Abstract

The article explores the states of the folklore profession and folklore study in China and the U.S. through an exchange between scholars Wang Dun, Kang Baocheng, and Robert Baron. Emphasis is given to the academic training of folklore students engaged in studying Chinese folklore. Other topics include the relationship between drama and folklore, the issue of authenticity, and government intervention in folk cultural processes.
