Background: We use the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) to explore how different dimensions of poverty more directly linked to young people are associated with depressive symptoms among South African youth.Methods: Data came from the 2017 wave of the nationally-representative National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) in South Africa. We focused on a sample of 15-24-year-olds whose depressive symptoms were assessed using an adapted version of the 10-item Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. We examine how individual dimensions and indicators of the MPI relate to depression, in comparison to more conventional measures, including household income, subjective social standing, overcrowding and personal assets. Cross-sectional analyses were adjusted for clustering to account for sampling design.Results: The MPI index was not associated with probable depression (OR = 1.02, 95 % CI 0.81-1.29). Only lack of access to the labour market emerged as a key individual dimension associated with probable depression (OR = 5.29, 95 % CI 1.70-16.47), a relationship driven by an increased odds for those not in employment, education or training. Lack of household assets, living in an informal dwelling and lower perceived social standing were also associated with increased odds for depression. No gender differences were noted.Limitations: The study is cross-sectional and not suitable to examine the causal nature of the association between multidimensional poverty and depression.Conclusions: Poverty dimensions that measure youth's access to employment or training have a strong association with depression. Background: The treatment gap for bipolar disorder is aggravated by economic inequality. Around half of the world's population live in a low-or lower-middle-income country, where research on treatment is scarce. Hence, this review aims to determine the number and types of intervention studies conducted on adults with bipolar disorder in low-income and lower-middle-income countries and analyze the effect of these interventions on symptom severity, medical adherence, and quality of life.Methods: A systematic review was conducted in June and November 2021 using eight databases. Controlled intervention trials on adults with bipolar disorder on data from low-income and lower-middle-income countries at time of publication were included. The risk of bias was assessed using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials or The Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions assessment tool.Results: Twenty-one studies met the inclusion criteria. These were divided into four subtypes based on the intervention; pharmacotherapy (=12), psychosocial (=7), electroconvulsive therapy (=1), and traditional medicine (=1). Three studies were from low-income countries. A high risk of bias characterized the studies; only four studies reported the procedures used for randomization. Most studies, however, identified a beneficial effect on symptom severity, and in addition, medical adherence could be improved with psychosocial interventions.Limitations: Heterogeneity across studies prevented any meaningful pooling of data to meta-analyses.Conclusion: Data for treatment interventions contextualized to the local setting for bipolar disorder remains sparse, particularly from low-resource settings. Background: Perinatal anxiety is associated with adverse outcomes for women and their infants. Women in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) may be at higher risk of perinatal anxiety. We aimed to systematically review and synthesise the evidence on prevalence of perinatal anxiety in LMIC.Method: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PscyhINFO, Global Health and Web of Science to identify studies assessing prevalence of perinatal anxiety in LMIC. Studies published since January 2016 were included. Screening and data extraction was conducted independently by two reviewers. Pooled prevalence estimates were calculated using random-effect meta-analyses and sources of heterogeneity explored through subgroup analyses and meta-regression.Results: We screened 9494 titles and abstracts, reviewed 700 full-texts and included 54 studies in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of self-reported anxiety symptoms was 29.2% (95%CI 24.5-34.2; I2 98.7%; 36 studies; n = 28,755) antenatally and 24.4% (95%CI 16.2-33.7; I2 98.5%; 15 studies; n = 6370) postnatally. The prevalence of clinically-diagnosed anxiety disorder was 8.1% (95%CI 4.4-12.8; I2 88.1% 5 studies; n = 1659) antenatally and 16.0% (95% CI 13.5-18.9; n = 113) postnatally.Limitations: Our search was limited to studies published since January 2016 in order to update a previous review on this topic.Conclusion: Perinatal anxiety represents a significant burden in LMIC, with one in four women experiencing symptoms during pregnancy or postpartum. Research remains lacking in a significant proportion of LMIC, particularly in the lowest income countries. Purpose: Our study investigated the relationships between the prevalence of depressive symptoms and education levels in those aged ≥20 years.Methods: A total of 34,102 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2005-2018 were involved in our cross-sectional study. The relations of depressive symptoms (as outcome variable) and education levels (as an independent variable) were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression models in the main analyzes. Sensitivity analyzes, including a multiple sensitivity analysis, were also performed.Result: The education levels were negatively associated with depressive symptoms after adjusting related covariates. Compared with the reference group of individuals with less than 9th grade, people with college graduate or above had an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 0.464 (95% CI 0.361, 0.595, P < 0.0001). On the other hand, the statistically significant negative association disappeared among Mexican Americans, other races, separated, and high family poverty income ratio group. These results remained stable under a wide range of sensitivity analyzes.Conclusion: Our study indicated the elevated education levels correlated with the decreased prevalence of depressive symptoms, and race, marital status, and family economic factors played a critical role in the relationship. This report reminds us to pay close attention to the further study of factors that affected the association between depressive symptoms and education levels.Limitations: The cross-sectional study leaves problems about the direction of causality unclear. Background: There are no multi-country studies on the association between informal caregiving and anxiety from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Therefore, we investigated this relationship in a large predominantly nationally representative sample from 47 LMICs.Methods: Cross sectional data from the World Health Survey were analyzed. Anxiety symptoms referred to severe or extreme problems with worries or anxiety in the past 30 days. Information on caregiving in the past 12 months was obtained. Multivariable logistic regression analysis adjusting for age, sex, marital status, education, household size, employment, disability, and country was conducted. Data on 237,952 individuals aged ≥18 years [mean (SD) age 38.4 (16.0) years; 50.8% female] were analyzed.Results: After adjustment for potential confounders, caregiving was positively associated with anxiety symptoms (OR = 1.52; 95%CI = 1.40, 1.65). Greater number of caregiving activities was associated with higher odds for anxiety symptoms dose-dependently, with the OR (95%CI) for engagement in 5 activities (vs. no caregiving) being 2.19 (1.86-2.58).Conclusion: Caregiving is associated with higher odds for anxiety symptoms among adults in LMICs. Given the increasing importance of informal caregivers in long-term care provision and the fact that good health of caregivers is vital to sustain this system, interventions to address mental health of caregivers in LMICs are urgently needed. Background: Depression's relations to psychosocial processes are complex, bidirectional, and include financial functioning. The current study compared the extent to which household income, financial literacy (knowledge and skill), and financial health (saving, spending, borrowing, and planning behavior) were risk factors and outcomes of depression., Methods: A United States national sample of working-aged adults (N = 6565) completed self-report measures of financial functioning and depression in years 2020 and 2022. Depression scales assessed both negative (depressive symptoms) and positive (life satisfaction) affective dimensions., Results: Lower income, less financial literacy, and especially poorer financial health correlated significantly with more depressive symptoms and lower life satisfaction. Poorer financial health demonstrated the strongest prospective relations with increasing depressive symptoms and decreasing life satisfaction over the two-year retest interval. In parallel, higher depressive symptoms and lower life satisfaction each predicted subsequent decreases in financial health., Limitations: Results from this longitudinal, observational study suggested but could not establish causal connections between depression and financial functioning. The study's novel results require replication before clinical application., Conclusions: More so than low income or limited financial literacy, poor financial health is both a risk factor and potential outcome of depression, including more depressive symptoms and lower life satisfaction. Background: Depression is highly prevalent in low- and middle- income countries (LMIC) and associated with significant cognitive dysfunction across multiple domains. However, little is known about neurocognitive tests used in people with depression in LMIC. We aimed to investigate cognitive performance and cognitive tests in depression research in LMIC., Methods: APA PsycInfo, Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, and Global Health were systematically searched for studies that implemented a cognitive performance test in a depressed, LMIC population. Tool quality was assessed using an adapted scale for quality of measures in cross-cultural settings. Data extracted included demographics, depression and cognitive performance measures, and cognitive performance comparisons between depression and control groups., Results: 29 studies met eligibility criteria, involving a total of 19,100 participants from 11 LMIC. 93.1 % of studies were conducted in upper middle-income countries. 67 cognitive performance tools were implemented. Reliability was reported for 5.6 % of cognitive performance tests and validity was reported for 8.3 %. 36.1 % of tests used were culturally adapted. 75.9 % of included studies implemented at least one memory test. Cognitive deficits were observed in all depressed groups, especially in memory (Cohen's d = -1.60, 95 % CI -2.02 to -1.18)., Limitations: Heterogeneity between studies; averaged results across memory subtypes; no assessment of depression severity and cognitive deficits associations; restrictive search terms., Conclusions: Cognitive impairments in depression, especially in memory, are prevalent in LMIC. This research has drawn attention to the burden of cognitive dysfunction in depression in LMIC, and to the disparate research gap in LMIC. Background The vast majority of women with perinatal depression (PND) live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Task sharing is an alternative delivery strategy to implement PND services. However, the exploration of influencing factors for task sharing in PND services is poor. Therefore, this study aimed to identify factors affecting LMICs to implement PND task-sharing interventions from the perspective of stakeholders and weigh their levels of evidence. Methods A comprehensive literature search was carried out through six English and Chinese databases on qualitative data. We used Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP)/Meta Quality Appraisal Tool (MetaQAT) to appraise included studies, extracted data according to the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), and assigned levels of confidence in the factors through Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation-Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research (GRADE-CERQual). Results 17 studies met the eligibility criteria, factors identified with high levels of evidence were coded to the CFIR constructs, including "Knowledge and Attitudes of Those Served by the Organization", "Available Resources", "Compatibility", "Access to knowledge and information", "Resources of Those Served by the Organization" and "Alignment". Conclusion This metasynthesis highlights task sharing in PND interventions is influenced by multiple factors. We synthesized and developed implementation recommendations for practice.
