Tractor rollover is one of the most hazardous events for the driver. The rollover protective structure (ROPS) was introduced to passively protect the driver. In the specific case of two-post protective structures fitted in front of the driver on narrow-track wheeled agricultural tractors, the ROPS has to avoid non-continuous rolling in the event of a lateral rollover. In order to check non-continuous rolling behavior in narrow-track wheeled agricultural tractors, a mathematical model is included in the preliminary ROPS tests of the standardized testing procedures issued by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). A recent approach in the design of narrow-track tractors is the fitting of rubber tracks. A safety issue consequent to this new arrangement is that the standardized calculation does not cover narrow rubber-tracked tractors because it was originally developed assuming only the behavior of the tire in a lateral rollover. The aim of this study was to extend the field of application of the standardized calculation for non-continuous rolling behavior, allowing rubber-tracked tractors to be fitted with a front ROPS suitable for operation in narrow orchards and vineyards. The effect of track-ground interaction compared to tire-ground interaction was evaluated. The track shape and non-deformed behavior of the rubber track at a state of unstable equilibrium under full load caused the tractor to rotate around the outer edge of the track; therefore, the tipping axes and wheel characteristics in the original mathematical model were revised. The tracked tractor checked with the revised model required a higher ROPS with respect to the equivalent wheeled tractor to obtain non-rolling behavior. Tractor overturn is the leading cause of agricultural fatalities in the U.S. Most of these fatalities can be eliminated using a rollover protective structure (ROPS) and a seatbelt. Unfortunately, not all agricultural tractors designed to support ROPS have ROPS designs. A computer-based ROPS design program (CRDP) was developed and successfully tested to provide quick and simple two-post, rear axle-mounted ROPS designs based on SAE Standard J2194. The program uses the tractor dimensions and mass to calculate the dimensions needed for ROPS components. Excel was used as the framework to provide the input, calculation, and ROPS drawing worksheets. Three ROPS (for Massey Ferguson 265, Long 460, and Allis Chalmers 5040 tractors) were designed and constructed using the CRDP. Static rear, side, and vertical tests were conducted based on SAE J2194 on two of the ROPS. All ROPS performance deflection (RPD) tests were less than the ROPS allowable deflection (RAD), indicating that the ROPS passed the static tests. The third ROPS was successfully mounted on the tractor axle housing within one hour, demonstrating the ease of installation using a bolted corner bracket design. Although the CRDP provided quick and simple ROPS designs, this program does not eliminate the requirement to conduct and pass the performance tests for ROPS designs specified in OSHA and SAE standards., (Copyright© by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.)

The number of fatalities caused by tractor rollovers has decreased in recent years, but the number of fatal tractor rollover accidents with a folded-down rollover protective structure (ROPS) has increased. Operating a ROPS-equipped tractor in low overhead clearance zones is difficult and sometimes impossible. The foldable ROPS (FROPS) was designed to solve the rigid ROPS problem, but lowering and raising a conventional FROPS is a time-consuming and strenuous process. After operators fold down a FROPS to pass a low overhead clearance zone, some prefer to leave it in the folded or inoperative position, increasing the risk of a rollover fatality. The actuation forces for raising and lowering a FROPS are not well known and may be influenced by actuation speed. A completely randomized block design with two blocks, five levels of speed, and multiple replications was conducted to investigate the effect of speed on actuation torque. The blocks were two sizes of tractor FROPS. The test included five levels of speed, including two levels of static measurement and three levels of dynamic measurement. A variable-speed motor system was used to control the speed for raising and lowering the FROPS. The actuation torque is a function of the FROPS upper part shape, dimensions, material density, turning acceleration, and friction. A theoretical model was developed to predict the actuation torque based on the FROPS shape, dimensions, and material density. For one ROPS, due to friction, the dynamic actuation torque was greater for raising and less for lowering than the theoretical torque. Indicator variable regression was used to analyze the effect of speed on actuation torque. Results showed that speed had a significant (p > 0.05) effect on actuation torque. Although there were statistically significant differences between the dynamic actuation torques, these differences were relatively small and negligible compared to the differences between the static torques., (Copyright© by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.)

The high number of accidents due to rollovers of agricultural machines has increased the interest of researchers and organizations for standardization in this field. In the 1960s, standards to test rollover protective structures (ROPS) for tractors were designed and approved. Similar standards were introduced in the 1990s for earth-moving machinery, but ROPS standards were not defined for self-propelled agricultural machines. In the present work, the driver's protective structures of five different categories of self-propelled agricultural machines were analyzed with the goal of introducing ROPS with a strength level in accordance with the standards used for tractors while maintaining the same shape as the existing structure. The results show a low resistance level of the present structures on the machines selected for the tests. New structures that are able to sustain the loads specified by the tractor standard are not different in design from the existing structures, but an increase of the resistance of the materials or an increase of the thickness of the mountings is necessary.

Despite a general consensus among farmers, manufacturers, and researchers that wheeled agricultural tractor design has changed over time, there is little published evidence. There is debate as to whether the standardized rollover protective structure (ROPS) energy and force requirements, based on a tractor reference mass and pertaining to studies conducted more than 40 years ago, are appropriate for modern tractors. This article investigated the physical parameters of 326 modern narrow-track tractors, measured according to OECD Code 6 over 16 years (1993 to 2008 inclusive): 252 (-77%) were fixed-chassis tractors and 74 (-23%) were articulated. To understand the significance of design changes, the data were analyzed with respect to time and as a function of tractor mass. Articulated and fixed-chassis data were treated separately. The time data allowed qualitative analysis, while the mass data allowed quantitative analysis. The parameters show some changes over time and clearly indicate differences between articulated and fixed-chassis types. The parameter changes, along with the differences between types, may have important safety ramifications for ROPS energy absorption requirements, and these aspects are discussed. Regression lines with R2 values were fitted to the mass-related data for fixed-chassis and articulated tractors to determine the suitability of fit. The mass relations also displayed differences between fixed-chassis and articulated tractors. Thus, the most significant recommendation from this study is that the standardized testing procedure for narrow-track wheeled agricultural tractor category should be split into two groups: fixed-chassis and articulated.

Many used tractors that are imported from Japan are adding to the current national inventory in the U.S. and Canada of farm tractors that lack a rollover protective structure (ROPS). Gray-market tractors are built for use by the manufacturer for a certain country but are imported against the manufacture's wishes to a second country for use there, usually as a used tractor. Gray-market tractors may lack ROPS and seatbelts, depending on the date of manufacturer. The objective of this investigation is to describe the gray market for tractors imported from Japan into the U.S. and the policy implications regarding the hazards associated with these imports. Operator manuals and warning labels are typically not written in English. Foreign manufacturers that market tractors in the U.S. have established a variety of disincentives for the importation of gray-market tractors, including issuing warnings, not servicing or providing parts for these tractors, and banning their importation through actions by the U.S. International Trade Commission. Nonetheless, a U.S. market has developed that imports and provides services and parts for gray-market tractors, and some companies provide certified ROPS on the tractors that they sell. A product safety perspective and related policies are presented as an approach to ensuring that these imports are equipped with ROPS and seatbelts.

Agriculture remains one of the most hazardous occupations in the U.S. By conservative estimates, tractor overturns alone claim 120 lives annually. A rollover protective structure (ROPS) and a seatbelt are a highly effective engineering safety control that can prevent many of these fatalities and reduce the severity of injuries associated with tractor overturn. SAE J2194 is a consensus performance standard established for agricultural ROPS. According to this standard, satisfactory ROPS performance can be demonstrated through static testing, field upset testing, or impact testing. A previous modeling study suggested that static testing may underpredict the strain induced in a ROPS during afield upset. In the current study, field upset testing and laboratory static testing results were compared. Field upset testing included six rear and six side upset tests performed according to SAE J2194 guidelines. Additionally, static testing was performed on a ROPS of the same model. The results support findings from the modeling study. Near the lowest sections of the ROPS, the plastic strain resulting from rear upset testing exceeded the plastic strain from static testing for 18 of 24 data points. Conversely, the ROPS plastic strain from side upset testing was typically less than plastic strain from laboratory static testing. However, data indicate that the side upset test may not be very repeatable. This study suggests that the longitudinal loading energy criterion for static testing might not be a conservative predictor of rear upset ROPS response.

The goal of this research was to numerically predict the maximum lateral force acting on a mower rollover protective structure (ROPS) and the energy absorbed by the ROPS during a lateral continuous roll. A finite element (FE) model of the ROPS was developed using elastic and plastic theories including nonlinear relationships between stresses and strains in the plastic deformation range. Model validation was performed using field measurements of ROPS behavior in a lateral continuous roll on a purpose-designed test slope. Field tests determined the maximum deformation of the ROPS of a 900 kg John Deere F925 mower with a 183 cm (72 in.) mowing deck during an actual lateral roll on a pad and on soil. In the FE model, lateral force was gradually added to the ROPS until the field-measured maximum deformation was achieved. The results from the FE analysis indicated that the top corners of the ROPS enter slightly into the plastic deformation region. Maximum lateral forces acting on the ROPS during the simulated impact with the pad and soil were 19650 N and 22850 N, respectively. The FE model predicted that the energy absorbed by the ROPS (643 J) in the lateral roll test on the pad was less than the static test requirements (1575 J) of Organization for Economic Development (OECD) Code 6. In addition, the energy absorbed by the ROPS (1813 J) in the test on the soil met the static test requirements (1575 J). Both the FE model and the field test results indicated that the deformed ROPS of the F925 mower with deck did not intrude into the occupant clearance zone during the lateral continuous or non-continuous roll.

High-speed chains or rotating disks are commonly used to cut and process trees during forest harvesting operations. Mechanical failure or fatigue of these tools can lead to a potentially hazardous situation where fragments of chain or sawteeth are thrown through the operator enclosures on forest machines. Therefore, a test device is needed to evaluate the ability of a forest machine cab to resist puncture by thrown objects. This articles details the development of a high-pressure pneumatic launch system that propels sawteeth and chain fragments at velocities in excess of 150 m/s. This article also discusses the performance of the device following the first series of projectile launches.

This article introduces a conceptual safety alert system using ultrasonic sensors. The safety alert system was designed to detect moving objects in the vicinity of agricultural machinery. This system uses two ultrasonic sensors to detect the distances between the sensors and the moving object and a position detection algorithm to determine the moving object's position relative to the machinery. A stationary test bench was built to prove the concept of the safety sensing system. Validation tests in an outdoor environment indicated that the conceptual safety alert system was capable of detecting the position of a moving object in the vicinity of agricultural machinery in real time, and generating a timely warning signal to raise the attention of the operator for ensuring safe operations. This result proved that the conceptual system has tremendous potential for agricultural machinery applications.

The mechanism for an automatically deployable ROPS (AutoROPS) has been designed and tested. This mechanism is part of an innovative project to provide passive protection against rollover fatality to operators of new tractors used in both low-clearance and unrestricted-clearance tasks. The device is a spring-action, telescoping structure that releases on signal to pyrotechnic squibs that actuate release pins. Upper post motion begins when the release pins clear an internal piston. The structure extends until the piston impacts an elastomeric ring and latches at the top position. In lab tests the two-post structure consistently deployed in less than 0.3 s and latched securely. Static load tests of the telescoping structure and field upset tests of the fully functional AutoROPS have been successfully completed.

The automatically deployable ROPS was developed as part of an innovative project to provide passive protection against overturn fatality to operators of new tractors used in both low-clearance and unrestricted-clearance tasks. The primary objective of this phase of the research was to build a telescoping structure that would prove that a ROPS can be built that will (1) reliably deploy on signal, (2) rise in a sufficiently short amount of time, (3) firmly latch in its deployed position, and (4) satisfy SAE J2194 testing requirements. The two-post structure had previously been found to meet deployment time criteria, and design analyses indicated that neither the slip-fit joint nor the latch pins would fail at test loading. Four directions of static loading were applied to the structure to satisfy SAE requirements. For the series of static loading tests, the raised structure was found to maintain a protective clearance zone after all loads were applied. The structure is overly stiff and should be redesigned to increase its ability to absorb ground-impact energy. Results of dynamic tests and field upset tests are reported in companion articles. The next phase of development is to optimize the structure so that it will plastically deform and absorb energy that would otherwise be transferred to the tractor chassis.

The potential use of electronic safety sensors to protect operators from agricultural equipment with rotating hazards has been identified and discussed as a possible means to prevent traumatic entanglement injury. A multi-sensor human-presence sensing system to protect persons approaching a rotating PTO shaft powering a stationary implement was developed using commercially available, passive infrared and microwave sensors. A control and data acquisition system was designed and constructed to evaluate sensor performance and response. The sensor system performed well during 822 warm weather test passes in which a person approached the potentially hazardous area near the drawbar and PTO/IID located between an IH 986 test tractor and a self-unloading forage wagon. During the 822 test passes, there were no false alarms and no misses. Operators approached the hazard space walking from 92 to 227 cm/second. During tests, the sensing system yielded warning times generally between 0.5 and 1.0 seconds, providing an estimate of the time available to accomplish machine shutdown or operator warnings. Additional cold weather tests caused the control and data acquisition hardware to function erratically. This work suggests that multi-sensor human detection systems have the potential to reduce false alarms through redundancy when more than one sensor is required to detect a person before the system signals a "detect" condition. However, the use of multiple, redundant sensors also increases the potential for a "miss." Further work is needed to determine whether these types of sensor can yield timely enough information to prevent injury via mechanical shutdown or operator warnings.

Even with the technological advances of the last several decades, agricultural production remains one of the most hazardous occupations in the United States. Death due to tractor rollover is a prime contributor to this hazard. Standards for rollover protective structures (ROPS) performance and certification have been developed by groups such as the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) to combat these problems. The current ROPS certification standard, SAE J2194, requires either a dynamic or static testing sequence or both. Although some ROPS manufacturers perform both the dynamic and static phases of SAE J2194 testing, it is possible for a ROPS to be certified for field operation using static testing alone. This research compared ROPS deformation response from a simulated SAE J2194 static loading sequence to ROPS deformation response as a result of a simulated rearward tractor rollover. Finite element analysis techniques for plastic deformation were used to simulate both the static and dynamic rear rollover scenarios. Stress results from the rear rollover model were compared to results from simulated static testing per SAE J2194. Maximum stress values from simulated rear rollovers exceeded maximum stress values recorded during simulated static testing for half of the elements comprising the uprights. In the worst case, the static model underpredicts dynamic model results by approximately 7%. In the best case, the static model overpredicts dynamic model results by approximately 32%. These results suggest the need for additional experimental work to characterize ROPS stress levels during staged overturns and during testing according to the SAE standard.
