This study aimed at investigating the effects of decreasing crude protein (CP) in diets with constant rumen undegradable protein (RUP) content on dry matter (DM) intake, growth, feed efficiency (FE) and blood parameters in calves in a randomized complete block design. Dietary treatments included: (a) a calf starter containing 200 g/kg CP (62 g/kg RUP, based on DM), (b) a starter containing 180 g/kg CP (65 g/kg RUP, based on DM) and (c) a starter containing 160 g/kg CP (65 g/kg RUP, based on DM). A total 42 newborn male and female Holstein calves were fed 8 L milk/day until day 45, after which they were weaned and continued the experiment until day 75. Solid feed intake and total DM intake were measured daily, and body weight and skeletal growth parameters including withers height and heart girth were recorded weekly. Blood samples were collected on days 45 and 75. Solid feed intake, total DM intake, weaning weight, average daily gain from birth to weaning and from birth to 75 days, final weight and FE were not affected by the experimental treatments. In addition, skeletal growth parameters were similar among groups. Glucose concentration was similar among treatments; however, calves fed the starter containing 160 g/kg CP had significantly lower plasma concentrations of albumin and urea nitrogen compared with those fed starters containing 180 and 200 g/kg CP. These results indicate that CP level in the calf starter could be decreased to 160 g/kg DM if RUP levels stay at 65 g/kg DM, without negatively affecting feed intake and calf performance. Incubations were carried out with batch cultures of ruminal micro-organisms from sheep to analyse the influence of the N source on in vitro CH4 production. The two substrates were mixtures of maize starch and cellulose in proportions of 75:25 and 25:75 ( STAR and CEL substrates, respectively), and the three nitrogen (N) sources were ammonia ( NH4Cl), casein ( CA) and isolated soya bean protein ( SP). Five isonitrogenous treatments were made by replacing non-protein-N ( NPN) with CA or SP at levels of 0 ( NPN), 50 ( CA50 and SP50, respectively) and 100% ( CA100 and SP100) of total N. All N treatments were applied at a rate of 35 mg of N/g of substrate organic matter and incubations lasted 16.5 h. With both proteins, N source × substrate interactions (p = 0.065 to 0.002) were detected for CH4 production and CH4/total VFA ratio. The increases in CH4 production observed by replacing the NPN with protein-N were higher (p < 0.05) for STAR than for CEL substrate, but the opposite was observed for the increases in volatile fatty acid ( VFA) production. As a consequence, replacing the NPN by increased levels of CA or SP led to linear increases (p < 0.05) in CH4/total VFA ratio with STAR, whereas CH4/total VFA ratio tended (p < 0.10) to be decreased with CEL substrate. Increasing the amount of both proteins decreased linearly (p < 0.05) ammonia-N concentrations, which may indicate an incorporation of amino acids and peptides into microbial protein without being first deaminated into ammonia-N. In incubations with the tested N sources as the only substrate, the fermentation of 1 mg of CA or SP produced 1.24 and 0.60 μmol of CH4 respectively. The results indicate the generation of CH4 from protein fermentation, and that the response of CH4 production to protein-N supply may differ with the basal substrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study tried to determine the protein and energy requirements of growing beluga sturgeon Huso huso using a factorial approach. The experiment was composed of four small-scale growth trails covering different weight ranges. The fish fed at 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% of satiation. DWG had a steady increase throughout the experiment following a non-linear equation as Y = 1.433 (±0.056) × Ln(X) −2.740 (±0.261); r 2 = 0.99, p < 0.001, where Y = weight gain (g/day) and X = fish weight (g). The daily requirement of digestible energy (DE) for maintenance amounted to 79.09 kJ × BW (kg)0.8. The daily requirement of DP for maintenance calculated as 0.93 g × BW (kg)0.7. The relationship between DE intake (X) and DE gain (Y) expressed as Y = −0.0004 (±0.000) X2 + 0.600 (±0.082) X −44.95 (± 6.72). Also, the relationship between DP intake (X) and protein gain (Y) was expressed as Y = −0.019 (±0.006) X2 + 0.548 (±0.062) X − 0.498 (±0.121). The daily requirements of energy and protein were estimated as 79.09 kJ × BW (kg)0.8 + 2.94 × DE gain and 0.93 g × BW (kg)0.7 + 2.63 × DP gain. Apparently, beluga sturgeon is inefficient in converting energy and protein into body tissue. Therefore, energy content of the diet should be sufficiently high to satisfy large energy demands in beluga sturgeon and also to reduce the catabolism of protein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hand rearing of neonates is a common practice for the propagation of psittacines. However, nutritional requirements for their growth and development are not well understood, and malnutrition is common. We analysed the amino acid (AA) profile of the crop contents of 19 free-living scarlet macaw ( Ara macao) chicks, 19-59 days old. Predicted metabolizable energy (PME) density was 16.9 MJ/kg DM and true protein (total AA protein) 8.3 g/MJ PME. Crude protein (CP) was 10.0 g/MJ PME, lower than the requirements of 0- to 12-week-old leghorn chicks but not different than the requirements of growing budgerigars ( Melopsittacus undulatus) and lovebirds ( Agapornis spp.). The mean concentrations of leucine, isoleucine, threonine, lysine (Lys) and methionine on a PME basis were below the minimum requirements of 0- to 12-week-old leghorn-type chicks. The calculated PME density of the samples did not vary with age. However, there was a significant negative correlation between the average age of the chicks and the Lys concentration. We conclude that the lower CP and AA densities compared with poultry could result from a combination of (i) differences in the essential AA composition of the body tissues, (ii) adaptations that allow the birds to grow on low-protein food sources and (iii) suboptimal nutrition of these free-ranging chicks. Postprandial oxidation of dietary free amino acids or egg white protein was studied using the [13CO2] breath test in rats, as well as in humans. Thirty-eight male rats were assigned to four dietary test groups. Two diets only differed in their protein fraction. Diet I contained 21% egg white protein. For the breath test egg white protein, intrinsically labelled with [1-13C]-leucine, was used as a substrate. Diet II contained the same amino acids as diet I, though not as egg white protein but in free form. Free [1-13C]-leucine was used to label this diet. In addition, two 1:1 mixtures of both diets were used. During the breath test either the free amino acid or the protein fraction was labelled as in diets I or II. The animals were breath-tested following short-term (day 5) and long-term adaptation (day 20) to their experimental diet. For all diets, including the mixed diets, postprandial oxidative losses on day 5 were significantly higher for the free leucine compared with the protein-derived leucine. Differences between free and protein-derived leucine oxidation had, however, largely disappeared on day 20. The human subjects were breath-tested without any adaptation period to the diets. The oxidative losses of free leucine were also higher than those of protein-derived leucine. None of the studies showed any indication for an interaction between the oxidation of protein-derived amino acids and free amino acids. We investigated the whole-body crude nutrient (fat, protein, ash) and mineral (Ca, P, Mg, Na, K) composition of mustached bats of three different groups: animals from the wild ( n = 6), and animals from captivity on an unsupplemented feeding regime of mealworms ( n = 7), and on a feeding regime in which the mealworms were kept on a mineral substrate prior to feeding ( n = 6). It was shown that mealworms from the mineral substrate had higher Ca contents than mealworms from the conventional substrates. In an earlier study, differences in bone mineral density had been found between the groups. These differences, however, were not reflected in differences in whole-body composition. Captive animals showed a larger variation in body weight and fat content, indicating potential shortcomings of the dietary and husbandry regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
