1. Floodplain environments are increasingly subject to enhancement and restoration, with the purpose of increasing their biodiversity and returning them to a more ‘natural’ state. Defining such a state based solely upon neoecological data is problematic and has led several authors to suggest the use of a palaeoecological approach. 2. Fossil Coleopteran assemblages recovered from multiple palaeochannel fills in south-west England were used to investigate past floodplain and channel characteristics during the mid- to late-Holocene. Ordination of coleopteran data was performed using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) and produced clear and discrete clustering. This clustering pattern is related to the nature of the environment in which assemblages were deposited and hence channel configuration and dynamics. 3. The DCA clustering pattern is strongly related to measures of ecological evenness, and a strong relationship between these indices and the composition of the water beetle assemblage within samples was revealed. Repeating the ordination with presence–absence data results in a similar pattern of clustering, implying that assemblage composition is crucial in determining cluster placement. 4. As assemblage composition is primarily a function of floodplain topography and hence disturbance regime, we attempt to relate these data to the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH). A significant positive correlation was found between ecological diversity (Shannon's H′) and Axis 1 of all ordinations in predominantly aquatic assemblages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1. Two published data sets of helminths of the wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus (L.) were analysed to test the hypothesis that the structure of these component communities is influenced by interactions between species. A range of tests, with differing null models, was applied to tease out the importance of controlling for subgroupings (e.g. sex, age, site, year, season) within the data when searching for significant associations based on prevalence (co-occurrence, presence/absence) or abundance (quantitative associations) data. 2. Significant differences from null models were detected for associations based on prevalence, but when subgroup constraints were taken into consideration, most lost significance. Among three and 15 pair-wise associations possible in data sets 1 and 2, respectively, only that between Trichuris muris and Heligmosomoides polygyrus was not dependent on context, and that between H. polygyrus and Catenotaenia pusilla, while always positive, varied in magnitude among sites of capture. 3. Pair-wise comparisons of abundance revealed three significant associations, only one of which ( H. polygyrus with C. pusilla) still remained significant after controlling for quantified extrinsic and intrinsic factors . With increasing burdens of H. polygyrus, mice carried more of other helminth species and this relationship remained significant after controlling for confounding factors. 4. Overall, positive co-occurrences of pairs of helminths of A. sylvaticus were highly context dependent and quantitative associations were weak and not convincing. Therefore, interactions between parasites are unlikely to play a dominant role among the processes that structure the component community of helminths in wood mice, in selected study sites in the south of England. Summary 1.Long-tailed tits Aegithalos caudatus L. are cooperative breeders in which breeders that have failed in their own breeding attempt become helpers at the nest of relatives. We investigated the effects of kinship on the spatial dynamics of non-breeding flocks of long-tailed tits in order to determine the information available on the kinship of other members of the population from their use of home ranges. 2.A novel method of home range analysis was devised based on ‘convex hull peeling’. This method takes into account the dispersion of all fixes within a home range and permits the quantitative analysis of home range use. In addition, the method allows the extent of overlap between adjacent home ranges to be determined and the use of those areas to be investigated. 3.Non-breeding flocks of long-tailed tits were composed mainly of relatives, but also included unrelated immigrants. Flock ranges were large and there was extensive overlap between adjacent flocks. 4.The degree of range overlap was significantly affected by the relatedness of flocks. If two flocks contained close relatives they were more likely to overlap than two flocks containing non-relatives. Moreover, the amount of overlap was significantly greater for two adjacent related flocks than for two adjacent unrelated flocks. 5.The use of overlapping areas of non-breeding ranges of long-tailed tit flocks was also influenced significantly by relatedness. Overlapping flocks that were unrelated to each other usually avoided areas of overlap, while related flocks did not generally show such avoidance behaviour. 6.Kinship has significant effects on the spatial dynamics of non-breeding flocks of long-tailed tits and therefore flock behaviour can provide information on the relatedness of other members of the population that might be important for helping decisions in this cooperatively breeding species. Summary: 1. The European badger (Meles meles) is implicated as a reservoir of Mycobacterium bovis (bovine TB) infection for cattle in Britain and Ireland. In the present study the spatio-temporal distribution of M. bovis infection was investigated. Analyses were carried out on data from a long-term epidemiological and ecological study of the dynamics of bovine TB in a wild population of badgers at Woodchester Park in south-west England. 2. During the 15 years of the capture–mark–recapture study (1982–96), 3316 trapping and post-mortem records were obtained from 1270 individual badgers. Annual prevalence of infection based on positive serological and bacterial tests varies between 10·3% and 17·7% of the population. 3. Infection was aggregated in social groups in the west of the study area, confirming the findings of previous studies. However, temporal trends in disease were not synchronized amongst neighbouring groups, suggesting low rates of disease transfer between them. 4. There was significant serial correlation in the disease status within groups over time, suggesting that infection persists for many years in some social groups. The presence of infectious adult female badgers in groups was associated with new infections, and provides further evidence for their importance in the maintenance of infection within groups. However, no statistically significant correlations were detected between the demographic characteristics of social groups and group infection status. 5. The distribution of disease reflects stable persistent foci of infection in the badger population, with limited evidence of transfer between social groups. The accurate identification of stable foci of infection would allow a range of management strategies for the control of bovine TB to be efficiently targeted in such populations.
