A splinter is a notion of singularity that has seen numerous recent applications, especially in connection with the direct summand theorem, the mixed characteristic minimal model program, Cohen-Macaulayness of absolute integral closures and cohomology vanishing theorems. Nevertheless, many basic questions about these singularities remain elusive. One outstanding problem is whether the splinter property spreads from a point to an open neighborhood of a noetherian scheme. Our paper addresses this problem in prime characteristic, where we show that a locally noetherian scheme that has finite Frobenius or that is locally essentially of finite type over a quasi-excellent local ring has an open splinter locus. In particular, all varieties over fields of positive characteristic have open splinter loci. Intimate connections are established between the openness of splinter loci and $F$-compatible ideals, which are prime characteristic analogues of log canonical centers. We prove the surprising fact that for a large class of noetherian rings with pure (aka universally injective) Frobenius, the splinter condition is detected by the splitting of a single generically \'etale finite extension. In this paper, we consider the homogeneous coordinate rings $A(Y_{n,d}) \cong \mathbb{K}[\Omega_{n,d}]$ of monomial projections $Y_{n,d}$ of Veronese varieties parameterized by subsets $\Omega_{n,d}$ of monomials of degree $d$ in $n+1$ variables where: (1) $\Omega_{n,d}$ contains all monomials supported in at most $s$ variables and, (2) $\Omega_{n,d}$ is a set of monomial invariants of a finite diagonal abelian group $G \subset GL(n+1,\mathbb{K})$ of order $d$. Our goal is to study when $\mathbb{K}[\Omega_{n,d}]$ is a quadratic algebra and, if so, when $\mathbb{K}[\Omega_{n,d}]$ is Koszul or G-quadratic. For the family (1), we prove that $\mathbb{K}[\Omega_{n,d}]$ is quadratic when $s \ge \lceil \frac{n+2}{2} \rceil$. For the family (2), we completely characterize when $\mathbb{K}[\Omega_{2,d}]$ is quadratic in terms of the group $G \subset GL(3,\mathbb{K})$, and we prove that $\mathbb{K}[\Omega_{2,d}]$ is quadratic if and only if it is Koszul. Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is greater than the socle degree of $A$, we show that $A$ is almost strong Lefschetz. This quite modest result is nevertheless arguably the most encompassing so far concerning the strong Lefschetz property for graded codimension three AG algebras.

In this paper we study the geometric structure of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $GL_3$ and $b$ basic. We completely determine the irreducible components of the affine Deligne-Lusztig variety. In particular, we classify the cases where all of the irreducible components are classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties times finite-dimensional affine spaces. If this is the case, then the irreducible components are pairwise disjoint.

In this paper, we compute the essential $p$-dimension of the split finite quasi-simple groups of classical Lie type at the defining prime, specifically the quasi-simple groups arising from the general linear and special linear groups, the symplectic groups, and the orthogonal groups.

We study exceptional minuscule Schubert varieties and provide the defining equations of the defining ideals of their intersection with the big open cell. For $G=GL(n,\mathbb{C})$ and a parabolic subgroup $P=LN$ with a two-block Levi subgroup $L=GL(n_1)\times GL(n_2)$, the space $G\cdot (\mathcal{\mathcal{O}}+\mathfrak{n})$, where $\mathcal{O}$ is a nilpotent orbit of $\mathfrak{l}$, is a union of nilpotent orbits of $\mathfrak{g}$. In the first part of our main theorem, we use the geometric Sakate equivalence to prove that $\mathcal{O'}\subset G\cdot (\mathcal{\mathcal{O}}+\mathfrak{n})$ if and only if some Littlewood-Richardson coefficients do not vanish. The second part of our main theorem describes the geometry of the space $\mathcal{O}\cap\mathfrak{p}$, which is an important space to study for the Whittaker supports and annihilator varieties of representations of $G$.

We characterize Hilbert polynomials that give rise to Hilbert schemes with two Borel-fixed points and determine when the associated Hilbert schemes or their irreducible components are smooth. In particular, we show that the Hilbert scheme is reduced and has at most two irreducible components. By describing the singularities in a neighbourhood of the Borel-fixed points, we prove that the irreducible components are Cohen-Macaulay and normal. Let $C:f=0$ be a reduced curve in the complex projective plane. The minimal degree $mdr(f)$ of a Jacobian syzygy for $f$, which is the same as the minimal degree of a derivation killing $f$, is an important invariant of the curve $C$, for instance it can be used to determined whether $C$ is free or nearly free. In this note we study the relations of this invariant $mdr(f)$ with a decomposition of $C$ as a union of two curves $C_1$ and $C_2$, without common irreducible components. When all the singularities that occur are quasihomogeneous, a result by Schenck, Terao and Yoshinaga yields finer information on this invariant in this setting. Using this, we give some geometrical criteria, the first ones of this type in the existing literature as far as we know, for a line to be a jumping line for the rank 2 vector bundle of logarithmic vector fields along a reduced curve $C$., Comment: v4. The definition of Milnor-Witt cycle modules in [Feld, N., Milnor-Witt cycle modules, Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 224 (2020) 106298] can easily be adapted over general regular base schemes. However, there are simple examples to show that Gersten complex fails to be exact for cycle modules in general if the base is not a field. The goal of this article is to show that, for a restricted class of Milnor-Witt cycle modules over an excellent DVR satisfying an extra axiom, called here as R5, the expected properties of exactness of Gersten complex and $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariance hold. Moreover R5 is vacuously satisfied when the base is a perfect field and it is also satisfied by $K^{MW}$ over any base. For an arbitrary valued field $(K,v)$ and a given extension $v(K^*)\hookrightarrow\Lambda$ of ordered groups, we analyze the structure of the tree formed by all $\Lambda$-valued extensions of $v$ to the polynomial ring $K[x]$. As an application, we find a model for the tree of all equivalence classes of valuations on $K[x]$ (without fixing their value group), whose restriction to $K$ is equivalent to $v$. In the henselian case, we apply these results to show that there is a complete parallelism between the arithmetic properties of irreducible polynomials $F\in K[x]$, encoded by their Okutsu frames, and the valuation-theoretic properties of their induced valuations $v_F$ on $K[x]$, encoded by their MacLane-Vaqui\'e chains. International audience; We address the description of the tropicalization of families of rational varieties under parametrizations with prescribed support, via curve valuations. We recover and extend results by Sturmfels, Tevelev and Yu for generic coefficients, considering rational parametrizations with non-trivial denominator. The advantage of our point of view is that it can be generalized to deal with non-generic parametrizations. We provide a detailed analysis of the degree of the closed image, based on combinatorial conditions on the relative positions of the supports of the polynomials defining the parametrization. We obtain a new formula and finer bounds on the degree, when the supports of the polynomials are different. We also present a new formula and bounds for the order at the origin in case the closed image is a hypersurface.

We complete Satake's classification of Kuga fiber varieties by showing that if a representation $\rho$ of a hermitian algebraic group satisfies Satake's necessary conditions, then some multiple of $\rho$ defines a Kuga fiber variety.

We give an algebraic proof valid in arbitrary characteristic for the known equivalence between (strongly) slope semistable vector bundles with vanishing discriminant and vanishing determinant and numerically flat bundles. We introduce an etale fundamental group with modulus and construct a reciprocity homomorphism from the Kato-Saito idele class group with modulus to this fundamental group. This is the K-theoretic analogue of the reciprocity for the cycle-theoretic idele class group with modulus due to Kerz-Saito, and plays a central role in showing the isomorphism between the two idele class groups. We give a topological explanation of the main results of V.Shchigolev, Categories of Bott-Samelson Varieties, Algebras and Representation Theory, 23 (2), 349-391, 2020. To this end, we consider some subspaces of Bott-Samelson varieties invariant under the action of the maximal compact torus $K$ and study their topological and homological properties. Moreover, we describe multiplicative generators of the equivariant cohomologies of Bott-Samelson varieties.

A classical result of F.Klein states that, given a finite primitive group $G\subseteq SL_2(\mathbb{C})$, there exists a hypergeometric equation such that any second order LODE whose differential Galois group is isomorphic to $G$ is projectively equivalent to the pullback by a rational map of this hypergeometric equation. In this paper, we generalize this result. We show that, given a finite primitive group $G\subseteq SL_n(\mathbb{C})$, there exist a positive integer $d=d(G)$ and a standard equation such that any LODE whose differential Galois group is isomorphic to $G$ is gauge equivalent, over a field extension $F$ of degree $d$, to an equation projectively equivalent to the pullback by a map in $F$ of this standard equation. For $n=3$, these standard equations can be chosen to be hypergeometric.

We study the Lüroth problem for partial differential fields. The main result is the following partial differential analog of generalized Lüroth's theorem: Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a differential field of characteristic 0 with $m$ derivation operators, $\textbf{u}=u_1,\ldots,u_n$ a set of differential indeterminates over $\mathcal{F}$. We prove that an intermediate differential field $\mathcal{G}$ between $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{F}\langle \textbf{u}\rangle$ is a simple differential extension of $\mathcal{F}$ if and only if the differential dimension polynomial of $\textbf{u}$ over $\mathcal{G}$ is of the form $ω_{\textbf{u}/\mathcal{G}}(t)=n{t+m\choose m}-{t+m-s\choose m}$ for some $s\in\mathbb N$. This result generalizes the classical differential Lüroth's theorem proved by Ritt and Kolchin in the case $m=n=1$. We then present an algorithm to decide whether a given finitely generated differential extension field of $\mathcal{F}$ contained in $\mathcal{F}\langle \textbf{u}\rangle$ is a simple extension, and in the affirmative case, to compute a Lüroth generator. Suppose $X$ is a smooth projective geometrically irreducible curve over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. Let $G$ be a finite group acting faithfully on $X$ over $k$ such that $G$ has non-trivial, cyclic Sylow $p$-subgroups. If $E$ is a $G$-invariant Weil divisor on $X$ with $\mathrm{deg}(E)> 2g(X)-2$, we prove that the decomposition of $\mathrm{H}^0(X,\mathcal{O}_X(E))$ into a direct sum of indecomposable $kG$-modules is uniquely determined by the class of $E$ modulo $G$-invariant principal divisors, together with the ramification data of the cover $X\to X/G$. The latter is given by the lower ramification groups and the fundamental characters of the closed points of $X$ that are ramified in the cover. As a consequence, we obtain that if $m>1$ and $g(X)\ge 2$, then the $kG$-module structure of $\mathrm{H}^0(X,Ω_X^{\otimes m})$ is uniquely determined by the class of a canonical divisor on $X/G$ modulo principal divisors, together with the ramification data of $X\to X/G$. This extends to arbitrary $m > 1$ the $m = 1$ case treated by the first author with T. Chinburg and A. Kontogeorgis. We discuss applications to the tangent space of the global deformation functor associated to $(X,G)$ and to congruences between prime level cusp forms in characteristic $0$. In particular, we complete the description of the precise $k\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{F}_\ell)$-module structure of all prime level $\ell$ cusp forms of even weight in characteristic $p=3$., 35 pages. We study parameter spaces of linear series on projective curves in the presence of unibranch singularities, i.e. {\it cusps}; and to do so, we stratify cusps according to value semigroup. We show that {\it generalized Severi varieties} of maps $\mathbb{P}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$ with images of fixed degree and arithmetic genus are often {\it reducible} whenever $n \geq 3$. We also prove that the Severi variety of degree-$d$ maps with a hyperelliptic cusp of delta-invariant $g \ll d$ is of codimension at least $(n-1)g$ inside the space of degree-$d$ holomorphic maps $\mathbb{P}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$; and that for small $g$, the bound is exact, and the corresponding space of maps is the disjoint union of unirational strata. Wall-crossing phenomena are ubiquitous in many problems of algebraic geometry and theoretical physics. Various ways to encode the relevant information and the need to track the changes under the variation of parameters lead to rather complicated transformation rules and non-trivial combinatorial problems. In this paper we propose a framework, reminiscent of collections and plethysms in the theory of operads, that conceptualizes those transformation rules. As an application we obtain new streamlined proofs of some existing wall-crossing formulas as well as some new formulas related to attractor invariants., 28 pages

The first goal of the present paper is to study the class groups of the edge rings of complete multipartite graphs, denoted by $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$, where $1 \leq r_1 \leq \cdots \leq r_n$. More concretely, we prove that the class group of $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^n$ if $n =3$ with $r_1 \geq 2$ or $n \geq 4$, while it turns out that the excluded cases can be deduced into Hibi rings. The second goal is to investigate the special class of divisorial ideals of $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$, called conic divisorial ideals. We describe conic divisorial ideals for certain $K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}$ including all cases where $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ is Gorenstein. Finally, we give a non-commutative crepant resolution (NCCR) of $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ in the case where it is Gorenstein., 21 pages

Finite generation of the symbolic Rees ring of a space monomial prime ideal of a 3-dimensional weighted polynomial ring is a very interesting problem. Negative curves play important roles in finite generation of these rings. We are interested in the structure of the negative curve. We shall prove that negative curves are rational in many cases. We also see that the Cox ring of the blow-up of a toric variety at the point (1,1,...,1) coincides with the extended symbolic Rees ring of an ideal of a polynomial ring. For example, Roberts' second counterexample to Cowsik's question (and Hilbert's 14th problem) coincides with the Cox ring of some normal projective variety., Comment: 24 pages

Let $S$ be an unramified regular local ring of mixed characteristic two and $R$ the integral closure of $S$ in a biquadratic extension of its quotient field obtained by adjoining roots of sufficiently general square free elements $f,g\in S$. Let $S^2$ denote the subring of $S$ obtained by lifting to $S$ the image of the Frobenius map on $S/2S$. When at least one of $f,g\in S^2$, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulayness of $R$ and show that $R$ admits a birational small Cohen-Macaulay module. We prove that any multi-variate Hasse–Schmidt derivation can be decomposed in terms of substitution maps and uni-variate Hasse–Schmidt derivations. As a consequence we prove that the bracket of two m-integrable derivations is also m-integrable, for m a positive integer or infinity.

In this article, we study certain local cohomology modules over $F$-pure rings. We give sufficient conditions for the vanishing of some Lyubeznik numbers, derive a formula for computing these invariants when the $F$-pure ring is standard graded and, by its means, we provide some new examples of Lyubeznik tables. We study associated primes of certain Ext-modules, showing that they are all compatible ideals. Let G be a subgroup of S n , the symmetric group of degree n. For any field k, G acts naturally on the rational function field k ( x 1 , ⋯ , x n ) via k-automorphisms defined by σ ⋅ x i : = x σ ⋅ i for any σ ∈ G and 1 ≤ i ≤ n . In this article, we will show that if G is a solvable transitive subgroup of S 14 and char ( k ) = 7 , then the fixed subfield k ( x 1 , ⋯ , x 14 ) G is rational (i.e., purely transcendental) over k. In proving the above theorem, we rely on the Kuniyoshi–Gaschutz Theorem or some ideas in its proof.

Let C be an irreducible plane curve of PG ( 2 , K ) where K is an algebraically closed field of characteristic p ≥ 0 . A point Q ∈ C is an inner Galois point for C if the projection π Q from Q is Galois. Assume that C has two different inner Galois points Q 1 and Q 2 , both simple. Let G 1 and G 2 be the respective Galois groups. Under the assumption that G i fixes Q i , for i = 1 , 2 , we provide a complete classification of G = 〈 G 1 , G 2 〉 and we exhibit a curve for each such G. Our proof relies on deeper results from group theory.

We introduce the notion of Hitchin variety over $\C$. Let $L$ be a holomorphic line bundle over a Hitchin variety $X$. We investigate the space of all global sections of sheaf of differential operators $\cat{D}^k (L)$ and symmetric powers of sheaf of first order differential operators $\cat{S}^k(\cat{D}^1 (L))$ over $X$ and show that for a projective Hithcin variety both the spaces are one dimensional. As an application, we show that the space $\cat{C}(L)$ of holomorphic connections on $L$ does not admit any non-constant regular function., Comment: 10 pages

More than four decades ago, Eisenbud, Khim\v{s}ia\v{s}vili, and Levine introduced an analogue in the algebro-geometric setting of the notion of local degree from differential topology. Their notion of degree, which we call the EKL-degree, can be thought of as a refinement of the usual notion of local degree in algebraic geometry that works over non-algebraically closed base fields, taking values in the Grothendieck-Witt ring. In this note, we compute the EKL-degree at the origin of certain finite covers $f\colon \mathbb{A}^n\to \mathbb{A}^n$ induced by quotients under actions of Weyl groups. We use knowledge of the cohomology ring of partial flag varieties as a key input in our proofs, and our computations give interesting explicit examples in the field of $\mathbb{A}^1$-enumerative geometry., Comment: 15 pages

Let X be a projective K3 surface over C . We prove that its Cox ring has a generating set whose degrees are either classes of smooth rational curves, sums of at most three elements of the Hilbert basis of the nef cone, or of the form 2 ( f + f ′ ) , where f , f ′ are classes of smooth elliptic curves with f ⋅ f ′ = 2 . This result and techniques using Koszul's type exact sequences are then applied to determine a generating set for the Cox ring of all Mori dream K3 surfaces of Picard number three which is minimal in most cases. A presentation for the Cox ring is given in some special cases with few generators.

Previously, Ohsugi and Hibi gave a combinatorial description of bipartite graphs $G$ whose toric edge ideal $I_G$ is generated by quadrics, showing that every cycle of $G$ of length at least $6$ must have a chord. This corresponds to the Green-Lazarsfeld condition $\mathbf{N}_1$. In this paper, we investigate the higher syzygies of $I_G$ and give combinatorial descriptions of the Green-Lazarsfeld conditions $\mathbf{N}_p$ of toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs for all $p \ge 1$. In particular, we show that $I_G$ is linearly presented (i.e. satisfies condition $\mathbf{N}_2$) if and only if the bipartite complement of $G$ is a tree of diameter at most $3$. We also investigate the regularity of linearly presented toric edge ideals and give criteria for polyomino ideals to satisfy the Green-Lazarsfeld conditions., 20 pages, comments welcome

We give sufficient conditions to ensure that the ideal $\Phi(\mathcal E)$ of $\mathcal E$-phantom maps in a locally $\lambda$-presentable exact category $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{E})$ is (special) (pre)covering ideal, where $\mathcal E$ is an exact substructure of $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{E})$. As a byproduct, we infer the existence of various covering ideals in categories of sheaves which have a meaningful geometrical motivation. In particular we deal with a Zariski-local notion of phantom maps in categories of sheaves. We describe the minimal number of critical points and the minimal number $s$ of singular fibres for a non isotrivial fibration of a surface $S$ over a curve $B$ of genus $1$, constructing a fibration with $s=1$ and irreducible singular fibre with $4$ nodes. Then we consider the associated factorizations in the mapping class group and in the symplectic group. We show basic results on super-manifolds and super Lie groups over a complete field of characteristic $\ne 2$, extensively using Hopf-algebraic techniques. The main results are two theorems. The first main theorem shows a category equivalence between super Lie groups and Harish-Chandra pairs, which is applied especially to construct the Hopf super-algebra of all analytic representative functions on a super Lie group. In the present article, we investigate the following deformation problem. Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be a local (graded local) Noetherian ring with a (homogeneous) regular element $y \in \mathfrak m$ and assume that $R/yR$ is quasi-Gorenstein. Then is $R$ quasi-Gorenstein? We give positive answers to this problem under various assumptions, while we present a counter-example in general. Let C ⊂ P r be a general curve of genus g embedded via a general linear series of degree d. The Maximal Rank Conjecture asserts that the restriction maps H 0 ( O P r ( m ) ) → H 0 ( O C ( m ) ) are of maximal rank; this determines the Hilbert function of C. In this paper, we prove an analogous statement for the union of hyperplane sections of general curves. More specifically, if H ⊂ P r is a general hyperplane, and C 1 , C 2 , … , C n are general curves, we show H 0 ( O H ( m ) ) → H 0 ( O ( C 1 ∪ C 2 ∪ ⋯ ∪ C n ) ∩ H ( m ) ) is of maximal rank, except for some counterexamples when m = 2 . As explained in [5] , this result plays a key role in the author's proof of the Maximal Rank Conjecture [7] .

In this article, we study the weak and strong Lefschetz properties, and the related notion of almost revlex ideal, in the non-Artinian case, proving that several results known in the Artinian case hold also in this more general setting. I derive explicitly all polynomial relations in the character ring of $E_8$ of the form $\chi_{\wedge^k \mathfrak{e}_8} - \mathfrak{p}_{k} (\chi_{1}, \dots, \chi_{8})=0$, where $\wedge^k \mathfrak{e}_8$ is an arbitrary exterior power of the adjoint representation and $\chi_{i}$ is the $i^{\rm th}$ fundamental character. This has simultaneous implications for the theory of relativistic integrable systems, Seiberg-Witten theory, quantum topology, orbifold Gromov-Witten theory, and the arithmetic of elliptic curves. Let $k$ be a field of positive characteristic. Building on the work of the second named author, we define a new class of $k$-algebras, called diagonally $F$-regular algebras, for which the so-called Uniform Symbolic Topology Property (USTP) holds effectively. We show that this class contains all essentially smooth $k$-algebras. We also show that this class contains certain singular algebras, such as the affine cone over $\mathbb{P}^r_{k} \times \mathbb{P}^s_{k}$, when $k$ is perfect. By reduction to positive characteristic, it follows that USTP holds effectively for the affine cone over $\mathbb{P}^r_{\mathbb{C}} \times \mathbb{P}^s_{\mathbb{C}}$ and more generally for complex varieties of diagonal $F$-regular type., Comment: 22 pages. We construct families of principally polarized abelian varieties whose theta divisor is irreducible and contains an abelian subvariety. These families are used to construct examples when the Gauss map of the theta divisor is only generically finite and not finite. That is, the Gauss map in these cases has at least one positive-dimensional fiber. We also obtain lower-bounds on the dimension of Andreotti-Mayer loci., Comment: Final version, several typos fixed. We study the moduli space AS g of Artin-Schreier curves of genus g over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic p. The moduli space is partitioned into strata, which are irreducible. Each stratum parameterizes Artin-Schreier curves whose ramification divisors have the same coefficients. We construct deformations of these curves to study the relations between those strata. As an application, when p = 3 , we prove that AS g is connected for all g. When p > 3 , it turns out that AS g is connected for a sufficiently large value of g. In the course of our work, we answer a question of Pries and Zhu about how a combinatorial graph determines the geometry of AS g .

We study when the derived intersection of two smooth subvarieties of a smooth variety is formal. As a consequence we obtain a derived base change theorem for non-transversal intersections. We also obtain applications to the study of the derived fixed locus of a finite group action and argue that for a global quotient orbifold the exponential map is an isomorphism between the Lie algebra of the free loop space and the loop space itself. This allows us to give new proofs of the HKR decomposition of orbifold Hochschild (co)homology into twisted sectors., 23 pages
