The giant magnetoelectric effect of laminated composites of rare-earth-iron alloys (Terfenol-D) and lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) is calculated by using the finite element method. The simulations show that the magnetoelectric response of the laminated Terfenol-D/PZT composites is strongly dependent on interfacial bonding between Terfenol-D and PZT layers.

The properties of 10 nm thick [Co.sub.50][Fe.sub.50] interdigited electrodes deposited on lead zirconate titanate (PZT) substrates are described in order to achieve low power dynamic tuning of magnetic properties. The reversible electric field induced changes in the coercive field of more than 10% and a 0.08% change in the resistance are obtained for an applied electrical field of 5kV/cm.

The all-electrical indentation shear modulus and elastic modulus measurement technique are investigated by using piezoelectric cantilever sensors with a tip for potential in vivo applications. A model tissue consisting of modeling clay embedded on gelatin has shown that the indentation compression and indentation shear tests have provided two-dimensional elastic and shear moduli maps or images.

Pseudodielectric functions in the visible-deep ultraviolet spectral range of Pb(Zr(sub x)Ti(sub 1-x))O3 (PZT), Pb0.98Nb0.04(Zr0.2Ti0.8)0.96O3, Pb0.91La0.09(Zr0.65Ti0.35)0.98O3 and Pb0.85La0.15Ti0.96O3 films grown on platinized silicon substrates using a sol-gel method and on (0001) sapphire using a radio-frequency sputtering method is measured. The near constancy of the lowest bind-gap energy independent of Zr composition is consistent with the band-structure calculations.

A general model of the irradiated material undergoing percolation-type transition from crystalline to amorphous state is presented and effects of percolation on the bulk properties is also examined. The model gives good reproduction of scattering profiles observed experimentally in zircon, including the asymmetry of diffuse scattering and effects of swelling and shearing.
