Automated Milking Systems (AMS) have undergone significant evolution over the past 30 yr, and their adoption continues to increase, as evidenced by the growing scientific literature. These systems offer advantages such as a reduced milking workload and increased milk yield per cow. However, given concerns about the welfare of farmed animals, studying the effects of AMS on the health and welfare of animals becomes crucial for the overall sustainability of the dairy sector. In the last few years, some analysis conducted through text mining (TM) and topic analysis (TA) approaches have become increasingly widespread in the livestock sector. The aim of the study was to analyze the scientific literature on the impact of AMS on dairy cow health, welfare, and behavior: the paper aimed to produce a comprehensive analysis on this topic using TM and TA approaches. After a preprocessing phase, a dataset of 427 documents was analyzed. The abstracts of the selected papers were analyzed by TM and a TA using Software R 4.3.1. A Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TFIDF) technique was used to assign a relative weight to each term. According to the results of the TM, the ten most important terms, both words and roots, were feed, farm, teat, concentr, mastiti, group, SCC (somatic cell count), herd, lame and pasture. The 10 most important terms showed TFIDF values greater than 3.5, with feed showing a value of TFIDF of 5.43 and pasture of 3.66. Eight topics were selected with TA, namely: 1) Cow traffic and time budget, 2) Farm management, 3) Udder health, 4) Comparison with conventional milking, 5) Milk production, 6) Analysis of AMS data, 7) Disease detection, 8) Feeding management. Over the years, the focus of documents has shifted from cow traffic, udder health and cow feeding to the analysis of data recorded by the robot to monitor animal conditions and welfare and promptly identify the onset of stress or diseases. The analysis reveals the complex nature of the relationship between AMS and animal welfare, health, and behavior: on one hand, the robot offers interesting opportunities to safeguard animal welfare and health, especially for the possibility of early identification of anomalous conditions using sensors and data; on the other hand, it poses potential risks, which requires further investigations. Enrichment increases the ability of a sow to express innate behavior in a barren environment and can reduce aggressive behaviors, stress, and promote animal welfare. The objective of this study was to determine sow interaction with different types of enrichment materials provided before farrowing. A total of 11 sows were randomly assigned an enrichment combination of cardboard, paper, and banana leaves. Sows received two enrichment types, then enrichment was switched for the following day, until all combinations were completed. The enrichment material hung from 2x4 wood using ropes that hung the enrichment and chains placed in the ceiling of the farrowing room that held the 2x4 above the pen of each sow. Therefore, enrichment was placed within the nose reach of each sow. Enrichment material (113 g) was placed in the pens at 0700 h and left for 24 h each day before changing with another enrichment combination. Any enrichment material remaining was weighed. Final weight varied by treatment (P = 0.01), with sows consuming the least of cardboard (24.9 ± 10.0 g) and having an equal preference for banana leaves and paper (74.1 ± 10.0 g and 50.1 ± 11.3 g, respectively). Scan sampling was utilized to measure the frequency of interaction with the enrichments. The scans were designed with the first hour recording every minute a sow interacted with enrichment and the following 3 hours recording every 10 minutes. Continuous observation for the first hour of placement was performed for count data. Each time the sow made contact with the enrichment with her nose, the observation was recorded. The results of the behavior observation suggested that time in contact with enrichment did not differ (P > 0.05), nor did the number of times the pig-initiated contact with enrichment (P > 0.05). In conclusion, sow preference showed that bananas and papers were preferred over cardboard. However, sows will engage with any enrichment material provided before farrowing. In recent times, there has been a growing focus on the well-being and healthcare of small ruminants, particularly in relation to the issue of anemia due to infection with blood-feeding gastrointestinal nema-todes, such as Haemonchus contortus. The objective of this study was to assess the hematocrit levels in blood samples obtained from small ruminants, specifically goats. Additionally, the study is an attempt to design and create a quick sensor for identifying anemia, which could be conveniently used on farms. A total of 75 mature, intact male Spanish goats were subjected to hematocrit analysis to ascertain their spectrum of hematocrit values and association with anemic conditions. Simultaneously, a unique sensor with user-friendly features was developed to promptly provide farmers with feedback on the anemic status of animals using AI-based machine learning algorithms, enabling timely intervention. The sensor utilized a semi-invasive approach with minimal blood sample requirement. 30 ^L of blood was dropped on glycerol soaked Whatman filter paper No. 1, and images were taken at 90 sec, 150 sec, and 270 sec to capture the blood pattern on filter paper soaked in glycerol using a cell phone. These images were correlated with actual hematocrit value obtained from conventional hematocrit analysis. A RMSprop with adjusted learning rate convolution neural network (RMSprop-CNN) based images classification model was developed for the classification of different patterns at different levels of hematocrit. The model was trained on a total of 1,000 images with a training and testing split of 80:20 ratio. For the optimization process, the Adam optimizer with a learning rate of 0.001 is employed. The model is compiled with a categorical cross-entropy loss function, aiming to improve its accuracy metric over training iterations. The initial studies demonstrated a detection accuracy level of 70.31 % at 10 epochs in identifying different hematocrit levels (Level 1; healthy, to Level 5; severely anemic) but improved significantly up to 94.89 % by 100 epochs, resulting in a notable reduction in the time and level of knowledge previously necessary for conducting such evaluations. The present study not only provides valuable insights into the hematological characteristics of small ruminants, but also establishes a foundation for the development of a straightforward and efficient method for detecting anemia. Selecting on increased breast meat yield and body weight (BW) is thought to be associated with the increasing prevalence of leg disorders. A disorder of particular importance is tibial dyschondroplasia (TD), which is characterized as uncalcified cartilage in the proximal area of the tibiotarsal bone, leading to increased lameness, reduced feed and water intake, and subsequently poorer production efficiency and increased pre-slaughter mortality. Although it is hypothesized that TD is more prevalent in fast-growing poultry, this relationship can vary across studies making it challenging to distill the relationship between BW and TD, especially as studies of TD span several decades. Therefore, a systematic literature search and meta-analysis was conducted to identify factors influencing TD incidence. To date, the systematic literature search has resulted in 21 eligible papers, although data are still being extracted from the literature. Data extracted from each study included TD incidence (%), BW (kg), species (turkeys vs. broilers), sex (male vs. female), and age (weeks) of the animals. Preliminary univariable models have been developed based on the current database. Univariable generalized linear mixed models were developed in SAS (PROC GLIMMIX) including study as a random effect to evaluate the relationship between TD incidence and BW, species, sex, and age. Turkeys (27.3 ± 0.08%) had a greater TD incidence than broilers (19.3 ± 0.03%); however, this difference was not significant (P = 0.3481). There was a tendency for age to influence TD incidence (P = 0.0553) and a significant effect of BW (P < 0.0001). TD incidence also tended to differ between the sexes, with greater incidence in males (22.9 ± 0.07%) than females (11.3 ± 0.05%; P = 0.0657). After extracting all available data from the literature, further analysis will be conducted to consider multivariable models to predict TD. As such, caution should be used when generalizing these results due to the preliminary nature of the database. With the currently available data, the results of this study support the relationship between BW/size and TD. Furthermore, this study illustrates that TD is a prevalent challenge in both major poultry species. Shade or shelter as protection from extremes of weather is required for horses at agricultural research and teaching facilities and is recommended or required by many states, professional organizations, and industry groups. The focus of this paper is the recent research on the responses of horses to hot, sunny weather, which has begun to provide scientific evidence that characterizes how and when shade is used and any benefits shade confers on horses. These behavioral and physiological findings support provision of shade as a resource for thermal comfort and the expression of normal behavior that should be included as a standard of best care practices for healthy adult horses living in the environmental conditions reviewed, rather than an absolute minimum care requirement. Additional research is required for horses living under other environmental conditions, for very young or old horses, horses in very poor body condition, or those with compromised health to determine if their responses to hot, sunny weather differ from those presented here.

Cattle health management in the feedlot sector continues to evolve and improve cattle welfare by promoting an understanding of illness and injury to minimize their effects. Many papers have focused on treating individual ill or injured cattle in cattle feeding facilities. However, care, treatment, and outcomes for chronically ill or injured cattle (“chronic cattle”) have received little attention in the literature. The purpose of this descriptive study was to present demographics, diagnoses, and outcomes of chronic cattle in 17 feedlots in the U.S. and Canada and discuss potential risk factors and welfare implications. Individual chronic cattle information and treatment records from 17 feedlots (U.S.: 8; Canada: 9) over 7 yr (2014 – 2020) were retrospectively retrieved from a large feedlot consulting and data-management service (Feedlot Health Management Services, a division of TELUS Agriculture Solutions Inc.). Chronic cattle were defined as those that had spent time in a feedlot’s designated chronic pen. Descriptive results are presented as means ± standard deviations. U.S. feedlots averaged 31,280 ± 23,231 cattle/yr, had an average chronicity rate of 2.24 ± 2.42 % (median 1.53%), and contributed 52,709 chronic cattle to the dataset. Canadian feedlots averaged 21,913 ± 10,497 cattle/yr, had an average chronicity rate of 1.41 ± 0.82% (median 1.10%), and contributed 15,940 chronic cattle to the dataset. U.S. chronic cattle were sourced across all seasons primarily from auctions and ranches, had an average arrival weight of 163 ± 59 kg, and an average days on feed (DOF) of 362 ± 172 d. Canadian chronic cattle were primarily auction-sourced in the fall, weighed 272 ± 95 kg at arrival, and averaged 246 ± 141 DOF. Chronic cattle were treated at least once for respiratory issues (U.S.: 46.3%; Canada: 26.9%), bullers (U.S.: 34.5%; Canada: 5.8%), musculoskeletal issues (U.S.: 2.2%; Canada: 1.4%), lameness (U.S.: 1.7%; Canada: 28.1%), metabolic issues (U.S.: 0.5%; Canada: 4.5%), or other diagnoses (U.S.: 2.2%; Canada: 6.3%), with many cattle treated for multiple issues (U.S.: 12.5%; Canada: 27.0%). Outcomes for chronic cattle were shipped (U.S.: 73.1%; Canada: 52.5%), railed (U.S.: 8.1%; Canada: 20.7%), euthanized (U.S.: 0.7%; Canada: 9.9%) died unassisted (U.S.: 18.1%; Canada: 16.2%), or transferred (U.S.: < 0.1%; Canada: 0.8%). These results are some of the first to describe chronic cattle populations and present interesting trends for further analysis. For example, differences in buller and lameness rates could reflect actual differences but may be artifices of the dataset and feedlot definitions. This paper will argue that understanding animal welfare and the individual vulnerability to stress-related disease requires a fundamental understanding of functional individual variation as it occurs in nature as well as the underlying neurobiology and neuroendocrinology. Ecological studies in feral populations of mice, fish, and birds start to recognize the functional significance of phenotypes that individually differ in their behavioral and neuroendocrine response to environmental challenge. Recent studies indicate that the individual variation within a species may buffer the species for strong fluctuations in the natural habitat. Similarly, evolutionary ancient behavioral trait characteristics have now been identified in a range of domestic farm animals including cattle, pigs, and horses. Individual variation in behavior can be summarized in a 3-dimensional model with coping style, emotionality, and sociality as independent dimensions. These dimensions can be considered trait characteristics that are stable over time and across situations within the individual. This conceptual model has several consequences. First, the coping style dimension is strongly associated with differential stress vulnerability. Social stress studies show that proactive individuals are resilient under stable environmental conditions but vulnerable when outcome expectancies are violated. Reactive individuals are, in fact, rather flexible and seem to adapt more easily to a changing environment. A second consequence relates to genetics and breeding. Genetic selection for one trait usually implies selection for other traits as well. It is discussed that a more balanced breeding program that takes into account biologically functional temperamental traits will lead to more robust domestic farm animals. Finally, the relationship between temperamental traits, animal production, fitness, and welfare is discussed.

The growing emphasis on ensuring the sustainability of animal agriculture is providing an impetus for the adoption of new approaches to structuring and conducting research. Sustainability is a complex topic involving many considerations related to the economic, social, and environmental impacts of production systems. Successfully addressing this topic requires multidisciplinary research as well as a high degree of communication with food system stakeholders to ensure that the research results contribute to informed decision making. In this paper, we provide an overview of a public-private partnership, the Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply (CSES), which was formed to support research evaluating the sustainability of laying hen housing systems. Because of increasing public concerns about the behavioral restriction imposed on laying hens housed in conventional cages, the U.S. egg industry is faced with a need to transition to alternative systems. However, before the CSES project, there was limited information available about how this transition might affect trade-offs related to the sustainability of egg production. The goal of the CSES project was to provide this information by conducting holistic research on a commercial farm that had 3 different hen housing systems. The CSES members represented a variety of stakeholders, including food retailers and distributors, egg producers, universities, and governmental (USDA ARS) and nongovernmental organizations. The CSES was facilitated by a not-for-profit intermediary, the Center for Food Integrity, which was also responsible for communicating the research results to food system stakeholders, including via quantitative and qualitative consumer research. In this paper, we describe the structural aspects of the CSES that were responsible for the successful completion and dissemination of the research as well as the insights that were gained regarding multidisciplinary and multi-institutional collaboration, conducting commercial-scale research, fostering and maintaining stakeholder interaction, and communicating research results. Although not without limitations, this project demonstrates that public-private partnerships can be effective strategies for addressing sustainability questions related to animal agriculture and, thus, serves as a useful model for the other animal industries.

Glucocorticoids (corticosterone in birds and rodents and cortisol in all other mammals) are glucoregulatory hormones that are synthesized in response to a range of stimuli including stress and are regularly measured in the assessment of animal welfare. Glucocorticoids have many normal or non-stress-related functions, and glucocorticoid synthesis can increase in response to pleasure, excitement, and arousal as well as fear, anxiety, and pain. Often, when assessing animal welfare, little consideration is given to normal non-stress-related glucocorticoid functions or the complex mechanisms that regulate the effects of glucocorticoids on physiology. In addition, it is rarely acknowledged that increased glucocorticoid synthesis can indicate positive welfare states or that a stress response can increase fitness and improve the welfare of an animal. In this paper, we review how and when glucocorticoid synthesis increases, the actions mediated through type I and type II glucocorticoid receptors, the importance of corticosteroid-binding globulin, the role of 11 β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, and the key aspects of neurophysiology relevant to activating the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis. This is discussed in the context of animal welfare assessment, particularly under the biological functioning and affective states frameworks. We contend that extending the assessment of animal welfare to key brain regions afferent to the hypothalamus and incorporating the aspects of glucocorticoid physiology that affect change in target tissue will advance animal welfare science and inspire more comprehensive assessment of the welfare of animals.

Grazing management and N-fertilizer have been reported to improve tropical forage productivity and quality, however, their effect on methane emission of grazing animals remains uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effects of increasing application rates of nitrogen (N) fertilization of Marandu palisadegrass under continuous stocking on intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance, and enteric methane emissions of Nellore growing bulls. We hypothesized that changes in the forage nutritive value caused by N fertilization of pastures combined with adequate grazing management (e.g. greater crude protein [ CP ] and digestibility) would lead to an increase in animal productivity (e.g. greater average daily gain [ ADG ] and gain per area), and then, to a decrease in methane emission intensity. Treatments consisted of different annual application rates of nitrogen fertilization: 0, 75, and 150 kg N/ha using ammonium nitrate (32% N) as the nitrogen source. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three treatments and four replications (12 paddocks). Intake, digestibility, N balance, and methane emissions were measured in eight animals per treatment. CP intake, digestibility and N balance increased linearly with the increase in N fertilization (P < 0.05). In addition, stocking rate (SR) and ADG linearly increased from 1.75 animal unit (AU = 450 kg)/ha and 0.62 kg/d (0 kg N/ha) to 3.75 AU/ha and 0.82 kg/d (150 kg N/ha), respectively. Individual methane emissions nor methane emission intensity were affected by treatment with an average of 164.7 g/d and 199.7 g/kg ADG (P > 0.05). Annual N fertilization with ammonium nitrate between 75 and 150 kg N/ha in palisadegrass pastures under continuous stocking enhances animal performance per unit area yet not affecting neither methane production nor intensity. Selective breeding will be crucial in meeting global challenges of ensuring food security and environmental and economic sustainability. Animal welfare affects efficiency and productivity and forms an important component of sustainability. The paper will consider the opportunities that breeding offers to improve some of the most intractable welfare challenges and, in doing so, how this will lead to direct economic and environmental benefits. Three examples will demonstrate the technical feasibility of breeding to improve welfare and will highlight the benefits to wider sustainability (lamb neonatal survival, foot infections ["foot rot"] in sheep, and aggression between pigs). Each is a long-standing and routine welfare problem. Significant moderate heritabilities (lamb vigor, which contributes to survival, 0.32; foot rot, 0.15-0.25; and aggression, 0.43) show that each can be improved by selection. New rapid and robust phenotyping methods have led to uptake (foot rot) or commercial interest in selection (survival and aggression). Careful choice of selection traits can avoid antagonistic genetic correlations with economic traits (e.g., r between aggressiveness and growth, 0.29-0.54) or lead to correlated benefits (e.g., r between foot rot and number of lambs reared to weaning, -0.6). Phenotyping welfare traits can be costly. Examples will be given of how genomic selection or selection on associative effects (heritable effects on growth of group mates) may circumvent the constraints that phenotyping costs currently pose to selection. Estimation of economic weights is difficult for many welfare traits, as their full effects on profitability have not been quantified (e.g., effects on labor requirements and immunocompetence). Economic weights need to be exaggerated in some cases to reflect this or desired gains methodology used. Improving welfare traits by selection presents ethical dilemmas. We argue that the ethical decision is simpler where opportunities for management change are few and unintended changes in other welfare traits are unlikely (e.g., lamb survival in unpredictable climates). This situation will be contrasted with the ethical considerations involved in selection against a complex social behavior (e.g., aggression). Breeding poses both threats to and opportunities for welfare. Used appropriately, it can help to improve longstanding welfare problems. The barriers to achieving this are diminishing but still significant and require a greater understanding of correlated effects on economic and noneconomic traits and low-cost but information-rich phenotyping methods. In human psychology, the link between cognition and emotions is broadly accepted. However, the idea of using the interaction between cognition and emotions as a tool for a better understanding of animal emotions or for welfare assessment is relatively new. The first avian species used in cognitive bias tests was the European starling followed by the domestic chicken and other species. The most frequently used paradigm is the affect-induced judgment bias. There are many variations of the judgment bias tests in birds. The test itself is preceded by discrimination training. Discrimination tasks vary from visual cue discrimination, discrimination of time intervals to spatial location discrimination. During the discrimination training, birds flip or do not flip the lids of the food dishes, and their latency to approach the cues in a straight alley maze, in a two-choice arena, or different locations in spatial judgment task arena are measured. Alternately, the birds fulfill operant tasks in a Skinner box. Before or after the discrimination training phase, birds are subjected to manipulations that are hypothesized to induce positive or negative emotional states. In the last stage, birds are subjected to judgment bias tests. The assumption is that animals in a negative affective state would more likely respond to ambiguous cues, as if they predict the negative event, than animals in a more positive state. However, the results of some avian studies are inconsistent, particularly those studying the effect of environmental enrichment. In starlings, each of the three studies has supplied conflicting results. In poultry, none of the four studies demonstrated a positive effect of environmental enrichment on emotional states. Only the study using unpredictable stressors in combination with environmental complexity showed that animals kept in a more complex environment are more optimistic. Manipulation of the social environment seems to be more effective in judgment bias induction. Conflicting results could be attributable to the design of the tests, the manner of affect induction, or the data analysis. Further optimization and validation of avian cognitive bias tests could help to avoid problems such as the loss of ambiguity. New methods of attention and memory bias testing are promising. However, regardless of the abovementioned complications, a cognitive bias paradigm is a valuable tool, which can help us better understand avian emotions and assess poultry welfare. Transportation losses of market-weight pigs are an animal welfare concern, and result in direct economic impact for producers and abattoirs. Such losses are related to multiple factors including pig genetics, human handling, management, and weather conditions. Understanding the factors associated with total transport losses (TTL) is important to the swine industry because it can aid decision-making, and help in the development of transportation strategies to minimize the risk of losses. Hence, the objective of this study was to investigate factors associated with TTL on market-weight pigs in typically field conditions for Midwestern United States using a generalized additive mixed model (GAMM). The final quasi-binomial GAMM included the fixed (main and interactions) effects of abattoir of destination, type of driver, average market weight, distance traveled, wind speed, precipitation, and temperature-humidity index (THI), as well as the random effects of truck companies and the combination of site of origin and period of the year. Results indicate significant associations between TTL and the main effect of all explanatory variables (P < 0.05), except for wind speed and precipitation. Interactions of average market weight × abattoir, and wind speed × precipitation were also significant. A complex nonlinear relationship between TTL and model covariates were observed for distance traveled, THI, and interaction terms. This study showed that TTL of market-weight pigs are caused by a complex system involving multiple interacting factors, which can be potentially managed to mitigate the risk of losses. In addition, the GAMM showed to be a simple and flexible approach to model TTL because it can capture nonlinear relationships, handle non-normal data, and can potentially accommodate data structure. At all times, prior to slaughter, pigs may experience stress from a range of handling practices, such as fasting, loading and transport, mixing, and interaction with humans. These factors can affect the welfare of pigs and carcass and meat quality, both individually and collectively. Preslaughter stress is both an animal welfare and a meat quality issue. Behavioral and physiological studies have revealed that poor handling practices at the farm, during transport and at the slaughter plant, have an adverse effect on pigs and may result in the loss of profits due to animal losses during transport and in lairage. Also, poor preslaughter handling can also lead to losses in carcass value as a result of reduced yield, the presence of lesions and bacterial contamination, and meat quality defects (e.g., pale, soft, exudative and dark, firm, dry pork). These economic losses can be limited by improving the design of facilities, controlling the environmental conditions, and implementing training programs for the correct animal handling at any stage preslaughter. The objective of this review was to review research findings on the effects of preslaughter practices on ante-mortem behavioral and physiological response in pigs, including muscle metabolism, and to provide recommendations aimed at limiting the impact of preslaughter handling on animal losses and pork quality. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of band and knife castration on behavioral and physiological indicators of chronic pain in beef calves at 3 different ages (36 calves/age group): 1 wk of age (Exp. 1, 4 ± 1.1 d of age, 43 ± 1.1 kg BW), 2 mo of age (Exp. 2, 63 ± 2.3 d of age, 92 ± 1.7 kg BW), and 4 mo of age (Exp. 3, 125 ± 4.6 d of age, 160 ± 3.4 kg BW). In each experiment calves were randomly assigned to either sham (CT), band (BA) or knife (KN) castration. Experiments 1, 2, and 3 ended when the testicles of banded calves had sloughed off (68, 49, and 42 d, respectively). Animal BW and rectal temperature were recorded weekly over the experimental period. Salivary cortisol, substance P, haptoglobin, scrotal area temperature using infrared thermography, visual evaluation of swelling (5-point scale), and gait stride length were collected on d -1 and immediately before castration and weekly thereafter until the end of the study. Hair samples were collected 1 d prior to and 28 d after castration and at the end of the study for cortisol concentration. Standing and lying behaviors were recorded over a 28-d period immediately after castration. No differences (P > 0.10) were observed in salivary cortisol, substance P, haptoglobin, or hair cortisol among castration methods for any of the 3 ages. No changes in behavior were observed in calves castrated at 1 wk or 2 mo of age. In 4 mo-old-calves, BA spent less time lying (P < 0.01) than CT and KN calves. Also, the average duration of lying time for BA calves was greater (P < 0.05) than for CT calves. Both, 1-wk- and 2-mo-old calves had inflammation in the scrotal area lasting 7 d after KN castration, whereas inflammation was observed for up to 14 d in 4-mo-old calves. Swelling in BA calves lasted for 21 to 28 d in the 2 younger groups of calves, whereas in 4-mo-old calves swelling was observed until d 35 postcastration. Knife- and band-castrated calves did not exhibit indicators of chronic pain or distress when the procedures were performed in calves younger than 2 mo of age. Therefore, pain mitigation should be used when castrating to improve animal welfare, especially when castrations are performed in calves older than 2 mo of age independent of the method of castration. Three experiments evaluated the effect of band and knife castration on acute pain for the first 7 d after the procedure on 1-wk-, 2-mo-, and 4-moold calves. All calves were blocked by age and weight and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: sham castration (control, CT), band castration (BA), and knife castration (KN). Experiment 1 evaluated 1-wkold Angus bull calves (n = 34; 43.0 ± 6.61 kg BW), Exp. 2 evaluated 2-mo-old Angus bull calves (n = 34; 91.5 ± 11.93 kg BW), and Exp. 3 evaluated 4-mo-old Angus bull calves (n = 35; 157.6 ± 22.52 kg BW). For all experiments, physiological and behavioral parameters were collected before (d -1 and immediately before castration [T0]) and after (60 and 120 min and on d 7) castration to assess acute pain. Physiological measures included complete blood cell count, cortisol, substance P, and scrotal temperature. Behavioral measures consisted of a visual analog scale, stride length, and time and frequency budgets for walking, standing, lying, tail flicking, foot stamping, and head turning. Performance parameters included initial and final BW and ADG. In Exp. 1, tail flicking was greater (P = 0.02) in KN calves compared to BA calves 2 to 4 h after castration, although no differences were seen between BA and KN compared to CT calves. In Exp. 2, a treatment × time interaction (P = 0.02) was observed for cortisol, where KN calves had greater cortisol concentrations 120 min after castration compared to BA and CT calves; KN calves also lay down and ate less (P < 0.01; P = 0.02) and stood and walked more (P < 0.01; P = 0.05) compared to BA and CT calves 2 to 4 h after castration. In Exp. 3, a treatment × time interaction (P < 0.01) was observed for cortisol concentrations in which all treatments were different from one another at 60 and 120 min, with BA calves having the greatest concentrations, KN calves being intermediate, and CT having the lowest concentrations. Overall, KN and BA castrated calves presented physiological and behavioral changes associated with acute pain; however, 2-mo-old BA calves presented the fewest behavioral changes and no physiological changes associated with acute pain compared to CT calves. The presence of lesions on the pig carcass is an indicator of poor animal welfare and has economic impact as it downgrades the carcass value. The assessment of the age of lesions on the carcass may help identify risk factors and ultimately prevent their occurrence. The aim of this study was to assess the age of lesions on pig carcasses through spectrophotometric color evaluation and to relate the results with gene expression and histological and histochemical parameters. A total of 96 barrows were mixed 4 times over 3 d before slaughter and 80 lesions were selected after skin lesion observations to define 4 age categories: < 7 h (T1), 7-25 h (T2), 25-30 h (T3), and 49-54 h (T4). A nonlesioned skin area was used as a control. At slaughter, 3 biopsies per lesion and control skin were taken immediately after bleeding for analyses of gene expression (CCL2, COX2, IL6, IL8, IL10, ITGA3, MMP1, TNFα, TIMP1, SERPINE1), skin histological characteristics (inflammation, erosion or ulceration, and necrosis), and enzyme activity (alkaline phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase). The number of lesions was counted on each carcass, and the color was assessed visually by a pictorial chart and instrumentally through a spectrophotometer. Delta values (Δ) were calculated as the difference between the value of the lesion and the value of the control for all measures, except for the histological analysis. Results indicated that visual color observation was not sufficiently accurate to discriminate lesions by time of infliction (P > 0.10), while the spectrophotometer ΔL* and Δa* values variation allowed the identification of < 7 h or > 25 h old lesions (P < 0.05). Similarly, the expression of CCL2, IL6, ITGA3, MMP1, and SERPINE1 genes was higher (P < 0.05) in < 7 h old lesions, while TIMP1 gene expression was higher (P < 0.05) in < 25 h old lesions. As for the histological analysis, the severity of inflammation was correlated with the age of the lesion (lower score in < 7 h old lesions and higher score in > 25 h old lesions; P < 0.05). To conclude, the spectrophotometric color assessment of the carcass lesions at slaughter appears to be a reliable method to discriminate between fresh and older lesions on the carcass at the abattoir. Footpad dermatitis and lameness are a major welfare concern in broiler chicken farming. In general, footpad lesions are linked to poor environmental conditions. Ulcers that arise from advanced lesions can negatively affect the gait of the birds, with effects on the animal welfare, including, in the worst cases, inability to reach the feed or water. In this study, the degree of footpad dermatitis and lameness was manually scored on 4 broiler farms across Europe, as part of an EU-wide welfare assessment program. The welfare of the chickens was assessed 3 times per production cycle (at wk 3, 4, and 5), scoring footpad dermatitis, lameness, and litter quality. In the same broiler farms, variables such as air temperature and relative humidity were automatically measured over the same period. These variables were combined into a widely accepted thermal comfort index and associated to upper and lower thresholds, which made it possible to quantify the percentage of time the birds spent out of the thermal comfort zone (POOC). The data was analyzed by combining data from the welfare assessments with environmental data collected by the automated monitoring systems. Considering the comparison between POOC classes, the highest probabilities of footpad dermatitis and lameness were obtained when POOC values exceeded the 70% threshold. Therefore, the analysis showed that footpad dermatitis and lameness were more frequent when the flock was exposed to poor environmental conditions for prolonged periods (P < 0.001). Since environmental conditions can be continuously measured, and the risk factor for footpad dermatitis and lameness increases with poor environmental conditions, there is the possibility to develop a detection and control system of severe lesions. Incorporating indicators for pig health and welfare at meat inspection could reduce the need for on-farm assessments. Skin and tail lesions are important welfare indicators in pigs with good potential to record during meat inspection and could possibly function as iceberg indicators of on farm welfare. The aim of this study was to validate the use of these carcass lesions at meat inspection for the assessment of pig health and welfare on farm. Thirty-one farrow-to-finish pig farms (~12% of Irish herds) were assessed using an adapted version of the Welfare Quality protocol by inspecting 6 randomly selected pens of pigs in the first weaner (4 to 8 wk), second weaner (8 to 13 wk) and finisher stage (13 to 23 wk). The average prevalence of welfare outcomes for each stage was calculated. One batch of pigs was observed at slaughter and skin and tail lesions were scored according to severity for each carcass. The average prevalence of carcass lesion outcomes was calculated for each farm. Linear regression models were developed to predict the prevalence of each welfare outcome in each stage based on the prevalence of the different carcass lesions. The welfare outcomes of different welfare aspects that were best predicted by abattoir information (highest R2) were poor body condition (first weaner stage), bursitis (second weaner stage), huddling (first weaner stage), severe tail lesions (finisher stage) and coughing (second weaner stage). Regression trees and receiver-operating curves (ROC) were used to evaluate the usefulness of carcass lesions as monitoring tools. Receiver-operating curves were created using the 75th percentile to classify farms as a problem farm for these welfare outcomes. Cut-off values of predictive carcass lesion prevalence were similar using both techniques. Models for predicting problem farms with poor body condition, bursitis and severe tail lesions were moderately accurate. Sensitivity and specificity ranged from 75 to 100% and 70 to 87%, respectively at the optimal cut-off value of the predictive carcass lesion prevalence. Results show potential for using carcass skin and tail lesions as iceberg indicators of pig health and welfare on farm. Future work is needed to evaluate the cost of including carcass lesion recording at meat inspection, the cost of failing to identify problem farms and the cost of incorrectly visiting or penalizing problem farms before carcass lesions can be used as welfare indicators in a commercial setting. The Common Swine Industry Audit (CSIA) was developed and scientifically evaluated through the combined efforts of a task force consisting of university scientists, veterinarians, pork producers, packers, processers, and retail and food service personnel to provide stakeholders throughout the pork chain with a consistent, reliable, and verifiable system to ensure on-farm swine welfare and food safety. The CSIA tool was built from the framework of the Pork Quality Assurance Plus (PQA Plus) site assessment program with the purpose of developing a single, common audit platform for the U.S. swine industry. Twenty-seven key aspects of swine care are captured and evaluated in CSIA and cover the specific focal areas of animal records, animal observations, facilities, and caretakers. Animal-based measures represent approximately 50% of CSIA evaluation criteria and encompass critical failure criteria, including observation of willful acts of abuse and determination of timely euthanasia. Objective, science-based measures of animal well-being parameters (e.g., BCS, lameness, lesions, hernias) are assessed within CSIA using statistically validated sample sizes providing a detection ability of 1% with 95% confidence. The common CSIA platform is used to identify care issues and facilitate continuous improvement in animal care through a validated, repeatable, and feasible animal-based audit process. Task force members provide continual updates to the CSIA tool with a specific focus toward 1) identification and interpretation of appropriate animal-based measures that provide inherent value to pig welfare, 2) establishment of acceptability thresholds for animal-based measures, and 3) interpretation of CSIA data for use and improvement of welfare within the U.S. swine industry. In most countries producing milk, industry- or other stakeholder-driven initiatives are in place to improve welfare and overall dairy farming sustain ability. Those initiatives typically include a system of verification of reaching targets and progress over time. Reliable indicators are a fundamental requirement to provide public assurance and allow improvement on farms. Assessing dairy cattle welfare through outcome measures of welfare is done today through visual evaluations, including those of lameness, injuries, hygiene, and body condition. Numerical scoring charts for visual evaluation have been validated, and training programs have been developed to achieve high repeatability of assessors. Sampling strategies have been validated to determine how many animals and how many days are required to obtain reliable estimates of prevalence. However, visual evaluations require long periods of data collection, and multiple visits on farm, along with repeated checks of assessors to ensure repeatability over time, are, in turn, very costly to implement. An attractive alternative is relying on automated measures as activity monitors are becoming common on commercial farms; among those, lying time retains the most attention. The use of herd lying time in both free-stall and tie-stall situations has been validated. Current research is looking at relationships between lying time and other outcome measures of welfare, as well as lying time and risk factors for welfare in the environment (e.g., poor stall configuration or hooftrimming routine). We are not quite yet ready to rely solely on lying time to assess welfare; however, activity monitoring could certainly contribute to early detection of health and welfare issues (e.g., frequency of visits to the robotic milking system). Another interesting avenue is the development of early outcome measures of welfare and, possibly, remote indicators, for example, performance data collected routinely in Dairy Herd Improvement agencies' databases. The rationale is that a herd with good health and high longevity should be at lower risk of poor welfare. Research is needed to identify predictors and their conditions of use, allowing us to discriminate good vs. poor welfare status, at both the individual and herd levels. Finally, milk samples are already collected routinely to check quality and safety. The subject of conventional crated housing systems for sows during the gestation period has been a point of debate driven by societal concerns over animal welfare to the extent that several countries, including some states in the U.S., have been instituting legislature to limit the use of gestation stalls or crates within the next decade. Furthermore, major national and international food companies are establishing policies that would require their pork supply chain to be crate-free, prompting modern sow production operations to look at alternative housing systems, even though there is no clear scientific evidence that crate-free systems are better, with the different systems presenting advantages and disadvantages. Nevertheless, one of the alternatives to the gestation stall is crate-free group housing with electronic sow feeding (ESF) systems. Variations in these types of systems exist, but most of them present opportunities to improve nutritional programs as compared to gestation stalls or other group housing systems. Individual feeding management of sows is possible with ESF, in which sows visit a feeding station and are fed after they have been recognized by a computer system. A limitation of conventional feeding systems is the inability to establish differentiated feeding program for sows based on either stage of gestation and or parity. This now becomes a practical option with ESF, which allows for more precise delivery of feed to the individual sow with the potential to better match nutrient requirements as the sow progresses through the pregnancy period resulting in reduced feed wastage, cost efficiencies, and adequate body reserves to withstand successfully the upcoming lactation periods, thus increasing longevity in the herd. Another advantage of ESF systems is the ability to collect data on all sows on a "real-time" basis, which allows timely identification of sows needing special attention and provision of individual care. Moreover, ESF systems become effectively a data collection system that could allow for a continuous research setting overcoming some of the limitations of sow nutrition research. Additionally, targeted delivery of feed additives, micronutrients, hormone technologies, or autoim-munization material during specific time windows that would require manual labor in crated systems is now possible with minimal labor through the use of an ESF station. As the swine industry continues to adapt in regards to sow housing options, we need to continue to challenge practical feeding programs and evaluate the possibilities that ESF systems have opened for improved sow nutrition. Critics of agricultural intensification have argued that the transition from smaller to larger farms has compromised animal welfare. To critically examine evidence relevant to this claim, we reviewed more than 150 publications that examined the relationship between farm size and at least one animal welfare indicator. Although much of this literature focuses on dairy cattle, we also reference other farmed species where appropriate. We found little evidence of any simple relationship, negative or positive, between farm size and animal welfare. Instead, the evidence suggests that larger farms provide some opportunities to improve animal welfare but may also create welfare risks. For example, larger farms permit more specialized and professional management of animal health but can make it more difficult to accommodate outdoor access that some view as integral to animal welfare. Future research should attempt to specify the underlying casual mechanisms by which statistical associations between farm size and indicators of welfare are believed to occur. We also suggest that policy and advocacy efforts aimed at reversing increases in farm size would be better directed toward improving welfare on farms of all sizes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pain alleviation associated with castration of piglets is an important welfare issue. The present study compares the effect of different approaches and products suitable for farmer use, with the aim to alleviate pain due to castration in piglets. A randomized within-litter design, with 28 replicate litters, compared 7 treatments: handling (H) restraint of the piglet and manipulation of the scrotum, castration without pain relief (C), 2 treatments (T2, T6) with different concentrations of tetracaine (2 and 6%) applied topically 10 min before and immediately post-surgery, and 3 treatments with i.m. injection of different nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) 10 min prior to surgery (M-meloxicam, K-ketoprofen, TA-tolfenamic acid). Efficacy of pain relief was assessed during a 300 min period after castration by serum cortisol, behavior (walking, lying, suckling, in the nest, isolated and pain related: tremors, rubbing the rear, hunching, wagging of the tail), facial expression and scrotal skin pressure sensitivity. C pigs had greater serum cortisol concentration than all other groups at 60 min post-surgery (P < 0.001), while H pigs had lower concentrations than pigs given topical anesthesia (P < 0.001) though not injected analgesia. No treatment differences were significant at 180 min, but at 300 min cortisol concentration was greater in T2 and T6 piglets than those given NSAIDs (P = 0.03). These treatment differences were mirrored by the pressure sensitivity of the scrotum; in comparison with C piglets, those given NSAIDs showed a reduced sensitivity (P = 0.003) but those given local anesthesia did not (P = 0.15). C pigs showed increased frequency of painrelated behavior in the first 30 min in comparison with all other treatments, more time isolated than H or NSAID treatments, and more time standing inactive than H or K treatments. No behavioral differences were apparent after 60 min. No differences in facial expressions were observed among treatments. In conclusion, on-farm methods for pain relief can provide some, though not complete, pain alleviation in the hours after castration. The use of topical anesthesia gave only minor benefit in comparison to NSAID agents injected prior to castration. Since the main differences in indicators of pain between positive and negative controls were observed within the first h after castration, it is important to select drugs that act quickly after administration to facilitate practical processing schedules on farm. This study evaluated the influence of floor type on sow welfare in terms of lameness, claw lesions, and skin lesions. In a 2 x 3 factorial design, we have investigated the effect of rubber coverings on concrete floors and the effect of 3 levels of dietary zinc supplementation on locomotion and claw and skin lesions in group-housed sows. Six groups of 21 ± 4 hybrid sows were monitored during 3 successive reproductive cycles. The sows were group housed from d 28 after insemination (d 0) until 1 wk before expected farrowing date (d 108) in pens with either exposed concrete floors or concrete floors covered with rubber in part of the lying area and the fully slatted area. During each reproductive cycle, locomotion and skin lesions were assessed 4 times (d 28, 50, 108, and 140) and claw lesions were assessed twice (d 50 and 140). Results are given as least squares means ± SE. Locomotion and claw scores were given in millimeters, on analog scales of 150 and 160 mm, respectively. Here, we report on the effect of floor type, which did not interact with dietary zinc concentration (P > 0.10 for all variables). At move to group (d 28) and mid gestation (d 50), no differences between floor treatments were seen in locomotion (P > 0.10). At the end of gestation (d 108), sows housed on rubber flooring scored 9.9 ± 4.1 mm better on gait (P < 0.001). Regarding claw disorders, both parameters "heel overgrowth and erosion" (difference of 4.6 ± 1.8 mm; P = 0.01) and "heel-sole crack" (difference of 3.1 ± 1.5 mm; P = 0.04) scores were better for sows on rubber flooring at mid gestation (d 50). However, sows on rubber flooring scored worse for "vertical cracks in the wall horn" (difference of 3.4 ± 1.7 mm; P = 0.04). At the end of lactation (d 140), both "white line" (difference of 2.9 ± 1 mm; P = 0.02) and "claw length" (difference of 4.7 ± 1.4 mm; P < 0.001) had better scores on rubber flooring. No differences for skin lesions were observed between floor treatments. The improved scores for gait toward the end of gestation and some types of claw disorders at mid gestation suggest that rubber flooring in group housing has a beneficial effect on the overall leg health of sows. This study examined the relationships between individual sow aggressive behavior and sow welfare, based on aggression, skin injuries, and stress, in a total of 275 pregnant domestic sows. Over 4 time replicates, sows were randomly mixed into groups of 10 (floor space of 1.8 m²/sow) within 7 d of insemination in both their first and second gestations (200 sows per gestation with 126 sows observed in both gestations). Measurements were taken on aggression (both delivered and received) at feeding, skin injuries, and plasma cortisol concentrations at d 2, 9, and 51 after mixing. Live weight gain, nonreproductive removals, litter size (born alive, total born, and stillborn piglets), and farrowing rate were also recorded. In both the first and the second gestations, sows were classified at d 2 after mixing as "submissive" (delivered little or no aggression at feeding relative to aggression received), "subdominant" (received more aggression at feeding than delivered), and "dominant" (delivered more aggression at feeding than received). In both gestations, sows classified as dominant at d 2 subsequently delivered more (gestation 1, P < 0.01; gestation 2, P < 0.01) and received less (gestation 1, P < 0.01; gestation 2, P < 0.01) aggression and gained the most weight (gestation 1, P < 0.01; gestation 2, P < 0.01). Dominant sows had the least skin injuries throughout gestation 1 (P = 0.04), and although submissive sows sustained the most skin injuries at d 9 and 51 of gestation 2, at d 2 the classifications did not differ in skin injuries (P < 0.01). Subdominant sows had the highest cortisol concentrations at d 2 of gestation 2, but there were no differences between classifications at d 9 and 51 in either gestation (gestation 1, P > 0.05; gestation 2, P = 0.02). There were no significant relationships between aggression classification and reproduction and nonreproductive removals (P > 0.05). In conclusion, sows classified as dominant at feeding at d 2 subsequently received less aggression at feeding, sustained fewer skin injuries, and had higher live weight gain. The American beef bulls have been neglected in terms of animal science research. Metabolomics is a respected for of science that will aid in developing hypothesis for future research in beef bulls. The objective of this study was to identify metabolites within a 65-day breeding season that were affect by breeding season duration and workload. Over a two-year period, 8 purebred Angus bulls owned and housed by the Cal Poly beef unit were surveyed using serum (collected via the coccygeal vein) and seminal fluid (collected via electroejaculation) at the beginning and end of a 65-day post-AI breeding season. Samples underwent HPLC-MS to observe metabolites within the fluids. Data were stratified for sample day and workload and compared using t-test for day and ANOVA for workload. Within serum, 8 metabolites of interest were observed. Effects included differences between workload groups in the abundance of guanosine (P = 0.01) a metabolite associated with purine metabolism. Within seminal fluid, 13 metabolites of interest were observed including Inosine, a metabolite also involved in purine metabolism and fluctuating based on workload (P = 0.05). The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between the animal welfare conditions evaluated through the supply chain and pork quality variation. A total of 4,680 pigs from 12 farms--5 animal welfare improved raising system (AWIRS) and 7 conventional raising system (CON) farms--were assessed from farm to slaughter through a comprehensive audit protocol merging the European Welfare Quality, the Canadian Animal Care Assessment, and American Meat Institute audit guide criteria. At the abattoir, a subsample of 1,440 pigs (120 pigs/farm) was randomly chosen out of 24 loads (2 farms per wk) transported by 2 drivers (driver A and driver B) for the assessment of stunning effectiveness, carcass bruises, blood lactate levels, and meat quality traits. Meat quality was assessed in the longissimus lumborum (LL) muscle 24 h postmortem by measuring ultimate pH (pHu), color (L*, a*, and b*), and drip loss. Data were analyzed by the MIXED, GLIMMIX, and NAPAR1WAY procedures of SAS. Spearman correlations were calculated to determine the relationship between audit scores and meat quality traits. Better animal welfare conditions, as showed by greater final scores for good housing (GHo; P = 0.001) and good health (P = 0.006) principles, were recorded at AWIRS farms. Pigs from AWIRS farms handled by driver B displayed a greater percentage of turning back (P = 0.01) and slips (P < 0.001) during unloading and a greater (P = 0.02) frequency of falls in the stunning chute. A greater (P = 0.02) reluctance to move at loading was found in CON pigs loaded by driver A compared with driver B, whereas a greater (P < 0.001) reluctance to move was found in these pigs at unloading when they were unloaded by driver B. Drip loss was higher (P = 0.003) and pale, soft, and exudative pork percentage was greater (P < 0.001) in the LL muscle of the heavier AWIRS pigs. The GHO principle was best correlated with pHu (r = -0.75, P = 0.01) and Minolta L* value (r = 0.87, P < 0.001) of the LL muscle. Overall, drip loss variation in the LL muscle was correlated with the frequency of slips at unloading (r = 0.63, P = 0.001) and in the restrainer area (r = 0.74, P < 0.001). The results of this study showed that the quality of the raising system and truck driver skills as assessed by animal welfare audit protocols are important sources of variation in the behavioral response of pigs to preslaughter handling and may affect pork quality variation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of nonpenetrating captive bolt stunning followed by electrical induction of cardiac arrest on veal calf welfare, veal quality, and blood yield. Ninety calves from the same farm were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups in a balanced unpaired comparison design. The first treatment group (the "head-only" method--application of the pneumatic nonpenetrating stun to the frontal plate of the skull at the intersection of 2 imaginary lines extending from the lateral canthus to the opposite poll [CONTROL]) was stunned with a nonpenetrating captive bolt gun (n = 45). The second group (n = 45) was stunned with a nonpenetrating captive bolt gun followed by secondary electrical induction of cardiac arrest (the "head/heart" method-- initial application of the pneumatic nonpenetrating captive bolt stun followed by 1 s application of an electrical stun to the ventral region of the ribcage directly caudal to the junction of the humerus and scapula while the stunned calf was in lateral recumbence [HEAD/ HEART]). Stunning efficacy was the indicator of animal welfare used in this study. All calves were instantly rendered insensible by the initial stun and did not display common indicators of return to consciousness. For meat quality evaluation, all samples were collected from the 12th rib region of the longissimus thoracis. Meat samples were evaluated for color, drip loss, ultimate pH, cook loss, and Warner-Bratzler shear force. The L* values (measure of meat color lightness) were darker (P < 0.05) in the HEAD/HEART group (45.08 ± 0.72) than the CONTROL group (47.10 ± 0.72). There were no differences (P > 0.05) observed in a* (redness) and b* (yellowness) values between treatments. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed in drip loss, ultimate pH, cook loss, and Warner-Bratzler shear force. The blood yield from the CONTROL group (7,217.9 ± 143.5 g) was greater (P < 0.05) than that from the HEAD/HEART group (6,656.4 ± 143.5 g). Overall, the data indicated no difference between the CONTROL and HEAD/HEART groups with regard to animal welfare because the initial stun was effective in all calves. However, longissimus thoracis L* and blood yield were negatively impacted by the HEAD/HEART method. The aim of this study was to identify parameters that may be used as objective measures of wellbeing in weaner pigs on farm. Eighty-six weaner pigs were categorized into 3 groups based on their BCS: very compromised (VC, BCS = 1), moderately compromised (MC, BCS = 2), or healthy (HY, BCS ≥ 3). Nonphysiological and physiological measures were then collected from the pigs. Nonphysiological measures included 3 subjective binary scores that assessed the activity, hairiness, and responsiveness of each pig. Physiological measures included rectal temperature, skin temperature, and 11 blood-based parameters. Each physiological measure was assessed in a ternary manner, with pigs being classed as being above, below, or within the normal physiological range. Fisher's exact tests (FET) were used to identify differences between the numbers of pigs in each BCS category for each variable, and ANOVA of physiological measures was also conducted. Correlations between all variables were also conducted. The FET results identified significant differences for 8 of the measures, with activity, hairiness, responsiveness, rectal temperature, and blood concentrations of glucose, creatinine kinase (CK), albumin, and globulin all differing significantly (all P < 0.05) according to category. Rectal temperature, glucose, and globulin concentrations were significantly different in ANOVA analyses. Of these measures, there were significant correlations between hairiness, rectal temperature, and glucose (all R > 0.30 and P < 0.05). Based on these results, rectal temperature, glucose, and hairiness all warrant further investigation as simple to apply, on-farm measures that can be used in conjunction with body condition and subjective assessment to aid management decisions on pig welfare. Angus crossbred bulls (n = 60; 257 ± 5.4 d of age; initial BW 358.8 ± 3.78 kg) were used to study the effect of a vaccine against gonadotropin-releasing factor (GnRF) and band castration on behavioral and physiological indicators of pain. Cattle were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: bulls, band-castrated calves without pain mitigation (castrated), and immune-vaccinated animals administered an anti-GnRF vaccine (vaccinated). All animals were fitted with a radio frequency ear tag so that individual animal feed intake and feeding behavior were recorded daily over the entire trial using an electronic feed bunk monitoring system. Two doses of anti-GnRF vaccine were administrated on d -35 and 0 and band castration was performed on d 0. Animal BW was recorded weekly starting on d -36 until d 56. Visual analog scores (VAS) were measured on d -36 -35, -1, and 0, and salivary cortisol concentration was measured at -30, 0, 30, 60, 120, and 270 min on d -35 and 0 after castration. Saliva and blood were obtained on d 1, 2, 5, and 7 and weekly until d 56 for determination of cortisol and complete blood cell count. Video data were collected for pain, sexual, and aggressive behavior daily the first week and once a week until d 56. Data were analyzed with a mixed-effect model with castration, time, and their interactions as main effects. Vaccinated calves had reduced ADG and intake (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively) during the first week after vaccination. Band-castrated calves had reduced ADG and intake (P < 0.001) until the end of the study. No differences in salivary cortisol and VAS were observed among groups at d -35 after the first vaccination and before band castration. However, on d 0, castrated cattle had greater cortisol concentrations and VAS (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively) than bulls and vaccinated animals. Complete blood cell count did not differ (P > 0.05) between treatments on d 0, 1, and 2. At d 56, vaccinated calves had greater (P < 0.05) final BW than band-castrated calves and both had less final BW than bulls. There was no indication that vaccination caused any physiological or behavioral changes indicative of pain. In contrast, band castration resulted in elevated cortisol scores and VAS indicative of a pain response and behavior related to pain (P < 0.001) until d 42 of the study. The present study demonstrates that anti-GnRF vaccine is a viable animal welfare-friendly alternative to traditional band castration in beef cattle under North American feedlot practices. The motion of ships can cause discomfort and stress in humans, but little is known about the impact on sheep welfare, despite many sheep traveling long distances by ship during live export. We tested whether exposing sheep to roll (side to side movement), heave (up and down movement), and pitch (front to back movement) with similar amplitude and period conditions to a commercial livestock transport vessel would affect their behavior and physiology. Specifically, we tested the effects of these motions and a control treatment on behavior, heart rate variability, rumination, body posture, and balance of sheep. Four sheep (37 ± 0.1 kg) were restrained in pairs in a crate, which was placed on a moveable and programmable platform that generated roll and pitch motions. An electric forklift was used to produce heave motion. The treatments were applied for 30 min each time in a changeover design with 1 repetition over 8 consecutive days. Sheep behavior was recorded continuously from video records, and heart rate monitors were attached to determine heart rate and its variability. Heave reduced the time that sheep spent ruminating, compared with the other 3 treatments (P < 0.001). The 2 sheep spent more time during heave with their heads 1 above the head of the other (P < 0.001) and looking toward their companion (P = 0.02), indicating greater affiliative behavior. Sheep spent more time during heave standing with their back supported on the crate (P = 0.006) and less time lying down (P = 0.01). Roll caused more stepping motions than pitch and control, indicating loss of balance (P < 0.001). Sheep experiencing heave and roll had increased heart rates and reduced interbeat intervals (IBI) compared to the control (P < 0.001). The IBI of sheep in the heave treatment had an increased ratio of low to high frequency duration (P = 0.01), indicating reduced parasympathetic control of stress responses. Therefore, there was both behavioral and physiological evidence that heave and roll caused stress, with sheep experiencing roll apparently coping better by regular posture changes and heave causing the sheep to seek the close presence of their companion. In August 2019, a fire at Tyson's Finney County, Kansas, beef plant removed approximately 5% of U.S. beef packing capacity for 3 months. Subsequent COVID-19 pandemic-related precautions and workforce illness caused multiple packing plants across the country to decrease or stop production in the spring of 2020. Both events resulted in feedlots being unable to ship cattle at optimal finish points or according to projection. Estimates of the number of cattle backlogged during 2020 approach 1 million. Producers were faced with decisions on how to manage finished animals that could not be shipped while considering economic, animal welfare, and animal health outcomes. Many factors further complicated the situation including highly volatile markets, the possibility employee quarantine due to personal or family illness would cause operations to be under-staffed, and shortage of available pens for new cattle. Feeders had the option to slow the rate of growth of finished cattle due to the ability of ruminant animals to utilize low-energy feedstuffs or by calculating programmed rates of gain using the net energy system. Instead, many producers chose to attempt maximal rates of gain hoping persistent growth and feeding margins would offset discounts due to heavy carcass weights and excess fatness when the supply chain began moving again. Regarding new placements, the structure of the beef industry is uniquely developed to absorb cattle in stocker and backgrounding operations. This presentation will review the factors impacting cattle production and provide case-studies related to feeding at maintenance and growth rates, efficiencies, and carcass outcomes of held cattle from an operation and industry level. Animal welfare within the U.S. slaughter industry continues to prevail as one of the top priorities for livestock producers, businesses, and consumers alike. There are federal regulations that enforce the humane transport, handling, and slaughter of cattle. The journey that cattle must make to the slaughter facility is comprised of many environmental and human factors that can positively or negatively affect animal welfare. Cattle may be exposed to multiple stressors, such as noise, unfamiliar animals and humans, temperature extremes, temporary food/water deprivation, variable transport distances and experiences, and new pen conditions. The animal caretakers involved in these processes attempt to minimize stress and discomfort for the animals, but research is needed to focus on the gaps in knowledge and to support the implementation of strategies known to enhance the human–animal interactions that occur from farm to slaughter. This literature review will provide a summary of fed cattle welfare topics, research, and industry tools that span across the beef animal's journey from the farm/feedlot through the slaughter process. In addition, areas that have had little research focus are identified to highlight the need for future work and development of industry tools. Some of these topics include examining trailer design, the use of trailer slats during weather extremes, the welfare aspects of cattle destined for salvage slaughter, multiple preslaughter factors and interactions, abnormal mobility and nonambulatory cattle, lairage environmental conditions, new stunning methods, and the impact of a well-trained, motivated, and stable workforce on cattle and people welfare. The authors conducted a survey at the 2019 North American Meat Institute Animal Care and Handling Conference, which comprised of stakeholders within the meat packing industry, packing plant employees, and food company employees, educators, and auditors. The survey responses identified training/education and communication as areas of need in animal welfare, whereas the majority of survey responses focused on the aspects of the human–animal interaction as the top challenges for the industry. By continuously identifying, measuring, monitoring, and managing animal welfare challenges within the beef cattle slaughter industry, prioritization and execution of programs and training that improve the welfare of cattle can be achieved as animals move through this final stage of the meat production system. Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) causes significant economic losses to the feedlot industry due to decreased production and increased costs associated with treatment. This study aimed to assess the impacts of BRD on performance, carcass traits, and economic outcomes defined using four BRD diagnosis methods: number of BRD treatments an animal received, pleural lesions at slaughter, lung lesions at slaughter, and clinical BRD status defined using both treatment records and lung and pleural lesions. Crossbred steers (n = 898), with an initial body weight of 432 kg (± SD 51), were followed from feedlot entry to slaughter. Veterinary treatment records were collected and lungs scored at slaughter for lesions indicative of BRD. There was an 18% morbidity rate and a 2.1% BRD mortality rate, with an average net loss of AUD$1,647.53 per BRD mortality. Animals treated ≥3 times for BRD had 39.6 kg lighter carcasses at slaughter and returned an average of AUD$384.97 less compared to animals never treated for BRD (P < 0.001). Animals with severe lung lesions at slaughter grew 0.3 kg/d less, had 14.3 kg lighter carcasses at slaughter, and returned AUD$91.50 less than animals with no lung lesions (P < 0.001). Animals with subclinical and clinical BRD had 16.0 kg and 24.1 kg lighter carcasses, respectively, and returned AUD$67.10 and AUD$213.90 less at slaughter, respectively, compared to healthy animals that were never treated with no lesions (P < 0.001). The severity of BRD based on the number of treatments an animal received and the severity of lung and pleural lesions reduced animal performance, carcass weight and quality, and economic returns. Subclinical BRD reduced animal performance and economic returns compared to healthy animals; however, subclinical animals still had greater performance than animals with clinical BRD. This information can be used to plan for strategic investments aimed at reducing the impacts of BRD in feedlot cattle such as improved detection methods for subclinical animals with lesions at slaughter and BRD treatment protocols. Livestock production faces new challenges as current and pending legislation and media propaganda seeks to alter current management practices. Therefore, researchers and producers must search for alternative management strategies to mitigate possible negative effects associated with these regulatory changes. While the effects of stress on immune function have been studied in considerable detail, there are unexplored factors that influence immune function and animal health. Implementing new health management and nutritional protocols will require a more in-depth understanding of the biological system of an animal, especially related to how nutrition influences the immune system and overall health of the animal. Nutritional immunology will most likely become a central theme as livestock producers explore opportunities to improve animal health and performance in production facilities. This will require a greater multidisciplinary scientific approach to understand how the metabolic status of an animal may influence aspects of the immune system from cellular signaling to antibody generation. There will need to be an increased effort associated with understanding the nutrient requirements associated with maintaining a healthy immune system as well as understanding the nutrient requirements of an animal undergoing or recovering from an immunological challenge. There will need to be more focus on understanding the differential programming of animals as it pertains to nutrient partitioning and energy utilization and why some animals are more resilient to immunological insults while some animals are more susceptible. Exploring and understanding prenatal and perinatal strategies for preprogramming the immune system to improve postnatal health will allow for new opportunities for improving overall animal production. Understanding how energy availability and whether endogenous (e.g., genetic selection of animals) or exogenous sources (e.g., dietary supplementation) can be an effective mediator of immune function not only to reduce the severity of animal diseases but also how it can be utilized to enhance recovery and restore homeostasis is of importance. While there will undoubtedly be multiple challenges ahead for livestock producers, there will also be exciting opportunities. Development of "designer diets" that contain various pre and/ or probiotic compounds or specific combinations of nutrients that are specific not only for different management systems and different stages of production but also for targeting specific pathogens, will undoubtedly reveal novel nutritional strategies for improving future livestock production. How animals are housed may have recently become a hot topic to consumers, but it has always been a priority to animal caretakers. For example, moving pigs from a snow-covered dirt lot to an environmentally controlled building in the 1970s is a form of implementing modern housing to improve animal well-being and, in fact, probably was the largest improvement in swine well-being in 50 yr. More recently, consumer demand has forced pork producers to rethink housing gestat-ing sows, specifically in group pens. This is not a new theory. Historically, sows have been housed in group pens before the implementation of the gestation stall. However, with modern genetics and technological advances, new group-housing options exist and need to be reconsidered. There are multiple options to consider when deciding which housing system to implement, such as existing facility design, reliability, and durability of the system; access to technical support; feeding strategies; grouping strategies; ease of access to animals; and, most importantly, animal well-being and employee capabilities. It is important for the system adopted to be compatible with the caretaker's abilities, because proper husbandry will have a larger impact on animal well-being than a housing system. Sows in any housing system can be managed poorly or extremely well. Therefore, determining which system works best for the caretaker's management style is the most important contribution to animal well-being. Other things to consider when deciding on which housing system to implement are the durability and reliability of the housing system. The capital cost to renovate an existing facility is substantial. Making sure that the equipment invested in is durable enough to sustain the environment will allow the employees more time caring for animals than repairing equipment. There are facility changes that can be implemented after selecting a group-housing system for sows that allow for the caretaker to have easier access to the animals and to provide better care, such as slide-through gates between pens or reducing the gap width of slatted floors. Another form of management strategy to improve well-being of group-housed sows is to consider alternative feeding strategies. Feeding a more fibrous diet may increase satiety and reduce competition. Overall, when adopting a new housing system or technology, there are several management strategies that can be implemented to improve well-being, but the most important to consider is the caretaker's ability and understanding of how to manage that system and, therefore, care for the animals.
