We present computational results on electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of CoVMnSb, a quaternary Heusler alloy. Our calculations indicate that this material may crystallize in two energetically close structural phases: inverted and regular cubic. The inverted cubic phase is the ground state, with ferrimagnetic alignment, and around 80% spin polarization. Despite having a relatively large bandgap in the minority-spin channel close to the Fermi level, this phase does not undergo a half-metallic transition under pressure. This is explained by the "pinning" of the Fermi level at the minority-spin states at the Γ point. At the same time, the regular cubic phase is half-metallic and retains its perfect spin polarization under a wide range of mechanical strain. Transition to a regular cubic phase may be attained by applying uniform pressure (but not biaxial strain). In practice, this pressure may be realized by an atomic substitution of non-magnetic atoms (Sb) with another non-magnetic atom (Si) of a smaller radius. Our calculations indicate that 25% substitution of Sb with Si results in a half-metallic regular cubic phase being the ground state. In addition, CoVMnSb0.5Si0.5 retains its half-metallic properties under a considerable range of mechanical pressure, as well as exhibits thermodynamic stability, thus making this alloy attractive for potential spintronic applications. In this work, we shed light on the mechanism behind the complexity of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) compound. To achieve a comprehensive picture, we first theoretically investigate the pure elemental metals and observe that the AHE of RE Gd is negative while that of TM Co is positive. We then investigate magnetic properties and AHE behavior for two typical cases of TM-rich and RE-rich compositions that correspond to GdCo5 and GdCo3 alloys, respectively. The observation that net magnetization is not a decisive factor in assessing the AHE value is consistent with recent claims. Besides, our investigations reveal a significant role of the Gd sublattice to the AHE. The reduction AHE signal under a high-applied field is attributed to the counteraction between the positive and negative AHC contributions when the TM and RE sub-moments are aligned parallel. On a bright note, our new findings can be successfully employed to unravel two types of aberrant humps of AHE signals near compensation temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is established that 2D magnetic materials are the ideal platform for building up modern-day electronic and spintronic devices. The popular ways to achieve 2D magnetic materials are mechanical exfoliation and chemical vapor deposition. However, the direct chemical synthesis route of such magnetic 2D materials on a large scale is relatively unexplored. This article reports an easy and cost-effective facile chemical synthesis with a proper capping agent and magnetic study of free-standing 2D Cr2S3 nanosheets and Cr2S3 nanoparticles within the temperature range of 2–300 K under the magnetic field of up to 5 T. Although few magnetic results on 2D Cr2S3 are available in the literature, there is enough scope to work for an in-depth understanding of the magnetic aspects of this 2D material. Here, ferrimagnetic ordering with a sufficiently high coercivity of up to 0.139 T at 2 K along with a tendency to the saturation in magnetization down to a certain temperature limit is observed. Contrary to the strong antiferromagnetic coupling with a Néel temperature, as observed by previous researchers, is also observed for this chemically synthesized 2D Cr2S3 nanosheets. A transition temperature of 117 K is observed for the Cr2S3 nanosheets, whereas for Cr2S3 nanoparticles, a transition temperature of 101.7 K is observed with negligible coercivity. This facile synthesis technique may be applied to achieve other non-van der Waals type 2D magnetic materials. Fully compensated ferrimagnetic half metals have attracted great attention in spintronics. Unlike many previous calculations based on hypothetical ordered alloys, here we look for existing solid solution series taking as an example Co1−xCrxS2. Calculations find that a low-spin state for Cr that matches early experiments and a fully compensated ferrimagnetic half metal with Curie temperature above room temperature is found at x ≈ 0.33. Our study demonstrates the method of combining two half metals with light and heavy 3d metals in a solid solution to achieve compensation, where atomic disorder does not destroy the desired properties. There is a growing interest in BiFeO3-based alloys because of the possibility it offers for developing high-temperature high-performance piezoelectric materials and for their interesting multiferroic properties. Often such ceramics are synthesized with additives either to reduce/suppress leakage current that the system inherits from the parent compound BiFeO3 or to promote sintering via formation of the liquid phase. We demonstrate here the propensity for stabilizing ferromagnetism in the ferroelectric solid solution BiFeO3–PbTiO3 (BF–PT) when synthesized with additive MnO2. Detailed investigation revealed that the ferromagnetic property of the ceramic is extrinsic and caused by the additive enabled precipitation of trace amount of the ferrimagnetic Pb-hexaferrite phase, not easily detected in conventional x-ray diffraction measurements. We also show that the ferromagnetic property is induced in Co-modified BF–PT. However, in this case, the additive stabilizes the CoFe2O4 spinel ferrite phase. While our findings offer a strategy to develop particulate magnetoelectric multiferroic composites using additive assisted precipitation of the ferrimagnetic phase(s) in BiFeO3-based ferroelectric alloys, it also helps in better understanding of the electromechanical response in BFO-based alloys. We report different growth modes and corresponding magnetic properties of thin EuSe films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on BaF2, Pb1−xEuxSe, GaAs, and Bi2Se3 substrates. We show that EuSe grows predominantly in the (001) orientation on GaAs(111) and Bi2Se3, but along the (111) crystallographic direction on BaF2 (111) and Pb1−xEuxSe (111). High resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements reveal a sharp and highly crystalline interface for both (001) and (111) EuSe films. In agreement with previous studies, ordered magnetic phases include antiferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and ferromagnetic phases. In contrast to previous studies, we found a strong hysteresis of the antiferromagnetic–ferrimagnetic transition. The ability to grow epitaxial films of EuSe on Bi2Se3 and of Bi2Se3 on EuSe enables further investigation of interfacial exchange interactions between various phases of an insulating metamagnetic material and a topological insulator. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental analysis of nonlinear magnetic transmission lines and demonstrates the phenomenon and capability of a simultaneous rise and fall time compression. A theoretical approach is formulated in which a new version of the modified Korteweg–de Vries equation is developed utilizing the Gardner–Morikawa transformation, continuum limit approximation, Toda-lattice approximation, and Mei theory of Maxwellian circuits. The proposed theoretical foundation work is validated through experimental demonstration. The pulse generation in a nonlinear magnetic transmission line is then studied in detail, and the output pulse characteristics are explored under different magnetic field strengths and arbitrary magnetization directions. In particular, output waveforms are analyzed in terms of pulse amplitude, full width half maximum, detailed ringing level, and figure of merit. Magnetic losses that arise in the ferrite material are modeled. It is shown that these losses are responsible for originating dissipative effects, which in turn deteriorate pulse shaping and increase ringing level. The localized disturbance within ferrimagnetic materials is also studied, and its impact on the output waveforms is also discussed. This study can potentially open up a new and fruitful entry to explore magnetic materials and their impacts in the field of ultrafast electronics in parallel with nonlinear electrical transmission lines. Spin-crossover (SC) compounds are fascinating materials that exhibit colorful phase transitions induced by temperature, pressure, photoirradiation, etc. From the microscopic point of view, the electronic (spin) state of a molecule changes between the low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states by such stimuli, and a variation of the molecular size follows through the vibronic coupling between the electronic state and structure in the molecule. This causes an elastic distortion and then an elastic interaction. The elastic interaction is essential in cooperative properties of SC phenomena. In this paper, we present a tutorial study on elastic interaction models for SC phenomena, which are the recent trend of modeling of SC compounds. We focus on multistep transitions, which are a topic of SC phenomena. We analyze the phase diagrams including the metastable phases for several SC systems, in which antiferromagnetic-like and ferrimagnetic-like phases are associated in addition to the LS and HS phases. Making use of the phase diagrams, we show various patterns of thermally induced SC transition with steps. We also investigate SC transitions with steps in a core-shell SC nanocomposite composed of two different SC compounds. We focus on two cases: the core has a lower transition temperature than the shell, and the core has a higher transition temperature. We show characteristic features of difference in the two systems. This work discusses the design and testing of a new computational spintronics research software. Boris is a comprehensive multi-physics open-source software, combining micromagnetics modeling capabilities with drift-diffusion spin transport modeling and a heat flow solver in multi-material structures. A multi-mesh paradigm is employed, allowing modeling of complex multi-layered structures with independent discretization and arbitrary relative positioning between different computational meshes. Implemented micromagnetics models include not only ferromagnetic materials modeling, but also two-sublattice models, allowing simulations of antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic materials, fully integrated into the multi-mesh and multi-material design approach. High computational performance is an important design consideration in Boris, and all computational routines can be executed on graphical processing units (GPUs), in addition to central processing units. In particular, a modified 3D convolution algorithm is used to compute the demagnetizing field on the GPU, termed pipelined convolution, and benchmark comparisons with existing GPU-accelerated software Mumax3 have shown performance improvements up to twice faster. Using density functional theory, a detailed computational study is performed to explore the structural and electronic properties of a black phosphorene monolayer, bilayer, and trilayer under a uniaxial strain along the armchair (b axis) and zigzag (a axis) directions. In the case of a monolayer black phosphorene, it is found that strain along the armchair direction slightly affects the a lattice parameter and the puckering height (Δ). Along the zigzag direction, however, variation of the a lattice parameter is compensated by both the a and b lattice variations while the parameter Δ remains unaffected. In the case of bilayer and trilayer black phosphorene, a similar behavior is observed where the layer-spacing "d" acts as an additional degree of liberty for strain compensation. In terms of electronic properties, strain along the armchair and zigzag directions changes the nature of the Γ point in the bandgap from a direct to an indirect electronic transition as a function of the strain value. In the strain range from −14% to +6%, all black phosphorene structures behave similarly to classical semiconductors. However, the size and strain combined effect significantly affects the Fermi energy position. Around 0% strain, all black phosphorene structures are of p-type, while they switch to an n-type semiconductor in the range of strain values from +2% up to +14%. We investigated the influence of oxygen vacancies on the magnetic and transport properties of ferrimagnetic NiCo2O4 (NCO) epitaxial films. Oxygen vacancies were introduced by annealing under reducing atmospheres NCO films whose cation composition was close to the stoichiometric one. We find that annealing NCO films under the vacuum reduces their magnetizations and increases their electrical resistivities. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, on the other hand, is almost unaffected by annealing treatments. X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that oxygen vacancies introduced in NCO films preferentially lower the Ni valence state while leaving the Co valence state unchanged. The lowering in the Ni valence state explains the reduced magnetizations and the increased resistivities for the films annealed under the vacuum. On the other hand, the Co valence state, which dominantly determines the orbital magnetic moments responsible for magnetic anisotropy, is insensitive to oxygen vacancies. Spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) provides a unique opportunity for the signal readout of magnetic ordering, especially for magnetic insulators. However, the magnitude of SMR signals is quite small, generally lower than one in a thousand, which is a persistent challenge in the field of spintronics. Here, we investigate SMR at room temperature in α-Fe2O3/Pt and γ-Fe2O3/Pt bilayers as well as the α-Fe2O3/Pt/γ-Fe2O3 trilayer, where α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3 are antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic materials, respectively. In contrast to the positive SMR in the γ-Fe2O3/Pt bilayer, an unprecedentedly large negative SMR with the magnitude of ∼0.35% is observed in the α-Fe2O3/Pt bilayer due to the spin-flop. The α-Fe2O3/Pt/γ-Fe2O3 trilayer shows features of a combination of positive and negative SMR. A comparative study of SMR in the Fe2O3 family not only enriches spin physics, but also makes Fe2O3 a versatile candidate in spintronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ferrimagnetic insulators with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are of particular interest for spintronics due to their ability to mitigate current shunting in spin–orbit torque heterostructures and enable low switching energy, high-density storage magnetic devices. Rare earth iron garnet Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) is one such material where prior studies have shown that the negative magnetostriction coefficient and isotropic in-plane tensile strain enable the magnetoelastic anisotropy to overcome the demagnetization energy and stabilize perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. However, the investigation of the tunability of the magnetoelastic anisotropy between thin films that possess perpendicular magnetization and quantification of the magnetoelastic constants has not been reported. Here, we quantify the evolution of magnetic anisotropy in (111)-oriented, epitaxial, 17 nm thick thin films of TmIG using a systematic variation of in-plane epitaxial strain (ranging 0.49%–1.83%) imposed by a suite of commercially available garnet substrates. Within the confines of the imposed strain range and deposition condition, the distortion from cubic symmetry is found to be approximately linear within the in-plane strain. The magnetic anisotropy field can be tuned by a factor of 14 in this strain range. The magnetoelastic anisotropy constant, B2, is found to be approximately constant (∼2500 kJ m−3) and more than 2× larger than the reported bulk value (∼1200 kJ m−3) for a cubic distortion between 90.17° and 90.71°. B2 is found to decrease at cubic distortions of 90.74° and larger. Our results highlight strain engineering, and its limitations, for control of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Reduction in compensation in Si-doped Al-rich AlGaN is demonstrated via chemical potential control (CPC). The chemical potentials and the resulting formation energies of carbon on the nitrogen site (CN) and cation vacancy complex with Si (VIII + nSiIII) were related to growth variables through a thermodynamic supersaturation model, which quantitatively predicted the incorporation of CN and the generation of the VIII + nSiIII complex. The compensation "knee" behavior, i.e., decreasing conductivity with increasing Si incorporation beyond a certain concentration, was successfully controlled. The maximum free carrier concentration was improved by impeding the formation of VIII + nSiIII complexes under III-richer conditions, while the impurity compensation by CN was reduced by making the growth environment N-richer. The results of Hall effect measurement and photoluminescence agreed well with quantitative theoretical predictions of the CPC model. Based on the developed model, the highest conductivity of 160 Ω−1 cm−1 with free carrier concentration of 3 × 1019 cm−3 in Al0.7Ga0.3N ever reported was achieved on single crystal AlN substrates. The demonstrated predictive power of the CPC model should greatly reduce the empirical analysis or iterative experimentation that would otherwise be necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of CuO and MnO 2 as sintering additives on the structural, ferroelectric, and magnetic properties of 0.7 BiFeO 3 − 0.3 (Ba 0.85 Ca 0.15) TiO 3 was investigated. The addition of CuO can inhibit grain growth, and the sample possesses the maximum remanent magnetization. However, the addition of MnO 2 can promote grain growth, and the sample exhibits the maximum remanent polarization of 34 μ C / cm 2. Nevertheless, the addition of both CuO and MnO 2 can markedly enhance the magnetic properties. The magnetization measurements manifest that all the samples undergo a paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition arising from the existence of a net moment due to the antiferrimagnetic interactions between Fe 2 + and Fe 3 + sublattices. The enhanced magnetism of the samples with the addition of CuO and MnO 2 can be due to the enhanced superexchange interaction between Fe 2 + and Fe 3 + arising from the increased Fe–O–Fe bond angle. M4A2O9 transition metal oxides, with M a divalent cation and A Nb or Ta, that exhibit a structure derived from corundum constitute an interesting class of materials due to their possible magnetoelectric properties. The lack of a linear magnetoelectric effect in Ni4Nb2O9, unlike Mn4Nb2O9 or Co4Nb2O9, is explained by a comprehensive investigation, combining synchrotron x-ray and neutron diffraction with magnetization, dielectric, and polarization measurements. The m′m′m magnetic point group associated with the Pb′cn′ ferrimagnetic structure induced below 76 K by the orthorhombic Pbcn structure of Ni4Nb2O9 forbids indeed such an effect. The crystal structure and magnetic ground state of Ni4Nb2O9 are discussed and compared with those of magnetoelectric P 3 ¯ c 1 M 4 A 2 O 9 compounds whose structure derives from corundum. We improve thermal tolerance of a Co/Pt based synthetic ferrimagnetic (SyF) reference layer in a CoFeB/MgO-based perpendicular anisotropy magnetic tunnel junction by employing a surface modification treatment (SMT) using Ar plasma on a Pt buffer layer underneath the SyF layer. A higher perpendicular anisotropy and more robustness against annealing for the SyF reference layer is observed by the employment of SMT. From the cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscope of the magnetic tunnel junction and atomic force microscopy on the Pt buffer layer, SMT has no significant effect on the surface roughness of the Pt buffer layer. On the other hand, X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that SMT increases the lattice spacing of the Pt buffer layer and shrinks that of the Co/Pt multilayer, which are maintained after annealing at 400 °C. Those structural changes could lead to the improvement of perpendicular anisotropy and thermal tolerance against annealing. A high-resolution Rutherford backscattering analysis reveals that Ar ions used for SMT penetrate to the Pt buffer layer, resulting in variation of the lattice spacing for the Pt buffer layer and Co/Pt multilayer. In addition, suppression of Fe diffusion from the CoFeB reference layer to the bottom Co/Pt multilayer is observed by using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, which also contributes to the higher thermal tolerance against annealing. The present observation reveals that the employment of SMT enables one to obtain both high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and high robustness against annealing through crystallographic change of the Co/Pt multilayer and suppression of Fe diffusion from CoFeB layer into the Co/Pt multilayer. We present a simple semiclassical model to sustain that in europium chalcogenides (EuX), Faraday rotation (FR) in the transparency gap is proportional to the magnetization of the sample, irrespective of the material's magnetic phase, temperature, or applied magnetic field. The model is validated by FR and magnetization measurements in EuSe in the temperature interval 1.7–300 K, covering all EuSe magnetic phases (paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic type I or type II, ferrimagnetic, and ferromagnetic). Furthermore, by combining the semiclassical model with the explicit electronic energy structure of EuX, the proportionality coefficient between magnetization and FR is shown to be dependent only on the wavelength and the bandgap. Due to its simplicity, the model has didactic value; moreover, it provides a working tool for converting FR into magnetization in EuX. As an electrode material with reported ferrimagnetic properties, the NiCo2O4 film exhibits critical electrical transport properties under a magnetic field as well as a magnetic microstructure. In this study, epitaxial NiCo2O4 films were prepared on LaAlO3 (100) substrates, and the effects of growth temperature on the magnetic and electrical transport properties of the films were investigated. Negative magnetoresistance was observed in the films due to the local spin effect. The NiCo2O4 films demonstrated a topological Hall effect, which is closely related to short-range magnetic order and a noncoplanar magnetic structure in NiCo2O4 films. The results indicate that there are two types of spin frustration in the NiCo2O4 structure. One is a diamond lattice composed of tetrahedral site cations, while the other is a triangular lattice structure formed by the edge-shared octahedral cations. For the NiCo2O4 (100) films, the sign of the ordinary Hall coefficient reverses by decreasing the measurement temperature, indicating that the carrier type changes from p to n. A ferrimagnet (FiM) has small domains consisting of oppositely polarized and unequal magnetic moments. Oppositely polarized magnetic moments have strong exchange coupling between them resulting in robust torque in FiM called bulk torque. Due to the strong bulk torque, magnetic moments in FiM do not precess around the switching axis for a long time unlike ferromagnets (FMs) leading to faster switching speed compared to FM. In this paper, we propose and model the switching of FiM (CoTb) with spin current injection from heavy metal with strong spin Hall effect (SHE) such as Pt. We carry out ab initio calculation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at the FiM(CoTb)/heavy metal(Pt) interface using spin polarized relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green's function method. We compute the exchange coupling among the magnetic moments inside the CoTb layer and model how the spin-orbit torque (SOT) along with the bulk torque can efficiently switch the FiM. Then, we consider a ferrimagnet based magnetic tunnel junction (FMTJ) with SHE metal. We perform a comprehensive simulation and performance analysis of FiM(CoTb)/MgO/CoFeB and FiM(CoTb)/MgO/FiM(CoTb) FMTJs with Pt underlayer. Using non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism, we calculate the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of the proposed FMTJs at room temperature. Furthermore, the importance of thickness in CoTb magnetization dynamics is shown using our FiM magnetization simulation framework. We analyze and show that the CoTb based FMTJ has large switching energy barrier to ensure thermal stability. Finally, we show the performance comparison (TMR, write performance and power consumption) between our proposed FMTJs and FM based MTJ and our simulation exhibits that for picosecond range switching speed, FMTJ is ∼ 25 times more energy efficient than FM based MTJ. The effect of partial substitution of Ge for Sb on the first-order ferrimagnetic (FRI)–antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in Mn 2 Sb has been studied. It shows that the transition temperature (T t) can be tuned between 119 K and 271 K by substituting 2.5%–10% Ge at Sb sites in Mn 2 Sb. The variation of density of state at the Fermi level N(E f) with Ge substitution shows that dN(E)/dE is positive at E f in the AFM state. With the application of a magnetic field, T t shifts to low temperature, which results in a giant negative magnetoresistance (MR) reaching a value of 70% for 2.5% substitution. Our results show that FRI to AFM transformation during cooling stops around 35 K, even though it remains incomplete. This, along with the nonmonotonic variation of lower critical field, open loop in isothermal MR, and increasing difference in zero field cooled warming and field cooled warming resistivity with increasing magnetic field, shows that the FRI to AFM transition is kinetically arrested in the case of 2.5% Ge substitution. Antiferromagnetic magnetization dynamics is more effective than ferromagnetic magnetization; however, it is extremely complex. Rare earth (RE) ferrimagnets, on the other hand, have tunable magnetization with associated negative exchange interaction in sublattices. Here, we study different RE-Fe ferrimagnets while changing the RE-content. We obtain various magnetic properties like saturation magnetization MS, coercivity HC, magnetic anisotropy energy constant Ku, exchange coupling constant λ, and compensation temperature Tcomp for different RE compositions. We suggest that along with MS and HC, λ is another important parameter that is easy to measure and has information that is similar to that in the spin-orbit torque effective field and the canting angle. Structural and magnetic properties of the spinel compound, Li0.5FeCr1.5O4, have been investigated using dc magnetization, neutron depolarization, and neutron diffraction techniques. DC magnetization measurement at 200 Oe has revealed a ferrimagnetic ordering at 417 K and a negative magnetization state between the two compensation temperatures (TComp) of 244 and 256 K. TComp varies with an applied magnetic field and two TComp merge at 256 K for magnetic fields ≥ 500 Oe. The existence of zero domain magnetization around TComp is evident from full recovery of the transmitted neutron beam polarization in a neutron depolarization study. The Rietveld refinement of the neutron diffraction pattern at 430 K reveals that the compound possesses a face centred cubic structure with Fe0.81Li0.19 and Cr1.5Li0.31Fe0.19 as cation distributions at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites, respectively. A temperature dependent neutron diffraction study reveals that the net magnetic moment changes sign near 265 K, across the spin compensation temperature. Both neutron diffraction and mean field calculation show that an asymmetric variation of the sublattice moments as a function of temperature yields a dominance of the ordered tetrahedral site moment over the octahedral site moment below TComp, and vice versa above TComp, and gives a microscopic understanding of the observed magnetization reversal phenomenon. The achieved understanding of magnetization compensation and the high coercivity near TComp have implications for possible use of such ferrimagnetic materials with finite spin polarization as effective spin polarizers/analyzers in spintronic devices. A theoretical model based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation is developed to study the effect of damping-like spin-orbit torque in ferrimagnets, which can capture many experimental findings. For example, the sample changes from Gd to FeCo dominate by increasing temperature, the damping-like spin-orbit torque has a peak at the magnetization compensation temperature, and angular-momentum compensation temperature increases as a function of Gd concentration. In contrast to the ferromagnet system, the switching trajectory in ferrimagnets is found to be precession free. The two sublattices are not always collinear, which produce a large exchange field affecting the magnetization dynamics. The study of material composition shows the existence of an oscillation region at intermediate current density, induced by the nondeterministic switching. Compared to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert model, our developed model based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation enables the systematic study of the spin-torque effect and the evaluation of ferrimagnet-based devices. High-frequency coaxial waveguide measurements are used to evaluate composition- and frequency-dependent complex permittivities and permeabilities of polycrystalline ferroelectric and ferrimagnetic ceramics. Material dielectric and magnetic property measurements were performed on ferroelectric barium titanate (BaTiO3) and ferrimagnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG), with the upper measurement frequency bound below gyromagnetic resonance of YIG. These polycrystalline materials were chosen because of their widespread use in voltage- and magnetic field-tunable devices. Wideband frequency material measurements were used to predict dielectric and magnetic properties of various two-phase composite media incorporating BaTiO3 and YIG. Two effective medium theories were used: an asymmetric, modified Maxwell-Garnett type and a symmetric Bruggeman model. The Bruggeman effective medium model is extended to include three-phases. The three-phase Bruggeman predictive model is employed when controlled porosity is introduced into the composite and when two component phases are combined with polytetrafluoroethylene. CaCu3Fe4O12 exhibits a temperature-induced transition from a ferrimagnetic-insulating phase, in which Fe appears charge disproportionated, as Fe 3 + and Fe 5 + , to a paramagnetic-metallic phase at temperatures above 210 K, with Fe 4 + present. To describe it, we propose a microscopic effective model with two interpenetrating sublattices of Fe ( 4 − δ ) + + and Fe ( 4 + δ ) + + , respectively, δ being a measure of the Fe-charge disproportionation. We include all 3d-Fe orbitals: t 2 g localized orbitals, with spin 3/2 and magnetically coupled, plus two degenerate itinerant eg orbitals with local and nearest-neighbor (NN) electron correlations, and hopping between NN eg orbitals of the same symmetry. Allub and Alascio [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 24(49), 495601 (2012)] previously proposed a model to describe the phase transition in LaCu3Fe4O12 from a paramagnetic-metal to an antiferromagnetic-insulator, induced by temperature or pressure, involving charge transfer between Fe and Cu ions, in contrast to Fe-charge disproportionation. With the model proposed for CaCu3Fe4O12, modified to account for this difference between the two compounds, the density of states of the itinerant Fe orbitals was obtained, using Green's function methods. The phase diagram of CaCu3Fe4O12 was calculated, including phases exhibiting Fe-charge disproportionation, where the two eg orbitals in each site are symmetrically occupied, as well as novel phases exhibiting local orbital selectivity/asymmetric occupation of eg orbitals. Both kinds of phases may exhibit paramagnetism and ferromagnetism. We determined the model parameters which best describe the phase transition observed in CaCu3Fe4O12 and found other phases in different parameter ranges, which might be relevant for other compounds of the ACu3Fe4O12 family, presenting Fe-charge disproportionation and intersite charge transfer Fe-Cu. We have demonstrated a ferrimagnetic-type anti-parallel remanent state of rhomboid shaped nanomagnets of two different widths alternated in a dipolar coupled nanomagnetic array. The anti-parallel state is reconfigured to a parallel remanent state by using a simple field initialization process. Magnetic states were directly visualized using the magnetic force microscopy technique. Due to a variation of the stray field distributions for the two different remanent states, distinct dynamic responses are found using the broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy technique without applying any external bias magnetic field. Experimental observations were supported by the micromagnetic simulations. Non-stoichiometric monoclinic 4C pyrrhotite (Fe7S8), a ferrimagnetic monosulfide that has been intensively used as a remanence carrier to infer the magnetization of the Earth’s crust and extraterrestrial materials, exhibits a characteristic low-temperature transition accompanied by complex modifications in anisotropy and magnetization. We demonstrate that the magnetic rotational symmetry of the 4C pyrrhotite is critically affected by the order of the defective Fe-sites, and this in turn is a key to decipher the physics behind the low-temperature transition. Our torque experiments and numerical simulations show an emergent four-fold rotational symmetry in the c-plane of the 4C pyrrhotite at T<30 K. This symmetry breaking associated with the transition is caused by the competitive interaction of two inherently hexagonal systems generated by two groups of Fesites with different local anisotropy fields that stem from the vacancy arrangement in the 4C stacking sequence, and it is triggered by changes in the spin orbit coupling due to the overlap of Fe-Fe electron orbitals at low-temperature. This mechanism provides a new explanation for the magnetic transition in 4C pyrrhotite at low temperature and could also cast light on non-trivial magnetic phenomena in defective systems. Peculiarities of low-temperature behavior of the magnetic properties of disordered spinel ferrites, prepared by means of dilution with the P2O5 amorphizing agent and by rapid quenching, were investigated. A sharp increase in the saturation magnetization σS, of ferrite compositions (1-x)MeFe2O4·xP2O5 (where Me is Ni, Fe, Mn, etc.), was observed at temperatures T < 80 K. It was established that the temperature dependences of σS and χ-1 (where v is the magnetic susceptibility) of the nickel ferrite composition (x = 0.6) have an extremum at T = 11 K. In this case, the effect of "memory" is observed for σS(T), which represents the dependence of σS (T = 4.2 K) on the magnitude of the magnetic field in which cooling was carried out. The asymptotic Curie temperature was determined by extrapolation of the linear part of the χ-1(T) dependence and found to be equal to -150 K. We present an analysis of the observed dependences from the viewpoint of a complex magnetic state, combining the features of the near antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic boundary-surface spin ordering. A comprehensive study on growth of ferrimagnetic manganese zinc ferrite (Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4) films on single crystalline strontium titanate(001) (SrTiO3) substrates was carried out. Under the optimized conditions, a thin film with a layer thickness of 200 nm was deposited, and the structural properties were investigated. Contrary to data published in literature, no buffer layer was necessary to achieve epitaxial growth of a poorly lattice-matched layer. This was confirmed for Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4(001) on SrTiO3(001) by x-ray diffraction and the adjoined phi scans, which also revealed a lattice compression of 1.2% of the manganese zinc ferrite film in the out-of-plane direction. Using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the near surface stoichiometry of the film could be shown to agree with the intended one within the uncertainty of the method. X-ray absorption spectroscopy showed an electronic structure close to that published for bulk samples. Additional x-ray magnetic circular dichroism investigations were performed to answer detailed structural questions by a comparison of experimental data with the calculated ones. The calculations took into account ion sites (tetrahedral vs. octahedral coordination) as well as the charge of Fe ions (Fe2+ vs. Fe3+). Contrary to the expectation for a perfect normal spinel that only Fe3+ ions are present in octahedral sites, hints regarding the presence of additional Fe2+ in octahedral sites as well as Fe3+ ions in tetrahedral sites have been obtained. A comprehensive numerical study of the spin toque driven dynamic states is presented for a synthetic ferrimagnet. For this, the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation has been solved simultaneously for the two coupled layers of the synthetic ferrimagnet in a macrospin approach including the spin transfer torque term from an external polarizer for one of them. It is shown that a large variety of dynamic modes (in-plane precession (IPP) and out-of-plane precession) can be established, upon varying the strength of the exchange bias field that pins one of the layers of the SyF as well as the Ruderman- Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interlayer coupling strength. The current--field state diagrams are presented as well as the frequency current dependencies of the most important mode which is the IPP mode. A characteristic feature of the IPP mode for the coupled system (as compared to single layer excitations) is the change, increase or decrease of the frequency, with current upon increasing field. We report the low-temperature anomalous magnetic behavior of ferrimagnetic spinels cobalt orthotitanate (Co2TiO4), which exhibits magnetic compensation behavior across 31.74 K, and cobalt orthostannate (Co2SnO4) exhibiting two sequential magnetic transitions, namely (i) ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic transition with Néel temperature TN∼41K and reentrant spin-glass behavior with glass transition temperature TSG∼39 K. The Arrott plot (H/M versus M²) criterion has been used to extricate the order of sequential magnetic transitions occurring below TN. Negative slopes of the Arrott plots below 32 K, metamagnetic-like character of the M-H isotherms, anomalies in the specific-heat (CP T-1 versus T) below 15 K, and a zero-crossover of isothermal magnetic-entropychange (ΔS) signify the presence of pseudo first-order discontinuous magnetic phase transition in the low-temperature regime 5K≤T≤32 K. The dc- and ac-susceptibilities of both Co2TiO4 and Co2SnO4 are interpreted in terms of frozen-spin-clusters, which are responsible for very large magnitudes of the coercivity HC∼20 kOe and bipolar-exchange bias HEB∼=-20 kOe observed below 10 K. We investigate the switching field distribution and the resulting bit error rate of exchange coupled ferri-/ferromagnetic bilayer island arrays by micromagnetic simulations. Using islands with varying microstructure and anisotropic properties, the intrinsic switching field distribution is computed. The dipolar contribution to the switching field distribution is obtained separately by using a model of a triangular patterned island array resembling 1:4Tb=in² bit patterned media. Both contributions are computed for different thicknesses of the soft exchange coupled ferrimagnet and also for ferromagnetic single phase FePt islands. Nanocomposites (NCs) comprising (1-x) BiFeO3 (BFO) and x SrFe12O19 (SRF) (x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) have been prepared by a sol-gel route. Presence of pure phases of both BiFeO3 (BFO) and SrFe12O19 (SRF) in the NCs for x=0.3 and 0.4 has been confirmed by Rietveld analysis of XRD data though a minor impurity phase is observed in the case of x=0.1 and 0.2 NCs. Transmission electron micrographs of the NCs show that particles are mostly spherical with average size of 30 nm. M-H measurements at 300 and 10K indicate predominantly ferrimagnetic behavior of all the NCs with an increasing trend of saturation magnetization values with increasing content of SRF. Dielectric constant (εr) of the NCs at room temperature shows a dispersive behavior with frequency and attains a constant value at higher frequency. εr - T measurements reveal an increasing trend of dielectric constant of the NCs with increasing temperature and show an anomaly around the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of BFO, which indicates magnetoelectric coupling in the NCs. The variation of capacitance in the presence of magnetic field confirms the enhancement of magnetoelectric effect in the NCs. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy results indicate the presence of only Fe3+ ions in usual crystallographic sites of BFO and SRF. For T > TN, the dc-magnetic susceptibility (χdc = M/Hdc) fits well with the Néel's expression for the two-sublattice model with anti-ferromagnetic molecular field constants NBB~15.44, NAB~32.01, and NAA~20.88. We have evaluated the spin-wave stiffness parameter in nanoparticulate powders of Mg1-xZnxFe2O4 ( 0.0≤x≤0.6 ) mixed ferrites from magnetization data obtained at two different ranges of temperature: 5-300?K and 300-750?K . At the lower temperature range the T-dependence of the saturation magnetization, Ms, data could be fitted to the Bloch's law with T3/2. The spin-wave stiffness parameters D were determined from the coefficient of T3/2; being ~132 and ~86?meVÅ for x?=?0.0 and 0.6, respectively, with the corresponding exchange constant JAB of ~1.10 and ~0.72?meV , respectively. The values of D determined from the experimental Curie temperature Tc were ~212 and ~163?meVÅ2 for x?=?0.0 and 0.6, respectively, with the corresponding exchange constant JAB of ~1.77 and ~1.30?meV . The difference in both JAB and D values obtained from the coefficient of T3/2 and from Tc may be attributed to the fact that the magnetic measurements were performed at a different range of temperatures. Dielectric measurements of core-shell BaTiO3-Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 ferroelectric-ferrimagnetic composites, sintered at two temperatures (1050 °C and 1150 °C), were performed in a broadband frequency range of 10Hz-1 THz at various temperatures of 100-500 K. The comparison of temperature dependences reveals a drastic change of permittivity as a function of sintering temperature, as a result of modifications induced on the microstructural parameters as grain size and density. Effective medium approach was used in order to better describe processes associated with the constituent composite phases. Complex specific resistivity coupled with Maxwell-Wagner-Hashin-Shtrikman model allowed to associate lower frequency processes with grain boundary effects. We concluded that the main factor influencing the electrical properties of core-shell composites is the structure and interfaces, instead of the constituent materials themselves. The magnetization-induced second-harmonic generation (MSHG) effect was applied to study changes of magnetization distribution caused by H+2 ions implantation in magnetic garnet film of (111) symmetry. The evolution of the magnetization vector m in perpendicular magnetic field H was studied as a function of coherently rotated polarizers by an angle φ. The I2ω(H, φ) intensities exhibit completely different character as compared to the unimplanted film. The experimental results were explained in the frame of a phenomenological model of the MSHG effect, developed for the structure of 3m symmetry, composed of implanted and unimplanted sublayers. The theoretical approach allowed to determine the amplitudes and phases of nonlinear optical susceptibility tensor elements χ[2] as well as the m(H) vector components. In contrast to the linear magneto-optical Faraday effect, application of nonlinear MSHG method allows for simultaneous determination of all components of the magnetization vector in single experiment. It was found that contributions from the sublayers associated with mz components enter to the MSHG effect with opposite signs due to difference in phases of χ[2]. It is shown that m vector in the implanted sublayer undergoes spatial evolution vs H during the magnetization process, with a complex trajectory corresponding to the reorientation of the m(H) from sample plane to the normal direction. By using first-principles calculations, we investigated how to achieve a strong ferromagnetism in Cr-doped Si by controlling the atomic structure and Cr concentration as well as carrier densities. We found that the configuration in which the Cr atom occupies the tetrahedral interstitial site can exist stably and the Cr atom has a large magnetic moment. Using this doping configuration, room-temperature ferromagnetism can be achieved in both n-type and p-type Si by tuning Cr concentration and carrier densities. The results indicate that the carrier density plays a crucial role in realizing strong ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) has been studied for ferrimagnetic antiperovskite Mn4-xDyxN films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. The introduction of Dy changes the AHE dramatically, even changes its sign, while the variations in magnetization are negligible. Two sign reversals of the AHE (negative-positive-negative) are ascribed to the variation of charge carriers as a result of Fermi surface reconstruction. We further demonstrate that the AHE current JAH is dissipationless (independent of the scattering rate), by confirming that anomalous Hall conductivity, σAH, is proportional to the carrier density n at 5K. The spin-phonon coupling in magnetic materials is due to the modulation of the exchange integral by lattice vibrations. BaFe12O19 M-type hexaferrite, which is the most used magnetic material as permanent magnet, transforms into ferrimagnet at high temperatures, but no spin-phonon coupling was previously observed at this transition. In this letter, we investigated the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of polycrystalline BaFe12O19 M-type hexaferrite from room temperature up to 780K to probe spin-phonon coupling at the ferrimagnetic transition. An anomaly was observed in the position of the phonon attributed to the Fe(4)O6, Fe(5)O6, and Fe(1)O6 octahedra, evidencing the presence of a spin-phonon coupling in BaM in the ferrimagnetic transition at 720 K. In ferromagnetic/superconducting (FM/SC) planar hybrids, a reentrance of the upper-critical field line Hc2(T) is observed close to Tc. The effect is generally ascribed to the so-called domain-wall superconductivity and has been theoretically explored in great detail. Experimental investigations are limited mostly to FM/SC bilayers in which the FM layers host out-of-plane magnetic domains of strong anisotropy and large width (>300 nm), the SC layer is quite thick (>30 nm), and the external magnetic field was applied normal. To expand our knowledge to until now unexplored conditions, we study a series of Co(dco)/Nb(dNb)/Co(dco) trilayers under a parallel magnetic field; Co outer layers exhibit out-of-plane magnetic domains of weak anisotropy and small width (<150 nm) and the Nb interlayer is very thin (<20 nm). We demonstrate a strong reentrance of Hc2(T) that can be tuned through the irreversible magnetization processes of the FM outer layers, the two-dimensional character of the SC interlayer, and the matching between the interfering SC and FM length scales. These results refine the nature of the reentrance of Hc2(T) in FM/SC hybrids and can motivate new theoretical and experimental investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Critical analysis on the magnetic properties of synthetic ferrimagnet (SyF), Ta/MgO/CoFeB/Ru/ CoFeB/MgO/Ta, is demonstrated via both static and dynamic techniques. With the Ru thickness being 2.3 nm, the coupling between two CoFeB layers becomes orthogonal, which can be used for spin-transfer-torque nano-oscillator (STNO). The fitting of angular dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) allows the precise determination of magnetic anisotropy of each CoFeB layer, the relative magnetizations and the exchange field near the frequency of STNO applications. In addition, the mechanism of resonance broadening at out-of-plane direction is identified to be magnetic inhomogeneity by fitting the angular dependent linewidth of FMR spectra, which provides indispensable information for the future design of STNO devices. This contribution focuses on the use of modified Rayleigh law as a technique for determining the intrinsic and extrinsic (reversible/irreversible) contributions to the piezoelectric effect up to 150 °C across a broad compositional space, augmenting previous understanding of the BiFeO3-(K0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-PbTiO3 system. At room temperature, a mechanistic explanation of the correlation between crystal symmetry, i.e., tetragonal spontaneous strain, xs, and the Rayleigh relations using Landau theory is provided. The intrinsic response was found to be heavily dependent upon the tetragonal xs, whereby an optimisation between polarization and permittivity was elucidated, leading to enhanced piezoelectric charge coefficients. A c/a ratio of ~1.041 was identified at which the room temperature intrinsic and extrinsic effects were at a maximum; a dinit of 183 x 10-12 m/V and Rayleigh coefficient of 59 x 10-18 m²/V² were measured, resulting in the largest piezoelectric charge coefficients. The piezoelectric charge coefficient d33, intrinsic and extrinsic contributions of these materials were all found to increase up to 150 °C while adhering to the Rayleigh model. The reversible extrinsic component of the total reversible response, dinit, was calculated to be relatively minor, 4.9% at room temperature, increasing to 12.1% at 150 °C, signifying its increasing influence to the piezoelectric effect, as domain wall motion is thermally activated. Hence, the phenomenological interpretation provided here may be used as a roadmap to elucidate the origins of the temperature dependence of the piezoelectric effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flexile single layer electromagnetic wave absorbers were designed by incorporating appropriate amounts of carbon black in a nitrile butadiene rubber matrix along with an optimized amount of magnetic counterpart, namely, barium hexaferrite for applications in S, C, and X-bands. Effective dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability were measured using cavity perturbation method in the frequency range of 2-12 GHz. The microwave absorbing characteristics of the composites were studied in the S, C, and X-bands employing a model in which an electromagnetic wave is incident normally on a metal terminated single layer. Reflection loss exceeding -20 dB is obtained for all the samples in a wide frequency range of 2-12 GHz when an appropriate absorber thickness between 5 and 9mm is chosen. The impact of carbon black is clearly observed in the optimized composites on the mechanical strength, thickness, band width of absorption, dielectric properties, and absorptivity. Substitution of Sb with Sn was achieved in ferrimagnetic antiperovskite Mn3SbN. The experimental results indicate that with an increase in Sn concentration, the magnetization continuously decreases and the crystal structure of Mn3Sb1-xSnxN changes from tetragonal to cubic phase at around x of 0.8. In the doping series, step-like anomaly in the isothermal magnetization was found and this behavior was highlighted at x = 0.4. The anomaly could be attributed to the magnetic frustration, resulting from competition between the multiple spin configurations in the antiperovskite lattice. Meantime, Hc of 18 kOe was observed at x=03, which is probably the highest among those of manganese antiperovskite materials reported so far. With increasing Sn content, the abrupt change of resistivity and the sharp peak of heat capacity in Mn3SbN were gradually weakened. The crystal structure refinements indicate the weakened change at the magnetic transition is close related to the change of c/a ratio variation from tetragonal to cubic with Sn content. The results derived from this study indicate that the behavior of Mn3Sb1-xSnxN could potentially enhance its scientific and technical applications, such as spin torque transfer and hard magnets. We present the structural and magnetic properties of Mn1-xFexV2O4 (x = 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3), and investigate the magnetocaloric effect in those compounds. The ferrimagnetic spin ordering is enhanced with the Fe doping at Mn site of MnV2O4, while the orbital ordering is suppressed. Large magnetic entropy changes up to 3.8 J/kg K as well as the relative cooling power up to 110 J/kg at the field change of 0-2 T for Mn1-xFexV2O4 are calculated from the isothermal magnetization measurements. The large orbital entropy change of MnV2O4 is suppressed by the Fe doping, while the spin entropy contribution arising from the strong spin-orbit coupling remains. Moreover, the doping of Fe broadens the temperature span of the large magnetic entropy change and increases the relative cooling power of MnV2O4 by 2.4 times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this report, we have investigated the effect of antisite ordering on the magnetic behavior of NixZn1-xFe2O4 nanoparticles for x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1. Observed magnetization versus temperature data show systematic gradual changes from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic phase with increasing amount of Ni concentration. Saturation magnetization of the parent Zn ferrite increases when substituted by Ni and then decreases for concentration greater than x = 0.5. Coercivity also shows a concentration dependence. Saturation magnetization has no dependence on cooling field at all concentrations. For x = 0.5 the system act as an extremely soft magnetic material with highest saturation magnetization and lowest coercivity. Site occupancy by cations plays an important role for local moment imbalance between different antiferromagnetic sublattices giving rise to ferrimagnetic interaction upon Ni substituted in Zn ferrite. High field magnetization measurements up to 60 T on free powder samples from GdCo12-xFexB6 (x = 0-3) compounds are reported. The data were used to evaluate the microscopic exchange interaction integral, JGd-3d, between Gd and 3d (Co,Fe) spins. The systems are ferrimagnets; they order magnetically between TC = 95 K for x = 3 and TC = 165 K for x = 0. The low temperature magnetization curves as well as the temperature dependence of intrinsic magnetic parameters are determined by magnetic measurements in pulsed magnetic field. The average magnetic moment <μCo+Fe> per mean transition metal atom (Co + Fe) is small and increases with increasing Fe concentration from 0.44 μΒ for x = 0 to 0.51 μΒ for x = 3 at T = 4 K. From high field magnetization curves, a value of JGd-3d/kB = -4.65 K is derived for x = 0, whereas mean field approximation yields a much larger 3d-3d exchange integral of JCo-Co/kB = 105 K. The obtained results reveal an increase of -JGd-3d/kB with Fe concentration. For x = 0.5, the intersublattice coefficient nGd-3d is found to keep an almost constant value of 5.87 ± 0.13 T*f.u.*μB-1 whatever the temperature in the 2 to 60 K range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
