A study was conducted to analyze the spontaneous emission factor beta for superluminescent diodes and a novel way of computing the average value of beta. The output light versus to the spectral width above the lasing threshold in a luminescent diode was determined using a relation indicating that a higher output power leads to a larger homogeneous spontaneous emission linewidth. Results indicated that the spontaneous emission factor beta of such diodes support different physical meaning from that of semiconductor lasers.
