a constant rate of 1°/s for 3.5 cycles. The third full cycle was used to determine relative angles and strains at full loading of the spine for all motion directions. Largest relative angles were found in the main loading directions with only small motions at the mid-thoracic levels. Highest strains of the intercostal spaces were detected in the anterior section of the lowest fourth of the rib cage, showing compressions and elongations of more than 10% in all spinal motion planes. Elastostatic rib deformation was generally less than 1%. Rib-sternum relative motions exhibited complex motion patterns, overall showing relative angles below 2°. The presence of multiple foot types has been used to explain the variability of foot structure observed among healthy adults. These foot types were determined by specific static morphologic features and included rectus (well aligned hindfoot/forefoot), planus (low arched), and cavus (high arched) foot types. Unique biomechanical characteristics of these foot types have been identified but reported differences in segmental foot kinematics among them has been inconsistent due to differences in neutral referencing and evaluation of only select discrete variables. This study used the radiographically-indexed Milwaukee Foot Model to evaluate differences in segmental foot kinematics among healthy adults with rectus, planus, and cavus feet based on the true bony alignment between segments. Based on the definitions of the individual foot types and due to conflicting results in previous literature, the primary study outcome was peak coronal hindfoot position during stance phase. Additionally, locally weighted regression smoothing with alpha-adjusted serial t -test analysis (LAAST) was used to compare these foot types across the entire gait cycle. Average peak hindfoot inversion was −1.6° ± 5.1°, 6.7° ± 3.5°, and 13.6° ± 4.6°, for the Planus, Rectus, and Cavus Groups, respectively. There were significant differences among all comparisons. Differences were observed between the Rectus and Planus Groups and Cavus and Planus Groups throughout the gait cycle. Additionally, the Planus Group had a premature peak velocity toward coronal varus and early transition toward valgus, likely due to a deficient windlass mechanism. This study evaluated the reactive biomechanical strategies associated with both upper- and lower-body (lead and trail limbs) following the first exposures to (un)expected stepdown at comfortable (1.22 ± 0.08 m/s) and fast (1.71 ± 0.11 m/s) walking velocities. Eleven healthy adults completed 34 trails per walking velocity over an 8-m, custom-built track with two forceplates embedded in its center. For the expected stepdown, the track was lowered by 0-, −10- and −20-cm from the site of the second forceplate, whereas the unexpected stepdown was created by camouflaging the second forceplate (−10-cm). Two-way repeated-measurement ANOVAs detected no velocity-related effects of stepdown on kinematic and kinetic parameters during lead limb stance-phase, and on the trail limb stepping kinematics. However, analyses of significant interactions revealed greater peak flexion angles across the trunk and the trail limb joints (hip, knee and ankle) in unexpected versus expected stepdown conditions at a faster walking velocity. The −10-cm unexpected stepdown (main effect) had a greater influence on locomotor behavior compared to expected conditions due mainly to the absence of predictive adjustments, reflected by a significant decrease in peak knee flexion, contact time and vertical impulse during stance-phase. Walking faster (main effect) was associated with an increase in hip peak flexion and net anteroposterior impulse, and a decrease in contact time and vertical impulse during stepdown. The trail limb, in response, swung forward faster, generating a larger and faster recovery step. However, such reactive stepping following unexpected stepdown was yet a sparse compensation for an unstable body configuration, assessed by significantly smaller step width and anteroposterior margin-of-stability at foot-contact in the first-recovery-step compared with expected conditions. These findings depict the impact of the expectedness of stepdown onset on modulation of global dynamic postural control for a successful accommodation of (un)expected surface elevation changes in young, healthy adults. The proportions of older and obese people are increasing in both the general and working populations worldwide. Older and obese individuals are more susceptible to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in comparison with healthy, younger individuals. Manual material handling (MMH) is associated with the development of work-related MSDs. Although previous research has suggested that one-handed carrying is a particularly undesirable method of MMH, the effects of one-handed carrying on trunk kinetics and kinematics among older and/or obese people have not been adequately studied. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of age and obesity on trunk angles and moments during dominant side one-handed carrying of various load magnitudes. Twenty (20) participants divided into four groups with respect to age (young and older) and obesity (obese and non-obese) carried different loads (No-load [0 kg], Light [5.67 kg], and Heavy [10.21 kg]) in their dominant hand for approximately 6 m. Three-dimensional (3D) trunk angles and moments approximately about the L4/L5 vertebral segment were calculated using Visual3D. The findings indicated that while carrying a load in the dominant hand plays an important role in changing trunk kinematics and kinetics, the results were not dependent on age and/or obesity category. Absolute moments were greatest among participants in the obese groups; however, these moments were mitigated when normalized to body weight and height (%BW * Ht). It has been suggested that the foot acts as a twisted osteoligamentous plate to control pronation and facilitate supination during walking. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an orthosis inspired by the concept of a foot's twisted osteoligamentous plate on the kinematics of foot-ankle complex. Thirty-five subjects underwent a kinematic assessment of the foot-ankle complex during walking using three different orthoses: (1) Twisted Plate Spring (TPS) orthosis: inspired by the concept of a twisted osteoligamentous plate shape and made with a spring-like material (carbon fiber); (2) Flat orthosis: control orthosis made of a non-elastic material with a non-inclined surface; and (3) Rigid orthosis: control orthosis made of a non-elastic material, with the same shape of the TPS. Repeated measures analyses of variance demonstrated that the TPS reduced the duration and magnitude of rearfoot eversion (p ≤ 0.03), increased rearfoot inversion relative to shank (p < 0.01), increased forefoot eversion relative to rearfoot (p < 0.01), and increased peak of plantar flexion of forefoot relative to rearfoot during the propulsive phase (p = 0.01) compared to Flat orthosis. The effects of the TPS were different from the Rigid orthosis, demonstrating that, alongside shape, material properties were a determinant factor for the obtained results. The findings of this study help clarify the role of a mechanism similar to a twisted osteoligamentous plate on controlling foot pronation and facilitating supination during the stance phase of walking. The aim of this study was to determine the level of agreement between spatiotemporal gait characteristics from a photoelectric system with different filter settings and high-speed video analysis during running on a treadmill at comfortable velocity. Forty-nine runners performed a running protocol on a treadmill at comfortable velocity. Two systems were used to determine spatiotemporal parameters (i.e. contact time [CT], flight time [FT], step frequency [SF] and step length [SL]) during running: OptoGait system and high-speed video analysis at 1000 Hz. The collected data was re-filtered in the OptoGait software by using nine different settings (i.e. 0_0, 1_1, 2_2, 3_3, 3_4, 4_4, 4_5, 5_4 and 5_5), and compared to those obtained through video analysis. The Pearson correlation analysis revealed very large correlations (r > 0.9, p < 0.001) in CT, FT, SF and SL between both systems, regardless of the OptoGait's filter settings. The ICC reported an almost perfect association (ICC > 0.9) for both SL and SF regardless of the filter setting. However, large variations between filter settings according to the data from video analysis were reported in CT and FT (0_0, 1_1 and 2_2 filter settings obtained an association ICC > 0.9, whereas other filters obtained lower ICCs). Bland-Altman plots revealed small bias and error and no presence of heteroscedasticity of error for 1_1 setting. In conclusion, the filter setting for the OptoGait system should be considered to minimize the bias and error of spatiotemporal parameters measurement. For running on a treadmill, the 1_1 filter setting is recommended if gait parameters are to be compared to a high-speed video analysis (1000 Hz). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurately assessing the dynamic kinematics of the skeletal wrist could advance our understanding of the normal and pathological wrist. Biplane videoradiography (BVR) has allowed investigators to study dynamic activities in the knee, hip, and shoulder joint; however, currently, BVR has not been utilized for the wrist joint because of the challenges associated with imaging multiple overlapping bones. Therefore, our aim was to develop a BVR procedure and to quantify its accuracy for evaluation of wrist kinematics. BVR was performed on six cadaveric forearms for one neutral static and six dynamic tasks, including flexion-extension, radial-ulnar deviation, circumduction, pronation, supination, and hammering. Optical motion capture (OMC) served as the gold standard for assessing accuracy. We propose a feedforward tracking methodology, which uses a combined model of metacarpals (second and third) for initialization of the third metacarpal (MC3). BVR-calculated kinematic parameters were found to be consistent with the OMC-calculated parameters, and the BVR/OMC agreement had submillimeter and sub-degree biases in tracking individual bones as well as the overall joint's rotation and translation. All dynamic tasks (except pronation task) showed a limit of agreement within 1.5° for overall rotation, and within 1.3 mm for overall translations. Pronation task had a 2.1° and 1.4 mm limit of agreement for rotation and translation measurement. The poorest precision was achieved in calculating the pronation-supination angle, and radial-ulnar and volar-dorsal translational components, although they were sub-degree and submillimeter. Climbing is an increasingly popular recreational and competitive behavior, engaged in a variety of environments and styles. However, injury rates are high in climbing populations, especially in the upper extremity and shoulder. Despite likely arising from an arboreal, climbing ancestor and being closely related to primates that are highly proficient climbers, the modern human shoulder has devolved a capacity for climbing. Limited biomechanical research exists on manual climbing performance. This study assessed kinematic and muscular demands during a bimanual climbing task that mimicked previous work on climbing primates. Thirty participants were recruited – 15 experienced and 15 inexperienced climbers. Motion capture and electromyography (EMG) measured elbow, thoracohumeral and trunk angles, and activity of twelve shoulder muscles, respectively, of the right-side while participants traversed across a horizontal climbing apparatus. Statistical parametric mapping was used to detect differences between groups in kinematics and muscle activity. Experienced climbers presented different joint motions that more closely mimicked the kinematics of climbing primates, including more elbow flexion (p = 0.0045) and internal rotation (p = 0.021), and less thoracohumeral elevation (p = 0.046). Similarly, like climbing primates, experienced climbers generally activated the shoulder musculature at a lower percentage of maximum, particularly during the exchange from support to swing and swing to support phase. However, high muscle activity was recorded in all muscles in both participant groups. Climbing experience coincided with a positive training effect, but not enough to overcome the high muscular workload of bimanual climbing. Owing to the evolved primary usage of the upper extremity for low-force, below shoulder-height tasks, bimanual climbing may induce high risk of fatigue-related musculoskeletal disorders. Knee ligaments guide and restrain joint motion, and their properties influence joint mechanics. Inverse modeling schemes have been used to estimate specimen-specific ligament properties, where external joint forces are assumed to balance with internal ligament and contact forces. This study simplifies this assumption by adjusting experimental loads to remove internal contact forces. The purpose of this study was to use novel experimental loading in an inverse modeling scheme to estimate ligament slack lengths, perform validation using additional loading scenarios, and evaluate sensitivity to the applied loading. Joint kinematics and kinetics were experimentally measured for a set of load cases. An optimization scheme used a specimen-specific forward kinematics model to estimate ligament slack lengths by minimizing the residual between model and experimentally measured kinetics. The calibrated model was used for a form of validation by evaluating non-optimized load cases. Additionally, uncertainty analysis related kinetic errors to previously reported kinematic errors. The six DOF tibial reactions realized RMS errors less than 23 N and 0.75 Nm for optimized load cases, and 33 N and 2.25 Nm for the non-optimized load cases. The uncertainty analysis, which was performed using the optimized load cases, showed average kinetic RMS errors less than 26 N and 0.45 Nm. The model's recruitment patterns were similar to those found in clinical and cadaveric studies. This study demonstrated that experimental distraction loading can be used in an inverse modeling scheme to estimate ligament slack lengths with a forward kinematics model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed to clarify whether swimming performance is affected by reflective markers being attached to the swimmer's body, as is required for a kinematic analysis of swimming. Fourteen well-trained male swimmers (21.1 ± 1.7 yrs) performed maximal 50 m front crawl swimming with (W) and without (WO) 25 reflective markers attached to their skin and swimwear. This number represents the minimum required to estimate the body's center of mass. Fifty meter swimming time, mid-pool swimming velocity, stroke rate, and stroke length were determined using video analysis. We found swimming time to be 3.9 ± 1.6% longer for W condition. Swimming velocity (3.3 ± 1.8%), stroke rate (1.2 ± 2.0%), and stroke length (2.1 ± 2.7%) were also significantly lower for W condition. To elucidate whether the observed reduction in performance was potentially owing to an additional drag force induced by the reflective markers, measured swimming velocity under W condition was compared to a predicted velocity that was calculated based on swimming velocity obtained under WO condition and an estimate of the additional drag force induced by the reflective markers. The mean prediction error and ICC (2,1) for this analysis of measured and predicted velocities was 0.014 m s−1 and 0.894, respectively. Reducing the drag force term led to a decrease in the degree of agreement between the velocities. Together, these results suggest that the reduction in swimming performance resulted, at least in part, from an additional drag force produced by the reflective markers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With mechanical loading as the main risk factor for LBP, exoskeletons (EXO) are designed to reduce the load on the back by taking over part of the moment normally generated by back muscles. The present study investigated the effect of an active exoskeleton, controlled using three different control modes (INCLINATION, EMG & HYBRID), on spinal compression forces during lifting with various techniques. Ten healthy male subjects lifted a 15 kg box, with three lifting techniques (free, squat & stoop), each of which was performed four times, once without EXO and once each with the three different control modes. Using inverse dynamics, we calculated L5/S1 joint moments. Subsequently, we estimated spine forces using an EMG-assisted trunk model. Peak compression forces substantially decreased by 17.8% when wearing the EXO compared to NO EXO. However, this reduction was partly, by about one third, attributable to a reduction of 25% in peak lifting speed when wearing the EXO. While subtle differences in back load patterns were seen between the three control modes, no differences in peak compression forces were found. In part, this may be related to limitations in the torque generating capacity of the EXO. Therefore, with the current limitations of the motors it was impossible to determine which of the control modes was best.
