The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of ultrasound measurements for predicting carcass traits in 124 Spanish pascual-type lambs (13 to 16 kg carcass weight). Ultrasound images were taken transversal and longitudinal to the vertebral column and at thoracic (TV; between 12th and 13th ribs) and lumbar (LV; between first and second lumbar vertebrae) locations. Skin thickness, subcutaneous backfat thickness (BFT), and depth (DLD), width (WLD), and area (ALD) of longissimus dorsi were obtained with ImageJ 1.42q software. After slaughter, BFT (TV, 2.30 ± 0.06 mm; LV, 2.46 ± 0.06 mm), DLD (TV, 2.47 ± 0.03 cm; LV, 2.48 ± 0.03 cm), WLD (TV, 4.50 ± 0.04 cm; LV, 4.60 ± 0.04 cm), and ALD (TV, 9.96 ± 0.12 cm(2); LV, 10.19 ± 0.13 cm(2)) were directly measured on the lamb carcass. Correlations between ultrasound and direct carcass measurements were greater than 0.61 for DLD, WLD, and ALD (P < 0.05) whereas they fluctuated between 0.32 and 0.60 for BFT (P < 0.05); moreover, correlations were significantly (P < 0.05) greater for transversal than for longitudinal views. In a similar way, linear regression analyses suggested a moderate underestimation for BFT and lumbar DLD when using real-time ultrasound technologies whereas WLD, ALD, and thoracic DLD suffered from under- and overestimation for small and large values of carcass traits, respectively. After decomposing the mean square prediction error (MSPE) for the different ultrasound measurements, we found that the error due to disturbance contributed most to the MSPE followed by the error of central tendency and the error due to regression. The SE of prediction (SEP) was also calculated as an additional precision indicator, obtaining estimates less than that in previous studies with larger lambs. In conclusion, transversal ultrasound measurements at the thoracic and lumbar levels could be a useful tool for predicting DLD, WLD, and ALD in light lambs, perhaps suffering from worse prediction properties when focusing on BFT. This information could be of special relevance for light lamb producers worldwide, with a special emphasis in the Mediterranean basin where this kind of production system accounts for a large percentage of the sheep industry.

The objective of this study was to re-evaluate our previously published technique of estimating total physically separable internal fat (IFAT) in beef cattle using real-time ultrasound (RTU) and carcass measurements from live animals by including more breed types and genders under different management scenarios. We expanded the original database and performed additional analyses. The database was gathered from 4 studies and contained 110 animals (16 bulls, 16 heifers, and 78 steers), being Angus (n = 56), Angus× 5/8 Angus × 3/8 Nellore (n = 18), and Angus crossbreds (n = 36). Ultrasound measurements were obtained 7 d before slaughter, including the 12th to 13th rib fat thickness (uBF) and ultrasound kidney fat depth (uKFd). The uKFd was measured in a cross-sectional image collected between the first lumbar and 13th rib as previously published. Carcass data were collected 48 h post-mortem and consisted of backfat thickness (cBF), kidney fat depth (cKFd) and KPH weight, live BW, and HCW. Whole gastrointestinal tracts were removed and dissected to obtain IFAT weights. Weight of IFAT was highly correlated with KPH weight (0.88) and cKFd (0.81) and moderately correlated with uKFd (0.71). Prediction equations were developed for estimating IFAT, KPH weight, and cKFd with the PROC REG of SAS using the stepwise statement. The best predictors of IFAT were KPH weight or cKFd and cBF (r(2) = 0.84 and 0.83 and root mean square errors (RMSE) of 4.23 and 4.33 kg, respectively). Ultrasound measurements of uKFd and uBF had an r(2) of 0.65 and RMSE of 6.07 kg when both were used to predict IFAT. The results of cross-validation analyses indicated that equations developed either with KPH weight or cKFd weight and cBF had greater precision than the equation developed with uKFd and uBF. Most of the errors associated with the mean square error of prediction were due to random, uncontrolled variation. These results were consistent with previously published evaluation of this technique. These findings confirm that this RTU technique allows the measurement of IFAT in a non-invasive way that may improve our ability to estimate IFAT in beef cattle, be used to more accurately formulate rations, and be applied in sorting cattle at feedyard.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the genetic correlations among real-time ul- trasound carcass, BW, and scrotal circumference (SC) traits in Nelore cattle. Carcass traits, measured by real- time ultrasound of the live animal, were recorded from 2002 to 2004 on 10 farms across 6 Brazilian states on 2,590 males and females ranging in age from 450 to 599 d. Ultrasound records of LM area (LMA) and backfat thickness (BF) were obtained from cross-sectional im- ages between the 12th and 13th ribs, and rump fat thickness (RF) was measured between the hook and pin bones over the junction between gluteus medius and bi- ceps femoris muscles. Also, BW (n = 22,778) and SC (n = 5,695) were recorded on animals born between 1998 and 2003. The BW traits were 120, 210, 365, 450, and 550-d standardized BW (W120, W210, W365, W450, and W550), plus BW (WS) and hip height (HH) on the ultrasound scanning date. The SC traits were 365-, 450-, and 550-d standardized SC (SC365, SC450, and SC550). For the BW and SC traits, the database used was from the Nelore Breeding Program—Nelore Bra- zil. The genetic parameters were estimated with mul- tivariate animal models and REML. Estimated genetic correlations between LMA and other traits were 0.06 (BF), −0.04 (RF), 0.05 (HH), 0.58 (WS), 0.53 (W120), 0.62 (W210), 0.67 (W365), 0.64 (W450 and W550), 0.28 (SC365), 0.24 (SC450), and 0.00 (SC550). Esti- mated genetic correlations between BF and with other traits were 0.74 (RF), −0.32 (HH), 0.19 (WS), −0.03 (W120), −0.10 (W210), 0.04 (W365), 0.01 (W450), 0.06 (W550), 0.17 (SC365 and SC450), and −0.19 (SC550). Estimated genetic correlations between RF and other traits were −0.41 (HH), −0.09 (WS), −0.13 (W120), −0.09 (W210), −0.01 (W365), 0.02 (W450), 0.03 (W550), 0.05 (SC365), 0.11 (SC450), and −0.18 (SC550). These estimates indicate that selection for carcass traits measured by real-time ultrasound should not cause antagonism in the genetic improvement of SC and BW traits. Also, selection to increase HH might de- crease subcutaneous fat as correlated response. There- fore, to obtain animals suited to specific tropical pro- duction systems, carcass, BW, and SC traits should be considered in selection programs.

Accuracy of live ultrasound measurements to evaluate the total tissue depth (GR), as well as fat and LM depths at different scanning sites, was studied in 96 purebred Suffolk and Dorset lambs of both sexes slaughtered between 36 and 54 kg of BW. Before slaughter, 7 real-time ultrasound measurements were taken on lambs: fat and LM depths between the 12th and 13th ribs (transverse) and between the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae (transverse and longitudinal), and GR. After slaughter, the measurements equivalent to ultrasound measurements were taken on digitized images of the cuts on the left half carcass of each lamb. Ultrasound GR and fat depth measurements were closely correlated with the corresponding carcass measurements (0.76 < or = r < or = 0.81). Ultrasound GR measurement exhibited a large error of central tendency, but the level of error due to the disturbance (ED) was comparable with fat depth measurements (ED = 8.5%; residual SD = 2.24 mm; CV of residuals = 9.5%). Ultrasound fat depth measurements were more accurate between the 12th and 13th ribs (error due to regression = 1.20; ED = 0.82) than between the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae (error due to regression = 5.58 and 5.4; ED = 1.10 and 0.93, transverse and longitudinal, respectively), mainly due to image interpretation errors in the lumbar region. Measurements of LM depth demonstrated low variability in the population under study (SD = 2.6 mm), and these ultrasound measurements showed low correlation with the corresponding carcass measurements (0.34 < or = r < or = 0.43). The results of this study demonstrated that ultrasound measurements were more accurate for evaluating fat depth and the GR measurements than for estimating LM depths. Ultrasound GR measurement is a promising measurement, especially where carcass grading systems are based on this carcass measurement.

Accuracy and repeatability of live-animal ultrasound measures, and the relationships of these measures with subprimal yields and carcass value, were investigated using data from 172 wethers. Wethers were F 1 progeny from the mating of 4 terminal sire breeds to Rambouillet ewes and were finished in a feedlot to a mean BW of 62.9 kg (SD = 9.5 kg). Before transport to slaughter, LM area, LM depth, and backfat thickness were measured from transverse ultrasound images taken between the 12th and 13th ribs. After slaughter, these measures were taken on each carcass. Carcasses were fabricated into subprimal cuts, and weights were recorded. Ultrasound accuracy and repeatability were assessed using bias, SE of prediction, SE of repeatability, and simple correlations. Relationships among ultrasound and carcass measures, and between these measures and carcass yield and value, were evaluated using residual correlations and linear prediction models. Ultrasound bias approached 0 for LM area, and backfat thickness was overestimated by only 0.69 mm. The SE of prediction and r were 1.55 cm 2 and 0.75 for LM area, and 1.4 mm and 0.81 for backfat thickness, respectively. The SE of repeatability was 1.31 cm 2 and 0.75 mm for LM area and backfat thickness, respectively. At a standardized BW and backfat thickness, wethers with larger LM area and LM depth yielded larger and more valuable carcasses, and these relationships were detectable with ultrasound. For each SD increase in carcass LM area, dressing percentage increased 1.57 percentage points, gross carcass value increased US$5.12, and boxed carcass value increased US$6.84 (P < 0.001). For each SD increase in ultrasound LM area, dressing percentage increased 0.95 percentage points, gross carcass value increased US$3.15, and boxed carcass value increased US$3.86 (P < 0.001). When LM area effects were adjusted for carcass weight, the response in boxed carcass value attributed to disproportionate increases in high-value subprimal cut weights was small. Associations of dressing percentage and carcass value with ultrasound and carcass LM depth were significant (P < 0.01) but smaller than corresponding associations with LM area. These data indicate biological and economical incentives for increasing LM area in wethers, and live-animal ultrasound can provide reliable estimates of carcass measures. These results are applicable to terminal sire breeders and producers who market sheep using carcass-merit pricing systems.

Ultrasonic measurements were taken on 46 sheep using a real-time ultrasound machine equipped with 2 probes (5 and 7.5 MHz). Measurements of subcutaneous fat thickness (SC) and muscle LM depth (MD) and area (MA) were taken at 2 locations: over the 13th thoracic vertebra (SC13, MD13, and MA13, respectively) and at the interval between the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae (SC34, MD34, and MA34, respectively). Fat thickness was also measured over the third sternebra of the sternum. The relation- ship between carcass and in vivo ultrasound measure- ments was high for all the measurements (r 2 between 0.54 and 0.96, P < 0.01). Concerning MD and SC, the 7.5 MHz probe estimates were consistently more pre- cise than the 5-MHz estimates (r 2 increased between 0.09 and 0.13), but the reverse occurred with the MA estimates, although to a lesser extent. Estimates of carcass composition for muscle, subcutaneous fat, inter- muscular fat, internal fat, and total fat based on BW explained a large amount of variation in muscle (87%), subcutaneous fat (85%), intermuscular fat (79%), inter- nal fat (74%), and total fat (87%). The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography to measure subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and LM traits (area, depth, and width) in live Awassi lambs of different sexes, predict actual SFT and LM traits without damage to the carcass, and improve carcass classification. Data were obtained from ultrasound scans of 20 female and 10 male lambs. Female lambs were randomly divided into light (FL; n = 10) and heavy (FH; n = 10) finishing groups. Slaughter weights of lambs in FL were 30 kg and for FH and male groups were 40 kg. Subcutaneous fat thickness and LM traits, cross-sectional area between the 12th and 13th rib were measured using real-time ultrasound in vivo and on the carcass after slaughter. All ultrasound and carcass measurements were different (P > 0.05) except carcass yield and carcass LM width in female lambs (FL and FH). Between different sex groups, all ultrasound and carcass measurements were the same except ultrasound SFT (USFT; P = 0.04) and carcass SFT (CSFT; P = 0.03). Significant correlation coefficients were between USFT and CSFT (0.93, P < 0.01; 0.76, P = 0.02), ultrasound LM depth (ULMD) and carcass LM depth (CLMD; 0.64, P = 0.05; 0.77, P < 0.01), and ultrasound LM area (ULMA) and carcass LM area (CLMA; 0.88, 0.84; P < 0.01) for female lambs in FL and FH groups. Also, similar correlations were determined significantly between USFT and CSFT (0.84, P < 0.01; 0.76, P = 0.02), ULMD and CLMD (0.69, P = 0.03; 0.77, P < 0.01), and ULMA and CLMA (0.88, 0.84; P < 0.01) for male lambs in male and FH groups. The introduction of USFT and ULMA as independent variables in addition to BW in the multiple regression equations further improved the variations for CSFT (88, 75, and 81%) and CLMA (78, 90, and 80%) for lambs in FL, FH, and male groups, respectively, whereas no improvement was observed for cold carcass weight with the exception of the FH group and carcass yield. These results indicate that in vivo USFT and ULMA in association with BW could be used to estimate CSFT, CLMA, and cold carcass weight ultrasound findings about LM, and SFT can be included to the selection programs for different BW and sex of Awassi lambs.

Sixty Brangus bulls were evaluated live using two real-time ultrasound instruments and four technicians to estimate longissimus muscle area (LMA) and 12th rib fat thickness (FT) every 4 mo beginning at 4 and 12 mo of age, respectively, and continuing until 24 mo of age. Ten bulls were slaughtered every 4 mo to determine actual LMA and FT, 9-10-11th rib chemical composition, yield grade (YG) factors, and empty body weight (EBW). Live animal traits were used to predict 9-10-11th rib composition, YG, and EBW. Scanned mean FT was accurate (P less than .05) at 16 mo and was not different (P = .09) from the actual mean FT (95% of the time the error in estimation was less than or equal to .33 cm). Scanned mean LMA was accurate (P less than .05) at 12 mo (95% of the time the error in estimation was less than or equal to 20.0 cm2). Absolute differences between scanned and actual mean FT and LMA were different (P less than .05) from zero for the main effects of month, operator and(or) interpreter, and instrument. Increased level of operator skill did not improve the accuracy of FT or LMA measurements, whereas increased level of skill of the interpreter of scans did improve the accuracy of LMA estimations. There was no difference (P greater than .05) between ultrasound instruments in accuracy of estimating FT or LMA. The most accurate prediction of YG occurred at 12 mo and incorporated LW, hip height (HH), and ultrasound LMA (R2 = .95, SD = .14). The most accurate prediction of EBW occurred at 16 mo and incorporated LW, HH, and ultrasound FT (R2 = .99, SD = 6.65 kg), whereas the most accurate equation for combined slaughter periods incorporated LW, HH, and ultrasound LMA (R2 = .99, SD = 20.71 kg). We conclude that scanning of LMA at 12 mo and of FT at 12 or 16 mo were sufficiently accurate to characterize groups of bulls; however, some individual measurements were quite inaccurate. Measurements at other months should not be considered accurate for either individuals or groups of bulls. Yield grade and EBW can be accurately estimated from live animal and ultrasound measurements, which may be useful in identifying Brangus cattle with superior cutability and may eliminate the need for serial slaughter in research projects.

Knowledge of the genetic control of pork quality traits and relationships among pork quality, growth, and carcass characteristics is required for American swine populations. Data from a 2 x 2 diallel mating system involving Landrace and Duroc pigs were used to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations among growth (ADG), real-time ultrasonic (US) measures of backfat thickness (BF) and longissimus muscle area (LMA), carcass characteristics, and various pork quality traits. Data were collected from 5,649 pigs, 960 carcasses, and 792 loin chops representing 65, 49, and 49 sires, respectively. Genetic parameters were estimated by REML assuming animal models. Heritability estimates were moderate to high for ADG, USBF, USLMA, carcass BF, and LMA, percentage of LM lipid (IMF), pork tenderness, and overall acceptability. Estimates were low to moderate for percentage of cooking loss, pH, shear force, percentage of LM water, water-holding capacity (WHC), pork flavor, and juiciness. Genetic correlations between US and carcass measures of BF and LMA indicate that selection based on US data will result in effective improvement in carcass characteristics. Selection for increased LMA and(or) decreased BF using US is, however, expected to result in decreased IMF and WHC, increased percentage of LM water and shear value, and in decreased juiciness, tenderness, and pork flavor. Average daily gain was favorably correlated with IMF and unfavorably correlated with shear force. Selection for increased ADG is expected to improve WHC but to decrease the percentage of LM water, with an associated decrease in juiciness. The results of this study suggest the feasibility of including meat quality in selection objectives to improve product quality. Favorable genetic correlations between IMF and eating quality traits suggest the possible merit of including IMF in the selection objective to improve, or restrict change in, pork eating quality.

Real time ultrasound (RTU) measures of longissimus muscle area and fat depth were taken at 12 and 14 mo of age on composite bulls (n = 404) and heifers (n = 514). Carcass longissimus muscle area and fat depth, hot carcass weight, estimated percentage lean yield, marbling score, Warner-Bratzler shear force, and 7-rib dissectable seam fat and lean percentages were measured on steers (n = 235). Additive genetic variances for longissimus muscle area were 76 and 77% larger in bulls at 12 and 14 mo than the corresponding estimates for heifers. Heritability estimates for longissimus muscle area were 0.61 and 0.52 in bulls and 0.49 and 0.47 in heifers at 12 and 14 mo, respectively. The genetic correlations of longissimus muscle area of bulls vs heifers were 0.61 and 0.84 at 12 and 14 mo, respectively. Genetic correlations of longissimus muscle area measured in steer carcasses were 0.71 and 0.67 with the longissimus muscle areas in bulls and heifers at 12 mo and 0.73 and 0.79 at 14 mo. Heritability estimates for fat depth were 0.50 and 0.35 in bulls and 0.44 and 0.49 in heifers at 12 and 14 mo, respectively. The genetic correlation of fat depth in bulls vs heifers at 12 mo was 0.65 and was 0.49 at 14 mo. Genetic correlations of fat depth measured in bulls at 12 and 14 mo with fat depth measured in steers at slaughter were 0.23 and 0.21, and the corresponding correlations of between heifers and steers were 0.66 and 0.86, respectively. Live weights at 12 and 14 mo were genetically equivalent (r(g) = 0.98). Genetic correlations between live weights of bulls and heifers with hot carcass weight of the steers were also high (r(g) > 0.80). Longissimus muscle area measured using RTU was positively correlated with carcass measures of longissimus muscle area, estimated percentage lean yield, and percentage lean in a 7-rib section from steers. Measures of backfat obtained using RTU were positively correlated with fat depth and dissectable seam fat from the 7-rib section of steer carcasses. Genetic correlations between measures of backfat obtained using RTU and marbling were negative but low. These results indicate that longissimus muscle area and backfat may be under sufficiently different genetic control in bulls vs heifers to warrant being treated as separate traits in genetic evaluation models. Further, traits measured using RTU in potential replacement bulls and heifers at 12 and 14 mo of age may be considered different from the corresponding carcass traits of steers.

Live animal real-time ultrasound scans and carcass measures were taken on 80 pigs comprising two sexes (42 barrows; 38 gilts) and two halothane genotypes (40 carriers and 40 negatives) that were slaughtered between 108 and 148 kg live weight. Transverse scans (TRUS), at right angles to the midline, were taken on right (RS) and left (LS) sides at the last rib. Longitudinal scans (LON) were taken 6.5 cm off the midline immediately anterior (ANT) and posterior (PST) to the last rib on both the RS and LS. Longissimus muscle depth and area and backfat thickness over the longissimus muscle were measured on TRUS. Backfat thickness and longissimus muscle depth were measured at each end of the LON. Backfat thickness and longissimus muscle measurements were taken at the 10th and last rib on the RS of the carcass. Carcasses were fabricated using standard techniques to establish lean cut yields and carcass soft tissue was chemically analyzed to determine fat-free lean contents. Stepwise regression analysis was performed to develop equations to predict the weights and percentages of lean cuts and fat-free lean. Fat and muscle measures taken from ultrasound scans were generally less accurate than last rib carcass measures at predicting composition. There was little difference in R2 for equations based on either TRUS or ANT/LON; however, PST/LON, generally, were less accurate than ANT/LON. Combining measurements from more than one scan gave little improvement in R2 compared with the best single scan. Estimates of sex bias for carcass composition prediction were small. Halothane genotype and carcass lean content biases were detected; equations derived from the pooled data tended to overestimate the lean content of negative pigs and fatter carcasses and underestimate the lean content of carrier animals and leaner carcasses.

The carcass characteristics of 27 market barrows and 27 market gilts were evaluated at various times (n = 8) with real-time ultrasound (Aloka 210 DX) from approximately 20 kg until slaughter at three end points. The pigs were randomly assigned to slaughter weight groups of 91, 104.5, and 118 kg at weaning time. Correlations were determined over slaughter weight group and sex, and the accuracies of ultrasound measurements were also evaluated. The regressions of ultrasound 10th-rib fat and ultrasound longissimus muscle area on live weight were also developed. Correlations between actual and ultrasound-measured last-rib fat, 10th-rib fat, and longissimus muscle area were high (r = .91, .63, and .53, respectively; P less than .01). The accuracy of ultrasound longissimus muscle area prediction was lower for 118-kg pigs than for the two lighter groups, whereas the accuracy for prediction of last-rib fat was lower for 91-kg pigs than for the two heavier groups, as indicated by higher absolute differences (P less than .05). Last-rib fat and longissimus muscle area tended to be overestimated and 10th-rib fat tended to be underestimated by real-time ultrasound. Prediction of last-rib fat by ultrasound was more accurate for gilts than for barrows, as indicated by a lower absolute difference (P less than .05).

Thirty-nine mature cows were divided into three condition groups on the basis of their subcutaneous fat thickness as determined by real-time ultrasound. A representative animal from each group was measured and slaughtered. The remaining cows with each group were stratified evenly into two groups with one group fed to gain weight and the other to lose weight. Several ultrasound and other live measures were taken every 4 wk and two animals per subgroup were randomly slaughtered. Carcass data were collected and one side of each carcass was boned, ground, mixed, and subsampled for fat and protein determination. Four regression equations were generated to predict percentage of fat (FAT), percentage of protein (PROT), total fat (TOTFAT), total protein (TOTPROT), total calories (CAL), CAL per live weight (CAL/WT), yield grade (YG), and marbling (MARB). The first equation used all live measures (SUB), the second equation used only objective live measures (OBJ), the third equation incorporated traditional live measures (EAS), and the fourth equation used only carcass data (CAR). Adjusted R-squares of the most appropriate equation using the SUB, OBJ, EAS, and CAR measurements were .82, .73, .82, and .82 for FAT; .82, .57, .61, and .66 for PROT; .89, .87, .86, and .85 for TOTFAT; .95, .95, .93, and .74 for TOTPROT; .93, .92, .91, and .90 for CAL; .83, .78, .83, and .82 for CAL/WT; .86, .86, .78, and .93 for YG; and .75, .70, .74, and .74 for MARB, respectively. It seems that condition score or ultrasound with other objective live measures is as accurate in predicting cow composition as carcass measures.

Eighty-one crossbred steers were used to evaluate four commercially available ultrasound systems that predict intramuscular fat. The software systems represented included Animal Ultrasound Services, Inc., Ithaca, NY; CPEC, Oakley, KS; Critical Vision, Inc., Atlanta, GA (CVIS); and Classic Ultrasound Equipment, Tequesta, FL. Systems were evaluated using marbling scores and percentage ether extractable fat of the longissimus muscle. Before statistical analyses, system predictions were corrected for the respective system's average deviation between the prediction and carcass measurement. The absolute difference between system prediction and percentage ether extract (EEADIFF) or marbling score (MADIFF) converted to ether extract by regression was analyzed with a model accounting for effects of system, technician within system, animal, and animal x system. Steers with USDA marbling scores less than Small00 were assigned to a low marbling class, and all others were assigned to a second class. Data were then analyzed with a subsequent model including marbling class. For EEADIFF in the first model, system, animal, and system x animal were significant (P < .001). For MADIFF, technician within system (P < .05) and all other effects (P < .001) were significant. In the second model, system x marbling class was significant (P < .05) for EEADIFF and approached significance for MADIFF (P = .17). Least squares means for EEADIFF indicated that the systems were more precise measuring animals in the low marbling class. Finally, the CPEC and CVIS systems were the most precise for predicting intramuscular fat.

Young bulls were ultrasonically scanned to 1) study breed differences for 12th rib fat depth (USFAT) and longissimus muscle area (USREA), 2) evaluate the nature and predictability of USFAT and USREA development, and 3) determine the effect of age (YFAT and YREA, respectively) or weight (WREA) adjustments on USFAT and USREA. Angus (AA), Charolais (CH), Hereford (HH), Shorthorn (SS), and Simmental (SM) bulls (n = 886) were studied in 2 yr at two stations. Breed differences were observed for end of test USFAT (AA = SSHHCH = SM, P.05) and USREA (CH = SMSS = AAHH, P.05). Within-breed coefficients of variation were 29.8 to 48.4% for end of test USFAT and from 9.0 to 10.8% for end of test USREA. In most bulls, USFAT development was neither linear nor quadratic (P.05), but USREA development was linear (P.05). Prediction equations were characterized by low r2 and high residual standard deviation (RSD) values, although those for d-84 USREA had r2 values from .63 to .70 and RSD values from 4.09 to 5.80 cm2. High associations were obtained between end of test USFAT with YFAT (r = .83 to .91, P.05) and USREA with YREA (r = .74 to .84, P.05) but not for end of test USREA with WREA (r = .31 to .56, P.05). These results indicate that end of test ultrasound measurements may be a useful addition to performance testing programs.
