Source rock screening analysis was performed on four stratigraphic units from the Muglad basin namely; Abu Gabra, Zarqa, Ghazal, and Baraka formations using pyrolysis and Vitrinite Reflectance (Ro). Results, integrated with the chromatographic and isotopic data from these rocks extracts and a Tertiary oil from El Mahafir-1 wild cat, were used to determine the origin of the oil. A good organic source within the Middle Abu Gabra Formation is observed in wells El Toor-6 and Neem Deep-1 (TOC, 1.0–2.0% & S2 5.0–10.0 mg C/g rock), with mixed kerogens I, II, & III, and thermally mature (% Ro = 0.74–0.94). The Campanian-Early Maastrichtian sequence, i.e. Zarqa and Ghazal formations are generally poor (TOC, <0.5% & S2 <2.5 mg C/g rock), dominated by type III kerogens, and immature at the studied locations. The Baraka shale nevertheless, is good at El Mahafir-1 well (avg. TOC 1.8% & S2 5.0–10.0 mg C/g rock) and fair at Timsah-1 well (Avg. TOC 0.69% & S2 2.5–5.0 mg C/g rock) with a Kerogen that is predominantly Sapropellic at the former, and an exclusively Humic at the later. The formation is mature at Timsah (% Ro = 0.77–1.16) and early mature at El Mahafir-1 (% Ro = 0.64–0.81). Consistent with the pyrolysis, chromatographic data of the rock extracts confirms the mixed source nature of the Abu Gabra Formation which consists of both algal [prominent LMW n-alkanes & elevated C 27 steranes (36–47%)], as well as terrigenous material [higher diasterane/regular sterane ratios (0.50–0.56), abundant rearranged hopanes, & relatively high CPIs (1.22–1.9)], accumulated in an oxic to sub-oxic environment (Pr/Ph, 1.3–3.0). Abu Gabra further shows low C 29 /C 30 hopanes (0.45–0.54), low C 28 steranes (21–26%) with high Gammacerane index (20.3). In contrast, the environment during the Late Cretaceous was strongly reducing (Pr/Ph, 0.37–1.0), associated with a wide organic diversity, both in space and time and is characterized by dominant algal input at some areas and or stratigraphic intervals [Elevated tricyclics, higher C 29 /C 30 hopanes (0.5–1.14), and relatively low Gammacerane indices (4.6–14.4)], while mixed with abundant terrigenous material at others. A direct correlation between El Mahafir oil and the Abu Gabra extracts is thus inferred based on: its mixed organic source nature, oxic to sub-oxic depositional environment (Pr/Ph 1.22), relatively low C 29 /C 30 hopanes (0.54), low C 28 steranes (29%), and a high gammacerane index (20.5). Facies analysis of the Cretaceous Bima Formation in the Gongola Sub –basin of the Northern Benue Trough northeastern Nigeria indicated that the Lower Bima Member is composed of alluvial fan and braided river facies associations. The alluvial fan depositional environment dominantly consists of debris flow facies that commonly occur as matrix supported conglomerate. This facies is locally associated with grain supported conglomerate and mudstone facies, representing sieve channel and mud flow deposits respectively, and these deposits may account for the proximal alluvial fan region of the Lower Bima Member. The distal fan facies were represented by gravel-bed braided river system of probably Scot – type model. This grade into sandy braided river systems with well developed floodplains facies, forming probably at the lowermost portion of the alluvial fan depositional gradient, where it inter-fingers with basinal facies. In the Middle Bima Member, the facies architecture is dominantly suggestive of deep perennial sand-bed braided river system with thickly developed amalgamated trough crossbedded sandstone facies fining to mudstone. Couplets of shallow channels are also locally common, attesting to the varying topography of the basin. The Upper Bima Member is characterized by shallow perennial sand-bed braided river system composed of successive succession of planar and trough crossbedded sandstone facies associations, and shallower channels of the flashy ephemeral sheetflood sand – bed river systems defined by interbedded succession of small scale trough crossbedded sandstone facies and parallel laminated sandstone facies. The overall stacking pattern of the facies succession of the Bima Formation in the Gongola Sub – basin is generally thinning and fining upwards cycles, indicating scarp retreat and deposition in a relatively passive margin setting. Dominance of kaolinite in the clay mineral fraction of the Bima Formation points to predominance of humid sub – tropical to tropical climatic conditions. This favors pedogenic activities which are manifested in the several occurrences of paleosols. Pronounced periods of arid climatic conditions are also notable from the subordinate smectite mineralization. Chlorite mineralization at some localities is indicative of elevation of the provenance area, and this is synonymous with deposition of the Bima Formation, because of its syn – depositional tectonics. The absences of lacustrine shales in the syn – rift stratigraphic architecture of the Bima Formation indicates that the lower Cretaceous petroleum system that are common in the West and Central African Rift basins are generally barren in the Gongola Sub – basin of the Northern Benue Trough. The basal unit of the succession in the Illela borehole belongs to the Dange Formation comprising thick calcareous and variably coloured dark-greyish shale of 36.30 m thick which is overlain by a 31.44 m thick limestone of Kalambaina Formation with 1.7 m thick shaly-limestone inclusive. The uppermost part of the section belongs to the Gwandu Formation which has intercalation of silty-clay, muddy siltstones with well lithified ironstone capping the borehole section. The limestone/carbonate microfacie as deduced from their salient lithologic, sedimentologic and paleontologic features are comparable to standard microfacie (SMF) types 9 and 10, i.e. bioclastic wackestone/bioclastic micrite and packstone-wackestone respectively. Diagenetically, syndepositional and early diagenesis have taken place particularly cementation and replacement in the carbonate rocks and these have greatly affected the reservoir potential negatively. The matrix/grain relationships indicate a shallow marine environment of deposition. The borehole section is delineated into upper foraminifera and lower ostracod biostratigraphic units as no formal biostratigraphic zonation could be attempted due to low diversity of both benthic foraminifera, marine ostracods and the absence of planktonic foraminifera. The similarity of the ostracod assemblages between this study area, Illela borehole, West Africa, North Africa (Libya), Mali and Niger Republic) and South-Western Nigeria (West Africa) suggests that a marine connection exists between the Gulf of Guinea and the Sokoto Basin via the area occupied by the River Niger during the Paleocene. The Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian) Mozduran Formation is the most important gas reservoirs of the northeast Iran. Siliciclastic facies of this formation in eastern most parts of the basin have not been studied yet. Therefore, four stratigraphic sections of Mozduran Formation have been selected in the Kole-Malekabad, Kale-Karab, Deraz-Ab and Karizak to interpret depositional history and analyze depositional sequences. Based on texture and sedimentary structures, 14 slilciclastic lithofacies were identified and classified into four categories, including conglomerate (Gms, Gp, Gt), sandstone (Sh, Sp, St, Sr, Sl, Sm, Se), mud rock (Fl) and intermediate sandstone-mud rock (Sr (Fl), Sr/Fl, Fl (Sr)). Identified lithofacies formed four architectural elements CH, SB, LA and FF. Lithofacies characteristics and architectural elements with mostly bimodal pattern of paleocurrents show that the majority of Mozduran lithofacies deposited in the coastal environment (tidal influence). Sequence stratigraphic analysis shows that the Kole-Malekabad section consists of two depositional sequences while other sections are characterized by three depositional sequences. The lower and upper sequence boundaries of the Mozduran Formation in all stratigraphic sections are SB1 that are distinguished by paleosol and sometime conglomerate horizons. Most of depositional sequences in studied sections are composed only of TST and HST. The TST deposits consist mostly of quartzarenite and litharenite petrofacies that have been deposited in the tidal zone. HST packages are mostly including mud rocks with interdeds of sandstone lithofacies that are deposited in supratidal setting. The LST facies is recognized only in the DS3 (equivalent to the second depositional sequences of the Kole-Malekabad), which consist of conglomerate facies. The following study was undertaken on inorganic geochemical data acquired for 832 core and cuttings samples taken from Cretaceous sediments encountered in 11 wells in the North Central Rub’ al-Khali Basin, Saudi Arabia. The study sections extend from Khafji Member at the base of the Wasia Formation to the basal part of the Aruma Formation. The principal objective of the study was to produce a chemostratigraphic scheme for these wells, though a comparison was also made with a previous lithostratigraphic scheme. Although ICP–OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma–Optical Emission Spectrometry) and ICP–MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometry) were used to acquire data for 50 elements, the chemostratigraphic scheme is based on changes in the following ‘key’ elements and ratios: Ca, Al, Zr, P/Y, Zr/P, Zr/Y, Zr/Nb, Mo and Zr. The scheme comprises a hierarchical order of five zones, 18 subzones and four divisions, with the zones labelled C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5 in ascending stratigraphic order. The definition of these zones are mainly based on changes in Ca and Al reflecting variations in bulk lithology as a response to changes in base level. Zone C1 is dominated by elevated Al and low Ca concentrations and represents calcareous mudrocks deposited in a lagoonal–prodelta environment. An increase in base level led to the formation of highly calcareous rudistic limestones deposited in a shallow marine environment, with a further increase in base level resulting in the deposition of calcareous mudrocks with high Al values in zone C3. Zone C4 comprises rudistic limestones (with elevated Ca and low Al) deposited in shallow marine conditions, while C5 is dominated by calcareous mudrocks and argillaceous limestones deposited in a prodeltaic paleoenvironment. Although the definition of zones mainly relates to changes in base level/bulk lithology, more subtle changes in provenance are modelled using the P/Y, Zr/P, Zr/Y and Zr/Nb ratios which are used to define most subzones and divisions. Variations in this ratio are almost entirely dependent on changes in source/provenance. Although all of the zones and most of the subzones are correlative between the study wells it is noted that different criteria are used to define the zone C2 and C4 subzones in the eastern and western wells of the study area. This suggests that separate sediment sources were responsible for the delivery of clastic material to these carbonate ‘reefs’ during the deposition of these subzones. One important conclusion from this study is that there are close links between the chemostratigraphic and lithostratigraphic correlations but the former offers a much higher level of resolution. The Cretaceous coals of Lamja Formation located in Yola Sub-basin of the Northern Benue Trough, northeastern Nigeria, were analyzed based on a combined investigation of organic and inorganic geochemistry to define the paleodepositional environment condition, organic matter source inputs and their relation to paleoclimate and tectonic setting. The total organic carbon and sulfur contents of Lamja Formation coals ranges from 48.2%–67.8% wt.% and 0.42%–0.76% wt.%, respectively, pointing their deposition in freshwater environment with inferred marine influence during burial. Biomarkers and chemical compositions provide evidence for a major contribution of land-derived organic matter, with minor aquatic organic matter input. Minerals such as quartz, pyrite, kaolinite, illite, montmorillonite and calcite were present in the coals, suggesting that these minerals were sourced from terrigenous origin with slightly marine influence, considered as post-depositional. This is consistent with a significant amount of the oxides of major elements such as SiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , CaO, and MgO. The investigated biomarkers are characterized by dominant odd carbon numbered n -alkanes ( n -C 23 to n -C 33 ), moderately high Pr/Ph ratios (1.72–3.75), very high Tm/Ts ratios (18–29), and high concentrations of regular sterane C 29 , indicating oxic to relatively suboxic conditions, delta plain marine environment of deposition with prevalent contribution of land plants and minor aquatic organic matter input. Concentrations of trace elements such as Ba, Sr, Cr, Ni, V, Co and their standard ratios also suggested that the organic matter was deposited under oxic to relatively suboxic conditions, which is in parts deposited under marine influenced. Some standard binary plots of SiO 2 versus (Al 2 O 3 + K 2 O + Na 2 O) indicate a semi-arid paleoclimatic condition whereas log SiO 2 versus (K 2 O/Na 2 O) also revealed passive continental margin setting. Abstract: The stratigraphy, sedimentology and syn-depositional tectonic events (SdTEs) of the Upper Cretaceous/Paleogene (K–P) succession at four localities in north Eastern Desert (NED) of Egypt have been studied. These localities are distributed from south-southwest to north-northeast at Gebel Millaha, at North Wadi Qena, at Wadi El Dakhal, and at Saint Paul Monastery. Lithostratigraphically, four rock units have been recorded: Sudr Formation (Campanian–Maastrichtian); Dakhla Formation (Danian–Selandian); Tarawan Formation (Selandian–Thanetian) and Esna Formation (Thanetian–Ypresian). These rock units are not completely represented all over the study area because some of them are absent at certain sites and others have variable thicknesses. Biostratigrapgically, 18 planktonic foraminiferal zones have been recorded. These are in stratigraphic order: Globotruncana ventricosa Zone (Campanian); Gansserina gansseri, Contusotruncana contusa, Recimguembelina fructicosa, Pseudohastigerina hariaensis, Pseudohastigerina palpebra and Plummerita hantkenenoides zones (Maastrichtian); Praemurica incostans, Praemurica uncinata, Morozovella angulata and Praemurica carinata/Igorina albeari zones (Danian); Igorina albeari, Globanomanlina pseudomenradii/Parasubbotina variospira, Acarinina subsphaerica, Acarinina soldadoensis/Globanomanlina pseudomenardii and Morozovella velascoensis zones (Selandian/Thantian); and Acarinina sibaiyaensis, Pseudohastigerina wilcoxensis/Morozovella velascoensis zones (earliest Ypresian). Sedimentologically, four sedimentary facies belts forming southwest gently-dipping slope to basin transect have been detected. They include tidal flats, outer shelf, slumped continental slope and open marine hemipelagic facies. This transect can be subdivided into a stable basin plain plus outer shelf in the extreme southwestern parts; and an unstable slope shelf platform in the northeastern parts. The unstable slope shelf platform is characterized by open marine hemipelagic, fine-grained limestones and fine siliciclastic shales (Sudr, Dakhla, Tarawan and Esna formations). The northeastern parts are marked by little contents of planktonic foraminifera and dolomitized, slumped carbonates, intercalated with basinal facies. Tectonically, four remarkable syn-depositional tectonic events (SdTEs) controlled the evolution of the studied succession. These events took place strongly within the Campanian–Ypresian time interval and were still active till Late Eocene. These events took place at: the Santonian/Campanian (S/C) boundary; the Campanian/Maastrichtian (C/M) boundary; the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/P) boundary; and the Middle Paleocene–Early Eocene interval. These tectonic events are four pronounced phases in the tectonic history of the Syrian Arc System (SAS), the collision of the Afro-Arabian and Eurasian plates as well as the closure of the Tethys Sea. Abstract: The Permian Ikakern Formation of the Argana Basin yielded important tetrapod skeletal remains but is still poorly known for any other kind of fossils. Here we present a moderately diverse assemblage of invertebrate and vertebrate traces from red beds in the upper part of the formation (Tourbihine Member, T2) near Timezgadiouine. Recorded ichnotaxa include Spongeliomorpha carlsbergi (), Striatichnium natalis, Amphisauropus, Hyloidichnus, Erpetopus, and Dromopus. The traces occur in laminated muddy siltstone and fine-grained sandstone that we interpret as slack-water deposits in an episodically high energy fluvial setting. Including arthropod burrows, arthropod grazing traces and tetrapod footprints, the ichnofossil assemblage corresponds to the Scoyenia ichnofacies. The described trace fossils provide evidence for various invertebrates and vertebrates hitherto unknown from the body fossil record of the study area. By extending the stratigraphic and geographic range of some of the recorded ichnotaxa, our finds strongly emphasise the importance of the Argana Basin for the reconstruction and understanding of Late Palaeozoic terrestrial ecosystems. Abstract: Tetrapod footprints from the Permian Ikakern Formation of the Argana Basin have long been known but never studied in detail. Here we present the first comprehensive description of recently discovered tracks and trackways that come from near the uppermost layers of an up to 1800m thick red-bed sequence. Assigned to Hyloidichnus and Pachypes, these ichnofossils suggest a Middle to Late Permian age of the track-bearing strata. Potential trackmakers are medium to large-sized moradisaurine captorhinids and pareiasaurs. This strongly parallels the bodyfossil record inasmuch as the only known skeletal remains of terrestrial tetrapods from the study area belong to both of these groups. Based on this twofold evidence, captorhinids and Pareiasauria have to be considered as abundant faunal elements of the ancient floodplain environment that is represented by the upper part of the Ikakern Formation. As one of only a few places in the world with closely associated body and ichnofossils of Late Palaeozoic age, the Argana Basin has a high potential for allowing the reconstruction of terrestrial ecosystems during the early stages of the break-up of central Pangaea and just before Mesozoic diapsid reptiles gained ascendancy. Further research on this stimulating topic will significantly contribute to the understanding of still poorly known Middle and Late Permian tetrapod ichnofaunas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The best record of continental tetrapod faunas crossing the Permo–Triassic boundary (PTB) is found in the Karoo Basin of South Africa. Similar records are not known elsewhere among the former Gondwanan land masses, but it was recently proposed on the basis of palaeontological evidence that the Buena Vista Formation of Uruguay preserves a South American record of continental PTB tetrapods. The Buena Vista Formation was previously correlated to the Lower Triassic (Olenekian) Sanga do Cabral Formation of Brazil on the basis of lithostratigraphic evidence, but recent collecting in the former unit has produced a tetrapod fauna that is distinct to that documented for the latter. The unequivocal tetrapod fossils that have been described thus far from the Buena Vista Formation include indeterminate mastodonsaurid temnospondyls, a plagiosauroid temnospondyl, and a procolophonid reptile. The temnospondyls belong to Triassic groups, whereas the procolophonid is allied most closely with Early Triassic taxa from the Karoo Basin. We conclude that there is no compelling palaeontological evidence for placing any part of the Buena Vista Formation in the Permian. A precise placement of the Buena Vista Formation in the Triassic on the basis of its tetrapod fauna is not possible at this time. Accordingly, the Karoo Basin of South Africa remains the only Gondwanan basin that records a PTB tetrapod fauna. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
