Accurate vehicle acceleration prediction is useful for developing reliable Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) and improving road safety. The existence of driver heterogeneity magnifies the variations in acceleration data, leading to consequential impacts on the precision of vehicle acceleration prediction. However, few studies have fully considered the driver heterogeneity when predicting vehicle acceleration. To model the characteristics of individual drivers, this study first identifies the driving behavior semantics which is defined as the underlying patterns of driving behaviors. The analysis results from the coupled hidden Markov model (CHMM) are used to evaluate the driving behavior differences between different drivers by Wasserstein distance. Then the convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network are applied to predict vehicle acceleration. To validate the accuracy of the proposed prediction framework, vehicle acceleration data in car-following conditions is extracted from the safety pilot model deployment (SPMD) dataset. The segmentation results indicate that the CHMM possesses a robust capacity for modeling driving behavior. The prediction results demonstrate that the proposed framework, which incorporates driver clustering before prediction, significantly improves the accuracy of predictions. And the CNN-LSTM outperforms the LSTM in predicting vehicle acceleration during car-following scenarios. To describe the microtrajectory change behavior of two-wheeled vehicles when encountering nonrigid obstacles, this paper proposes an obstacle avoidance model of two-wheeled vehicles for nonrigid obstacles based on the improved social force method. In the model, the obstacle avoidance characteristics of two-wheeled vehicles for nonrigid obstacles and the safety operation requirements of two-wheeled vehicles are considered. The calculation methods of the minimum boundary distance of avoidance and the boundary avoidance force range edge function are proposed based on the ultimate turning angle and boundary avoidance characteristics, respectively. The speed control and direction control behavior of the rider to the vehicle is abstracted as the form of social force, and the two-wheeled vehicle/rider individual is subjected to the avoidance force and correction force perpendicular to the direction of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle body. The centrifugal trajectory obstacle avoidance motion obeying the Newtonian mechanics is studied based on the characteristics of the vehicle body turning angle change. Different traffic environments are constructed by MATLAB software and simulated according to the model running logic, and sensitivity analysis is performed based on the actual data collected in the survey. The simulation results show that, under the same conditions, compared with μ i = 50N, when μ i = 200N, the X-axis displacement of the simulated vehicle in the avoidance process is shortened by 26.31%, and the body deflection angle increases by 50.75% at the end moment of the avoidance process. Compared with electric motorcycles, the displacement of the X-axis in the avoidance process of the electric bicycle is shortened by 16.92%, and the body deflection angle at the end moment of the avoidance process is increased by 13.68%. The simulation results show that the model can well describe the trajectory change behavior characteristics of two-wheeled vehicles/riders encountering nonrigid obstacles in real situations, and the obstacle avoidance model of two-wheeled vehicles proposed in this paper is considered to be traffic justified. Vehicle and crew scheduling is vital in public transit planning. Conventionally, the issues are handled sequentially as the vehicle scheduling problem (VSP) and crew scheduling problem (CSP). However, integrating these planning steps offers additional flexibility, resulting in improved efficiency compared with sequential planning. Given the ever-growing market share of electric buses, this paper introduces a new model for integrated electric VSP and CSP, called EVCSPM. This model employs the minimum cost flow formulations for electric VSP, set partitioning for CSP, and linking constraints. Due to the nonlinear integer property of EVCSPM, we propose a method that hybrids a matching-based heuristic and integer linear programming solver, GUROBI. This study proposes a two-level optimization model system for vehicle control and signal timing at isolated signal intersections under the mixed traffic flow environment composed of intelligent connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and connected human-driven vehicles (CHVs), to minimize the energy consumption and vehicle delay at intersections. The proposed two-layer optimization model is composed of a two-layer vehicle trajectory control model and a fuzzy control signal timing optimization model. The two-layer vehicle trajectory control model includes a signal-oriented vehicle trajectory control model and a car-following oriented vehicle trajectory control model. The former calculates expected acceleration and speed commands at each time step according to the coming signal information, to help vehicle pass the closest signal intersection without stopping during the green light interval; the latter uses the variable headway (VTH) strategy to follow the preceding vehicle by maintaining a safe distance. A microscopic simulator based on SUMO is developed to test the performance of the proposed optimization algorithm. In the simulation experiment, with the driving characteristics of CHV drivers considered, the results show that our model performs well under a CAV penetration rate of 30%–60% and under small or moderate levels of traffic flow. The average waiting time of vehicles is reduced by about 25% compared with the uncontrolled scheme. Under the condition of penetration rate of 60%, the average energy consumption of vehicles in the proposed model is 17.56% lower than that of the uncontrolled scheme. In addition, the proposed model reduces by 21.94% compared with the scheme of only controlling vehicles. To explore the impact of autonomous vehicles (AVs) on human-driven vehicles (HDVs), a solution for AV to coexist harmoniously with HDV during the car following period when AVs are in low market penetration rate (MPR) was provided. An extension car following framework with two possible soft optimization targets was proposed in this article to improve the experience of HDV followers with different following strategies by deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm. The pretreated Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) dataset was used for the experiments. 1027 car following events with being redefined were extracted from it, in which 600 of the events were used for training and 427 of the events were used for testing. The different driving strategies obtained from the classical car following models were embedded into virtual environment built by OpenAI gym. The reward function combined safety, efficiency, jerk, and stability was used to encourage the agent with DDPG algorithm to maximize it. The final result reveals that disturbance of HDV followers decreases by 2.362% (strategy a), 8.184% (strategy b), and 13.904% (strategy c), respectively. The disturbance of HDV follower decreases by 14.961% (strategy a), 12.020% (strategy b), and 13.425% (strategy c), respectively. HDV followers with different strategies get less jerk in both soft optimizations. AV passengers get a loss on jerk and efficiency, but safety is enhanced. Also, AV car following performs better than HDV car following in both soft and brutal optimizations. To investigate and compare the lane changing behavior of passenger cars and heavy vehicles during the implementation period (defined as the interval from the start time to the end time of a lane change maneuver), this study applies the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) method to model the lane changing behavior of heavy vehicles and passenger cars, respectively. Results show that the lane change models vary with the vehicle types and lane change directions. Different factors are considered by the drivers of passenger cars and heavy vehicles when implementing lane changes to different directions. Partial dependence plots of GBDT models reveal that the influence of independent variables on lane changing behavior is nonlinear and complicated, which means that the same variable leads to various effects on the lane change decision across different vehicle types and lane change directions. In contrast with other state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method can obtain more accurate results. The findings indicate that it is necessary to build specific lane change models based on vehicle types and lane change directions for microscopic traffic simulators and autonomous vehicles. Although automated vehicles could release drivers from the driving task, there are still passengers sitting in the vehicle. It is required that the driving comfort of passengers should be guaranteed. Cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) vehicle is of the one important type of automated vehicles using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications with various communication links. Different V2V communication links might have different driving comfort. Then, this paper focuses on exploring which link type for CACC vehicles is better from the perspective of improving driving comfort. To deal with this, car-following models of manual-driven vehicles (MDV) and CACC vehicles were first described. Then, simulations were performed using these car-following models, in which various CACC feedback link types, CACC penetration rates, and flow scenarios were taken into consideration. Simulations outputted microcosmic trajectory data of vehicles, based on which the driving comfort was evaluated using the comfort index described by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 2631-1. From the driving comfort perspective, simulation results suggest that CACC should monitor the immediately preceding vehicle and the third vehicle ahead when CACC penetration rates are less than approximately 50%. In the research of cooperative adaptive cruise control, the coupling relationship between the communication delay, the following time headway, and the string stability leads to a stringent limit on the minimum allowable following time headway. To deal with this limitation, this paper proposes the Disturbance Observer-Smith Predictor Compensation (DOB-SPC)-based Master-Slave architecture. The SPC is adopted to move the communication delays and actuator delays outside the feedback loop in the Master-Slave architecture. It theoretically realizes decoupling when parameters are estimated accurately and achieves zero-headway-string-stability for arbitrary values of communication delay. Subsequently, the robust performance of SPC with estimation deviation of vehicle model dynamic lag, actuator delay, and communication delay in practical application is discussed through the changing trend of the minimum string-stable time headway. To alleviate this problem, the DOB is designed to compensate for the interference caused by the perturbation of vehicle dynamic parameters and improve the estimation accuracy. The simulation results of a four-vehicular platoon show that the string stability and following accuracy are fully guaranteed by applying the proposed strategy, even with smaller headway in the presence of estimation deviation. Vehicle rear-end collisions are primarily caused by tight car following in a continuous traffic flow, as well as a driver's incorrect perception of the traffic environment ahead and delayed response. To facilitate an investigation pertaining to rear-end collision mechanisms and accurately measure the risk, the concept of a vehicle group is introduced herein. A risk measurement model for a vehicle group (RMVG) based on temporal and spatial similarities is proposed. First, vehicles are categorized based on their temporal and spatial similarities. Risk measurement metrics are defined based on the traffic composition, movement state, and conflict extent. Subsequently, vehicle group risk identification and risk measurement models based on an isolation forest are established. the rear-end collision risk of the vehicle groups is analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Finally, the RMVG is tested using the vehicle trajectory data set of Longpan South Road, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, China, and the results are compared with those of a support vector machine and local outlier factor. The results show that the accuracy of the RMVG is higher than those of other models: its accuracy rate and specificity are 95.68% and 88.89%, respectively, whereas its false alarm rate is only 3.47%. Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are emerging technology that attracts the interests of many transportation professionals and computational scientists. Several recent studies have investigated different model frameworks of CAVs in different transportation environments, such as on freeways and at conventional intersections. Nevertheless, few efforts have been made to investigate the performances of CAVs at innovative intersections, and the lack of knowledge can result in an inaccurate prediction of CAVs performances in the existing transportation network. This research intends to mitigate this research gap by studying the traffic delay and fuel consumption of CAVs in the environment of the superstreet and its equivalent conventional intersection through simulation-based experiments. A real-world superstreet in Leeland, NC, is selected and used. A conventional intersection with equivalent road designs is established in the simulation platform to make a comparison with the selected superstreet. This research develops both platooning and trajectory planning modeling frameworks to examine the implications of CAVs with different capabilities. The Intelligent Driver Model (IDM) is selected and applied to model the CAV behaviors, while Wiedemann 99 (W99) is used to model Human-Driven Vehicles (HDVs). The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of both platooning and trajectory planning, respectively. Different effects of CAVs in the superstreet and its equivalent conventional intersection are observed. The findings from this research can provide an important reference for transportation planners and policymakers in predicting the influence of CAVs on the existing transportation infrastructure. Lane changing behavior has a significant impact on traffic efficiency and may lead to traffic delays or even accidents. It is important to plan a safe and efficient lane-changing trajectory that coordinates with the surrounding environment. Most conventional lane-changing models need to establish and solve constrained optimization models during the whole process, while reinforcement learning can just take the current state as input and directly output actions to vehicles. This study develops a lane-changing model using the deep deterministic policy gradient method, which can simultaneously control the lateral and longitudinal motions of the vehicle. To optimize its performance, a reward function is properly designed by combining safety, efficiency, gap, headway, and comfort features. To avoid collisions, a safety modification model is developed to check and correct acceleration at every time step. The driving trajectory data of 1169 lane-changing scenarios extracted from the Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) dataset are used to train and test the model. The proposed model can quickly converge in training phase. Testing results show it can complete safe and efficient lane changing in different lane-changing scenarios with both shorter time headway and lane-changing duration than human drivers. Compared with the conventional dynamic lane-changing trajectory planning model, our model can reduce collision risk. It is also evaluated in automated and nonautomated mixed traffic in SUMO. We propose a multiagent, large-scale, vehicle routing modeling framework for the simulation of transportation system. The goal of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we investigate how individual and social knowledge interact and ultimately influence the effectiveness of resulting traffic flow. Secondly, we evaluate how different discrete-event simulation designs (delays vs. queuing) affect conclusions within the model. We present a new agent-based model that combines the efficient discrete-event approach to modeling with the intelligent drivers who are capable to learn about their environment in the long-term perspective from both, individual experience, and widely available social knowledge. The approach is illustrated as practical application to modeling commuter behavior in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. All simulations in the paper are fully reproducible as they have been carried out by utilizing a set of opensource libraries and tools that we have developed for the Julia programming language and that are openly available on GitHub. Reverse Horizontal Curves (RHCs) are among the most accident-prone road points, with many annual fatalities and injuries. These fatalities can increase dramatically if the RHCs and longitudinal slopes are combined. The importance of increasing the safety of RHCs, especially in mountainous routes, is doubled due to the possibility of combining RHCs with vertical extensions or combining them with so-called steep slopes. This study used vehicle dynamic modeling to evaluate the lateral friction of various vehicles. Including the E-Class Sedan, E-Class SUV, Truck, and Bus, moving on RHCs combined with a longitudinal slope (downgrade, upgrade, and direct distance). Then, the RHC lateral friction model was presented using the multiple regression model based on the effective parameters, including design speeds, direct distance, and different longitudinal slopes. The results showed that speed, longitudinal slope, and vehicle type had the most impact, and direct distance had the most negligible impact in friction coefficient models. Based on the modeling results, the higher the design's speed and the shorter the direct distance, the lower the lateral friction coefficient for the Sedan and SUV. Hence, the safety of the vehicles is greater. For trucks, reduced speed, increased direct distance, and reduced slope led to increased safety. In the results, the most critical state was the lateral friction coefficient at a speed of 80 km/h and a direct distance of 116 m for the SUV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we selected four real-world rear-end crash scenarios with different crash characteristics. The vehicles involved in those crashes were not equipped with any crash avoidance systems. We then used the accident reconstruction method to build those crash scenarios in PC-Crash software. Then, different FCW/AEB safety algorithms have been defined for a subject vehicle model in each crash scenario and each scenario was simulated for a set of input parameters such as vehicle speed, brake intensity, and driver reaction time. The range and distribution of input parameters were extracted from the related field crash data and available literature. A total number of 16000 simulations have been conducted which produced input-output datasets for further investigations. Finally, the effects of input parameters on simulation outcomes including crash occurrence, AEB activation, injury risk, and vehicle damage have been quantified using the Boruta algorithm. The results indicated that the overall effectiveness of the AEB system was a 57% reduction of rear-end crashes, a 52% reduction of injury severity (striking vehicle's passengers), and a 47% reduction of damages for striking vehicles. The results also showed that the available AEB algorithms were more effective for the average speed equal to or less than 80 kmph. The speed of the subject vehicle, type of AEB algorithm, sensor detection range, and driver reaction time were the most important parameters on crash outcomes. By installing on-board diagnostics (OBD) on tested vehicles, the after-treatment exhaust emissions can be monitored in real time to construct driving cycle-based emission models, which can provide data support for the construction of dynamic emission inventories of mobile source emission. However, in actual vehicle emission detection systems, due to the equipment installation costs and differences in vehicle driving conditions, engine operating conditions, and driving behavior patterns, it is impossible to ensure that the emission monitoring data of different vehicles always follow the same distribution. The traditional machine learning emission model usually assumes that the training set and test set of emission test data are derived from the same data distribution, and a unified emission model is used for estimation of different types of vehicles, ignoring the difference in monitoring data distribution. In this study, we attempt to build a diesel vehicle NOx emission prediction model based on the deep transfer learning framework with a few emission monitoring data. The proposed model firstly uses Spearman correlation analysis and Lasso feature selection to accomplish the selection of factors with high correlation with NOx emission from multiple sources of external factors. Then, the stacked sparse AutoEncoder is used to map different vehicle working condition emission data into the same feature space, and then, the distribution alignment of different vehicle working condition emission data features is achieved by minimizing maximum mean discrepancy (MMD) in the feature space. Finally, we validated the proposed method with the diesel vehicle OBD data that were collected by the Hefei Environmental Protection Bureau. The comprehensive experiment results show that our method can achieve the feature distribution alignment of emission data under different vehicle working conditions and improve the prediction performance of the NOx inversion model given a little amount of NOx emission monitoring data. The driving state of a self-driving vehicle represents an important component in the self-driving decision system. To ensure the safe and efficient driving state of a self-driving vehicle, the driving state of the self-driving vehicle needs to be evaluated quantitatively. In this paper, a driving state assessment method for the decision system of self-driving vehicles is proposed. First, a self-driving vehicle and surrounding vehicles are compared in terms of the overtaking frequency (OTF), and an OTF-based driving state evaluation algorithm is proposed considering the future driving efficiency. Next, a decision model based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm and the proposed method is designed, and the driving state assessment method is integrated with the existing time-to-collision (TTC) and minimum safe distance. In addition, the reward function and multiple driving scenarios are designed so that the most efficient driving strategy at the current moment can be determined by optimal search under the condition of ensuring safety. Finally, the proposed decision model is verified by simulations in four three-lane highway scenarios. The simulation results show that the proposed decision model that integrates the self-driving vehicle driving state assessment method can help self-driving vehicles to drive safely and to maintain good maneuverability. In this paper, we studied a stochastic bi-objective mathematical model for effective and reliable rescue operations in multigraph network. The problem is addressed by a two-stage stochastic nonlinear mixed-integer program where the reliability of routes is explicitly traded-off with total weighted completion time. The underlying transportation network is able to keep a group of multiattribute parallel arcs between every pair of nodes. By this, the proposed model should consider the routing decision in logistic planning along with the path selection in an uncertain condition. The first stage of the model concerns with the vehicle routing decisions which is not involved with random parameters; besides, the second stage of the model involves with the departure time at each demand node and path finding decisions after observation of random vectors in the first stage considering a finite number of scenarios. To efficiently solve the presented model, an enhanced nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is proposed. The effectiveness of the introduced method is then evaluated by conducting several numerical examples. The results implied the high performance of our method in comparison to the standard NSGA-II. All human drivers can be characterised by their habitual choice of driving behaviours, which results in a wide range of observed driving patterns and manoeuvres. Developing control strategies for autonomous vehicles that address this feature would increase the public acceptance of such vehicles. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel approach to developing rule-based fuzzy logic driver models that simulate different driving styles in the car-following regimes. These driver models were trained with the collected on-road driving data to capture corresponding human drivers' characteristics. The proposed approach consists of three main components: collecting on-road driving data, developing a vehicle model, and establishing the car-following driver models. Firstly, an instrumented vehicle was used to collect driving data over the same route for three consecutive months. Car-following scenarios during these journeys were extracted, and related data were processed accordingly. Afterwards, a representative model of the instrumented vehicle was created and evaluated. Finally, a fuzzy logic driver model that uses humanized inputs was developed and calibrated with the recorded data. The developed driver model's performance was assessed using the collected driving data and a baseline PID driver model. With the performance validated, models representing more aggressive and more defensive driving styles were derived following the same procedure. A cross-driver analysis was then implemented in a normalized car-following scenario with the established vehicle model to investigate the impacts of different driving styles further. The developed driver model can introduce driving styles into drive cycle experiments and replicate on-road real driving emission tests in the laboratory. Moreover, as the proposed method has high robustness to incomplete datasets, it can be a more cost-effective option to facilitate the development of humanized and customized vehicle control strategies for autonomous driving. Purpose. In order to study the impact of grey delivery time uncertainty on customer satisfaction and delivery costs, a vehicle routing problem with grey delivery time windows and multiobjective constraints is defined. Method. The paper first defines the uncertainty of the delivery vehicle's arrival time to the customer as grey uncertainty and then whitens the grey time windows; at the same time, the customer's hard time windows is expanded into a soft time windows to measure customer satisfaction when the vehicle arrives. Experiment. In order to verify the validity of the established model, numerical experiments are carried out in two groups based on the Solomon example, and the solution is solved based on the improved quantum evolution algorithm. Analysis. Distribution cost fluctuations and customer satisfaction fluctuations with grey time windows are relatively small; under different satisfaction threshold conditions, the distribution cost is increased gently with the satisfaction threshold. The decision-making models that are able to deal with complex and dynamic urban intersections are critical for the development of autonomous vehicles. A key challenge in operating autonomous vehicles robustly is to accurately detect the trajectories of other participants and to consider safety and efficiency concurrently into interactions between vehicles. In this work, we propose an approach for developing a tactical decision-making model for vehicles which is capable of predicting the trajectories of incoming vehicles and employs the conflict resolution theory to model vehicle interactions. The proposed algorithm can help autonomous vehicles cross intersections safely. Firstly, Gaussian process regression models were trained with the data collected at intersections using subgrade sensors and a retrofit autonomous vehicle to predict the trajectories of incoming vehicles. Then, we proposed a multiobjective optimization problem (MOP) decision-making model based on efficient conflict resolution theory at intersections. After that, a nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) and deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) are employed to select the optimal motions in comparison with each other. Finally, a simulation and verification platform was built based on Matlab/Simulink and PreScan. The reliability and effectiveness of the tactical decision-making model was verified by simulations. The results indicate that DDPG is more reliable and effective than NSGA-II to solve the MOP model, which provides a theoretical basis for the in-depth study of decision-making in a complex and uncertain intersection environment. Mobile phone data have become a critical data source for transportation research. While a cell-id trajectory was routinely reorganized by International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI), it potentially allows to analyze transportation behaviors and social interaction of total population, with a full temporal coverage at low cost. However, cell-id trajectory is often sparse due to low reporting frequency and uncertainness of mobile holders' position. So, the cell-id trajectory refinement has been recognized as challenging work to further facilitate trajectory data mining. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to identify cell-id trajectories of public service vehicles (PSVs) from large volume of trajectories and further refines these cell-id trajectories by a heuristic global optimization approach. The modified longest common subsequence (LCSS) method is used to match a cell-id trajectory and a public transportation route (PTR) and correspondingly calculates their similarities for determining whether the trajectory is PSV mode or not. Taking full advantages of the nature of a PSV tends to move on the PTR in uniform motion to meet a prescript visit to stops, a heuristic global optimization approach is deployed to build a spatiotemporal model of a PSV motion, which estimates new locations of cell-id trajectories on the PTR. The approach was finally tested using Beijing cellular network signaling datasets. The precision of PSV trajectory detection is 90%, and the recall is 88%. Evaluated by our GNSS-logged trajectories, the mean absolute error (MAE) of refined PSV trajectories is 144.5 m and the standard deviation (St. Dev) is 81.8 m. In order to analyze the effectiveness of setting exclusive pedestrian phase (EPP) under different vehicle yielding rates, the effect of EPPs on traffic efficiency is studied and a setting condition of EPP considering pedestrian-vehicle interaction is proposed in this paper. First, the main factors influencing the behavior of vehicles and pedestrians during pedestrian-vehicle interaction are analyzed, and a pedestrian-vehicle interaction (PVI) model at the crosswalk of urban road is established. Second, assuming that vehicle arrival obeys the Poisson distribution, the delay models of vehicle passengers and pedestrians crossing the street at the intersection are established, and taking the total delay of traffic participants as the main index, the setting condition of EPP are proposed. Third, based on the video of pedestrian-vehicle interaction at crosswalks, the parameters of the proposed model are calibrated. Through sensitivity analysis, the change of the total delay of traffic participants is analyzed under different conditions of pedestrian and vehicle arrival rates. Finally, by introducing pedestrian-vehicle interaction rules, a cellular automata (CA) simulation platform of pedestrian-vehicle interaction in crosswalk is established; based on the field data of Shanghai, a simulation model of intersection is established, and the total delay, queue length, and vehicle throughput under conventional signal control plan and EPP plan are compared. The results show that the pedestrian-vehicle interaction process has a great influence on the total delay of traffic participants at intersections, and pedestrian-vehicle interaction should be considered in the setting conditions of EPP. Under the same condition of vehicular flow, the more the pedestrian flow is, the smaller the delay increment will be. The vehicle nonstrict priority give-way behavior (VNPGWB) is a common part of traffic interaction between motorized and nonmotorized vehicles in many countries. This study proposes a mixed-flow cellular automaton model to simulate the passing of vehicles in front of bicycles at crosswalks. The mixed-flow model combines a vehicle model with a bicycle model, using nonstrict priority give-way and strict give-way two driving behaviors defined as relating to the decision point rule and the launching rule, respectively. Simulation results showed that as the vehicle and bicycle inflow rates increased, a critical inflow rate divided vehicle and bicycle traffic flow into free flow and saturated flow conditions. The values of vehicle saturation flow decreased from 0.34 to 0.05, and the values of bicycle saturation flow decreased from 0.54 to 0.44, indicating that the mixed traffic flow has a negative effect on vehicle and bicycle saturated flow. Results also showed that VNPGWB effectively improves vehicle saturation flow over that of the strict give way. Driver's intention of the front vehicle plays an important role in the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system. If the front vehicle brakes suddenly, there is potential collision risk for following vehicle. Therefore, we propose a driver's intention recognition model for the front vehicle, which is based on the backpropagation (BP) neural network and hidden Markov model (HMM). The brake pedal, accelerator pedal, and vehicle speed data are used as the input of the proposed BP-HMM model to recognize the driver's intention, which includes uniform driving, normal braking, and emergency braking. According to the recognized driver's intention transmitted by Internet of vehicles, an AEB model for the following vehicle is proposed, which can dynamically change the critical braking distance under different driving conditions to avoid rear-end collision. In order to verify the performance of the proposed models, we conducted driver's intention recognition and AEB simulation tests in the cosimulation environment of Simulink and PreScan. The simulation test results show that the average recognition accuracy of the proposed BP-HMM model was 98%, which was better than that of the BP and HMM models. In the Car to Car Rear moving (CCRm) and Car to Car Rear braking (CCRb) tests, the minimum relative distance between the following vehicle and the front vehicle was within the range of 1.5 m–2.7 m and 2.63 m–5.28 m, respectively. The vehicle-following behavior is a self-organizing behavior that restores dynamic balance under the stimulation of external environmental factors. In fact, there are asymmetric problems in the process of acceleration and deceleration of drivers. The existing traditional models ignored the differences between acceleration and deceleration of vehicles. In order to solve this problem, the vehicles driving on the road are compared to interacting molecules. Vehicle-following characteristics are studied, and the molecular following model is established based on molecular dynamics. The model parameters under different conditions are calibrated considering the required safety distance by the vehicle and the reaction time of the driver. With the help of the vehicle running track graphs, speed, and acceleration graphs, the numerical simulations of the molecular following model and the classical optimal speed vehicle-following model are carried out. The results of the comparative analysis show that the acceleration in the process of acceleration and deceleration is not constant but more sensitive to the deceleration of the preceding vehicle than to the acceleration and more sensitive to the acceleration/deceleration of the short-distance vehicle than to the acceleration/deceleration of the long-distance vehicle. Therefore, the molecular following model can better describe the vehicle-following behavior, and the research results can provide a theoretical basis and a technical reference for the analysis of traffic flow dynamic characteristics and adaptive cruise control technology. The introduction of automated vehicles is expected to affect traffic performance. Microscopic traffic simulation offers good possibilities to investigate the potential effects of the introduction of automated vehicles. However, current microscopic traffic simulation models are designed for modelling human-driven vehicles. Thus, modelling the behaviour of automated vehicles requires further development. There are several possible ways to extend the models, but independent of approach a large problem is that the information available on how automated vehicles will behave is limited to today's partly automated vehicles. How future generations of automated vehicles will behave will be unknown for some time. There are also large uncertainties related to what automation functions are technically feasible, allowed, and actually activated by the users, for different road environments and at different stages of the transition from 0 to 100% of automated vehicles. This article presents an approach for handling several of these uncertainties by introducing conceptual descriptions of four different types of driving behaviour of automated vehicles (Rail-safe, Cautious, Normal, and All-knowing) and presents how these driving logics can be implemented in a commonly used traffic simulation program. The driving logics are also linked to assumptions on which logic that could operate in which environment at which part of the transition period. Simulation results for four different types of road facilities are also presented to illustrate potential effects on traffic performance of the driving logics. Most existing longitudinal control strategies for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) have unclear adaptability without scientific analysis regarding the key parameters of the control algorithm. This paper presents an optimal longitudinal control strategy for a homogeneous CAV platoon. First of all, the CAV platoon models with constant time-headway gap strategy and constant spacing gap strategy were, respectively, established based on the third-order linear vehicle dynamics model. Then, a linear-quadratic optimal controller was designed considering the perspectives of driving safety, efficiency, and ride comfort with three performance indicators including vehicle gap error, relative speed, and desired acceleration. An improved particle swarm optimization algorithm was used to optimize the weighting coefficients for the controller state and control variables. Based on the Matlab/Simulink experimental simulation, the analysis results show that the proposed strategy can significantly reduce the gap error and relative speed and improve the flexibility and initiative of the platoon control strategy compared with the unoptimized strategies. Sensitivity analysis was provided for communication lag and actuator lag in order to prove the applicability and effectiveness of this proposed strategy, which will achieve better distribution of system performance. This paper proposes a simulation approach for the optimal driving range of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) by modeling the driving and charging behavior. The driving and charging patterns of BEV users are characterized by reconstructing the daily travel chain based on the practical data collected from Shanghai, China. Meanwhile, interdependent behavioral variables for daily trips and each trip are defined in the daily trip chain. To meet the goal of the fitness of driving range, a stochastic simulation framework is established by the Monte Carlo method. Finally, with consideration of user heterogeneity, the optimal driving range under different charging scenarios is analyzed. The findings include the following. (1) The daily trip chain can be reconstructed through the behavioral variables for daily trips and each trip, and there is a correlation between the variables examined by the copula function. (2) Users with different daily travel demand have a different optimal driving range. When choosing a BEV, users are recommended to consider that the daily vehicle kilometers traveled are less than 34% of the battery driving range. (3) Increasing the charging opportunity and charging power is more beneficial to drivers who are characterized by high daily travel demand. The modeling of car-following behavior is an attractive research topic in traffic simulation and intelligent transportation. The driver plays an important role in car following but is ignored by most car-following models. This paper presents a novel car-following driver model, which can retain aspects of human driving styles. First, simulated car-following data are generated by using the speed control driver model and the real-world driving behavior data if the real-world car-following data are not available. Then, the car-following driver model is established by imitating human driving maneuver during real-world car following. This is accomplished by using a neural network-based learning control paradigm and car-following data. Finally, the FTP-72 driving cycle is borrowed as the speed profile of the leading vehicle for the model test. The driving style is quantitatively analyzed by AESD. The results show that the proposed car-following driver model is capable of retaining the naturalistic driving styles while well accomplishing the car-following task with the error of relative distance mostly less than 5 meters for every driving styles. Microscopic traffic simulation is an ideal tool for investigating the network level impacts of eco-driving in different networks and traffic conditions, under varying penetration rates and driver compliance rates. The reliability of the traffic simulation results however rely on the accurate representation of the simulation of the driver support system and the response of the driver to the eco-driving advice, as well as on a realistic modelling and calibration of the driver's behaviour. The state-of-the-art microscopic traffic simulation models however exclude detailed modelling of the driver response to eco-driver support systems. This paper fills in this research gap by presenting a framework for extending state-of-the-art traffic simulation models with sub models for drivers' compliance to advice from an advisory eco-driving support systems. The developed simulation framework includes among others a model of driver's compliance with the advice given by the system, a gear shifting model and a simplified model for estimating vehicles maximum possible acceleration. Data from field operational tests with a full advisory eco-driving system developed within the ecoDriver project was used to calibrate the developed compliance models. Automated vehicles used as public transport show a great promise of revolutionizing current transportation systems. Still, there are many questions as to how these systems should be organized and operated in cities to bring the best out of future services. In this study, an agent-based model (ABM) is developed to simulate the on-demand operations of shared automated vehicles (SAVs) in a parallel transit service (PTS) and a tailored time-varying transit service (TVTS). The proposed TVTS system can switch service schemes between a door-to-door service (DDS) and a station-to-station service (SSS) according to what is best for the service providers and the travelers. In addition, the proposed PTS system that allows DDS and SSS to operate simultaneously is simulated. To test the conceptual design of the proposed SAV system, simulation experiments are performed in a hypothetical urban area to show the potential of different SAV schemes. Simulation results suggest that SAV systems together with dynamic ridesharing can significantly reduce average waiting time, the vehicle kilometres travelled and empty SAV trips. Moreover, the proposed optimal vehicle assignment algorithm can significantly reduce the empty vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT) for the pickups for all tested SAV systems up to about 40% and improve the system capacity for transporting the passengers. Comparing the TVTS system, which has inconvenient access in peak hours, with the PTS systems, which always makes available door-to-door transport, we conclude that the latter could achieve a similar system performance as the former in terms of average waiting time, service time and system capacity. Traffic oscillations often occur in road traffic, they make traffic flow unstable, unsafe and inefficient. Emerging connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technologies are potential solutions to mitigating the traffic oscillations for the advantages that CAVs are controllable and cooperative. In order to study a control strategy and the effectiveness of CAVs in mitigating traffic oscillations and improving traffic flow and analyse the characteristics of homogeneous traffic flow made up of CAVs and heterogeneous traffic flow made up of CAVs and RVs when traffic oscillations appear in traffic flow. Firstly, the formation and propagation of traffic oscillations in a platoon of RVs are simulated and analysed. Then, a car-following control model is built to control the longitudinal motion of CAVs, and real-time information of preceding CAV is used in the model and this can make the motion of CAVs more cooperative. The model reflects an idea named "slow-in" and "fast-out," and this idea is helpful to mitigate traffic oscillations. Then, numerical simulations of homogeneous traffic flow of a platoon of CAVs and simulations of heterogeneous traffic flow containing CAVs and RVs are conducted, and different penetration rates (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1) of CAVs are considered in the simulations of heterogeneous traffic flow. The characteristics and evolution of traffic flow are analysed and some indexes reflecting traffic efficiency and stability are calculated and analysed. Simulation results show that there are smaller velocity fluctuation, less stopping time and shorter length of road occupied when vehicle platoon contains CAVs (penetration rates are from 0.2 to 1) compared to the platoon containing only RVs (without CAVs). As for the heterogeneous traffic flow containing CAVs and RVs, these three indexes decrease with the increase of penetration rates (from 0.2 to 1) of CAVs. These results indicate that CAVs with the car-following control model in vehicle platoon are beneficial for mitigating traffic oscillations and improving traffic flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study provides a literature review of the simulation-based connected and automated intelligent-vehicle studies. Media and car-manufacturing companies predict that connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) would be available in the near future. However, society and transportation systems might not be completely ready for their implementation in various aspects, e.g., public acceptance, technology, infrastructure, and/or policy. Since the empirical field data for CAVs are not available at present, many researchers develop micro or macro simulation models to evaluate the CAV impacts. This study classifies the most commonly used intelligent-vehicle types into four categories (i.e., adaptive cruise control, ACC; cooperative adaptive cruise control, CACC; automated vehicle, AV; CAV) and summarizes the intelligent-vehicle car-following models (i.e., Intelligent Driver Model, IDM; MICroscopic Model for Simulation of Intelligent Cruise Control, MIXIC). The review results offer new insights for future intelligent-vehicle analyses: (i) the increase in the market-penetration rate of intelligent vehicles has a significant impact on traffic flow conditions; (ii) without vehicle connections, such as the ACC vehicles, the roadway-capacity increase would be marginal; (iii) none of the parameters in the AV or CAV models is calibrated by the actual field data; (iv) both longitudinal and lateral movements of intelligent vehicles can reduce energy consumption and environmental costs compared to human-driven vehicles; (v) research gap exists in studying the car-following models for newly developed intelligent vehicles; and (vi) the estimated impacts are not converted into a unified metric (i.e., welfare economic impact on users or society) which is essential to evaluate intelligent vehicles from an overall societal perspective. Most previous prediction based Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control strategies focused on improving traffic mobility based on the macroscopic traffic data. Nowadays, the emerging technologies provide access to the microscopic traffic flow data, which better captures the details of traffic flow dynamics in the VSL controlled environment. Thus, in this paper, the microscopic traffic flow data were utilized as a supplement to predict the evolutions of traffic flow parameters. The proposed VSL control algorithm adopts the Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework, which employs a modified version of the classic traffic flow model METANET to take advantage of the microscopic data in traffic flow predictions. The microscopic traffic simulation software VISSIM was used to establish an experimental simulation platform and perform real time traffic responsive control based on field data. The proposed control strategy was evaluated against the no-VSL control and macroscopic-based VSL controlled scenario.
