• Some Fe-oxide grains crystallized from silicate melt were incorporated into downward percolated sulfide liquid. • Fe-oxide in massive ores crystallized from the sulfide liquid pool mingled with the downward percolated sulfide liquid. • Downward percolation of sulfide liquid is crucial in the formation of the net-textured and massive ores. The mineralogy and chemical composition of magnetite and chromite series (simplified as magnetite) can provide valuable insights into the formation processes of magmatic Ni-Cu-(PGE) sulfide deposits. Previous studies mainly focus on magnetite in disseminated ores and massive ores, but very little is known about the magnetite in net-textured ores. In this study, magnetite in net-textured ores (type 1 magnetite) and massive ores (type 2 magnetite) from the Zhdanov Ni-Cu-(PGE) deposit in the Pechenga ore field, were recognized and analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Both the type 1 and type 2 magnetite grains show zoned textures with Cr concentration decreasing from the core to the rim. Type 1 magnetite has higher Al and Mg concentrations than type 2 magnetite. These observations indicate that type 1 and type 2 magnetite crystallized from and record the solidification process of silicate melt and sulfide liquid, respectively. Type 1 magnetite within sulfides of net-textured ores has identical chemical composition to that within silicates, which suggests that the chemical composition of magnetite is not significantly affected by sub-solidus re-equilibrium with sulfide minerals. It also suggests that the type 1 magnetite within sulfides was incorporated into sulfide liquid later during the downward percolation of sulfide liquid through the magnetite-bearing olivine crystal mush. On the other hand, type 2 magnetite has comparable concentrations of W, Sc, Ga, Cr, Mo, and Mn to the type 1 magnetite. Such compositional similarity can be explained by the crystallization of type 2 magnetite from the sulfide liquid pool that have been mingled with the downward percolated sulfide liquid. This paper presents new geochemical, U–Pb geochronological, and Sm–Nd isotopic data for early Paleozoic granitoids and acidic volcanic rocks within the Mamyn Terrane that constrain the early Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the eastern central Asian orogenic belt (CAOB). The Mamyn Terrane is usually considered part of the Argun Massif, although our new geochronological data indicate the presence of two magmatic events within the terrane that occurred at the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary (∼541 Ma) and the late Cambrian–Early Ordovician boundary (507–488 Ma). Field observations indicate that all of the late Ediacaran–Early Cambrian (∼541 Ma) volcanic rocks are deformed whereas the Late Cambrian–Early Ordovician (507–488 Ma) intrusive and volcanic rocks are either deformed or undeformed. The ∼541 Ma magmatic event in the study area produced rhyodacite, trachyrhyodacite, and trachyrhyolite units that are either high-K calc-alkaline or shoshonitic. These units have ε Nd(t) values from −7.4 to −8.7, t Nd(DM) ages of 1.9–1.8 Ga, and formed from primary magmas generated by the partial melting of Mesoproterozoic continental crustal material in a suprasubduction zone setting. The Late Cambrian–Early Ordovician (507–488 Ma) magmatic event in this area formed gabbrodiorite, diorite, granodiorite, granite, trachyrhyodacite, and rhyodacite units that are medium-K and calc-alkaline, and have arc-like trace element compositions that are enriched in the large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and depleted in the high field strength elements (HFSEs). These units have initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (i) ratios and ε Nd(t) values that range from 0.7048 to 0.7067 and from −3.3 to −0.2, respectively, yielding t Nd(DM) ages of 1.6–1.1 Ga. These features indicate that the magmas that formed these units were generated in a subduction zone setting, most likely by the partial melting of Mesoproterozoic crustal material with the addition of some younger juvenile material. In addition, the Late Cambrian–Early Ordovician trachyrhyodacite and rhyodacite units in this area are high-K and calc-alkaline or are shoshonitic and are enriched in K, Rb, the rare earth elements (REE), Y, Nb, Ta, and Zr, and are depleted in Sr and have A-type granite affinities. However, these units do not contain alkali amphibole or pyroxene and have high FeO tot /MgO ratios (6.7–12.7) that indicate they formed from highly fractionated magmas. Therefore, these volcanic rocks represent extreme melt differentiates that also formed the coeval granites. The early Paleozoic magmatic events within the Mamyn Terrane have also been identified in the Argun, Bureya, and Jiamusi areas of the eastern CAOB, suggesting that all of these areas have a common geodynamic history. Abstract: The Saramta peridotite massif is located within the Sharyzhalgai complex, SW margin of the Siberian craton. The Saramta massif was formed in the Archean and then juxtaposed with granulites of crystalline basement of the Siberian craton. The Saramta harzburgites are highly refractory in terms of lack of residual clinopyroxene, olivine Mg-number (up to 0.937), and spinel Cr-number (∼0.5), suggesting high degree of partial melting. Detailed study of their microstructures shows that they have extensively reacted with a SiO2-rich melt, leading to the crystallization of orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, amphibole and spinel at the expense of olivine. The major element compositions of the least reacted harzburgites are similar to the residues of refractory peridotites produced by the fractional melting (initial melting pressures >3GPa and melt fractions ∼40%). Moreover, non-residual clinopyroxenes are highly depleted in Yb, Zr and Ti, but highly enriched in LREE. A two-stage history is proposed for the Saramta peridotite: (1) primitive mantle underwent depletion in the garnet stability field followed by melting in the spinel stability field; (2) refractory harzburgites underwent refertilization by SiO2-rich melt in supra-subduction zone. Rare Saramta lherzolites probably formed from more refractory harzburgites as a result of such a melt–rock reaction. The Saramta peridotites are similar to low-T coarse-grained peridotites of subcratonic mantle. Processes of their formation, as reflected by textures and composition of minerals of the Saramta peridotites, are characteristic of the early stages of subcratonic mantle formation. Abstract: Major-element and trace-element compositions, as well as Nd isotope ratios and protolith model ages of Early to Middle Paleozoic granitoids from the Russian Gorny Altai are summarized and discussed in terms of the compositions and tectonic settings. The observed geographic variations of compositions in the granitoid assemblages correlate with three groups of late Neoproterozoic to Middle Paleozoic terranes corresponding to oceanic, island arc, and turbidite basin settings. Plutonic rocks in the oceanic and island arc terranes are commonly low-alkali metaluminous tonalite and trondhjemite that formed by melting of oceanic crust. The island arc terranes also contain tonalite–trondjemite–granodioritic and tonalite–granodiorite–granitic rocks, with higher alkali and potassium contents, which result from anatectic melting of volcanics and sediments. Granitoids in the turbidite basins are potassic peraluminous monzogranite produced by anatectic melting of upper crustal turbidites, as well as subalkaline tonalite, granodiorite, and granite derived from upper crustal metasediments and metamorphosed mafic oceanic crust underlying the turbidite basins. Alkaline granitoids emplaced during two major tectonomogamatic events (Early and Late Devonian) and are present in terranes of all three settings. Their source is of crustal origin, like in other groups of granitoids, but it was a mixture of crustal and mantle material. Abstract: Diverse types of Late Cambrian–Early Ordovician basalts are present as tectonic sheets and fragments in the Early–Middle Paleozoic Charysh-Terekta suture-shear zone of NE Russian Altai. La and Nb depleted, transitional and enriched basalts coexist within this geological structure. Mg# varies from 56 to 20 over a relatively narrow range of SiO2 (46–52wt.%). Iron, Zr, Nb, Y, LREE Ti, Cr, Ni and Th variably decrease with Mg#. Depleted tholeiitic basalts have weakly to undepleted LREE (La/Sm n =0.6–1.0), weakly fractionated HREE patterns (Gd/Yb n =1.1–1.3), relatively high εN d (7.7–10.3) and negative Nb and Th anomalies relative to La (Nb/Lapm =0.37–0.8, Th/Lapm =0.4–0.85). Transitional basalts have moderately fractionated REE (La/Sm n =1.6–2.0, Gd/Yb n =1.3–2.4), medium εN d (5.6–5.7) and positive Nb and negative Th anomalies relative to La (Nb/Lapm =1.2–1.6, Th/Lapm =0.7–0.9). Enriched basalts are the prevalent volcanic rock type characterized by LREE-enriched patterns with fractionated HREE (La/Sm n =1.9–4.7, Gd/Yb n =1.5–2.5), low εN d (2.6–3.3), positive Nb and zero to positive Th anomalies (Nb/Lapm =1.0–1.8, Th/Lapm =0.6–1.15). Mantle melting processes, crustal contamination, or fractional crystallization can be ruled out as the main cause of the anomalies except for the moderate effect of alteration and metamorphism on the major-element composition of basalts. The enriched basalts show stronger REE fractionation (La/Yb n =6–9), higher positive Nb anomalies, like Phanerozoic HIMU ocean island basalts, than the transitional counterparts (La/Yb n =3–4), and also higher Al2O3 contents with convex-up trace-element patterns through Th–Nb–La. Both varieties have higher Zr/Hf ratios than depleted basalts and εN d values close to those in HIMU. The LREE-depleted basalts are interpreted to have been a mid-oceanic ridge, whereas the transitional and LREE-enriched basalts – a chain of oceanic islands derived from a heterogeneous multi-component plume tapping the moving oceanic lithosphere. The oceanic islands were fragmented in the accretionary complex and tectonically mixed with underlying MOR tholeiites. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
