Abstract

Uniaxial stress-strain measurements were performed on polycrystalline Tb(sub 6)Dy(sub 24) alloys, which exhibit 'giant magnetostriction' at cryogenic temperatures. The anisotropy was correlated to bulk magnetostriction and to mechanical hysteresis.

Abstract

A study was conducted to analyze the magnetostriction of single crystal and polycrystal Tb(sub 0.60)Dy(sub 0.40) at cryogenic temperatures. The alloy was arc melted and dropped into a chilled copper mold in preparation of the polycrystalline samples. Experimental results indicated that the thermal expansion measurements promote a measure of crystallographic texture for comparison with the magnetostriction.

Abstract

The vibration damping in polycrystalline TbDy alloys is studied at cryogenic temperatures. Mechanical hysteretic losses is measured at various strains, frequencies, and loading configurations at 77 K.
