Multibody distributed dynamic systems are seen in many engineering applications. Developed in this investigation is a new analytical method for a class of branched multibody distributed systems, which is called the augmented distributed transfer function (DTFM). This method adopts an augmented state formulation to describe the interactions among multiple distributed and lumped bodies, which resolves the problems with conventional transfer function methods in modeling and analysis of multibody distributed systems. As can be seen, the augmented DTFM, without the need for orthogonal system eigenfunctions, produces exact and closed-form solutions of various dynamic problems, in both frequency and time domains.

Although quaternions are singularity-free in modeling and analysis of rigid bodies in three-dimensional motion, description of torques may lead to unbounded response of a quaternion-based model. This paper gives theorems on the conditions of torque-induced singularity in four coordinate systems: inertial frame, body frame, Euler basis, and dual Euler basis. According to the theorems, torques applied in an inertial frame or a body frame or a Euler basis will never cause unbounded motion; torques applied in a dual Euler basis, however, may lead to unbounded motion.

The transient response analysis presented in Part I is generalized for distributed damped systems which are viscoelastically constrained or combined with lumped parameter systems. An energy formulation is introduced to regain symmetry for the spatial differential operators, which is destroyed in the original equations of motion by the constraints, and the coupling of distributed and lumped elements. As a result, closed-form solution is systematically obtained in eigenfunction series.

An analytical method is developed for closed-form estimation of the transient response of complex distributed parameter systems that are nonproportionally damped, and subject to arbitrary external, initial, and boundary excitations. A new modal analysis leads to the Green’s function formula for the distributed system and an eigenfunction expansion of the system Green’s function. The legitimacy of the modal expansion is also shown.

A new analytical and numerical method is presented for modeling and analysis of cylindrical shells stiffened by circumferential rings. This method treats the shell and ring stiffeners as individual structural components, and considers the ring eccentricity with respect to the shell middle surface. Through use of the distributed transfer functions of the structural components, various static and dynamic problems of stiffened shells are systematically formulated. With this transfer function formulation, the static and dynamic response, natural frequencies and mode shapes, and buckling loads of general stiffened cylindrical shells under arbitrary external excitations and boundary conditions can be determined in exact and closed form. The proposed method is illustrated on a Donnell-Mushtari shell, and compared with finite element method and two other modeling techniques.

It is well known that use of quaternions in dynamic modeling of rigid bodies can avoid the singularity due to Euler rotations. This paper shows that the dynamic response of a rigid body modeled by quaternions may become unbounded when a torque is applied to the body. A theorem is derived, relating the singularity to the axes of the rotation and applied torque, and to the degrees of freedom of the body in rotation. To avoid such singularity, a method of equivalent couples is proposed.

Distributed parameter systems describe many important physical processes. The transfer function of a distributed parameter system contains all information required to predict the system spectrum, the system response under any initial and external disturbances, and the stability of the system response. This paper presents a new method for evaluating transfer functions for a class of one-dimensional distributed parameter systems. The system equations are cast into a matrix form in the Laplace transform domain. Through determination of a fundamental matrix, the system transfer function is precisely evaluated in closed form. The method proposed is valid for both self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint systems, and is extremely convenient in computer coding. The method is applied to a damped, axially moving beam with different boundary conditions.

A new method is presented for active vibration control of the axially moving string, one of the most common models of axially moving continua. The control is formulated in the Laplace transform domain. The transfer function of a closed-loop system, consisting of the plant, a feedback control law and the dynamics of the sensing and actuation devices, is derived. Analysis of the root loci of the closedloop system gives two stability criteria. Stabilizing controller design is carried out of both collocation and noncollocation of the sensor and actuator. It is found that all the modes of vibration can be stabilized and that in principle the spillover instability can be avoided. Also, the steady-state response of the stabilized string to periodic, external excitation is presented in closed form.
