Abstract

•The natural ultramarine blue pigment has been used in the mural paintings of Ali Qapu Palace.•Huntite has been used as a filler in both the priming and paint layers.•There is evidence of the use of the Tempra technique in the mural paintings of the Ali Qapu Palace.•The use of an organic layer under the priming layer is reported for the first time in Iranian mural paintings.
