Abstract

Understanding the sorption equilibrium of penetrants into a polymer is key to mastering the kinetics and properties of the final product. These systems are non‐ideal meaning the presence of multiple components in the continuous phase changes the solubility of individual species with respect to pure component solubilities. For this reason, measurements of the individual and total solubilities of multiple penetrants in isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and random copolymers (RCP) were performed using a pressure decay method at temperatures of 75–85°C, and total pressures of up to 29 barG. The results showed that the pure component solubilities of propylene and propane in amorphous iPP were similar, but 4 to 5 times higher than that of ethylene in the same polymer. However, in the ternary system of propylene/propane/iPP, it is seen that propylene acts as an anti‐solvent to propane, and that propane acts as an anti‐solvent to propylene, resulting in lower solubility of both penetrants than in the respective binary cases. The co‐solubility effect of propylene on ethylene and the anti‐solvent effect of ethylene on propylene were observed for the system of propylene/ethylene/RCP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Polyimide (PI) films containing dispersed ZnO nanoparticles were prepared from both zinc nitrate hexahydrate (designated as Zn(NO3)2/PI) and ZnO nanopar- ticles, 2-nm average primary size (ZnO/PI). This work shows how the origin of ZnO affects both the photolumines- cence and thermal decomposition of the film. The presence of ZnO derived from Zn(NO3)2� 6H2 Ow as conf irmed by X- ray diffraction technique. The fluorescent intensities from Zn(NO3)2/PI and ZnO/PI were much higher than that from pure PI films. When the ZnO concentration exceeded a cer- tain saturation level, the emission intensity decreased due to the undesirable aggregation of ZnO. At the same concentra- tion, ZnO/PI exhibited higher emission intensity than Zn(NO3)2/PI. All samples prepared under nitrogen emitted higher intensity than their counterparts prepared under ar- gon. The ZnO/PI film was thermally more stable than the Zn(NO3)2/PI one. From TEM images of 117.6 mol% ZnO/PI films, the ZnO aggregates, whose average size was 17- 90 nm, were well distributed throughout the film but poorly dispersed in nanometer range. 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 7. High performance wood composites from highly filled polybenzoxazine

Abstract

Highly filled systems prepared by compression molding of Hevea brasiliensis woodflour filled polybenzoxazine composites with high mechanical properties and reduced water uptake has been developed. The effects of percent filler content and particle size of woodflour on the obtained composite's properties were examined. The low melt viscosity of BA‐a type polybenzoxazine allows substantial amount of woodflour to be easily incorporated into the composites. The results showed that mechanical properties from dynamic mechanical analysis and flexural test at filler content below the optimum filler packing show approximately linear relationship with filler loading. The outstanding compatibility between the woodflour and the polybenzoxazine matrix is evidently seen from the large improvement in the composite's Tg and char yield. Scanning electron micrographs of the composite also reveals substantially strong interface between the woodflour filler and the polybenzoxazine matrix. Water absorption of the composites is greatly reduced with increasing the amount of polybenzoxazine due to the inherent low water absorption of the matrix. The polybenzoxazine is; therefore, a highly attractive candidate as high performance lignocellulosic binder or adhesive and other related applications. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
