This article presents an overview of traditional Southeast Asian gong music and it's connection to Vietnamese culture. The aesthetics of gong music are explored as well as a paradigm for understanding the importance of music in local ethnic cultural contexts. The author asserts that studying the music not only provides insight into Vietnamese culture, but gives a broader understanding of music in Western society as well.
