Developments in the Malaysian language situation, accepting Malay, English and Mandarin Chinese as relevant language choices begins to resemble that of Singapore which is discussed in much detail in the next paper. A different form of multilingualism is present in Hong Kong, which after the introduction of the legally binding "One Country, Two Systems" policy was facing a balancing act between Cantonese, English and Mandarin Chinese. In China, the national language policy places Mandarin Chinese at the top of the various dialect chains in the country and through education admonishes the new generation to become bilingual and literate in the national language.
