Although many studies indicate that individuals who have experienced a traumatic event can experience posttraumatic growth (PTG), some researchers have questioned the significance of PTG in associations with functioning. The role of PTG in functioning following trauma may be better elucidated by accounting for its joint effects with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Data were analyzed from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of 3847 trauma-exposed U.S. veterans. Participants completed assessments of potentially traumatic events, PTSD symptoms, and PTG, as well as a broad range of sociodemographic, military, trauma, health, personality, and psychosocial characteristics. PTG was independently and moderately associated with higher mental, cognitive, and psychosocial functioning, but not physical functioning. Results showed a similar pattern of findings when examining relations between subdomains of PTG and these aspects of functioning. Additionally, among veterans who screened positive for PTSD, those who endorsed PTG reported higher levels of mental, cognitive, and/or psychosocial functioning than those who did not endorse PTG. Findings may be limited by the use of a cross-sectional design, retrospective self-reports of PTG, and a predominantly older white male veteran sample. Results provide support for the functional significance of PTG and highlight the importance of considering PTSD symptoms to better understand the role of PTG in functioning. This study examines the extent to which depressive symptoms mediate the link between childhood friendship (CF) and physical function among middle-aged and older adults in China. China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data were used; specifically, CHARLS life history survey (conducted from June 1–December 31, 2014) and follow-up health survey (conducted from July 1–September 30, 2015) data were used. The Sobel test, Bootstrap test and multivariable logistic regression were performed to examine the mediating role of depressive symptoms (measured by the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) in the association between CF (measured by a standardized retrospective questionnaire) and physical function, which was measured by basic activities of daily living (BADL) disability, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability, and grip strength. A total of 12,170 participants aged 45 years or older were included in this cross-sectional study. After controlling for covariates, low-quality CF was associated with an increased prevalence of BADL disability (OR = 1.18; 95 % CI = 1.05–1.32), IADL disability (OR = 1.25; 95 % CI = 1.12–1.40), and low grip strength (OR = 1.21; 95 % CI = 1.09–1.34). The proportion of the mediating effect of depressive symptoms was 48 % for CF and BADL, 40 % for CF and IADL, and 11 % for CF and grip strength. Depressive symptoms and worse CF have a joint effect on BADL disability (OR = 3.30; 95 % CI = 2.82–3.85), IADL disability (OR = 3.52; 95 % CI = 3.03–4.09), and low grip strength (OR = 1.65; 95 % CI = 1.43–1.92). Not all potential confounding factors (such as childhood behavioural problems, genetic factors, and memory function) were measured in the analysis, and there may have been recall bias in the retrospective collection of CF data. Individuals with high-quality CF were more likely to have a decreased prevalence of impaired physical function in later life. The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) measure, which assesses past week status of seven domains (physical function mobility, anxiety, depressive symptoms, fatigue, peer relationships, pain interference, and pain intensity), represents a new paradigm using patient-reported outcomes. We used a data-driven approach with PROMIS to identify subgroups of youths receiving depression treatment. Youths (n = 721) enrolled in the Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network who completed the PROMIS were analyzed. Latent class analyses (LCAs) identified subgroups and compared their baseline clinical/sociodemographic features. Compared to population norms, our sample had worse than average physical function, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and pain interference. Using LCA, four subgroups were identified: 1) lower symptom severity and higher physical functioning (14.6 %); 2) higher symptom burden, higher pain interference/intensity, and lower physical functioning (52.7 %); 3) higher symptom burden, higher pain interference/intensity, but with higher physical functioning (9.2 %); and 4) higher symptom burden, but lower physical functioning and pain interference/intensity (23.6 %). Group 3 demonstrated higher resilience than Group 2. In contrast, Group 2 had higher anxiety than Group 4. Individuals may have different symptom profiles due to the observational nature of the study. Replication of these subgroups may be difficult, as future samples may differ in these characteristics. Further work may demonstrate the stability of these groups. A data-driven analysis identified a small but significant subgroup with high physical functioning despite high symptom burden and pain, and this group reported higher resilience. Chronic pain and non-substance use psychiatric disorders (PD) are common comorbidities, both associated with impaired functioning. However, whether and how the prevalence of pain differs in remitted PD compared to past-year PD has been little studied. In this observational study using data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III, we compared the prevalence of moderate/severe pain interference (PI) in past-year Vs remitted PD among adults with any lifetime PD. We further studied the association of both PI and PD remission with mental and physical function. In a sample representative of 77.9 million US adults with lifetime PDs, 31.7 % met criteria for PD remission. The prevalence and adjusted odds of PI was substantially lower among those with remitted PD compared to past-year PD (21.97 % Vs 35.02 %; p <.0001; Odds ratio 0.58, 95 % confidence interval = 0.51–0.66). While PI was independently associated with poorer mental functioning (Regression coefficient (RC) = −4.43, standard error (SE) = 0.33; p <.0001), PD remission was associated with higher mental functioning (RC = 4.79, SE = 0.24; p <.0001). Both PI and PD remission were independently associated with lower physical functioning, but the association was substantially stronger with PI (RC = −15.04, SE 0.27; p <.0001) than PD remission (RC = −0.37, SE 0.15; p =.016). Intrusion symptoms are a core defining feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It was recently proposed that intrusions may be comprised of two distinct underlying processes: internally-cued intrusions (e.g., trauma-related memories), and externally-cued intrusions (e.g., reactivity to trauma-related cues in one's environment). This is the first study to examine the functional correlates of these two intrusion clusters. Participants included 7460 veterans discharged from 40 Veterans Affairs PTSD residential programs across the United States in fiscal years 2018 through 2020. Latent network modeling and structural equation modeling were used to assess the fit of an 8-factor model of PTSD symptoms, which were assessed using the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) PTSD symptoms at admission, and its association with symptoms of depression and generalized anxiety, and emotional and physical functioning. The 8-factor model, with separate intrusion factors, showed superior model fit to the DSM-5 4-factor, 5-factor dysphoric arousal, 6-factor anhedonia, and 7-factor hybrid models of PTSD. Internally-cued intrusions were uniquely associated with dysphoric arousal, decreased avoidance, and worse physical health functioning; whereas, externally-cued intrusions were uniquely associated with greater avoidance, anxious arousal, negative affect, increased generalized anxiety symptoms, and worse emotional functioning. Limitations include the cross-sectional design and use of self-report measures. Findings provide initial support for the clinical utility of a novel 8-factor model of PCL-5 PTSD symptoms, which distinguishes internally- and externally-cued intrusions. Patients with either diabetes (DM) or depression (DP) are prone to developing other diseases and require more medical resources than do the general population. This study aimed to examine health-related quality of life, medical resource use, and physical function of patients with both diabetes mellitus and depression, and the magnitude of effects among patients with different combinations of comorbid diseases. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2009 to 2014. Total 16,159 patients were studied and classified into one of 4 groups: both DM and DP(DM+/DP+), DM+/without DP(DP−), without DM (DM−)/DP+, and DM−/DP−, according to the perceived score in Patient Health Questionnaire and diabetes questionnaire in NHANES. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL), medical resource use, and physical function were measured as outcomes of interests. Multivariate logistic regression models were used. Compared with DM−/DP− patients, the DM+/DP+ (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 2.59; 95 % CI: 1.77–3.80) and DM−/DP+ (AOR: 2.44; 95 % CI: 1.94–3.06) had greater likely to have worse health. In addition, the DM+/DP+ (AOR: 5.40; 95 % CI: 1.30–22.41) and DM+/DP− (AOR: 2.49; 95 % CI: 1.91–3.25) were more likely to have medical visits, and worse physical function. This study found that both depression and diabetes mellitus worsen HRQoL, increase medical resource use, and decrease physical function. Mental health and physical health are intrinsically linked, yet the mechanisms are not well understood. We investigated whether moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) mediated the association between depression and physical function (PF) in midlife. Individuals from two UK birth cohorts born within one week in 1958 (n = 7278) and 1970 (n = 6097) with data on depression (ages 33/34; Malaise Inventory), MVPA (age 42; self-reported) and PF (ages 50/56; Short Form-36 subscale). Covariates included sex, childhood and adulthood social class, maternal mental health, childhood mood, alcohol consumption, smoking habits, sleep, marital status, BMI and long-standing illness/disability. Linear or multinomial logistic regression models examined associations between depression, MVPA and PF. We used a parametric g-computation mediation analysis approach to estimate percent differences in PF. Depression was associated with less frequent MVPA and poorer PF. Lower MVPA was associated with worse PF. The direct effect – randomised analogue not operating via MVPA – of depression on PF was −18.8 % (95%CI:--25.8,-11.8) and −15.8 % (20.6,-11.0) in the 1958 and 1970 cohorts, respectively. The indirect effect – operating via MVPA – was −0.5 % (−1.0,-0.03) and −0.2 % (−0.6, 0.3), resulting in a total proportion mediated of 3.1 % (0.1, 6.0) and 0.9 % (−1.6, 3.4). MVPA was self-reported. Intermediate confounders and mediators were measured at the same age, however associations did not change in sensitivity analysis considering age 46 MVPA (1958 cohort). Although higher MVPA was protective against poor PF, there was only minor evidence that it mediated the association between depression and PF. Although insomnia is a common core symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD), the burden of moderate-to-severe insomnia symptoms in patients with MDD is not well-understood. This study quantified the clinical, patient-centric, and economic burden of adults with MDD with moderate-to-severe insomnia symptoms (MDDIS) compared to adults with MDD with no-to-mild insomnia symptoms (other-MDD) and adults without MDD. Data from 2019 US National Health and Wellness Survey identified adults self-reporting physician-diagnosed depression, stratified by insomnia status (MDDIS: Insomnia Severity Index [ISI] score ≥15; other-MDD: ISI score <15), and adults not reporting depression (non-MDD). Other-MDD and non-MDD were matched 2:1 to MDDIS on age/sex/race. Matched bivariate analyses examined differences in health-related outcomes by depression-insomnia status. Of 74,994 survey respondents, 2045 (2.7%) were classified as MDDIS, 8220 (11.0%) as other-MDD, and 59,859 (79.8%) as non-MDD. MDDIS respondents (vs other-MDD and non-MDD) reported greater depression severity, anxiety severity, daytime sleepiness, activity impairment, direct costs, and costs due to work productivity impairments, and lower mental and physical functioning (all P < 0.05). Depression diagnosis was not based on clinical/diagnostic interview; causal relationships cannot be determined due to the cross-sectional design. Among US adults with MDD, presence of moderate-to-severe insomnia symptoms is associated with additional burden and notable impairments across several health outcomes versus those with MDD but no-to-minimal insomnia symptoms and general population without MDD. Data were derived from waves 4 (2008–2009), 5 (2010–2011), and 6 (2012–2013). A total of 5,080 participants were included in the analysis. Depressive symptoms were dichotomized using the eight-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale in waves 4 and 5 and were regarded as the exposure. Handgrip strength measurements objectively measured in wave 6 were dichotomized according to the 25th percentile of the British norm and used as the outcome. The targeted maximum likelihood estimation model was utilized to assess time-variant depressive symptoms on handgrip strength, adjusted for time-variant and time-invariant covariates. The maintenance of non-depressive symptoms (relative risk [RR], 0.72; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.59–0.87) or improvement of depressive symptoms (RR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.55–0.91) had a protective effect on weak handgrip strength compared with the persistence of depressive symptoms. Background: Adolescent depression can severely interfere with age-appropriate and lifetime development and functionality. Physical functioning in daily life (as a means of individual support) as well as social support from family and friends have been shown to enhance adolescent resilience against depression. By applying a multisystemic model of resilience, this study investigates how these resources reciprocally influence each other and how they interact with depression over time.Methods: Longitudinal data (three assessments over three years) from the Resilient Youth in Stressed Environments project was analyzed using panel network analysis to investigate short- and long-term uni- and bidirectional effects. The sample consisted of N = 500 adolescents from Canada (mean age = 18.49, SD = 3.01, 56.40% young women) at the first assessment.Results: Depression seemed to fluctuate, while the resources showed significant stability over the course of the study. Perceived family and friend support were not significantly influenced by depression while they had significantly negative temporal effects on depression. Only physical functioning showed a negative feedback loop, notably with somatic symptoms of depression. Family and friend support shared a reinforcing feedback loop, while physical functioning was not related to either type of support.Limitations: Future studies should address the low average of depressive symptomatology and subjective, global measures of social support.Conclusions: The resources show potential time-dependent effects: symptom-specific resources need to be applied in the short-term, while a pool of multisystemic resilience resources seems necessary over the long-term to increase the resilience to depression among adolescents. Background: Cognitive impairment has been reported in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). This study aims to explore the association between lifestyle habits and health-related factors and the presence of cognitive symptoms in MDD patients.Methods: Demographic, clinical, health-related variables and cognitive scores measured with the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) were compared between 74 patients with current MDD and 68 healthy controls (HC). To test the hypothesis of associated factors to cognitive symptoms, multivariate backward stepwise linear regression models were run.Results: Significant neuropsychological deficits were evident in MDD compared with HC in the global cognitive index (F=8.29; df=1, 140; p=0.005). In the regression analysis performed on MDD and HC, years of schooling (β=-0.11; p=<0.001), job status (β=-0.50; p=0.016), physical activity (β=-0.25; p=0.04) and age at illness onset (β=0.17; p=0.017) were statistically significant factors associated to cognitive impairment. The regression model ran in HC showed that only years of schooling were significant (β=-0.07; p=<0.001) in this group.Limitations: Sample size was relatively small. Everyday cognitive skills were not evaluated.Conclusions: MDD patients have cognitive deficits. These deficits are linked with the years of education, job status, age of onset of the disease and the performance of physical activity. These results support the importance of the implementation of interventions targeting the cognitive reserve and lifestyle habits of MDD patients, in addition to the conventional therapeutic approach focused on symptoms control.
