We introduce the notion of residual intersections of modules and prove their existence. We show that projective dimension one modules have Cohen-Macaulay residual intersections, namely they satisfy the relevant Artin-Nagata property. We then establish a formula for the core of orientable modules satisfying certain homological conditions, extending previous results of Corso, Polini, and Ulrich on the core of projective one modules. Finally, we provide examples of classes of modules that satisfy our assumptions.

A splinter is a notion of singularity that has seen numerous recent applications, especially in connection with the direct summand theorem, the mixed characteristic minimal model program, Cohen-Macaulayness of absolute integral closures and cohomology vanishing theorems. Nevertheless, many basic questions about these singularities remain elusive. One outstanding problem is whether the splinter property spreads from a point to an open neighborhood of a noetherian scheme. Our paper addresses this problem in prime characteristic, where we show that a locally noetherian scheme that has finite Frobenius or that is locally essentially of finite type over a quasi-excellent local ring has an open splinter locus. In particular, all varieties over fields of positive characteristic have open splinter loci. Intimate connections are established between the openness of splinter loci and $F$-compatible ideals, which are prime characteristic analogues of log canonical centers. We prove the surprising fact that for a large class of noetherian rings with pure (aka universally injective) Frobenius, the splinter condition is detected by the splitting of a single generically \'etale finite extension. Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is greater than the socle degree of $A$, we show that $A$ is almost strong Lefschetz. This quite modest result is nevertheless arguably the most encompassing so far concerning the strong Lefschetz property for graded codimension three AG algebras.

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $I$ be a square-free monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$. The Green-Lazarsfeld index, $\mathrm{index}(I)$, counts the number of steps to reach to a syzygy minimally generated by a nonlinear form in a graded minimal free resolution of $I$. In this paper, we study this invariant for $I$ and its powers from a combinatorial point of view. We characterize all square-free monomial ideals $I$ generated in degree $3$ such that $\mathrm{index}(I)>1$. Utilizing this result, we also characterize all square-free monomial ideals generated in degree $3$ such that $\mathrm{index}(I)>1$ and $\mathrm{index}(I^2)=1$. In case $n\leq5$, it is shown that $\mathrm{index}(I^k)>1$ for all $k$ if $I$ is any square-free monomial ideal with $\mathrm{index}(I)>1$., 14 pages, 4 figures

We give degree formulas for Grothendieck polynomials indexed by vexillary permutations and $1432$-avoiding permutations via tableau combinatorics. These formulas generalize a formula for degrees of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials which appeared in previous joint work of the authors with Y. Ren and A. St. Dizier. We apply our formulas to compute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of classes of generalized determinantal ideals. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the regularities of all one-sided mixed ladder determinantal ideals. We also derive formulas for the regularities of certain Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, including those coming from open patches of Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. Over a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring admitting a canonical module the definable closure of the class of balanced big Cohen-Macaulay modules is $d$-cotilting and is the smallest such class containing the maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. In this article we study a theory of support varieties over a skew complete intersection $R$, i.e. a skew polynomial ring modulo an ideal generated by a sequence of regular normal elements. We compute the derived braided Hochschild cohomology of $R$ relative to the skew polynomial ring and show its action on $\mathrm{Ext}_R(M,N)$ is noetherian for finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ and $N$ respecting the braiding of $R$. When the parameters defining the skew polynomial ring are roots of unity we use this action to define a support theory. In this setting applications include a proof of the Generalized Auslander-Reiten Conjecture and that $R$ possesses symmetric complexity.

The first goal of the present paper is to study the class groups of the edge rings of complete multipartite graphs, denoted by $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$, where $1 \leq r_1 \leq \cdots \leq r_n$. More concretely, we prove that the class group of $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^n$ if $n =3$ with $r_1 \geq 2$ or $n \geq 4$, while it turns out that the excluded cases can be deduced into Hibi rings. The second goal is to investigate the special class of divisorial ideals of $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$, called conic divisorial ideals. We describe conic divisorial ideals for certain $K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}$ including all cases where $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ is Gorenstein. We study how Betti numbers of ideals in a local ring change under small perturbations. Given $p\in\mathbb N$ and given an ideal $I$ of a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak m)$, our main result states that there exists $N>0$ such that if $J$ is an ideal with $I\equiv J\bmod \mathfrak m^N$ and with the same Hilbert function as $I$, then the Betti numbers $\beta_i^R(R/I)$ and $\beta_i^R(R/J)$ coincide for $0\le i\le p$. Moreover, we present several cases in which an ideal $J$ such that $I \equiv J \bmod \mathfrak m^N$ is forced to have the same Hilbert function as $I$, and therefore the same Betti numbers., Comment: 13 pages

Let D be a domain and let S be a torsion-free monoid such that D has characteristic 0 or the quotient group of S satisfies the ascending chain condition on cyclic subgroups. We give a characterization of when the monoid algebra D [ S ] is weakly Krull. As corollaries, we reobtain the results on when D [ S ] is Krull resp. weakly factorial, due to Chouinard resp. Chang. Furthermore, we deduce a characterization of generalized Krull monoid algebras analogous to our main result and we characterize the weakly Krull domains among the affine monoid algebras.

Finite generation of the symbolic Rees ring of a space monomial prime ideal of a 3-dimensional weighted polynomial ring is a very interesting problem. Negative curves play important roles in finite generation of these rings. We are interested in the structure of the negative curve. We shall prove that negative curves are rational in many cases. We also see that the Cox ring of the blow-up of a toric variety at the point (1,1,...,1) coincides with the extended symbolic Rees ring of an ideal of a polynomial ring. For example, Roberts' second counterexample to Cowsik's question (and Hilbert's 14th problem) coincides with the Cox ring of some normal projective variety., Comment: 24 pages

In this paper, we consider a finite, torsion-free module $E$ over a Gorenstein local ring. We provide sufficient conditions for $E$ to be of linear type and for the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(E)$ of $E$ to be Cohen-Macaulay. Our results are obtained by constructing a generic Bourbaki $I$ ideal of $E$ and exploiting properties of the residual intersections of $I$., Comment: 20 pages. If $k$ is a field and $R$ is a commutative $k$-algebra, we explore the question of when the ring $D_{R|k}$ of $k$-linear differential operators on $R$ is isomorphic to its opposite ring. Under mild hypotheses, we prove this is the case whenever $R$ Gorenstein local or when $R$ is a ring of invariants. As a key step in the proof we show that in many cases of interest canonical modules admit right $D$-module structures. Let A be a commutative augmented ring and I be its augmentation ideal. This paper shows that the sequence { I n / I n + 1 } becomes stationary up to isomorphism. The result yields stability in the associated graded ring of A along I.

Given a monomial $m$ in a polynomial ring and a subset $L$ of the variables of the polynomial ring, the principal $L$-Borel ideal generated by $m$ is the ideal generated by all monomials which can be obtained from $m$ by successively replacing variables of $m$ by those which are in $L$ and have smaller index. Given a collection $\mathcal{I}=\{I_1,\ldots,I_r\}$ where $I_i$ is $L_i$-Borel for $i=1,\ldots,r$ (where the subsets $L_1,\ldots,L_r$ may be different for each ideal), we prove in essence that if the bipartite incidence graph among the subsets $L_1,\ldots,L_r$ is chordal bipartite, then the defining equations of the multi-Rees algebra of $\mathcal{I}$ has a Gr\"obner basis of quadrics with squarefree lead terms under lexicographic order. Thus the multi-Rees algebra of such a collection of ideals is Koszul, Cohen-Macaulay, and normal. This significantly generalizes a theorem of Ohsugi and Hibi on Koszul bipartite graphs. As a corollary we obtain that the multi-Rees algebra of a collection of principal Borel ideals is Koszul. To prove our main result we use a fiber-wise Gr\"obner basis criterion for the kernel of a toric map and we introduce a modification of Sturmfels' sorting algorithm., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures

Let $S$ be an unramified regular local ring of mixed characteristic two and $R$ the integral closure of $S$ in a biquadratic extension of its quotient field obtained by adjoining roots of sufficiently general square free elements $f,g\in S$. Let $S^2$ denote the subring of $S$ obtained by lifting to $S$ the image of the Frobenius map on $S/2S$. When at least one of $f,g\in S^2$, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulayness of $R$ and show that $R$ admits a birational small Cohen-Macaulay module. Let $R$ be a standard graded commutative algebra over a field $k$, let $K$ be its Koszul complex viewed as a differential graded $k$-algebra, and let $H$ be the homology algebra of $K$. This paper studies the interplay between homological properties of the three algebras $R$, $K$, and $H$. In particular, we introduce two definitions of Koszulness that extend the familiar property originally introduced by Priddy: one which applies to $K$ (and, more generally, to any connected differential graded $k$-algebra) and the other, called strand-Koszulness, which applies to $H$. The main theoretical result is a complete description of how these Koszul properties of $R$, $K$, and $H$ are related to each other. This result shows that strand-Koszulness of $H$ is stronger than Koszulness of $R$, and we include examples of classes of algebras which have Koszul homology algebras that are strand-Koszul., Comment: Typos corrected. Let $G$ be a graph on $[n]$ and $J_G$ be the binomial edge ideal of $G$ in the polynomial ring $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n,y_1,\ldots,y_n]$. In this paper we investigate some topological properties of a poset associated to the minimal primary decomposition of $J_G$. We show that this poset admits some specific subposets which are contractible. This in turn, provides some interesting algebraic consequences. In this article, we study certain local cohomology modules over $F$-pure rings. We give sufficient conditions for the vanishing of some Lyubeznik numbers, derive a formula for computing these invariants when the $F$-pure ring is standard graded and, by its means, we provide some new examples of Lyubeznik tables. We study associated primes of certain Ext-modules, showing that they are all compatible ideals. The Sally module of an ideal is an important tool to interplay between Hilbert coefficients and the properties of the associated graded ring. In this paper we give new insights on the structure of the Sally module. Let S be a deeply embedded, equicharacteristic, Artinian Gorenstein local ring. We prove that if R is a non-Gorenstein quotient of S of small colength, then every totally reflexive R-module is free. Indeed, the second syzygy of the canonical module of R has a direct summand T which is a test module for freeness over R in the sense that if Tor + R ( T , N ) = 0 , for some finitely generated R-module N, then N is free.

Given the Hilbert function $u$ of a closed subscheme of a projective space over an infinite field $K$, let $m_u$ and $M_u$ be, respectively, the minimum and the maximum among all the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities of schemes with Hilbert function $u$. I show that, for every integer $m$ such that $m_u \leq m \leq M_u$, there exists a scheme with Hilbert function $u$ and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $m$. As a consequence, the analogous algebraic result for an O-sequence $f$ and homogeneous polynomial ideals over $K$ with Hilbert function $f$ holds too. Although this result does not need any explicit computation, I also describe how to compute a scheme with the above requested properties. Previously, Ohsugi and Hibi gave a combinatorial description of bipartite graphs $G$ whose toric edge ideal $I_G$ is generated by quadrics, showing that every cycle of $G$ of length at least $6$ must have a chord. This corresponds to the Green-Lazarsfeld condition $\mathbf{N}_1$. In this paper, we investigate the higher syzygies of $I_G$ and give combinatorial descriptions of the Green-Lazarsfeld conditions $\mathbf{N}_p$ of toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs for all $p \ge 1$. In particular, we show that $I_G$ is linearly presented (i.e. satisfies condition $\mathbf{N}_2$) if and only if the bipartite complement of $G$ is a tree of diameter at most $3$. In the present article, we investigate the following deformation problem. Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be a local (graded local) Noetherian ring with a (homogeneous) regular element $y \in \mathfrak m$ and assume that $R/yR$ is quasi-Gorenstein. Then is $R$ quasi-Gorenstein? We give positive answers to this problem under various assumptions, while we present a counter-example in general. We study the combinatorics of Gr\"obner degenerations of Grassmannians and the Schubert varieties inside them. We provide a family of binomial ideals whose combinatorics is governed by tableaux induced by matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels and Zelevinsky. We prove that these ideals are all quadratically generated and they yield a SAGBI basis of the Pl\"ucker algebra. This leads to a new family of toric degenerations of Grassmannians. Moreover, we apply our results to construct a family of Gr\"obner degenerations of Schubert varieties inside Grassmannians. We provide a complete characterization of toric ideals among these degenerations in terms of the combinatorics of matching fields, permutations, and semi-standard tableaux.

We introduce a new class of monomial ideals which we call symmetric shifted ideals. Symmetric shifted ideals are fixed by the natural action of the symmetric group and, within the class of monomial ideals fixed by this action, they can be considered as an analogue of stable monomial ideals within the class of monomial ideals. We show that a symmetric shifted ideal has linear quotients and compute its (equivariant) graded Betti numbers. As an application of this result, we obtain several consequences for graded Betti numbers of symbolic powers of defining ideals of star configurations., Comment: Corrected typo in Example 5.8

For an arbitrary ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $R$ we define the notion of initially regular sequences on $R/I$. These sequences share properties with regular sequences. In particular, the length of an initially regular sequence provides a lower bound for the depth of $R/I$. Using combinatorial information from the initial ideal of $I$ we construct sequences of linear polynomials that form initially regular sequences on $R/I$. We identify situations where initially regular sequences are also regular sequences, and we show that our results can be combined with polarization to improve known depth bounds for general monomial ideals., Comment: Major revision of Section 4. Let $\kk$ be a field, $R$ a standard graded quadratic $\kk$-algebra with $\dim_{\kk}R_2\le 3$, and let $\ov\kk$ denote an algebraic closure of $\kk$. We construct a graded surjective Golod homomorphism $\varphi \colon P\to R\otimes_{\kk}\ov{\kk}$ such that $P$ is a complete intersection of codimension at most $3$. In this article we establish equivariant isomorphisms of Ext and Tor modules over different relative complete intersections. More precisely, for a commutative ring $Q$, this paper investigates how $Ext_{Q/(\boldsymbol{f})}^*(M,N)$ and $Tor^{Q/(\boldsymbol{f})}_*(M,N)$ change when one varies $\boldsymbol{f}$ among all Koszul-regular sequences of a fixed length such that $\boldsymbol{f} M=0$ and $\boldsymbol{f} N=0$. Let ( R , m , κ ) be a local ring. We give a characterization of R-modules M whose local cohomology is finite length up to some index in terms of asymptotic vanishing of Koszul cohomology on parameter ideals up to the same index. In particular, we show that a quasi-unmixed module M is asymptotically Cohen-Macaulay if and only if M is Cohen-Macaulay on the punctured spectrum if and only if sup ⁡ { l ( H i ( f 1 , … , f d ; M ) ) | f 1 , … , f d = m , i d } ∞ for d = dim ⁡ ( M ) = dim ⁡ ( R ) .

We construct explicitly a resolution of a fan algebra of principal ideals over a Noetherian ring for the case when the fan is a proper rational cone in the plane. Using discrete Morse theory, we give an algorithm that prunes the excess of information in the Taylor resolution and constructs a new cellular free resolution for an arbitrary monomial ideal. The pruned resolution is not simplicial in general, but we can slightly modify our algorithm in order to obtain a simplicial resolution. We also show that the Lyubeznik resolution fits into our pruning strategy. We finally use our methods to give a different approach to the theory of splitting of monomial ideals., 16 pages. A recent continuous family of multiplicity functions on local rings was introduced by Taylor interpolating between Hilbert-Samuel and Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities. The obvious goal is to use this as a tool for deforming results from one to the other. The values in this family which do not match these classic variants however are not known yet to be well-behaved. This article explores lower bounds for these intermediate multiplicities as well as gives evidence for analogies of the Watanabe-Yoshida minimality conjectures for unmixed singular rings., Comment: 10 pages

In 2012, Ananthnarayan, Avramov and Moore give a new construction of Gorenstein rings from two Gorenstein local rings, called their connected sum. Given a Gorenstein ring, one would like to know whether it decomposes as a connected sum and if so, what are its components. We answer these questions in the Artinian case and investigate conditions on the ring which force it to be indecomposable as a connected sum. We further give a characterization for Gorenstein Artin local rings to be decomposable as connected sums, and as a consequence, obtain results about its Poincare series and minimal number of generators of its defining ideal. Generalizing a result of Masuti and the second author, we describe inverse limits of Macaulay's inverse systems for Cohen-Macaulay factor algebras of formal power series or polynomial rings over an infinite field. On the way we find a strictness result for filtrations defined by regular sequences. It generalizes both a lemma of Uli Walther and the Rees isomorphism., Comment: 17 pages

We establish a criterion for the strong $F$-regularity of a (non-Gorenstein) Cohen-Macaulay reduced complete local ring of dimension at least $2$, containing a perfect field of prime characteristic $p$. We also describe an explicit generating morphism (in the sense of Lyubeznik) for the top local cohomology module with support in certain ideals arising from an $n\times (n-1)$ matrix $X$ of indeterminates. For $p\geq 5$, these results led us to derive a simple, new proof of the well-known fact that the generic determinantal ring defined by the maximal minors of $X$ is strongly $F$-regular., 18 pages

We apply Orlov's equivalence to derive formulas for the Betti numbers of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over the cone an elliptic curve $(E,x)$ embedded into $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$, by the full linear system $|\mathcal{O}(nx)|$, for $n>3$. The answers are given in terms of recursive sequences. These results are applied to give a criterion of (Co-)Koszulity. In the last two sections of the paper we apply our methods to study the cases $n=1,2$. Geometrically these cases correspond to the embedding of an elliptic curve into a weighted projective space. The singularities of the corresponding cones are called minimal elliptic. They were studied by K.Saito, where he introduced the notation $\widetilde{E_8}$ for $n=1$, $\widetilde{E_7}$ for $n=2$ and $\widetilde{E_6}$ for the cone over a smooth cubic, that is, for the case $n=3$. For the singularities $\widetilde{E_7}$ and $\widetilde{E_8}$ we obtain formulas for the Betti numbers and the numerical invariants of MCM modules analogous to the case of a plane cubic., 20 pages, 2 figures

Lower bounds on Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity are known for several types of commutative noetherian local rings, and rings with multiplicities which achieve these lower bounds are said to have minimal multiplicity. The first part of this paper gives characterizations of rings of minimal multiplicity in terms of the Ext-algebra of the ring; in particular, we show that minimal multiplicity can be detected via an Ext-algebra which is Gorenstein or Koszul AS-regular. The second part of this paper characterizes rings of minimal multiplicity via a numerical homological invariant introduced by J. Herzog and S. B. Iyengar called linearity defect. Let $A$ be an associative non-positive differential graded ring. In this paper we make a detailed study of a category $\operatorname{\mathsf{Inj}}(A)$ of left DG-modules over $A$ which generalizes the category of injective modules over a ring. We give many characterizations of this category, generalizing the theory of injective modules, and prove a derived version of the Bass-Papp theorem: the category $\operatorname{\mathsf{Inj}}(A)$ is closed in the derived category $\operatorname{\mathsf{D}}(A)$ under arbitrary direct sums if and only if the ring $\mathrm{H}^0(A)$ is left noetherian and for every $i, 41 pages, final version, to appear in Journal of Algebra

Given a normal toric algebra $R$, we compute a uniform integer $D = D(R) > 0$ such that the symbolic power $P^{(D N)} \subseteq P^N$ for all $N >0$ and all monomial primes $P$. We compute the multiplier $D$ explicitly in terms of the polyhedral cone data defining $R$. In this paper we study the O-sequences of the local (or graded) $K$-algebras of socle degree $4.$ More precisely, we prove that an O-sequence $h=(1, 3, h_2, h_3, h_4)$, where $h_4 \geq 2,$ is the $h$-vector of a local level $K$-algebra if and only if $h_3\leq 3 h_4.$ We also prove that $h=(1, 3, h_2, h_3, 1)$ is the $h$-vector of a local Gorenstein $K$-algebra if and only if $h_3 \leq 3$ and $h_2 \leq \binom{h_3+1}{2}+(3-h_3).$ In each of these cases we give an effective method to construct a local level $K$-algebra with a given $h$-vector. Moreover we refine a result by Elias and Rossi by showing that if $h=(1,h_1, h_2, h_3, 1)$ is an unimodal Gorenstein O-sequence, then $h$ forces the corresponding Gorenstein $K$-algebra to be canonically graded if and only if $h_1=h_3 $ and $h_2=\binom{h_1+1}{2}, $ that is the $h$-vector is maximal., Comment: 13 pages
